WOW waldfee! I've listening to this gem since tango share it with us 2 months ago (today!), and it has become my favourite listening from last months, so I'm really looking forward to hear how is the official release! I found a tracklist here (http://vgmdb.net/album/21993) (including english literal traduction). THANKS!!!

So here I go with a quick comparison of Nino ku ni score!:
Tango Version VS. Official Release
I checked the tracklist of both versions looking for some new tracks and checked beginings and endings of the tracks.
Ready?... FIGHT!
01. m01 -> 01. Ni no kuni main theme
02. m02 -> 21. Fragments of hearts
03. m03 -> 02. Morning of beginning
04. m04 -> 03. Hotroit
05. m05 -> 04. Incident occurence!
06. m05a -> 12. Crisis
07. m05b -> 13. Tension
08. m06 -> 05. Arie ~Recollection~ [m06 is a few longer cause adds some looping]
09. m07 -> 06. Shizuku
10. m08 -> 07. Mighty magic [m08 adds few seconds at the end]
11. m09 -> 08. Field ["Field" has some piano chords at the end]
12. m10 -> 18. To the decisive battle
13. m11 -> 09. Neko kingdom's castle town [better quality]
14. m12 -> 10. Desert kingdom's town [better quality]
15. m13 -> 11. Imperial march [added a proper conclusion]
16. m14 -> 15. Jabo, the black wizard
17. m15 -> 17. Labyrinth
18. m16 -> 14. Battle
19. m17 -> 16. Imargen battle [different ending]
20. m18 -> 19. Final battle
So in summary all the Tango tracks are included in the official release and almost without any difference but some endings. There's only one new track on the official one an this is 20. Miracle ~Reunion~; but most important of all is: Tango quality is better thant the available rip!! and it allowed us to hear this masterpiece two months before release so...congratulations Tango: YOU WIN! xD

Just a word of warning about Mr. Dough and the Egg Princess - the score is, as befits a short film, only ten or fifteen minutes in length, and consists of arrangements of Vivaldi's music. Listen to the sound samples on CD Japan. You're not missing much.

I like this thread. In almost any other that would've been answered with "LOL HA HA HA YOU R TEH STUP1D N00B!"

Is it something about good music that attracts good people? :)

Even that jazz album is surprisingly good fun... It really surprises me how pieces like Howl's Moving Castle slip effortlessly into lounge jazz. When I was on holiday in Tokyo a couple of years back, I heard the whole album whilst browsing in Tower Records... and really, really hated it, so be honest. My girlfriend had just about had enough of me storming up and down cursing this "stinking populist butchery" of Hisaishi's great music. Of course, time will put out most fires, and now I find that I have mellowed out quite a bit and rather enjoy this.

Something that few people realise about Hisaishi... even during his most traditionalist orchestral scores, his harmonic language is usually not far away from jazz. Anything that, through re-arrangement, clarifies just how much of a genius the guy actually is, is more than OK by me...

I listened to the 7 tracks of this CD at CDJapan and although it sounds like Vivaldi (and others), it seems it's actually Hisaishi composing in their style (as confirmed by many online reports). It's not at all the type of music I like coming from Hisaishi, so I am disappointed, but track #2 (latter part) isn't so bad. Maybe if I heard it all...

oh yea, keep in mind the Studio Ghibli Concert 2008 version that u have now is just an audio rip from the video of the live concert. I really suggest you to stick with the maxi single version because it's probably studio mastered. A little accordion doesn't hurt right? lol. Otherwise, it's still play by a symphony orchestra and piano by Hisaishi...in fact the arrangement is exactly the same except at some points the accordion plays the theme, which isn't exactly a deal breaker if u ask me.

My favorites:

2. Masahiko Satoh (Masahiko Sato) - Panda! Go, Panda, Grave of the Fireflies

3. Shinichiro Ikebe - Future boy Conan.

4. Michio Mamiya - Grave of the Fireflies, Gauche the Cellist, Little Norse Prince (aka Taiyou no Ouji: Horusu no Daibouken)

5. Naozumi Yamamoto - Animal Treasure Island (but very few people like this)

You can find information about it on animenewsnetwork.com, for example

And if you need more names - just say, I love a dozen or so Japanese composers associated with the Ghibli and Miyazaki)

We made a special day with most Totoro scores last friday in The Soundtrack Zone (http://soundtrackzone.blogspot.com/search/label/Tonari%20no%20Totoro), in case anybody is interested.
I couldn't find the singles and some other stuff since the torrent with all ghibli stuff is dead (both mp3 and flac versions).

Hi, if you are referring to the BBT torrents, they are both very much alive ;)

Well, it appears that the forum posts hash numbers for files. Those numbers are used to identify files in file sharing programs. In Japan, the most common file sharing system is called "Winny" (WinnyHiƒEƒBƒj[j (http://winny.4th.jp/)) (I think it's similar to edonkey). There are also search engines for hash numbers (such as hashdb.com (http://hashdb.com)). So for instance the hash number for Arion Digital Trip 1800 Series (196.7M) is 64d48038dc53c38eb9a960d64eecdff859820089 which you need to enter into Winny. Unfortunately you need to understand Japanese to be able to set-up Winny and open ports correctly.

Although this album it was shared on the request thread before but the shared quality was so humble with so many buzzes and annoying noise. This is why I have decided to get this. So here you go. I am now ,somehow, more optimistic in finding the harmonica album, after all of these old albums were finally on the share.

Hi, does anyone happen to have the complete Birth soundtrack? I did manage to get the suite link and also eight tracks from Youtube (which appear to be taken from the suite itself) but am searching for the full album if possible. I think there was another link to Birth put up on this thread at one point as well, but it didn't appear to work anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

(nodding) That's ok, I understand. :) I think so far that the best bet to finding Birth will be whenever someone is able to share the Windaria/Birth 2 CD set, but for some odd reason I've only seen Disc 1 of it floating around on the web.

I'm almost convinced that the Birth score is sort of a "Holy Grail" for Hisaishi fans. ;)

I don't mean to speak out of place, but is there really no shame in the world?

"The Best Of Cinema Music" is a fund-raising CD. It is of a concert that was mounted to raise money to buy new musical instruments for children who lost theirs (and pretty much everything else) in the March earthquake. If there's one thing that should never, ever be pirated, isn't it this? Would humanity really fund its obsession with getting something for free by taking hope away from children who have nothing; hope that was given to them though genuine kindness and sacrifice?

I weep for my species, this day.

Yes, I agree too. But don't you find it also cynical that these monies will find a better place to be spent, if they were directed to some other places in the world. In other words, the children of Africa are dying because of starvation. So if I was given the choice to denote. I would rather save a soul in Africa than to let a child get back his or her lost instrument. Under the scope of comparison, saving someone instrument is considered to be excessive luxury if the same monies would save a soul that could die because of the lack of food !

What's this based on? The assumption that people who wanted to buy this album, now being able to download it for me, are no longer going to buy it? This is bullshit and the exactly the mindset of the major music industry. Do you know what I find sad? That some people in the filesharing scene are obviously thinking the same way...

Let me just say this: I was going to buy the album, under the assumption that it was good. I was waiting for it to surface somewhere so that I could preview it. I don't buy stuff just for the sake of charity. If an album is just going to collect dust on my shelf, then it doesn't have any purpose for me. Music comes first and foremost. If I support a good cause by buying it, then even better. But I'm not buying it, just because of the good cause.

I do agree that in the world, there are more pressing concerns. This isn't a place for me to state my position on foreign aid scenarios, or the specific reasons why children in Africa continue to starve horribly despite thr constant, intense assistance offered by the world... Suffice to say, that's a bigger topic that doesn't really belong here. Japan produced this album, explicitly to raise money to help the Japanese people who had their lives ripped to pieces by that monstrous earthquake. They are using music to connect with people all over the world, and so feed the resulting donations back into creating the next generation of musicians.

This is a little like the "don't complain about your boss, because he's a trivial problem compared to death, war, famine, etc - get some perspective" argument that people wheel out to divert and inspire guilt. I know that's not the way you meant it and I entirely take your point - but whilst "Japan isn't the only country suffering" and "Losing your musical instrument isn't as bad as losing your life" are both absolutely true statements in themselves, they don't excuse the moral criminality inherent in this situation - which is effectively robbing children of their musical instruments, selling them, and using the money to entertain yourself.

Partially agree.But in the good part, more children can listen this enjoyable music now. In crisis period, are 35-40 dollars are very expensive for a lot of people. But better is buy cd, of course. Thanks for the upload.

I don't quite follow the logic here. $35-40 is a lot of money. Try telling that to the people who lost their homes and almost their lives, and see how kindly they take to you using it as justification to steal from their kids...

What's this based on? The assumption that people who wanted to buy this album, now being able to download it for me, are no longer going to buy it? This is bullshit and the exactly the mindset of the major music industry. Do you know what I find sad? That some people in the filesharing scene are obviously thinking the same way...

I will defend filesharing to the hilt; just do a quick search and you'll see my position. I view this situation as entirely different; if piracy prevents just one sale in this case, it has had a direct and measurable impact upon the life of somebody who has already been through hell and back.

Of course, it's a nonsense to assume that if a pirated album attracts 50,000 downloads, then that's 50,000 copies that won't be sold. Of course, 99% of the downloaders never had any intention of buying in the first place. They were never potential customers.

But this, God, it's not about file sharing, it's not even about the law... It's just not right.

I'm not going to buy this because I do not need all this music again. From my perspective, it serves no purpose - and you're right, it's idiotic to buy it just to support the cause. Give some money to charity to support the cause, and save yourself a space on your CD rack.

I have no wish to offend anybody and will gracefully withdraw from this conversation now; I've said what needed to be said. Peace and love to you all, as always.

I'm not going to buy this because I do not need all this music again.
Again? At least I was under the impression that Hisaishi's live performances were never the same. There was always something new to discover. See e.g. the Ghilbi / Hisaishi in Budokan BD: Use of a huge choir, marching band for Laputa, acoustic/jazzy attempt on Porco Rosso, etc.

tangotreats
09-11-2011, 11:51 PM
Well, yeah... a Hisaishi concert is never dull... but I don't think I can justify spending that much money on something that is effectively re-recordings. I loved the Budokan DVD - and I did buy that - then again, that was something particularly special. If this is a straightforward concert performance, then I'll put money on it being mostly arrangements we've heard before... and better. I believe Let The Bullets Fly has never been released, but apart from that, how many more times to we need the Howl's Moving Castle suite, the Nausicaa suite, the Mononoke suite, etc, etc? If money weren't tight this month, I'd get it just for the sake of completeness, but as it stands, there's nothing really must have about this... It strikes me as a concert that would have been a mesmerising experience if you were able to attend it physically, but otherwise, not particularly unique... :)

LiquidAcid
09-12-2011, 12:23 AM
So far I like what I hear. Yes, the Nausicaa and Mononoke suite is similar to the one from the Budokan concert. But it still gives me shivers. I'll probably pick up two copies, one as present for my father. I think he's going to like it :)

For PC DVD drives you can either patch the firmware or just use a player software that doesn't honor the region code at all. For standalone devices it's mostly 5 minutes of Googling and entering some "secret code" on your remote.

Just to inform you that Hayao Miyazaki is working on part 2 of Porco rosso for release in 2012. As always, Hisaishi will do the soundtrack!
By the way, does anyone know whether the soundtracks for some chinese movies recently composed by Hisaishi are available? According to IMDB, Hisaishi has composed the music for "Haiyang tiantang", "Let the Bullets Fly " and "Rest on Your Shoulder ".
Thanks.

Waldfee: In case you missed it, music from "Let the Bullets Fly" is included on Hisaishi's "Best of Cinema" CD that was posted here on Sept 11. If you like that music, you'll need to also track down Hisaishi's "The Sun Also Rises" as it uses the same theme. Presumably one film is the sequel to the other.

Like some other comments made here, my interest in the "Best of Cinema" CD was also low because it seemed like just another concert of familiar Hisaishi themes. Having listened to it I can say it includes music from a few newer scores, and the old favorites have been re-orchestrated, so it is not repeats. Whether you need another arrangement of Princess Mononoke is another matter. What bothers me most, however, is that much of this music seems quite overblown in that Hisaishi has succumbed to what I call the Carl Orff Syndrome---something affecting quite a few composers----with a loud, overbearing chorus added to the mix a la Orff's "Carmina Burana." The result, to me, is a pompousness that ruins some tunes better left alone. That's my opinion only. Based on what I'm hearing in many other Japanese scores, that "sound" is obviously popular with others.

Miyazaki is not making a sequel to Porco Rosso. He did consider the project but decided against it. Latest News - GhibliWiki (http://www.nausicaa.net/wiki/Latest_News)

As for Hisaishi's use of choir, I have never found it anything but tasteful, but I do know what you mean. It's a sound that's been done to death. Orff did it in 1935 and just about every other composer who has ever lived has done it again since.

I wouldn't consider that Hisaishi has "succumbed" to anything as that implies a negative; his choral writing is absolutely top notch. I wonder how many people realise that Hisaishi's music is consistently of concert hall quality.

Can you elaborate on that?

Aah, I understand.

Ghibli movies tend to get scores by all sorts of different people - Tamiya Terashima for Earthsea, Yuji Nomi for The Cat Returns, Cecile Corbel for Artietty, Satoshi Takebe for From Kokuriko Hill, etc... but Miyazaki hasn't made a film for nearly thirty years that wasn't scored by Hisaishi... and given the colossal popularity of Hisaishi's scores, combined with the fact that he's obviously still at the top of his game (Ni No Kuni, anybody?) I don't think that relationship will change any time soon, if ever.

I'm not looking forward to the time when Miyazaki inevitably retires for good... nor for the possibility of Ghibli going under... but that's another discussion for another thread.

LiquidAcid

And I still don't understand.

Miyazaki was involved with Arietty, he's credited for screenplay. Same goes for ToE (credited for story concept) and TCR (project concept, producer).

What makes you so certain that the next Studio Ghibli movie is going to get a score by Hisaishi, provided that Miyazaki fills any position (production, screenplay, etc.)?

I think what he's trying to tell you is that the next Ghibli films DIRECTED by Miyazaki is going to be scored by Joe Hisaishi,
and this only IF Miyazaki will direct another movie...

He supervised the screenplay for Arriety but did not directed that movie...

Did you get it now? Joe Hisaishi only scored Ghibli films that were entirely made by Miyazaki!

It's true that every Ghibli movie with Miyazaki in the director position was also scored by Hisaishi. But that doesn't make a proof. I was more hoping for tango to provide a link to some announcement about this whole thing. Because I don't see this 100% certainty. I believe it, once something is announced.

Did you get it now? Joe Hisaishi only scored Ghibli films that were entirely made by Miyazaki!
This entirely is incorrect at best. Even with Miyazaki in the director position, Howl story is based on a british novel. That's not what I would call "entirely made by someone". And even though, Hisaishi scored the movie adaption.

tangotreats

OK, clarification time:

Every single film that Miyazaki has directed since 1984 has been scored by Hisaishi. Their collaboration is arguably the most successful director/composer relationship in history, with the exception of Hitchcock and Herrmann. Hisaishi's scores are some of the most well-loved in animation history, domestically and internationally. Miyazaki talks frequently about his love for Hisaishi's scores, and I have no doubt that both men respect each other greatly. Of course, there is no such thing as a certainty in this world (other than death and taxes) so perhaps saying 100% was, in the greatest traditional of anally-retentive attention to detail, inaccurate... but I would say that, in real terms, it's a given.

I say that the next film that Miyazaki directs will receive a Hisaishi score. Miyazaki is frequently involved in one capacity or another in pretty much every film Ghibli makes, but when he is a director, he is generally considered to be making the film and can select the composer. Since, in thirty years of film-making, he has never selected anybody but Hisaishi, I will go out on a limb and bet money that he will for his next film, too.

"Director" is a complicated concept. Sure, somebody else can write the thing, but the director directs. He selects the composer, he discusses the musical arrangements with the composer, etc - he is ultimately in charge of every part of the film. There's a big difference between being a member of staff on a film (as Miyazaki has been with Arietty, Kokurikozaka kara, etc) and having overall control of the film from a creative standpoint.

This entirely is incorrect at best. Even with Miyazaki in the director position, Howl story is based on a british novel. That's not what I would call "entirely made by someone". And even though, Hisaishi scored the movie adaption.

"Entirely made by" is obviously a simplification of the directorial process, but it's not a bad one. Suffice to say, no film is "entirely made by" one person, unless that person writes the story, draws every frame of animation, photographs it, develops the film, scores it, performs the music, and edits it. Film is collaborative but the director is generally recognised as the creator of the film. For Miyazaki, in particular, this is more true since his role is often significantly greater than most others would be in the same role. Howl was Hayao Miyazaki's movie. Earthsea was Goro's. Etcetera.

I don't quite understand how an argument has arisen out of the statement that Joe Hisaishi will score Hayao Miyazaki's next movie, given that he has scored every single one of Miyazaki's movies for three decades and that each and every one of those scores has been phenomenally successful.

Furthermore, Miyazaki has been threatening to retire since Princess Mononoke in 1999. He still hasn't got around to it yet. He has stated that he will not make Porco Rosso 2, but he has not said anything about Ponyo being his last film as director, and has even hinted strongly that the next film he is directing is about to enter pre-production...

Peace and all that stuff, folks... :)

LiquidAcid

I agree that this is very likely, but still I was hoping for something for solid, like an official announcement. Without that, everything is speculation.

The reason why I started this argument, was because of your I would say that it's a 100% certainty statement tango. For me this indicated that you had solid information about this fact, e.g. something that was posted on Nausicaa.net, but which I failed to see.

Re: Universe Within: Special Issue
If I'm not mistaken, all Hisaishi music from this TV series was totally synth. This CD release was particularly "Special" in that it includes an orchestral version of "The Inners" (as well as its synth counterpart). Those fond of Hisaishi's orchestral music might want to get this for that one track alone.

3. 三浦秀美 / Born To Be A Runner (4:40)

12. 大和美恵子 / 心戦場 (5:18)

Thanks for sharing the track listing to "Kono Ai no Monogatari", Waldfee. For those that want to know the actual names and titles, here they are translated:

Simply wonderful, especially the naval battle and the concert suite.

The concert suite was a bit of a surprise; I wonder why they explicitly went out of their way to re-record this with an inferior orchestra when the exact same suite already received a flawless reading with the London Symphony Orchestra on Melodyphony? Maybe they had a bit of spare time left at the end of the session and thought "Ah, what the hell!"

Still... BY GOD, JOE HISAISHI IS MAGNIFICENT. Every single damn time he puts pencil to paper, magical things happen. Scoring in general may have gone to the dogs in the West - and it may be considerably more healthy in Japan - but Hisaishi is just a cut above. Is there anybody else as good as him? I agree he is wonderful! There are a few really good Japanese composers and French ones too that steal the thunder from current American composers. It is good to get some new perspectives in music. But for American - have you heard John Williams' new War Horse? Beautiful stuff!

Yes, his name is John Williams and he's better. Don't take this the wrong way though, i still think JH is a tremendous composer of film music, which is why JH is second to JW on my list of best film composers. For the longest time, Hisaishi's been #1 on my list, but it wasn't until after composing several orchestral pieces myself that i realized how much more complex JW's music was compared to JH's, which was why i swapped their rankings. But among Japanese composers? He's hands down #1. Like I've said before, he's the John Williams of Japan.

Like I've said before, he's the John Williams of Japan.

You know it's curious you said that, because in a interview Hisaishi was asked of his opinion about the critics that call him as the John Williams of the Orient, and he refused that idea, saying that his own music approach are more along the lines of European composers such as Nino Rota.

The interview was made for a polish site. Here is the whole interview translated into English: Google Translate (http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=pl&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fmuzykafilmowa.pl%2Fartykuly%2Fhisai shi.htm)

i meant that in terms of popularity, fame, and success. Definitely not his composing style. I agree 100% with what he said about himself being similar to Nino Rota and also about writing simple melodies. That was a fascinating interview, I wish there were more. thanks.

I tend to exclude John Williams from this kind of comparison because I think it's fairly obvious that nobody, anywhere works at that level. Although I suspect that Williams is the superior musician, I felt a pang of annoyance by your statement; they are two very different composers, both working at outrageously high standards. Who's to say which one is better? Is Williams better because he does more notes-per-minute, or because he has such a God-like grasp of symphonic structure? Or is Hisaishi better because he does more with less?

Is it even important, in the great scheme of things? There's so much crap out there, and so much sameyness - I am more than content to state that they are both excellent composers; and that if I ever manage to be just 1% as good as they are, I will have done a magnificent thing.

Complexity isn't everything and definitely shouldn't be the criteria by which musical worth is judged. It's easy for a composer to hide inside technical complexity. Learning the symphonic acrobatics is easy enough, but without the human factor ultimately it's just hundreds of expertly chosen notes on a sheet of manuscript paper.

Just lately I have been finding John Williams technically as superlative as ever, but sorely lacking in raw emotional impact. That is where Hisaishi excels. Comparatively simple, but expertly poised expressions of feeling.

And the only way Hisaishi is the Japanese Williams is in terms of popularity, universal appeal, versatility, and consistent high standards. Compositionally, they are absolutely nowhere near even cursory similarity.

i meant that in terms of popularity, fame, and success. Definitely not his composing style. I agree 100% with what he said about himself being similar to Nino Rota and also about writing simple melodies. That was a fascinating interview, I wish there were more. thanks.

pretty much what i said in the later post.

At the end of the day, music is too subjective. There's no real objective way too look at it.

“5th Dimension”とは、直訳すれば“第5の次元”のような意味だが、この久石譲(本名/藤澤守)の新曲が聴きもの。「運命」のリズム素材を駆使した、ちょっとオネゲル風のミニマル音楽である。本 篇の二つの交響曲も、生真面目なほど正攻法で好感度高い演奏である。

Enigma0066, THANKS! I've been very interested in Joe's performances of the music by those classical composers. Something else, perhaps? It's volume 4, after all ;).

Btw., Can anyone tell me whether signatures has been forbidden or I just can't find the place to paste the URL?

if your sig is a picture, just upload it on photobucket, tinypics, imgur or any such service of your preference, then use the image tags in the signature field. mine looks like this :

"And exactly how many times did he fall out the window ?"

Does anybody else uses last.fm here? I wonder how to tag this "JOE HISAISHI CLASSICS 4"... It blows my mind that he put down his original name on the cover :/.

EDIT: Of course it should be tagged as Joe Hisaishi, what I realized a while after I posted this message. My bad.
