Megadeth: Megadeth is an American thrash metal band led by founder, frontman and songwriter Dave Mustaine. Formed in 1983 following Mustaine's departure from Metallica, the band has since released eleven studio albums, six live albums, two EPs, and two compilations.
vs
Lou Reed: Lou Reed, born Lewis Allen Reed, March 2, 1942, is an American rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. Reed first found prominence as the guitarist and principal singer-songwriter of The Velvet Underground (1965-1973). The band gained no notice during its life, but in hindsight became one of the most influential of their era. As the Velvets’ principal songwriter, Reed wrote about subjects of personal experience that rarely had been examined in rock and roll, including sadism and masochism ("Venus in Furs"), transvestites ("Sister Ray"), drug culture ("Heroin", and "I'm Waiting for the Man"), and transsexuals undergoing lobotomies ("Lady Godiva's Operation"). As a guitarist, he was a pioneer in the use of distortion, volume-driven feedback, and nonstandard tunings.

King Crimson: King Crimson are a musical group founded by guitarist Robert Fripp and drummer Michael Giles in 1969. King Crimson's style has typically been categorised as progressive rock, although it incorporates diverse influences ranging from jazz, classical and experimental music to psychedelic, New Wave, heavy metal, gamelan and folk music. King Crimson has garnered little radio or music video airplay, but there is a cult following. Their debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King, is widely regarded as a landmark in progressive rock. Their later excursions into even more unconventional territory have been influential on many contemporary musical artists.

Don't feel bad, both of mine that have been up for voting are out already.
The thing about metal is it's so diverse. I really love a lot of metal, but can't listen to tons of other things in the genre as well. I like it when the lyrics are relatable and it's not this overblown dramatic and theatrical thing.
I do feel like maybe some people here are just voting against the metal bands because it's the silly little genre that's cool to dismiss rather than having given any of it a chance. For such a diverse genre, as I stated, it really has a lot of negative connotations, as if every single band is going to be all about fist pumping and leather or viking-sword/goblin type lyrics or pure satanism and yadda yadda. Anyway though - at least I've personally listened to the bands I've voted against.
Then there's the people that vote against whatever's popular because OH GOD IT'S TERRIBLE TO LIKE WHAT OTHERS LIKE.
In general, it seems there's always some really nasty negative vibe people get against many types of music for essentially no good reason. People have to HATE things. There can't be simple disinterest. I can't really speak for everyone though.
Shoden
11-20-2007, 11:56 PM
That's a good point.
there's varieties in metal as much as any genre depending on the area in which you're listening to, I'm an avid fan of the genre but there are areas in which I avoid because of preference. I prefer faster paced songs but not super 100MPH rifs with growling and screaming, I like clean vocals against a steady rif that diverse in pitch freely. As well as that I'm into stories told in the lyrics, concept albums really do chain me to a wall. songs based on literature and movies are good in my tastes.
The musical styles can be incredible as well as utter shite. it comes down to personal taste in the end but the treatment of the bands in the basic genre of it has surprised me, some weren't even metal and still received similar treatment which again comes to the point of people voting against the popular bands for the sake of voting against a popular band.
I'm getting to into this but it has indeed surprised me, I expected there to be several more fans of the genre here and there as well as honest voters which I can't say don't exist.
it's like a massive wtf question comes into play when the underdog massacres an insanely popular band. I know it comes down to preference but voting for the sake of making sure a popular candidate doesn't win is low, I just hope it isn't actually happening.
Rapture
11-21-2007, 12:04 AM
That certainly isn't happening with me. I'm just not a very big fan of metal and those bands who have been against "metal" bands I happen to have preferred.
It is perhaps a bit silly not liking bands because they're popular but, I can sort of see where it's coming from. I mean lately the Flaming Lips have had songs on three different adverts and they're becoming more well known and it's irritating me somewhat because one of the good things about them was their.. well they're not underground by any means, but they had a cosy fanbase.
I tend to not like bands that are popular because said bands, I generally dislike anyway. I could say I hate a lot of bands though. For example, I generally hate Oasis, I generally hate Ian Brown etc.
Seriously, the British charts are awful. It makes me sad to think this is what constitutes "good" music. A hell of a lot of bands or singer/"songwriters" in the UK charts dont' deserve hardly any of the money they get.

Agreed, I'd definitely take prog over thrash, I find thrash immensely boring for the most part, other than maybe a handful of bands. And I find Jon Schaffer's guitar playing greatly repetitive and boring as well, but I just had to go with Iced Earth because I loved Matt Barlow's vocals during the years he was involved. The Velvet Underground: The Velvet Underground was an American rock band first active from 1965 to 1970 (& 1970 to 1973 in a different incarnation). Its best-known members were New Yorker Lou Reed and Welshman John Cale. Although never commercially successful whilst together, the Velvet Underground are often cited by critics as one of the most important and influential groups of their era. A famous remark, often attributed to British musician Brian Eno, is that while only a few thousand people bought the first Velvet Underground record upon its release, almost every single one of them was inspired to start a band. Their sound influenced many later musicians in many genres, including experimental, post-punk, new wave, and gothic rock.
vs
Super Furry Animals: Super Furry Animals (also known as "SFA", the "Furries" and the "Super Furries") are a Welsh rock band, with leanings towards psychedelic rock and electronic experimentation. The band formed in Cardiff after being in various other Welsh bands and techno outfits in the area, among them Ffa Coffi Pawb. Gruff Rhys, Dafydd Ieuan and Guto Pryce had been together since the early 1990s and had toured the north coast of France as a techno group.

30 Seconds to Mars: 30 Seconds to Mars (or Thirty Seconds to Mars) is an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California, featuring actor Jared Leto as the lead vocalist. Created in 1998 by Jared Leto and his brother, Shannon, 30 Seconds to Mars began as a small family project. Things began to speed up quickly, and Matt Wachter later joined the band as bassist and keyboard player. After working with small revolving door of guitarists (as the band's first two guitarists, Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler, left the band due to issues primarily related to touring), the three auditioned Tomo Miličević to round out the band's roster.
vs
Of Montreal: Of Montreal is an American indie pop band formed in Athens, Georgia, fronted by Kevin Barnes. It was among the second wave of groups to emerge from The Elephant 6 Recording Company. The band was created by Kevin Barnes and named after a failed romance with a woman from Montreal, though the story changes in various interviews. Barnes was the only member of the "group" prior to his relocation to Athens, Georgia. There, he met Derek Almstead, later of the Circulatory System, M Coast, Elf Power etc., and Bryan Poole, who also performs as The Late B.P. Helium. Together, they recorded their first album, Cherry Peel, as well as The Bird Who Ate the Rabbit's Flower and The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy.
