Anyone know if Hisaishi will be scoring another Miyazaki film anytime soon?

EDIT: It seems that there will be another! It was an announcement in December that Mr. Hisaishi will be returning to compose the music for Miyazaki's film "The Wind Is Rising". It seems that it will be set to release this year :). I can't wait! I don't think I can recall not liking anything Hisaishi has written and his style seems to get better and better with each project.

I've heard so many cover versions of the Ghibli songs in any genre imaginable, but i'm always eager to listen new versions of them. Thank you sansgarantie for the latest posts.

Also thank you Tango and the anonymous uploader of Tokyo Kazoku. I've only seen your post now!

I've got to say, it's not my favourite Hisaishi... It's quite lovely, of course... but the film may be one of the most sparsely scored in history. I'm all for "less is more" film music, and I'm all for film makers who are confident in their film and don't require music slathered on every single frame. Hisaishi's music goes where it needs to go, and when it plays, it's beautiful... but, for me, a film where the composer needs to "stay out of the way" is a missed opportunity for a musician of the calibre of Hisaishi. It's like hiring Michelangelo, leading him to a magnificent white canvas, and saying to him "Yeah, can you please just do a few little things here in the corner? I kinda want to keep most of this canvas blank."

It certainly makes me feel ambivalent... on one hand, I just love the fact that in 2012, 150 minutes of film can still get by with 24 minutes of score. On the other hand, Hisaishi is one of the greats, and a longer score gives a composer more time to build themes and develop them... and nobody in Japan (or anywhere, for that matter) writes a melody better than Joe Hisaishi! This score, for me, is a tantalising glimpse of a great, great masterpiece... but it leaves me wanting. But then, who am I? I'd be happy with three hours of Hisaishi score in a one hour film... so don't listen to me. ;)

I have been looking for Soushun Monotagari OST. Has anyone got it?

Not my rip. From iTunes, I think - with many thanks to Mr Anonymous. No scans, no covers, no nothing; track listing in Japanese.

I'm rather surprised at how quickly this one showed up... suffice to say, Hisaishi gold. He even manages to pull off the Hollywood cliche sound (very occasionally, I might add, for those who worry) with great panache. A splendid, brooding theme... some rollicking action... just lovely all the way.

Disc 1 is identical to the OST edition so you can skip it if you have that already. Haven't heard disc 2 yet, only the first track which have a fantastic version of the main theme.

Major, major props to them for not arsing up the English version of Kokoro no Kakera. Can you imagine the potential there was to completely and comprehensively wreck that gorgeous piece? It almost seems like sacrilege to say so, but I prefer it to the original as performed by Hisaishi's daughter Mai Fujisawa; her voice is quite lovely, but Archie Buchanan is a professional chorister. The unique purity of the classical boy soprano, I think, is a better fit for the theme. Fujisawa's presence in just about every single Hisaishi score that requires a female vocalist, on the other hand... well, 'nuff said. Daddy is using his influence to push his pride and joy. I'd do the same thing myself... but, nonetheless...

I hope this album sells like fury. This glorious score, a modern classic, and yet another Hisaishi masterpiece, deserves nothing less.

Honky tonky wonky translation. The film's original title: "Kono Sora no Hana: Nagaoka Hanabi Monogatari", Lit.: This Sky Of Flowers: The Tale Of The Nagaoka Fireworks.

Main theme by Joe Hisaishi. This motif is used by Kosuke Yamashita. Supporting saxophone solo by Akira Sakahata in track 9. Also, supporting performance by PASCALS in track 15. "There, The Summer In The Distant" written/sung by Shozo Ize, arrangement by Kosuke Yamashita (track 17). No mention of the orchestra and the conductor in the booklet, at least I haven't found them yet ^^"

Even though Hisaishi's motif shows up a lot in Yamashita's tracks, you can still tell it's him. I think Yamashita's only good track here is the waltzy "Fireworks". The real corker is the main theme (track 1, track 18). Not as dark as Onna Nobunaga (where Yamashita also helped orchestrating, also Sachiko Miyano from Ultraman Max fame), but as Tango once said, Hisaishi at the age of 62 is still full of themes :'D

We first hear it in the first track as a trumpet solo - a cheerful melody calling back to Hisaishi's early Ghibli work (splashes of Totoro and Laputa) that expands out into a lovely pastoral piece for full orchestra. Nobody, truly nobody, can score a beautiful sunny day like Hisaishi. You can feel the warmth and taste the apples. There is a significant role for mandolin, guitar, and ukulele (unusual for Hisaishi) which blends with the orchestra beautifully, and if you're wondering what that weird springy noise is... that's the Jew's harp! (Which, incidentally, is nothing to do with Jews or Judaism, and is in fact an instrument native to the Asian continent.)

As is usually the case with film scores, the cues are short, with over half the tracks coming in under two minutes and only five tracks over three minutes... but it's Hisaishi, and he says what he needs to say in the time he has to say it. The short cues feel just long enough - and the album plays beautifully as a complete listening experience; ignore the tracks flicking past and imagine it's an episodic symphony divided up into 28 parts.

It's youthful, it's happy, it's joyous. I admit I didn't really enjoy it the first time I listened... but then I listened to it on a gorgeous summer's afternoon, relaxing with a glass of good cider, with the sun pouring down... and then it all made sense.

Coming up... we've heard Hisaishi's ode to sunshine... later on, we'll hear his ode to the sea...

I got done by the same thing. Duped into joining filesmates.com in order to get a DVD rip of the recent Final Fantasy Vana'Con concert. Queued up 8gb download. NOT MY RIP. FLAC. Many thanks indeed to a former member of FFshrine who doesn't post any more, but who has given me permission to share this with you. Track titles in English (a competent translation by a native Japanese speaker, not my usual wonky translation...) and unfortunately no booklet scans... If I find them, I'll update this post.

Joe Hisaishi scoring a prestigious nature documentary for NHK… surely this must be some fantastic dream? No dream! This is, for me, one of the rare occasions where my desires, my expectations, and the completed score, completely match up. So, what was I hoping for?

First of all, a Taiga Drama-style full length main theme – a nice, three minute chunk of music. Check. We have a delicious, fully symphonic main title theme, with a beginning, middle, and end – a concert suite tone-poem.

Secondly, a strong and romantic theme that didn’t just crop up once and then disappear forever; something that would function both as a full length theme and as a series of melodic and harmonic ideas that could be broken down into their constituent elements and peppered throughout the score. Check.

Thirdly, for Hisaishi to continue with his recent experimentation phase and try something a bit different. Check.

Finally, for Hisaishi to perhaps revisit and expand upon his “water” ideas from Ponyo. Check.

Essentially, this score is Joe Hisaishi – A Sea Symphony. If you’re looking for three descriptive words… elegant, passionate, warm. Also of interest… not even the mighty Hisaishi is above writing in what I’ve come to call the “NHK style” – there’s just something about these grand NHK scores… not for one moment do composers lose their unique voice (and certainly not Hisaishi) but there’s always *something* in there which sets the music apart from the composer’s usual style. Oshima did it in Planet Of Life and Data Map For 3.6 Billion People… Hattori Takayuki did it in Shinsengumi… Even Akira Senju did it in Furinkazan. Now, Joe Hisaishi joins the ranks and melds the NHK sound perfectly with his own technique.

Well, what can I say? I really liked Kiseki no Ringo… but I absolutely adore this one. It’s got a great theme, Hisaishi’s amazing (and STILL maturing) mastery of the modern symphony orchestra, and some cracking action - Strong Creature Of The Deep Sea, Bluntnose Sixgill Shark is just brutal; I’ve never heard Hisaishi so raw and so… dangerous – and he’s channelling Janacek! It’s funny how all over the world, documentaries consistently bring out the best in our treasured film composers… truly, there is nothing more fantastical than the natural world! Please enjoy this wonderful exercise in COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY IGNORING every single “development” modern film scoring techniques have undergone; absolutely timeless, a great score today that will still be a great score in 100 years.

Most of these ratings are accurate. I actually thought Ni no Kuni was a better score than The Wind Rises. I'd swap their ratings. About to give Deep Sea Creatures a listen.

About Ni No Kuni, I'm playing now to Ps3 videogame. Main theme interesting, and one or two secundary good themes. But my impression The composer repeat the same again and again: main theme, and secondary melodies little worked by Hisaishi (in autopilot).
Spirited Away, Hana-Bi, Mononoke Hime, Brother, or Howl's moving castle (image album) it's much better than Ni No Kuni. I remember a lot of good themes in this sundtracks and much more identity to each work.
In the last two works, Hisaishi returns to show that it's a good composer.

That is a part of the problem. I think Hisaishi's lastest works have one or two good themes, that work on your listening isolated. But the rest is very sketchy and appears to be composed with the autopilot. Miyazaki's latest work is a small work intentions, made with a reduced orchestra. However, parts of which are brilliantly composed, with affection interpret instruments. For example a secondary issue as Kaproni, which is great. The resolution to wind band airs 0:12-0:19, and play with the winds (flute included) from 0:42 - 0:58. This is real music. The resolution of the first issue accompanied by the flute in the foreground also great. This is what was not in previous Joe Hisaishi soundtracks.

Indeed, a 6/10 is not a bad note, few soundtracks this year will exceed that note. Wolverine Th 3/10, Lone Ranger 5/10, The bible 3/10, Pacific Rim 2/10 ... Another thing is that in times of scarcity, to a normal product may seem a good thing.

As in, the ones he actually sings on, not the scores to his films. "Gome-nne Takechan", "Singin' Loud II", "Ore ni Utawaseto", "Asakusa Kid", and "Golden Best" are the ones I've found info on, but nothing more than info.
