I think rap only has one name. The reason its hated is because:

There is only 1 Tupac. And there are a million posers. Therefore since the white man can't rap. I assume the over-convulsive population of Bieberhead emos, will forever raise the hate of rap.

Then again I think DMX is another one of the rappers that lives on to the true rap as an ideological fight.

I think there is a big difference in Rap and Beatmaking though. For me: Jayz, Timbaland and Busta Rhymes are more beatmakers, than rappers.

Wu Tang Clan is good but their songs don't have a message to me. And their more hip hop than rap if I'm correct. Old school anyways, but good in their style.

Eminem is in eternal recovery. So he doesn't count. xD

50 cent is a cash mashine. But he is cool I have to admit. Respekt for his style, especially since he's the most skilled playa' out of them all! :D

Lil Wayne;;; skill as producer;; but not a rapper I would call. Maybe I'm wrong. He is a commercial genius.

Snoop Dawg, I don't like this dude, period.

In a nutshell: Tupac> The Rest

just looking at some of your post....

jay-z a beatmaker? noooooo
lil wayne a producer.... nooooooo way

totally agree about snoop though, he is trash

lol at rap being hated, you serious?

Eminem has two diamond selling albums and has sold like 100 million units. Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem and Kanye West and some of the biggest names in music.

This post validates nothing. I can name mainstream bands that everyone has heard of (at least in name) and say the exact same thing as this.

Everything is hated by some people lol.

There you go.

A majority seem to not like it anymore. Not sure if it's because they hate it or just lost interest to listen to something else but when it's actually hard to find a radio station that is primarily rap (and kinda like a mainstream station because if you hunt for it you'll find it) and instead, now all we get is that pop stuff. And Lil' Wayne lol. Point is that rap is losing ground. It was losing ground a few years ago to indie rock, then gained popularity again, and now it's losing to pop or as I like to call it "tween wave".

I used to be a hater. But, it just depends. You have to give all music a chance. I don't know if I'll ever be able to accept Country music though, it's just plain not my style. I used to think rap was all garbage until I really listened to some of Eminem, Kanye West, and others that I realized it's not all bad. I also really like Afroman, because he's so funny.

I don't mind what genre of music a song is in, so long as it's good and my ears like it.

Unfortunately, not everyone has that mentality. The bottom-line is that people generally stereotype rap music as being the chosen music genre of a stereotype that they dislike and therefore don't want to associate themselves with anything they would. People dislike the music not because of the music, but because of the people they think listen to the music.

The reason I don't like rap is because most of what I hear is complete garbage. How many rap "songs" are there that deal with killing, drugs, or sex? And from a musician's stand point, it isn't music. Using just Sony Acid it would take me, maybe, an hour to create a rap beat. Hardly any talent goes into the "music" and as I stated before, can't remember if it was here or elsewhere, but anyone can sit their ass down and write something up. It may take some a while longer compared to others (I suck at writing lyrics but when I start, it's hard to stop because I can keep going). The only talent I will give props to that is in this genre is freestyle. That's something that takes practice and when someone's freestyling about things other than violence, sex, and drugs, then usually it shows off their intelligence. But other than that, it's nothing but computer and to me, it's something that anyone can do.

It's not something that you can learn new things with as life goes on such as guitar or martial arts where you're constantly learning and trying to get better. With this, you will always be doing the same thing; either writing lyrics or using the computer to make beats.

A lot of it is indeed trash, but some of it isn't. I'm hardly a rap connoisseur myself, but I'll dabble with some of it, and some of it is indeed good.

And as I said, personally, I don't care how the music was made or if the musician is talented or not - if it sounds good, it sounds good and I'll listen to it. I don't care if it's over-produced, dreadful live or even ocassionally poor lyrics, if my ears like it they're not going to lie to me.

Actual talent and well-written songs and the like is, of course, nice and usually provides better music, but it doesn't mean when not that it's utterly unlistenable.

How many times must I say I never listen to the radio? Hell, you know I listen to metal and that shit RARELY gets played on the radio. When I listen to rap, it's almost always in someone else's car. Depending who I'm riding with it's either that crap on the radio or underground shit from their iPod. Immortal Technique is obviously smart and knows what he's talking about when it's not dealing with sex or violence, but even his shit gets old.

I'm still flabbergasted as to how you haven't picked up on me never listening to the radio when I listen to metal. Unless you think shitty Greenday is metal or Linkin Park then I understand, even if it's unforgivable.

Rap music is hated because there is an abundance of a certain kind of Rap that gets air played frequently.

People are eager to judge the entirety of 'Rap' music based on the material that enters their ears/home/car via the TV/Radio, not always considering the fact that other types of Rap/Artists have not reached the Mainstream, or may have, but received minimal air play compared to that of a "Platinum Rapper"

If I recall correctly, KRS One claimed during a time of War, he had tracks promoting Peace/Unity/Anti-War and apparently they were avoided because it did not fit the 'agenda' of the Radio Station/Music Industry during that time of War..such actions have an effect on how Rap is perceived by the Mass

Since 9/11 just passed I'd like to use it as a comparison, although we may have been taught that all Middle Eastern's are Terrorists, this is not the case and as is with Rap! Both consists of more than the common stereotypes...

I hope this sheds some light on the question..

People who diss Rap/hip-hop are usually the people who listen to 'date' Radio friendly music. I listen to Rap/Hip as much as i listen to any other genre.

I have no time for radio rap or 'house rap'. But im a huge fan of Industrial Hip Hop, Trip Hop, Glitch Hop and any other progressive/abstract Hip hop. In terms of rap, i dont take the lyrics to seriously, but i do enjoy the wordplay and rhythm.

Some great great hip/rap albums are Wu Tang Clan-36 Chambers, Techno Animal-Brotherhood of the bomb, Dalek-Absence, Earl Sweatshirt-Doris, Death Grips-The Money Store, GZA - Liquid Swords and a lot more. Being a ex-metal head, i found a lot of the music i was segregated to was getting very generic and boring, so i expanded my music intrets, and found there was so much good music out there, i ended up feeling like an idiot for not exploring earlier.

Rather than judging a whole genre, just take each artist and album as it is. Over talking about Genres are for elitist morons, who spend more time arguing about sub sub sub sub genres on youtube.

So in conclusion They're as many good and bad artists in rap/hip hop as they're in Rock/metal/electronic/Acoustic. But Rap/hip is usually lead by the radio stars. But if you actually go underground you can find some prolific and god-tier artists that are f the rap/hip genre.

P.S While i was waiting to take my grade 7 Classical guitar grade, i was listening to Aphex Twin on my ipod :-p

I would rather drive an electric screwdriver through my ear canals than listen to rap. Just sayin'

srs bsns: It's really simple. People hate rap because they hate it on the surface. It's just like "judging a book on its cover." The "cover" in this case is the scene most commonly associated with the rap genre: that annoying, repetitive, talentless, brain-cell-killing dumpster sludge that is played on the radio or other mainstream media format.

I never liked 'rap' because that kind of music isnt really my style, but mainly because of what OP pointed out - the objectifying of women in videos, CONSTANT swearing, and several other unnecessary profanities that can influence negative behavior. I guess I'll be dubbed some "crazy theorist" for saying this, but there are also a number of popular artists (i.e Eminem, Lady Gaga, etc) that know full well what kind of the messages they're pumping out, and do so because they're working for a certain agenda.

I know that Rock/Heavy metal and other genres of music is no exception to this though, and the ones that have the same traits I steer clear of.

In any case, there is one rap artist that I've become a huge fan of - Zach Hemsey. He rarely swears to get his message across and the lyrics are meaningful in more ways than one. :)

Rap just isn't my thing, but I don't HATE it. I appreciate it as an art form, and I definitely think it takes talent to be good at it, just like any other art form.

That being said, I live for Missy Elliott. I've always found her production to be fresh and timeless - you can put on any of her songs from whenever and it sounds like it could have just been recorded and released on iTunes 10 minutes ago. She's always had a sense of fun to her music, her flow is amazing, and her music videos are always creative. She's also a great writer and producer for other artists too.

Hmm, I don't like rap, but I don't generally _hate_ it, because I think rapping is more difficult than it seems to be, especially making the lyrics at least. One have to think about rhythm and rhyming and syllables and all that. I think rap should have some meaning, there is a lot of "no-brainer" rap from where I am from - and that kinda rap I hate, truly.

One thing I've always found funny is how rappers, rockers and other types of artists seem to get along just fine, yet it's their fans that don't mix. Putting them together is like mixing oil and water.

Run DMC and Aerosmith got along. Ice-T and Slayer got along. Public Enemy and Anthrax got along. Mick Jagger has also stated that Jay-Z and Vybz Kartel were two of his favorite rappers.
