I am impressed by some of the truly, truly obscure tracks you’ve put up. One of the few albums I’m still hunting for is the soundtrack to Trekkies. If you have, that would be great. If not, that’s okay too.

On a side, non-Trek note, On the old film hunt thread you mentioned having a Star Wars SFX album that included droid SFX. I wouldn’t ask you to muddy this thread by posting it here, but if there is some way I could get a copy, that would be great. (It’s for a project I’m working on.)

On the NextGen music page, is everything listed below the "This is not commercially available" actually not available? Many of the cue names that follow seem to be from the retail releases, the notable exceptions being the entire "Face of the Enemy" and "Inner Light" variations.

Btw would it be acceptable to provide downloads for TOS scores derived from the dvd’s 5.1 audio (music/FX)?

bitrates in audiobooks are different from music, they sometimes are shared in very LOW bitrates, reaching from @20 to @96, everything above is quite high. The links are re-ups from what I found in the net, upgrades welcome but I do not have them any differently.

Wow! That’s pretty amazing. The clips you uploaded are soooo tantalizing. It’s great to hear them without ambient sound effects (such as the DVD rips I did) – and yet they’re just a bit too far gone to place into my DVD ripped tracks for a cleaner copy. Still its wonderful to hear them. In particular the cue where Apollo and the Enterprise are duking it out at the end of "Who Mourns for Adonais?" – I was hearing music that was (up until this point) totally smothered in sound effcts. Wish there were more out there. Makes an official release all that more tantalizing! Thanks for filling in the details, and for sharing those clips William. 🙂

wow. I dont get people like that – wanting to keep something all to their selves. Does Paramount have any music-only tapes in its vaults?
Spielberg wanted a clip from a great film called "Lonely are the brave" and assumed it was on dvd. Fans of the film had been wishing it was released for years. Anyway, when he found out it wasn’t available, he requested it to be released, and it was. We need someone with major industry clout like him to say, "Hey, where’s all the TREK TOS music?" It doesnt seem to matter what we small fry want.

I may be overly optimistic, but with the recent success of Star Trek 2009, and the releases of complete soundtracks like ST II, III (and now) V, not to mention the recent Ron Jones release – well I remain hopeful that an eventual TOS box set release could one day happen.

I also have the music from the Roddenberry record "Inside Star Trek", that was recorded by a small LA based new age band, that was used in the background, while Gene would talk. I also have the complete "Inside Star Trek", along with many RARE recordings!

I agree Momaru. That’s why it’s so tantalizing. The heaviest laden cues on WMfA? consist of the final confrontation (filled with wind, lighting and phaser fire), and then topped off with Apollo’s final (echoey) speech. They’re there on William’s studio recording link, but severly muffled, and lacking crispness. I’ve tried filtering the clips a bit in order to replace my DVD ripped ones, but haven’t had too much success. I’m not giving up yet, though! 😀

BTW, the first cue to Elaan of Troyius on William’s file contains an extra 15 seconds of music dialed down in the final episode edit. That one I was able to clean up a bit and add back into my DVD ripped version. Not perfect, but it works. That was a pretty cool discovery! 🙂

reread William’s post – Neil sounds pretty selfish and hoarding to me:
…I asked him about getting copies of the 2 tracks masters from those 13 episodes. A 2 track has music on one channel, and voice and sound effects on the other. He told me that he had no interest in releasing the music from those 13 episodes, and has placed the master recordings in a bank deposit box, and has no plans to get them out, so NO, I cannot have a copy of those tapes.

When Neil gave me that cassette, he has no interest in the TOS music, and a small interest in the SFX. That really changed when he played a small sample of FX at a convention, and saw how many people approached him with requests for records and cassettes (No CDs invented at that time!) When I didn’t get the cassette back to him within a week, he started harassing me on the phone, so I had to drive all the way up to LA to give him the blasted thing back!

As to "WHO" I am: if I told you, it would scare you too much! (Hehehehehe)

As to the poor quality of these episodes, sorry, but that is the best that was available at that time, and I suppose that in the very near future, within a couple
of years, the advent of new computer programs, to take the exsisting music, and run it thru some filters and programs to take it back to first generation will be available to the mass public, then we can take this music and clean it up. Some of that is available right now, as well as "Spacial environment" programs to make the mono music sound stereo. Just a really good reverb, in my opinion, but still sounds better than mono!

Anyway, with more and more rare TOS stuff hitting the net, it will only be a matter of time before someone at Paramount sits up and decides that they HAVE to get that music out there, and get a "piece of the action" (sorry, couldn’t help dropping that episode title in here!)

As far as I know, there are no 2 track recordings left at the studio. Most were just thrown away, if you can believe that! A fan found some old reel to reels, and sold them to a friend of mine, who came out with the "Star Trek Bloopers" record. These were the vocal tracks from the LAST TOS episode, and if anyone has a copy of that recording, since mine has been long gone for many years, I would appreciate a link!

Fascinating stuff, William. And please don’t feel like I’m putting down the quality of the file you uploaded. Considering these are recordings from reel to reel from the late 70’s – well, I’m amazed they sound as good as they do.

I’ve always assumed that Paramount/Viacom still has all of the soundtrack mixes (even of the episodes without original composed material). I can’t imagine that they could build 5.1 audio DVDs without separate dialogue, sound effects, and music. But I’m in the same frame of mind as you are – I think/hope its only a matter of time before these recordings receive some love and care and an eventual official release.

Please consider sharing any other rare TOS recordings that you find popping up on the Internet. Thanks for all you’ve shared so far. 🙂

I suspect Paramount used stems for the TOS 5.1 dvds since most of the episodes dont have completely separate dialog and FX channels. If so, it’s unlikely a retail release would come from those sources. A notable exception to the rule was the FSM release of "Satan Bug" (Goldsmith) with it’s FX – they felt it was better than nothing, and Goldsmith is so popular.
It would be a dream come true if Paramount still had the separate elements. Maybe William can pull some strings…

Hey, the artist is in an area where everyone can rip his work off. How would you feel if you couldn’t lock your car up, and every day people who say they appreciate you steal the contents. Not FUN! The same technologies that make the digital age such jolly good fun has a dark side in that artists are easily robbed of their work. It seems like everyday or so some fan sends an e-mail asking for some cue that has not been released on CD legally. The studios paid good bucks to record the music so it could add to the enjoyment of the audience which in the case of Television soundtracks paid nothing. The public is completely spoiled. You can buy a feature film on DVD like Star Wars that cost 100 million to make for under $20 dollars. My God that’s a freaking bargain Jimmy! But no, we all want more. We are totally sick as a society, especially in the ways we abuse our few creative people. Without the creative ones, mankind would go nowhere. Just take a look at history. So everyone hold hands and decide if you want to fuck humanity as well as the content creators? Seems like this would be an easy thing to figure out, but apparently some brain chips were eaten by the dog along with the homework assignment. How sad. I am thinking of putting my scores in cement so they are more difficult to steal. Somebody’s gonna get a hernia. Honor creativity and you honor yourself. Don’t get me started on SUV’s.

and speaking of sweethearts, Jerry Goldsmith was the NICEST guy you would ever meet!
He really put me in mind of Issac Asimov, he would talk with anyone, on any level, and he was a very down to Earth, REAL person, and that’s very rare to find
in Hollywood. I loved talking with Jerry (and Issac as well) and I really learned alot from him. He remembered me from when I was a "child prodigy" and played the classics all over the world, and that really impressed him big time. I told him that it was really all crap, that I would have rather been playing baseball with the other kids, or going to summer camp! He thought that was great.

Jerry was one of those very rare persons, who could sit down at a piano and create a wonderfull piece of music at the drop of a hat! He personally gave me the extended music from STTMP, before it was ever released on CD! Now, all of that is available here or there, but it was amazing to visit his house in Bel Aire and see his wall of reel boxes, with almost every recording session he ever did! WOW, what a treat!

I agree, a great shame. Even though Courage created the Trek theme and scored the two pilots, it was really Steiner who carried the bulk of the composing for many great Trek scores. And Steiner was consistently firing on all musical cylinders. I haven’t met a Steiner Trek score that I didn’t love. Can’t say the same about Courage or Dunning (as good as they were too). Its a real shame GNP never got around to releasing any of his scores.

Um, actually I was born in 1969. I couldn’t think of another reason for that number to be in your screen name/handle/moniker.

As far as I can tell, Courage only scored two more episodes (besides the pilots) – Man Trap and Plato’s Stepchildren. I had the impression Roddenberry created a rift between himself and Courage (over money and/or authorship) which is possibly why he didn’t score more episodes.

So have we figured out who William really is? If it’s not Harlan Ellison, then I guess it’s Q.

Let’s hope technology will come around to rip those damned DVD’s without those SFX and dialogue echo’s (as was hinted at from someone), or that, some day, they will get an official release!

To William Taylor: I have read all your recent messages regarding TOS music, and also your latest comments re. Neil Norman, Ron Jones and the majestro himself, Jerry Goldsmith (RIP), and I can only say: WOW. You really are in the business, and I envy you for your experiences. I also can understand your frustration with some of those people who have "stabbed you in the back"!

I will go on reading your posts, William and Veri, and will give some input and thoughts, whenever I feel the need. As Veri knows (I met him on demonoid and had many emails with him!) I’m also a great fan of all the TOS music. (I’m born in 1961, and being German, I came into contact with Trek in 1972, and since then I immediately became an avid follower of Trek TOS and, to some lesser degree, all its later incarnations.)

One thing I wanted to ask you, William: Since the "New Voyages/Phase II" team apparently uses your Trek TOS sound effects (as I read in your above post), what is the source of the original trek tos cues they are using for the episodes? Have they ripped the DVD’s themselves? Are all of their cues SFX-free cues only, or have they access to other cues, which Veri, for instance, couldn’t clean? I haven’t checked the Phase II episodes to cross examine them with Veri’s cues, to see if there are clean cues which Veri doesn’t have. What do you, William, and you, Veri, think about that?

Dennis Murren is the SPFX man who did all the stop-motion work for Star Wars, Empire, etc. The only reason this kid thought that I was Dennis Murren was that I had a beard at that time, and I sort of looked like him.

It was here. Someone from Film Score Monthly popped in here and saw it, reported it to the producer of the FSM soundtracks (can’t remember his name) and he was FURIOUS, threatening to basically stop producing any more soundtracks since TRJP hadn’t (yet) generated a return. Sarah immediately closed the thread on which it was loaded, deleted the download and, perhaps, all the FSM downloads on these pages. The possiblity was even raised that the whole project, here, would be shut down.

So it’s a sore spot.

I recommend everyone buy the Ron Jones Project when he can find the $150 or so it costs, as well as the complete releases of Star Treks II and III. FSM does a great job, I would recommend supporting them highly!

When I was trying to make a complete TRON soundtrack (using Audio Extractor, I believe) I had some trouble with one scene on the solar sailer, just after Flynn is rescued. For 99% of the soundtrack, the voices and SF/X were on a different channel than the music, so all went smoothly, except for this one scene. In it, these two recognizers attach the beam me and ride it along, from the left part of the screen to the right. For some reason, the recognizer sound seemed to be on all tracks, so I couldn’t get rid of it.

Then, somehow, I realized that, since it’s in stereo, and the recognizer is moving from left to right, so is the SF/X! So I went and copied the music that was on the left channel when the SF/X was on the right, and simply pasted the music onto where the SF/X were! (Ain’t Audacity great?) I did the same thing with the other side, so now, there is no SF/X anymore!

It’s always great when I can figure out how to do stuff!

I know not what "patois" means, but as someone else suggested, I think Jay Chattaway is the closest guess yet. He seems about the right age, and I’ve seen a photo of him with a mustache!

Hard to argue with your summation there burnedout. To be certain, Courage did have an impact. And as you say, they were still playing his 1st season cues in the 3rd season (albeit re-records).

I think Steiner just plays a bit better towards my taste in Trek music. Courage had some great scores too (The Cage, Where No Man…, The Naked Time, The Entreprise Incident), but some of his scores left me less enthused (such as Man Trap and Plato’s Stepchildren). I honestly can’t say the same about Steiner (or for that matter Kaplan, Fried, or Fielding). Every score is a gem IMHO.

Still, this is like trying to decide which child I love more. Impossible. I love them all! 😀

soundtrekker! Great to "see" you again! Hope all is well with you. The project has continued in spurts. Season 3 has been more laborious. Lost of season 1 rerecords to sort through, plus strange cues popping up once in a while. Plus, I have to trudge through the hippie sing alongs. 😉 Some improvements here and there to be sure, but only a full official release will really satisfy. 😀

I still thhink they’re using clean cues, not just the official CDs (original or rerecordings). But, I haven’t really had time to examine it further either. The one clip that has me scratching my head comes from the space battle in Blood and Fire pt. 1. I am hearing clean music from Enterprise Incident and Spocks Brain. Either these are very, very close rerecords (and which label even released those?)- or they have access to the original tapes.

I agree with you, Momaru – except some of the music they use seems like original cues from Season 3 soundtracks not yet released (or re-recorded). Watch "Blood and Fire" part 1 (Star Trek: Phase II | Video Portal (http://digitalnewage.com/dnapartners/stp2/default.asp?epi=BaF-PT1)) and have a listen. There’s clean stuff from Elaan of Troyius, Spocks Brain, etc. Maybe I’m hearing more in this episode than is truly there and being swayed by my own wishful thnking. I’d love to hear others’ opinions on this too.

Ever come across any recordings of Star Trek (The Animated Series) by Filmation? Composer Ray Ellis (who is credited for Filmation scores under pseudonym of wife’s name Yvette Blaise) said in an interview that he did not have the tapes himself. The DVD is 5.1 (the only one of Filmation’s DVDs with 5.1 that I can see). There are tracks of music w/ sound effects without dialogue.

I did find a rip someone apparently did from the DVD of the main themes used and reused on the show, adding up to about 10 minutes. They did a good job- got some stereo spatial effect you mentioned somehow that is not on the DVD channels. I’ve extracted the two (apparently mono) L + R channels which contain both the music and sound effects, but no dialogue, so whoever put this together picked the best spots they could find to avoid SFX, and added a stereo spatial effect. Would be so great to have the music without the effects, of course.

There are also some SFX tracks from the animated series included in a collection from ST related shows.

Awhile ago, I read on some TREK site that PHASE II was getting a couple TOS cues from someone at Paramount. Perhaps someone should email PHASE II.
It’s reassuring to think some of the music exists in the Vaults, but there doesnt seem to be any plans to release it.

I was hoping to tweak a mod I have for Star Trek Legacy and since the stuff you uploaded was crystal clear (unlike some of the muffled "rip from the movie" audio used in the mod) and if you had the effect it would have been great. Ah well, couldn’t hurt to ask.

Yeah, I just got my hands on the TOS music, what there is of it, and I’m currently going thru it. It was NOT located at Paramount however, and Ralph is a well known liar about MANY things!

You are very welcome, thanks for the kind words. As a child ST TAS was one of the cornerstones of my growing awareness of film and TV background scores as an art form that moved me. Ellis’ music was memorable in melody and rhythm, and big in dramatic scope for a "cartoon".

I looked thru my Phase II forum PMs and emails from last year, and found this reply about the music (I never got a response from Miller, this was an email from a forum member):

The name of the guy is Ralph Miller, from what I understand (he’s discussed this in a thread about "Blood and Fire") he has the original tracks. I’m afraid you really can’t beat that as far as source material goes, huh!

I’m not sure if I was supposed to keep his sharing of that cue he sent me on the down low, but as it’s only 15 seconds long I don’t think any harm should come of it.

I also dunno how he’d feel about sharing more of it. I would dearly love for all of the TOS music to be available some day, seeing as Paramount don’t look likely to ever sell more TOS soundtracks. I’ve bought every official recording (and all but one of the re-recordings) and would happily buy more, if only they’d sell it!

Anyway, Ralph Miller is his name and he was very polite and helpful. If anything comes from your discussions with him, let us know!

if you notice, there’s five 30 second cues followed by a 5 minute cue. That suggested to me that the long cue was a suite, and for some reason, someone split it up. If you check them out, you’ll see this is true, with one exception: cue #1 is presented in a different version and later in the suite. Maybe this 2nd rendition was for a similar scene at the end of the show.

#5 at 4.46

That doesn’t convert .ac3 to anything.

Hi Sorei, I usually stay away from payware (which that looks to be). My real question is if anyone has downloaded and unpacked them successfully. Btw, the mp3 versions of 2 cds apparently were yours or someone using the same screenname (from a closed site).

That’s also where I got wvunpack.exe (part of WAVPack download) which doesnt output a working wave when I drop an WV on it. I dont know how else to use that folder of exe’s.

Have you tried a program that can convert wv files to flac or ape. Since they are all lossless you wouldn’t loss anything during convertion, i guess.

I checked the first volume. Sometimes dragging a file onto .exe doesn’t work. I thought this may be the problem but I extracted .wav tracks from .wv without any problem using wvunpack.exe.

You would be correct. I don’t have the book in front of me, but in Scott Bond’s Music of Star Trek, he goes over exactly how that happened. In short, Rick Berman wanted the sound of the ships engines audible, which meant the music had to be muted. He also abhorred recurring themes. Dennis McCarthy was willing to comply, and Ron Jones wasn’t. Thus, Star Trek, known for it’s musical quality, took a distinct turn toward musical wallpaper for the next decade. He relaxed those restrictions over the years, but I think Star Trek’s musical identity was indelibly marked. Jay Chattaway’s single TNG album included a couple unused tracks from his first score that were deemed too energetic.

Yes, Unfortunately. They are ripped from 5.1 audio dvd. The dialogue is removed, but the effects are mixed with the music, so the battle scenes are pretty much s*****d, but there are some nice clean tracks.

Is Generation with SFX or without.

Well the vocal song of Ilia’s theme from TMP is the most odd thing i’ve heard in a while 😀

The Shaun Cassidy single was released in the U.S. as a promo only. It was only distributed commercially in Japan. Sadly I have been unable (so far) to locate the B-side.

Here’s another version — this is Bob James’ Theme from ST:TMP (probably my favorite cover version of a Trek theme) edited together (fan edit) with the Shaun Cassidy song. The sound quality is much better here but you only get a truncated version of A Star Beyond Time.

It’s because i was so used to hear the original, that when i heard the vocal cover was kind of strange. It’s not his voice, i think he has a fine voice, but the melody just don’t work with a vocal in my opinion.

Now maybe i’m totally wrong, but wasn’t the original TOS TV theme, supposed to be song with lyrics and such??

Yes, Roddenberry wrote lyrics for it so he could get 50% of the profits (I think that is actually covered in a conversation earlier in this or the other Trek thread). Nichelle Nichols recorded a version of the Theme with lyrics but these were different from the original Roddenberry lyrics. I know of only two or three artists who recorded the Roddenberry lyrics version. Jazz singer Judy Roberts did for her album You Are There back in the 70s (btw I am looking for a copy of this if anyone has it). I have a lounge album by a group called Project: Pimento that not only recorded the Theme with Gene’s lyrics but they toss in a theremin as well! It’s pretty neat. I’ll post it here soon.

I just bought this 45 single and I’ll be ripping it and sharing it soon hopefully. People always say Shatner and Nimoy are both horrible singers — this recording proves Grace Lee Whitney is on equal footing with them. It is absolutely howlingly bad! I cannot help but think of that scene in Boogie Nights in the recording studio when I listen to this track! Both hilarious and really sad. Here’s a sample:

Yes, sorry, but I had been VERY busy, and with the holiday season, Whew! I just finished a production, and will be starting another in a couple of weeks, so, understandably, my time is not my own. I did find a small group of sounds, and will be adding them ASAP. I wanted to hold off to get them altogether, but I will have to just post what I have, and list the rest at a later date. The new production will keep me busy for about 5 or 6 weeks, so we shall see!

It’s the episode where Worf is reunited with K’Ehleyr and realizes he has a son, Alexander. There was a melody that played at the very end of the episode that was so beautiful and moving that even though I’ve never been able to find the soundtrack, I can still remember the tune in my head. Even so, I’d just love to have that track if anyone has it or knows where I can get it. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Ah! I see now! Stardrive is featured prominently in the last track ("The Star Trek Dream") of Inside Star Trek and apparently Columbia’s session orchestra recorded the Star Trek Theme for the album. That Theme recording was even released as a 7" single attributed to The Inside Star Trek Orchestra:

Version 3.0 indeed! This third time around I went through all the other episodes in the season in an attempt to clean up effects or dialogue laden cues. While I wasn’t able to remove all the inherent problems with a DVD rip, there were some nice improvements to Season 1. I found some extended cues that were dialed out of the original episode, plus some alternate takes on some of the first season cues. Season 2 remains largely unchanged (since I had already troweled all the season 2 eps for version 2.0). Season 3 has some modest improvements, along with some extended cues, plus additional re-recorded cues from seasons 1 and 2.

I also took on board Williamtaylor1969’s two studio recording snippets from Who Mourns for Adonais? and Elaan of Troyius, and added them as bonus tracks. The first cue for Elaan was dialed out early, so I was able to restore that cue to its full length (although there is a noticable drop in quality- but I decided it was better than nothing). Even with the lower quality of the studio recordings, you can hear some great stuff in there that was sadly covered up in my ripped cues by sound effects (in particular "Clast of the Titans" for Who Mourns for Adonais?).

And HR Pufnstuf – yes I am. Glad to see some demonoid folks over here too. 🙂

Very nice! I hope one of the ‘modest improvements’ to Season Three is, of course, the Space Hippie songs from Way To Eden! I’ve mentioned this before on the older Trek thread but just wanna mention it again! I rewatched the Remastered episode last week with an intent of listening for potential recording problems. On the whole they sound pretty good. There was the song where we switch to the bridge at one point and it is given an intercom effect but overall the songs were pretty complete.

You won’t be disappointed. 😉 I left the intercom section of the song in, as I didn’t want to alter the cue. You’re also getting "Bitter Dregs" too. :p

Glad to hear that! "Bitter Dregs" is an actual song but it’s called "Maiden Wine". Nimoy re-recorded it for his album The Touch Of Leonard Nimoy (which I think I’ve shared on this thread a few pages back).

Version 1.0 was ripped in 2005, but I encoded @ a ridiculous 128kbps. Those went up on alt.binaries.sounds.soundtracks. Also, I only ripped from the original score episodes, not tracked ones as well – so I had more dialogue echo and sound effects than now.

By 2007 I realized I could improve on the sound quality. I started Version 2.0 from scratch and re-ripped the entire set of soundtracks and encoded @ 320kbps. This was the version that made it to Demonoid.

By 2009 I realized that I should trowel through all of the tracked episodes to try and improve the set one more time. Version 3.0 has more cleaned up tracks (i.e. less sound effects and dialogue echo), plus some extended cues and alternate cues as well as seasonal re-records (and, of course, the hippie songs from "The Way to Eden").

Moral of the story – I should have thought everything through more thoroughly back in 2005. :p

And, for the last week or so, Rapidshare pops up a window that says "Stop flooding our servers with download requests"!!!! I wish! I love Leonard Rosenman’s score. I was quite disappointed that they skipped it and went on to ST5…not that there’s anything wrong with Goldsmith, of course. 😀

Patterns of Force was tracked (apart from some military drums). I ripped the drum cues and have included them with the closest approximate score, By Any Other Name. You’ll find them there. 🙂

Sorry about the confusion olafolaf, it is the music that was ripped. Sfx do factor in to many of the tracks, but it is ambient noise really. There are a small number of cues that have voice echoes (couldn’t be helped – it was present in all 5 channels). These are mainly concentrated in a couple stories – mostly the Duning scores as fate would have it.

I cannot offer enough accolades to Zachary Quinto’s narration. He is simply the best audio book narrator in the history of Star Trek, and that is saying quite a great deal considering the formidable and venerable talents of George Takei and James Doohan. Yet, Quinto shows all his acting abilities in the audio adaptation and he has a thoughtful style as narrator. He performs Scotty and Chekov flawlessly (watch out Anton Yelchin!). As amazing a piece of work as this is, and it is truly amazing, I have questions about ‘complete.’ Aside from all the separate tracks that never got their own entries, (like Patterns of Force and the Omega Glory,) at least one episode got missed completely; A Piece of the Action. Now a brief clip of it is floating about, the trailer for the episode that was tagged onto the end of the music for another episode. I haven’t seen the episode in forever, so I wonder if there is anything else. (Unless of course, it was originally written for Mudd’s Women, and I’m just imagining things. But I don’t remember it there either.)
So, the little bits that have fallen through the cracks of your impressive cataloging make me paranoid as to what else might have been missed.

Also, should I be making a cover for The Squire of Gothos? If yes, are there any others I’ve missed?

Re: Website/Frankly Yes/Complete – Can’t speak to these, as they weren’t my thing. Don’t know if this is someone else’s rip, or someone posting the ones I did. And I agree – it’s pretty hard to asign "complete" to something like this. There’s always the problem of the seasonal "rerecords" for one thing. There were plenty of little 5-20 second snippets of rerecorded cues that I simply didn’t include because of the fragmented nature of them. So, I don’t know that we’ll ever reach "complete" – approach, certainly, but not reach.

Re: A Piece of the Action – I ripped each episode from each season, I think A Piece of the Action was all tracked. I could be wrong on this, but I don’t recall any new cues (lots of tracked sources from Tribbles, Catspaw, etc. as I seem to recall).

Re: Cover Art Feedback – They look fantastic. One or two small bits of feedback. Apparently it’s George Duning (not "Dunning"). I’ve made that mistake many times (and been corrected many more). Also, the small "mini" scores such as Space Seed, Miri, Patterns of Fore, Whom Gods Destroy, A Private Little War, Obsession, Gamesters of Triskellian, The Omega Glory, and Way to Eden – I can’t confirm for certain that these "mini" scores do indeed have their respective composers that they were linked to in my project. For instance, I put the Miri and Space Seed cues on with Conscience of the King because, to my untrained ear, they most sounded like Mullendore. I have no independent proof of that, just a gut instinct. They could be Steiner, Kaplan, or even some other freelance composer brought in to make a couple quick cues. Perhaps others on the board can shed some light on these "mini" scores.

Re: Cracks – Undboubtably there must be some. I’ve ripped every single episode, but I’m sure I haven’t nailed down every single piece (the most obvious ones being Uhura’s songs from Charlie X, the single cue from Squire of Gothos – though you could make the case that it is stock music there).

My personal take on all of these small details is just that – they’re small details. I wouldn’t sweat it too much, Jon C. I’m not sure we’ll ever be able to sort it all out completely. That might just be lazy thinking on my part, but 98% complete works pretty good for me. 😉

I’ll correct George Duning’s name. I think I made that mistake with the meta data once, caught it there, but not here. I think I’m confusing him with Yellow Submarine director George Dunning.

As for the other composers, I seem to remember that there’s a Trek music website that is pretty thorough about credits, but I don’t know if they cover EVERYTHING.

Uhura’s song is a gap, Squire of Gothos is more problematic, some people consider complete to be even library tracks (Most of The Prisoner is Library tracks, as well as Ren and Stimpy and SpongeBob.) I’m more concerned with what other covers people are likely to need.

If it’s the same tracklist PDF that you included in your covers upload, then – yes – that was mine. It must have been uploaded to another site by someone else.

GNP Volume III, Track 9 – That’s the trailer music from "Mudd’s Women". The "sexy lady" theme you hear in there is identical to the one used in "Mudd’s Women". It’s always perplexed me, because it’s on an Alexander Courage release, yet it uses the "sexy lady" theme that Steiner uses in "Mudd’s Women". That theme was tracked in to "A Piece of the Action" too (in fact it would be a rerecord from the previous season).

That piece of music is from the "Trelane" episode (sorry, I don’t know the title) where Kirk and company met an form of the "Q", in youth form. You really need to read the novel "Q vs Q", where there was a civil war in the "Q", and the "John DeLancie" "Q". was fighting Trelane, who wanted to be the ONLY "Q" It was a GREAT story, should have been made into a two-part episode, but Berman had stated that they would never even consider a storyline from a book, or fan production at all! Then they turned around, and made the NX-01, directly inspired by a fan design, the "Akira"!!! Go figure!

(For those of you just who’ve just been waiting for this single volume from Verisimilitude) 🙂

Ever since I saw this post, I have been digging around in my recordings, because I know that I HAD the original tracks from this, NOT the soundtrack, but the recordings that Charles Napier and Deborah Downey recorded for this episode. I had them on DAT, because these tracks, along with a couple recorded by Nichele were on the back end of some of the sound effects reel to reels. But I cannot seem to find any of them! Damn, I hate getting old!!!!

Anyway, I wanted to share a couple of pieces of trivia regarding this episode:

According to James Doohan, this was the only episode of the series that he did not like. Majel hated this episode second only to "Spock’s Brain", but the fans consistantly voted "Let that be your last battlefield" (also known as the "black and white" episode) as the worst.

Charles Napier and Deborah Downey composed several of their own songs for the episode, working with Arthur Heinemann, the episode writer. The music was recycled a year later for the movie The Hanging of Jake Ellis, which Napier and Downey starred in and sang

Executive Vice President Douglas S. Cramer came up with the insult term of "Herbert." this may have been a reference to his predecessor, Herbert F. Solow.

Twice in the episode, Kirk’s hairline part flips to his left, due to recycling footage. In both instances his ship’s insignia can also be seen flipped. The first time is when Kirk emerges from Sickbay, the second time on Eden as he reacts to Sevrin running away.

When Chapel collapses in Sickbay due to the sonic attack, the lights flicker although no other shots show this. The reason is that the footage is recycled from "Spock’s Brain."

Chekov’s full name, Pavel Andreievich Chekov, is given here for the first time.

In a 2009 interview with the "A.V. Club", Charles Napier recalled auditioning for the part of Adam, which was his first guest starring role. He won the part by jumping onto a table and singing "The house of the rising sun" in front of others trying for the part

Worse than Spock’s brain and THE worst episode?! I think not!

So virgin 1 or "channel one" has repeated voyager for the 4th time in a row I believe, what the hell. I’ve not watched tng for ages, why can’t they rotate the damn shows around a bit.
I watch it at 7, not got time to watch tng in the day/morning.

If you had read my earlier post, the cassette that this music was recorded on, that was on the last half of the second side, and the tape just ran out! No second part at all. I’m sure that Neil Norman had the music somewhere, but getting him to share anything at all, I was lucky to get what I had!

To check if you have one of these early faulty pressings, go to 5:30 in the track "First Contact" or listen to "Temporal Wake". There are 2 digital pops in "First Contact" and 3 in "Temporal Wake" …

And by the way: Got myself Sony Vegas and Cubase. Could you perhaps upload all stages of your M33 NIGHTCLUB rips somewhere? If i have a clear version of the voices only, i think i can analyze them pretty well and COMPLETELY filter them out. Also i can do some spatializing tricks on parts of the music so it sounds like at the start of the track throughout. Will probably take a few weeks but i wanna try 🙂

Babydoll , I’d say partly is due when you often says that certain score is from VS or explain why that cannot be posted and ultimately ask to remove the link, that is despite being with the best of intentions for the Shrine, it is always tiresome to read I state, but most of all enrage those ones that send you the hate mail. I think that the less we talk about issues related to VS the better, because there’s always a report post button for these cases, where the mods take notice and deal with the problem.

Thanks for updating your fantastic set of Trek Covers, much appreciated!

If I may be so bold, I’m adding a few comments/corrections:

1. Thanks for the correction of George Duning’s name – Verisimilitude has haunted me for years with his mis-spelling of GD’s name over at demonoid (he finally got it right a few weeks ago, though, after a little bit of pushing by me! In case you read this, hello Veri, my friend! 🙂

2. There is still one episode title left for correction, JonC: "Is There No Truth in Beauty?" should be "Is There In Truth No Beauty?" (The episode title is from a poem by the 17th century English poet and clergyman George Herbert, from his poem "Jordan (I)", line 2: "Who says that fictions only and false hair/ Become a verse? Is there in truth no beauty?")

3. Including "Miri", "Space Seed", "Obsession", "A Private Little War" makes sense for the time being, if you take into account Verisimilitude’s decision to include a few cues from those episodes (by adding them as "Bonus Tracks" to other episode scores produced in the same time period). But to tell the truth, those 4 episodes have been listed by several sources as having only tracked music, meaning no additional music was composed (to name two sources: Jeff Bond’s "Music of Star Trek" and even a publication by Fred Steiner, of which I have a copy somewhere). That doesn’t necessarily mean those tracks have been used in earlier Star Trek episodes (I for one couldn’t identify them myself as tracked music from other episodes, at least for now). That does leave 2 possibilities:

– They may be cues composed by some Star Trek composer (Steiner/Mullendore comes to mind, according to Verisimilitude, which I strongly would agree with!) which were intended for some earlier episode, but didn’t get it into the final cut. (In the case of Mullendore, that episode would be his only contribution, "The Conscience of the King").

– They may be stock cues, without a specific episode in mind – just some library with generic trek music, for later use. That would only be the case for Steiner, though, since Mullendore certainly was brought in just to score "The Conscience of the King", and adding some cues not intended for that episode would make no sense for him. (But I may be wrong here.)

3. Including "The Squire of Gothos" and "The Way to Eden" makes sense, also, for its stock music/songs. That leaves only "Requiem for Methuselah", which has the "Brahms waltz paraphrase" – there is a rip of this cue available by now, which Verisimilitude added as Bonus track to his score of "Plato’s Stepchildren".

4. Finally, why did you include "Whom Gods Destroy?" – officially it has only tracked music, and Verisimilitude didn’t include any bonus tracks for them (or did I miss something here?).

BTW, is this also a iTunes exclusive? What’s the release date/year of production of this arrangements? As far as I know, Gerald Fried is still alive – he’s 82 – but his last entry in imdb.com was for the TV Movie "Roots: The Gift" (1988), so in the last 22 years he may have done some projects of his own, including this arrangement of some of his best Star Trek entries.

There are small sections that sound like the Betazed Gardens (the TNG episode where Lwaxana & Co are abducted by a Ferengi)
and some few later chords sound a bit like ST TNG battle bits. Also, funny enough, some electric guitar later would have
done well in the Enterprise (Archer) series, at least "viewed" from an end titles perspective.
All instances of similarities are very short. But then Ron Jones is always worth listening 🙂

What’s new? Requiem for Methuselah added, Whom Gods Destroy removed, titles in all caps and added complete score project as a subtitle. Version numbers, I think, are not a good idea, since these covers can not only be used for previous versions, they can be used for future ones as well. (And there will be future ones. Somebody’s going to invent a filter that removes sfx and dialogue, or source music is going to turn up in somebody’s attic, and we’re going to do this over again.)
Barring any glaring errors on my part, the only thing left to change is composer names for episodes like "Miri," if different composers are found.

I remember actually obtain a libery hardback binding of this book, having searched for it for years.

Did Leonard redo this audiobook as it would be great to hear him speak his own words.

I’ll check around about an audio book version of I Am Not Spock read by Nimoy, I hadn’t heard about that. EDIT: Negative, I looked around and the only one is the version read by Carl Jansen that izbot posted. I do know Nimoy read excerpts from it and it was recorded on the Star Trek Tapes album I mentioned a little while back. Unfortunately, there’s no place to download that; it’s for sale online, but not for download. Please, if anyone has that, please come forward and upload it if you do have it. Odd, though, that Nimoy DID read his own I AM Spock for that audio book.

After your changing all the titles to caps, you omitted an "a" in one title:

"Who Mourns for Adonis?" should correctly be "Who Mourns for Adonais?"

This name had bugged me since the first time I was aware of the original epsiode title (I’m German, and here the episode was named "Wer trauert um Apoll?" – "Who Mourns for Apollo?"). Now I found out what’s the origin of this name (using wikipedia.org):

Of course, Adonis is the well-known Greek God of fertility, but the name Adonais has a slightly different origin. According to wikipedia:

"The title of the episode is taken from a line from Percy Bysshe Shelley’s 1821 poem Adonais, Stanza 47, line 415.

…

The title of the poem is likely a merging of the Greek "Adonis", the god of fertility, and the Hebrew "Adonai" (meaning "Lord")."

One other thing: Being a piano player myself, I observed the following: in the episode "Requiem for Methuselah", the music sheet Spock holds in his hand (which was used for your cover) does NOT, as a matter of fact, show the Brahms paraphrase by Ivan Ditmars as heard in the episode. Maybe it shows a faksimile of another Brahms waltz (which, of course, must have been known in 1969)? You can see the name of Brahms on top of the sheet, after all… It would have been nice if Ditmars would have produced a "fake faksimilie" of his own Brahms paraphrase, but maybe that wasn’t allowed for legal reasons. As I’m not very good at recognizing Brahms known waltzes, maybe someone here can shed any light on this mystery and is able to identify the waltz as shown in Spock’s hand? (That’s a classic nitpick, which I’m surely not the first one to recognize!)

Well, speaking of stories, has anyone heard the story of "Kevin Bueller"? William Shatner wrote about him in the book that he wrote about directing Star Trek 5, about the "Poor little rich kid" that kept breaking into Paramount! I guess that the book was actually written by Shatner’s daughter!

They aren’t produced as much anymore — an adaptation of the 2009 movie read by Zach Quinto appears somewhere in this thread I think. Prior to that the last ones produced were for Josepha Sherman’s Vulcan’s Soul trilogy in the mid-2000s. Before that they largely disappeared around the mid-late 90s. Most were released on cassette and only in abridged versions (though unabridged versions of the Vulcan’s Soul trilogy books and the 2009 movie adaptation were released). Though many were also released on MP3 CD. None have ever been made for Star Trek Enterprise (and incidently no comic book versions of ENT have ever been produced either despite the fact Trek comics have continued to be published virtually uninterrupted since TOS debuted).

Oh yeah, and there were actually three Sulu audio adventures released.

I realize my error: Melanie appeared in cameo in STV as a Yeoman on the bridge (she knocks over a cart while Kirk is trying to speak to "Admiral Bob" — Lisabeth acted as Shatners personal assistant during filming and chronicled it in the book.

Both daughters had cameos in "Miri" ‘way back in the old days.

And of course Williamtaylor1969 (Craig Huxley) appeared in "Operation: Annihilate!" as Kirk’s nephew Peter! (Lol, I couldn’t resist, William!)

Thinking of it from an art department issue, the most likely explanations is that they transcribed an existing waltz and just signed it Brahms, or they simply copied a random piece of music. (It could just be gibberish, but if they went through the effort to sign it, it would be worth it to use SOMEBODY’s sheet music.) I have neither a piano nor the ability to play one, but it seems that if one were to play what is visible in the image…well, if it’s a real piece, it should be apparent what it is pretty quickly.

After looking at the sheet and hearing the midi file, I detected some minor differences to the Ditmars version as played in the original episode, but it may be voluntary to create, as you said, a "simplified" version.

Now, all we have to do is creating a fake handwritten Brahms faksimile of this sheet, give it to Michael Okuda and let him insert it in the next version of "Star Trek Remastered"! 🙂

Well, Kevin Bueller was this young kid that I met at a Los Angeles party once (ONLY once, and that was once too many!) and the first thing that you noticed about him, was he really looked like a young Kyle McLaughlin, in his early days from "DUNE", or "Blue Velvet". Even though he was only 17 or 18 when I met him, he looked much older. He was a very well to do young man, both parents had "old money", and he was apparently spoiled from a very early age. Even though he had never met me, somehow he had known who I was, even back in the early 80’s! He followed me around all night long, filling me with stories of his adventures within the studio system, bragging about breaking into Universal studios, and stealing all of the "Battle of Galactica" costumes. As the story goes (according to Kevin) there was a panel on the top of the Galactica ride that could be opened by removing a few screws. So Kevin and a couple of his friends went into the stage, and climbed onto a catwalk at the top of the stage, which had ladders on either end of the catwalk. Climbing down the ladder, his friends and he went into the dressing rooms, and filled several trash bags with about 20 costumes, helmets, and props.
They were working on one of the Cylon costumes, since they were all bolted onto steel poles that were set into the concrete floor, when security opened one of the large sliding doors that allowed the trams into the stage area. Kevin and his friends ran to the ladders, and started to climb up to the catwalk, hoping to make an escape thru the hole on the roof. I should point out at this point that the back of the stage actually came very close to one of the hills on the Universal back lot, and this is how Kevin and his friends got up to the roof, they just jumped from the hillside, onto the roof!
Since Kevin was the last one on the ladder, as he started climbing up, one of his "friends", a man named John Riley had decided that they needed to rid themselves of some dead weight, so he kicked Kevin in the face, knocking him to the floor, to be surrounded by security. While they were busy with Kevin, the rest of the crew could make their escape. What they never counted on, was that another security guard was climbing up the OTHER ladder, trying to head them off!
When John Riley reached the catwalk, he saw the other guard reaching the top of the ladder, about 20 feet up from the stage floor. John climbed over to the guard, and sprayed his face with pepper spray, causing him to fall to the concrete floor below, breaking his back, according to Kevin.
John Riley and his friends did get away, never arrested, and the costumes, etc. were never recovered. Kevin was only 16 or 17, so he was turned over to his father, who was a very well known and prominent Los Angeles attorney. John Riley’s father was a LAPD detective!! Go figure!

Stay tuned for part two, where Kevin breaks into Paramont costume building, stealing 6 trash bags of TREK costumes, causing problems on Star Trek 4 and 5, and STTNG!

What a shame.

Kevin had broken into Universal so often, that the security people all knew Kevin on sight, in case he took the tour during the day, just to "case out" a building, or to check out a way into the lower lot. One night, he broke into the transportation building, where Universal had parked the Knightrider Trans-am vehicle, they had 8 of those for the first season alone! There was a "hero" vehicle, which had the full dashboard, and there was a stunt version, which had a fake driver’s
seat, for when KITT had to drive the car alone. All of the cars were open, and the keys left inside, for easy access for the crews to drive the cars to locations on the back lot, etc. Apparently, one day, Hasselhoff was drunk, and in a mood, and was driving one of the cars, playing "chicken" with the trams! Although this was reported in the papers, it was a thrill for the people in the trams to actually see a major star of TV, driving the world famous KITT, on the backlot!

Anyway, back to the story. Kevin climbed down the back lot hilltop, and went directly to the lower lot, and into the back of the transportation building, which had a hill on the backside. It was here that Kevin decided to make his entrance. Not having any panel that would be easily opened, he decided to remove a few bolts from the aluminun wall panel, and, pulling it back, it got loose from him, and make a loud clanging noise that the security later reported hearing about 1:30 in the morning! Bending the wall panel back, it gave Kevin a small hole to climb thru. He was in the building for more than four hours, removing all of the metal instrumentation panels from the Hero car, and trying to yank the fiberglass dashboard, which was only held in place by industrial two-sided tape! Finally giving up on the dashboard, Kevin crawled out of the hole in the aluminum wall, only to discover that it was after 5:00 in the morning, and the sun had already come up and the whole backlot was bathed in morning light! The security saw Kevin, walking out by the Psycho house, and called the LAPD to patol by the back fence, hoping to catch Kevin, or spot the station wagon that he always drove. They were not successful, and Kevin once again escaped with the loot!

The studio had paid a TON of money, getting the design of the Knightrider car, as well as the LED panels designed and created, the electronics alone had to be run off of a second battery and electrical system in the cars, custom created for this vehicle alone! Kevin took the panels, which had the electronics installed in them, and sold them to a collector, in a shop on Hollywood Blvd. for only 75.00 for the whole bag! The collector, knowing Kevin’s past, called the LAPD, and when
detectives showed up at the shop, the first thing they did was showed the shop owner a picture of Kevin, which the shop owner ID’d as the person who sold him the panels, and in doing so, the detectives totally blew the case! instead of showing a group of photos, and allowing the owner to ID which one was Kevin, they showed only one photo, and basically threw the whole case out the window! Kevin’s father had a field day with this court case, stating that the LAPD had
an agenda against his on, and they were harrassing him, trying to get him thrown in jail! Needless to say, Kevin walked again!

Actually, there is a very interesting side story here. There were two fellows, in Orange County, that were known to me. They ran a business called "Supercollector" and had a site of the same name (LONG gone now, both) Their names were John and Tom. Tom was an original "Fanboy" and really looked like the fat guy with the black Star Wars t-shirt in the Fanboys movie! John started up "Supertracks" records, and had a shop in Fountain Valley for many years. I got alot of my rare soundtracks and hard to find stuff as well from them. I didn’t like dealing with John, as he was always pressuring me to give him some of my personal collection, in trade for 50 or 100 soundtracks, and I KNEW what he would do with MY stuff! He was really lusting after my Star Trek 2 music, since I had about 3 DATs worth of recordings, most of which has already been released, but not at that time. John and Tom converted one room in their store into a TREK museum, with many VERY rare items, including costumes, many props and some set pieces. On one visit, I was very happy to see that John was not in the store, and I could deal with Tom on a "no hassle" and no demands basis (Tom was cool!) What I didn’t know was that John was hiding in his office, and when he saw me looking thru the records and CDs in the soundtracks area, he came out and got me, saying that he had "something" in his office that he wanted to show me! Entering into his office, I noticed that John had Picard’s command chair, sitting on top of his desk! He had informed me that he had paid 5 Paramount security people to help him remove the chair from the set! He stated that he had given each of them $1,000.00 to keep quiet! Apparently the set was being cleaned between seasons, and they needed to replace the carpets, so they removed all of the chairs! John told me that he planned to place the chair "down a deep well" for about 20 years, and time is almost UP!! (hehehehehe)
When I was on the studio lot, about 2 months later, I noticed that the usual people on security had been replaced with all new faces. I later found out that the entire security force had been given their "pink slips", and they replaced everyone with the exception of the head of security, but that the upper management of the studio had "put him on notice" as well! Later, Tom told John that he wanted to get out of the store, as they were in financial trouble, Tom’s mom was their bookkeeper, so John let Tom keep most of the Trek collection, and John kept "Supertracks" and all of the records/CDs! Tom made a very wise decision, at his mom’s coaching, because the shop apparently had not paid taxes in over 5 years, and since the agreement that Tom had John sign, basically freed him of ANY financial involvement of the Supertracks and Supercollector entities, saved Tom from going to jail for tax fraud/evasion.
John had to come up with 732,000.00 in back taxes and fines to keep out of jail, but then, John’s parents were like Kevin’s, very well to do, and they paid his fines/taxes to keep him out of trouble and jail. Last I heard, John had become a rep for the studios, and for some stars! Tom’s whereabouts are totally unknown. Incredible!

Anyway, back to the story of KEVIN!:

After all of the costumes at Universal were removed from the costume department, Kevin turned his attention to Paramount, and the TREK items! Of course, he just HAD to hit Universal once more, and discovering that the costume department was totally empty of Galactica items, he decided to
leave a little "farewell" present for the staff. He kicked in a door to the offices inside of the costume area, and opened one of the desk drawers that were in the office. Pulling down his pants, he left a deposit inside of the drawer, and closed it again! Seemed like the police could never do anything
against this creep!

Since Paramount was offering tours of the lot to the public, apparently Kevin had decided to go on the tour a couple of times, creating a map of the studio, on a large yellow legal pad (the map was later discovered, when Kevin was arrested). Since the studio rear wall had bordered the Hollywood graveyard, Kevin would go into the graveyard when it was open, and wait for nightfall. After that, he would climb to the roof of the mausoleum inside the graveyard, which gave Kevin a birdseye view of the Paramount back lot. He would sit there, and mark the comings and goings of the whole security staff, marking the times on the back of the map, as well as the locations of various guards. Once he had everything set, he contacted a friend of his from Fresno. "John Castillo" was a wannabe SPFX artist, who basically lived off of his wife’s money, since she owned her own beauty shop. John was in the process of building his own KITT "Knightrider" car, and this really interested Kevin, since he had stolen many of the parts which he sold to John for his car.
John drove down from Fresno, and met up with Kevin, who was waiting at a resturant in "Gower Gultch", a small strip mall on Gower avenue, just up the block from the Gower gate of Paramount. Kevin showed John the map that he had drawn, and showed the possible locations that he wanted to investigate that evening. Slipping over the back fence of the graveyard, Kevin and John slipped down a back corner behind stage 29, where the "Arsenio Hall" show was taped. They found out that there was a small gap in the barbwire right on the corner, and they could slip down on a rope, and then throw the rope over the wall, and retrieve it at a later time! It would be easy to just walk out the front gate, or one of the side gates, acting like an employee.
The costume dept was next to "Marathon" street, and Kevin and John were amazed to discover that the chainlink fence had a gap of about 10-11 inches! Plenty of room to slip costumes thru! Kevin figured that they could park his station wagon right next to that gap and slip all sorts of costumes to friends outside the gate, but he needed to know the security guards routine first! Finding a nice place to hide, that had full view of the costume building and the surrounding area, John and Kevin watched the whole night thru, marking the times and pattern of different guards’ routes, and when daylight came, they simply walked across the studio lot, past the "B" tank, which could be filled with water, and out the side Gower gate, where they had left their cars.
It took 6 months of planning for Kevin to feel totally comfortable with his plan to make a hit on the Paramount costume department. By that time, John had backed out of the deal, saying that there were too many risks! What Kevin had not know, was that John had been caught in another "sting" of movie items, and he had turned out to be a rat, and told LAPD detective John Winchester all about Kevin’s plan to steal costumes from Paramount.
Kevin contacted his friend "Scott Dunkel" from San Diego, and another person "Dan" from Santa Monica. Both had agreed to help Kevin with his plan. On one particular day, a Friday, Kevin, Dan & Scott got into the lot, somehow, possibly with a pass, and they walked into the costume department, and when into the back, where there were several dressing areas, with closets that could be locked. The three went into three different closets, at about 5:00 in the afternoon, and locked the doors from the inside. They waited until 2:00 in the morning before getting out. Kevin found out that once the costume building was locked up, nobody from outside ever went in, so he figured that they could spend their time in there, without fear of being discovered!
Climbing the stairs to the second story, there was a set of double doors, which led to the area where all the TREK costumes were stored. Kevin came with a pry bar, and went to work on the door. Apparently, from the damage, he really went crazy on that door! Finally gaining entrance to the storage area, Kevin, Dan & Scott were amazed to see 7 rows of costumes, some even from the original series, but mostly from the movies. The Next Generation costumes were being stored at another location at that time. The three men went to work, stuffing six industrial sized trash bags with costumes. Kevin had figured out that each man could carry two bags, tied with a piece of rope, and therefore it could be carried over their shoulders, allowing them
to run, if need be! They took their time, rolling the costumes as tight as possible, making sure that they gathered as many important costumes as possible. It was later reported that they stole $500,000.00 worth of costumes, according to the Los Angeles Times at the time of the breakin. The newspaper report also stated that there was a hole in the side gate, by the costume department "Big enough to drive a MACK truck through"!
Several months went by, without any break in the case. LAPD det. John Winchester went to every TREK convention, pulling fans aside with impressive looking costumes, seeing if they were any of the missing costumes! One fan was arrested, and taken into Paramount, only to be told that the costume was NOT original, and once released, he had to find his own way back to the convention, out by LAX!!!
Winchester remembered his meeting with John Castillo, and so he contacted John to find out any information about the breakin, but John had no info, having no contact with Kevin. Winchester told Castillo to try and get as much info, to call Kevin and make him an offer for the costumes, etc. and see if he would jump at the offer. Kevin did! A meeting was set up in Los Angeles, for a straight trade of John’s Knightrider car for all of the costumes that Kevin had left! John drove the Transam down from Fresno, and met up with Kevin in the Universal parking lot (of all places). Winchester, and several LAPD officers arrested Kevin on the spot, and got the names and addresses of Dan and Scott, who turned state’s evidence against Kevin for a reduced plea! Kevin said that he had bought all of the costumes from a TREK fan that he had known, and was told that they were just duplicates, however, the testamony from Dan and Scott really convicted Kevin.

Needless to say, Kevin was out of jail in less than 8 months, and proceeded onto industrial burglary, going back to jail 4 more times. Also, LAPD and Universal studios never realized that all of the stolen Knightrider parts were used to catch Kevin, and they had the whole car sitting in their parking lot! John Castillo had been arrested on several occasions, always for receiving stolen goods, but never got any jail time! Most of this story is a matter of public record, if anyone finds fault in my telling!

The story shows that Kevin was caught with only 50,000.00 of costumes, and they had recovered only 150,000.00 which means that there are somewhere $350,000.00 in TREK costumes hiding in a private collection! Kevin was later accused, and arrested for several more breakins at Paramount, stalling the productions of Star Trek 4 & 5, and he even broke into a dressing trailer of Michael Dorn, stealing several STTNG uniforms, and three latex rubber WORF headpieces, which stalled the filming of an episode for three days, before more headpieces could be finished and delivered to the studios. No evidence of Kevin’s involvement in any of those breakins could ever be found, so he was released.

The current whereabouts of Kevin, Dan, Scott or John is unknown. John Winchester retired from LAPD shortly after Kevin’s arrest, got his full pension, and was given a plush office job, as a special investigator for Paramount studios! He has since retired from there, and last heard was living in San Bernardino.

Maybe you should consider a small publishing comoany and not one of the big ones.

But i’ll bet Paramount and Universal would try to block such a book, which i couldn’t understand why when so much information can be found out on the internet, as you have shown us with the linked article.

While in bed last night, my wife Sarah, asked me if I told you guys about "Hidden treasures", and I looked at her as if "What the HELL"?, and then she reminded me!
Apparently, according to Kevin, during some of his early breakins at Universal, he buried trash bags filled with Galactica stuff out in the back lot, whenever security was active, so he wouldn’t be caught with the loot, and then he forgot where he buried it! He said that everytime he went in, he tried to locate the spot, but there were about 3 or 4 bags that he couldn’t locate! So, they could still be out there, somewhere!

Well, I can get you a publisher. Paramount’s not an issue, since they already publish this (http://www.sybpress.com/titles.htm#MJaneway). However, the bigger concern is that Kevin (or more specifically his parents) don’t sue for libel. You’d have to be able to prove EVERY story you told (three sources or documentation). And you’d need a lot of them to fill even a small book.

By the way, there’s a fun coincidence in languages here. In german SUED is the short form of Samenueberdruck. Samenueberdruck means, the physical pressure level of your sperm count is so high, you need to … pass them on as quickly as possible.
The word SUED comes across like a medical term, giving the impression of a level of reasoning for ones necessatiy of doing it (which, quiet the opposite can rob you of any reason whatsoever). The female populace of Germany remains to be convinced, that SUED’s a real medical emergency only they can solve and w new, more reassuring term has yet to be found. Having their part in SUED to a rather high degree, one would like to see german women to be less scientific about the matter and rather feel motherly obligations to help the helpless where ever they can. You’re welcome! It was kind of a chintzy deal — a CDR with badly scanned and largely unreadable cover art. The "autograph" by the "producer" was just scanned as well (although i suspect those were his fingerprints all over the CD, lol)! He didn’t include any of the photos or replica of the convention booklet. I guess he didn’t want to make the extra trip to Kinko’s! He did, however, include his business card which apparently "guarantees his signature for life" (whatever the hell that means!). Anyway, its yours for the taking now…

I did have "Transformation" back in the day of it’s original release in the UK on audio tape, but have since lost it.

I just wished they did more like these, a bit like what Big Finish do with Dr Who audios.

Could you give some tracks/timecodes to these pops so that I can check my own CD? That way if I have a ‘clean’ one, I can upload it.

On ‘Temporal Wake’, some pops appear at around 00:50 and at 01:01. And on ‘First Contact’ they are easily noticeable at 05:30.

Hmm, just checked on the mp3s from the expanded version I have and no pops at those times. I assumed this version of the album was common, but I dunno…maybe not? Is this worth putting up or am I making an obvious blunder here?

No, there is not. They only did one and two, and got into some problems with Fred Steiner, and his legal team!

That’s interesting to hear, William. This finally explains why this series of re-recordings were cancalled. Considering your earlier remarks about Fred Steiner’s ego it comes as no surprise that he would oppose to those re-arrangements. I personally think that the first two volumes have been done very well, even if Tony Bremner, in most cases, had a much slower tempo (e.g. in "Is There In Truth No Beauty") – but that’s a matter of interpretation (even Bernard Herrmann didn’t always have the same tempi with his various re-recordings of his own scores, e.g. Psycho). Besides, we could be thankful to have ANY new TOS music available back in the ’80ies! My favourite Bremner interpretations are "ITITNB" and "Paradise Syndrome"!

I vaguely remember an announcement in some catalogue regarding Vol. 3 and 4, maybe you saw it also, Lois Lane? One of the episodes which was going to be re-interpreted by Tony Bremner was "Catspaw" (surely a suite of some 20 minutes), the others I do not remember. (Maybe it was "Doomsday Machine", which was done by Steiner the same year on his own vol. 2 of re-arrangements!) Is there anybody who saw this announcement and knows which episodes were to be covered by Label X? (Not that it matters anymore, I’m just curious).

The questions remain, William: why would Steiner’s legal team take action against Label X? Did Tony Bremner plan to interpret any Steiner scores? (Not the case with "Catspaw", which is by Fried – maybe Steiner was going to do "Catspaw" later some time, which he never did!). Would they be against new interpretions done already by Steiner? Well, I think that this problem arose out of the fact that Tony Bremner was one of the "Extra" people to help out on ST2 and ST3. He was listed as "Additional personell" for the scoring sessions, don’t know if that was ever made "official", because there were a ton of extra people on both productions. I seem to remember that he was more present on ST2 than ST3, but he was a fantastic young composer, and he did a couple of TV things, and not much after that! Fred Steiner really, (and I mean REALLY) wanted to do the first movie, but when Gene had approved of Jerry Goldsmith, then Fred backed off (or so the story goes). It was kind of like "Well, if you can get HIM…..’! When ST2 came about, Fred was really jumping to get the assignment, but Gene was out, and Bennett was in, so things went in a different direction, and Fred really had his nose out of joint. I had heard that Tony had recorded Volume one AND two at the same time, since the studio time, and the orchestra time was extremely limited for such a "far out’ project. I, personally, LOVED the work, even though the tempo was slow, as you had pointed out, but I also notice, every time I listen to it, that there are more horns on this piece, or there was a pause in the music, where there was no pause in the original. AND, I have to agree with you, "Is there in truth no beauty" is possibly my favorite of all of those tracks. Really great stuff.

Khitomer: No, 1969 was a time when ALOT of stuff happened, most of all important, it was the first time I GOT LAID!!!! :):):) But you have to realize, that the opening of the Haunted Mansion, the Manson murders (On the SAME day as the HM opened, August 9!!!) the cancellation of TREK, and the breakup of the beatles on September 15, John was gone from the band! Well, I think that this problem arose out of the fact that Tony Bremner was one of the "Extra" people to help out on ST2 and ST3. He was listed as "Additional personell" for the scoring sessions, don’t know if that was ever made "official", because there were a ton of extra people on both productions. I seem to remember that he was more present on ST2 than ST3, but he was a fantastic young composer, and he did a couple of TV things, and not much after that! Fred Steiner really, (and I mean REALLY) wanted to do the first movie, but when Gene had approved of Jerry Goldsmith, then Fred backed off (or so the story goes). It was kind of like "Well, if you can get HIM…..’! When ST2 came about, Fred was really jumping to get the assignment, but Gene was out, and Bennett was in, so things went in a different direction, and Fred really had his nose out of joint. I had heard that Tony had recorded Volume one AND two at the same time, since the studio time, and the orchestra time was extremely limited for such a "far out’ project. I, personally, LOVED the work, even though the tempo was slow, as you had pointed out, but I also notice, every time I listen to it, that there are more horns on this piece, or there was a pause in the music, where there was no pause in the original. AND, I have to agree with you, "Is there in truth no beauty" is possibly my favorite of all of those tracks. Really great stuff.

Khitomer: No, 1969 was a time when ALOT of stuff happened, most of all important, it was the first time I GOT LAID!!!! :):):) But you have to realize, that the opening of the Haunted Mansion, the Manson murders (On the SAME day as the HM opened, August 9!!!) the cancellation of TREK, and the breakup of the beatles on September 15, John was gone from the band! It was a very crazy time, a very weird year!

Thanks for those great insights, you must really be an insider, man! I wonder what he had to do with STII & III exactly – IMDB.COM doesn’t list him there, but that doesn’t mean anything, right? Maybe he was helping James Horner with the scoring sessions, or even had a hand in orchestrating the score. After ST III (1983), he may have found interest in trek music and found out how good the scores of the series were, so he decided to re-arrange some of them. AND, he was able to use the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London to the fullest, as opposed to the small orchestra used by the various trek composers, due to budgetary limits. The full orchestra sound really makes the music richer and more developed, so the term "Symphonic Suites" is very much appliable here, as opposed to just replaying what was heard in the episodes. The German term "Sinfonische Tondichtung" comes to mind (meaning "Symphonic Tone Poem").

Interesting to hear the story about Fred Steiner wanting to score STTMP and, later, STII. Glad he didn’t get the jobs – he was good with his tv scores, no doubt, but STTMP wasn’t meant for him, and majestro Goldsmith was the best choice for this job – what he created was crying for Oscar! Horner’s score for ST II was also genius!

Yes, I read about Label X Vol. 3 & 4 in a book about STAR TREK TOS merchandise products. I think the title of the book was STAR TREK COLLECTIBLES.
It was very sad, that Vol. 3 & 4 were not released, because the re-recordings do have great sound quality.

Yes, now I remember the title also. I saw a copy of this volume of "ST Collectibles" in my comic shop, way back in the 80ies, and skipped through it, and found the reference. Do you recall the other episode names in it? When I found this announcement, I waited, and waited, and waited… and when nothing happened for a few years, I even wrote a letter in the early 90ies or so to "Fifth Continent Music Corp" in Walnut Creek/California (where Label X is seated), and I even got an answer (I live in Germany!), but it was negative, alas! They just wrote the project was cancelled, but they didn’t explain why, like William did, though, so now the story comes to full circle.

The format of the audio book is nice, with Nimoy advancing the story along as "Spock" and Takei just reading the rest.

In fact the aria is dramaturgically unnecessary (in the current production of Deutsche Oper Berlin they even cut it down to one verse and the refrain that is in the movie) and it is the only entrance of Hylas at all.

On YouTube somebody had mosted the music from Elite Force, looked like a DVD (or whatever) rip, but there was this one track split into 45 different pieces. I think it was some continuous background music, or something. Each piece ended discordantly; when I tried to paste them together it didn’t work.

Then I saw somewhere that there is a CD of the music that was included with some versions of the game. Have you that?

No, I didn’t make the one for Volume three, that was made by Mark Banning over at Crescendo, back in the day. He has not been there for over 10 years. I just followed his "template" and laid this one out exactly as he did, so they would be harmonious.
Do you have the Youtube link? I cannot find it. I could piece the different tracks together again, with my WAV editor program, where I can "Meld" one track into another, and lay one stereo track over another. It really is a great program to play with, it has helped me out SO many times!

Both iTunes and Amazon Digital also offer a single called "Star Trek Tekkno Mix" credited to Orion which features the same music as this one by Two Of Galaxy. This is an error. Orion’s Tekkno Mix was originally released in the early nineties and is completely different (I hope to acquire it someday and add it here). Well, apparently, so did Leslie Neilsen! Here’s a story from the NY times:

Tonight’s impending screening of J.J. Abrams’ reboot of "Star Trek rekindled my memories of a decades-ago interview with the esteemed Leslie Nielsen when he was promoting the first "Naked Gun” movie. I noted that besides playing straight roles in everything from "The Opposite Sex” (a musical remake of "The Women”) to "Nuts” (as the john Barbara Streisand kills), Nielsen had managed to guest on virtually every TV series from the ’50s through the ’80s — with one very notable exception. "Well, they weren’t going to ask me to do ‘Star Trek’ because it was ripped off from ‘Forbidden Planet,’ or at least that’s the way I feel about it,” Nielsen told me. "It was a blatant copy.” Fred McLeod Wilcox’s "Forbidden Planet,” an uncredited sci-fi version of Shakespeare’s "The Tempest,” indeed is more cerebral than most genre flicks of that era, if produced on a vastly more lavish scale than Mr. Roddenbery’s low-budget series. If it lacks a racially and sexually diverse crew for the spacecraft commanded by Nielsen (MGM wasn’t about to offend Southern drive-in owners in 1956), the 23-century technology on display (like corded cell phones) is entirely consistent with the now-anachronistic vision of the future displayed in "Star Trek.”

Now, I can see a direct connection between FP and Trek, especially if you look at "the Cage" pilot, BOY is there alot of similar situations! The transporter tubes, and the warp light conversion tubes are almost exact. The whole crew, with the exec officer being called "Number one", and all of the equipment. These all look like early versions of what was seen on "the Cage"! However, I CANNOT see any connection, either direct or distant, between FP and LIS, PF and Stargate, Trek and Stargate, etc. Some people just like to jump to conclusions. Anyway, this subject caused a big internet fight over at "Trek.com" a few years back, and the thread was closed and the subject was banned from returning! WOW, talk about getting a life!
And, since just about everything in Hollywood is stolen from one source or another, as was the case, when "Babylon 5" was taken, by it’s creator, over to Paramount for consideration. Six months later, the studio rejected the pilot, because they were "already working" on "Deep space 9", a story about a space station, located next to a wormhole! What do you think Babylon 5 was? It’s situations like this that really get my dander up, pissed at people in the business who are constantly stealing from others. I have had my work stolen several times, and never got paid or credit for my work. I can tell you folks, it really leaves a bitter taste in your mouth!

It should be noted that the actors did not actually participate in this production. They are just audio clips from existing episodes edited into conversations with the fan characters.

I really expected to see more of that stuff, long before now. With all of the available conversations of Shatner and Nimoy, it would be so easy to do. Take a look at Steve Martin’s movie "Dead men don’t wear plaid", it was a really funny movie, and he used alot of old footage, threw himself in similar sets, in black and white, and even had a face to face with Humphrey Bogart! I thought, being a fan of old movies like that, that this film was great, but the critics hated it, and it bombed at the box office. Oh, well, can’t please everyone. 🙂

That’s interesting — I can’t recall ever hearing about that. I only know of the following versions:

1. The original commercial release (1979, 9 tracks)
2. The 20th Anniversary commercial release (1998 2-disc set, 18 track TMP OST + Inside Star Trek rerelease)
3. The "Collectors Definitive Edition" Bootleg (31 tracks)
4. The Complete Recording Sessions Bootleg (3 discs, 48 tracks)

No alternate cues for the Klingon Battle appear on any of those. If such a thing does exist I’d naturally be interested! Maybe William knows? He says he had a bunch of those TMP masters long before they were made available.

i just listened to JOHN BARRY’S "THE SPECIALIST" AND THE TRACK "THE PARKING LOT BOMB" SOUND ALOT LIKE RON JONES’ RECURRING ROMULAN THEME (e.g. in TNG "The Defector").
I am no expert in music (but have a good ear :), so i express it in laymen terms: With Ron you have the Dida-Dida-Dida-Dida main tune. Running below that tune is the same one, only
faster. The latter feature is missing from Barry but still one can hear the similiarities.

There’s something else i found: The Cape Cod piece in Jerry Goldsmiths "Coma" sound alot like Jo Staffords rendition of "Moonlight in Vermont", especially the piano parts in "Moonlight"
– but you really need a VERY great ear to hear this. I figure Jerry Goldsmith must have known the tune.
I have no link on Barry but you can just type "Jo Stafford Moonlight in Vermont" on youtube and you’ll find it immediately. I find knowing both songs beautify each other 🙂
Stafford is a great singer by the way !

Are you sure you’re not talking about Aliens? I know part of that score is in Die Hard, at the end when Al shoots Karl. It was the part from the Aliens score that was originally supposed to accompany the scene at the end when the Queen Alien gets blown out of the airlock. (They ended up tracking that part from "Bishop’s Countdown".)

Oh, and a small piece of trivia regarding Paul Winchell, he was THE man, who created the artificial heart! This is a FACT! He used to work on a farm, and created an artificial heart for a COW!!! He got a patent and everything, and all the fancy doctors that played around with putting his creation into a human had to come to him for approval!!!! I thought that was GREAT! They say that he is the last inventor, who privately got a patent on an invention. Everything else has come from corporations! Pity!

Oh, and Paul Winchell once beat Ricardo Moltalban in a DANCE CONTEST!!!! 🙂 talk about your TREK connections there, huh? 🙂

That is very strange, Spectre, I just d/l’d all of the links on page one, and they were working last week. did you check them out?

I am curious whether these were removed by the posters. If not, the James Horner links elsewhere may not be the only links targeted. It is starting to seem to me that all major posts are under some sort of attack. Or, its just all coincidence. Hard to tell these days….

No, I just tested the majority of William’s links on page one, and they were all okay. Perhaps some of the other links on this webpage are down, but not the trek ones
