(Denny, Tom Waits IS kinda like Nick Cave, although Tom is more jazzy and has a grittier voice, but they share somewhat same sorta melodies and dark vocals in songs. I'd suggest the album Orphans, 'cause, wonderful covers in that record, although I'm no Tom Waits expert, just mentioning~)

lol double post. anyway, here's round 1, we've got 128 bands/artists to get through.

Placebo:

Placebo are an alternative rock band consisting of Brian Molko (vocals, guitar) and Stefan Olsdal (bass). The band was founded when former Luxembourg schoolmates Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal - who never actually spoke to each other - met by accident at South Kensington tube station in 1994. Molko invited Olsdal to one of his gigs and Olsdal was impressed by Molko's vocals so they agreed on forming a band. The singles "Nancy Boy", from Placebo (1996), and "Pure Morning", from Without You I'm Nothing (1998), were the peak of their British success, both charting in the top ten.

vs

Ben Folds:

Benjamin Scott Folds (born September 12, 1966, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina) is an American singer-songwriter. He is widely known for his prowess as a pianist. Folds' musical career started to get off the ground in the late '80s, as bassist for band Majosha, after playing bass and piano at Pinehurst, in a group known as the "Caroliners" with cohort Millard Powell in 1985-1987; for the Calayer and after working as but he is best known for his later work as the frontman and pianist of Ben Folds Five and as a solo artist. As of fall 2006, Ben Folds has released five solo LPs. His first album, Fear of Pop: Volume 1, an album of spoken word and instrumental compositions, was recorded and released while Ben Folds Five was still together.

Match 2:

Porcupine Tree: Porcupine Tree is an English progressive rock band formed in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England by Steven Wilson. Their music is a combination of rock, psychedelia, and more recently metal. The main songwriter and founder of the band, Steven Wilson, once commented: "I like so many different types of things, and they all go into the melting pot, if you like, that produces the music of Porcupine Tree." Porcupine Tree's latest studio album, Fear of a Blank Planet, was released on April 16, 2007 in the UK and Europe, April 24 in the US and May 1 in Canada, featuring Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson and King Crimson's Robert Fripp.

vs

Nine Inch Nails: Nine Inch Nails (abbreviated as NIN) is an industrial rock band, founded in 1988 by Trent Reznor in Cleveland, Ohio. As its main producer, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Reznor is the only official member of Nine Inch Nails and remains solely responsible for its musical direction. NIN's music straddles a wide range of genres, while retaining a characteristically intense sound using electronic instruments and processing. After recording a new album, Reznor usually assembles a live band to perform with him; this live component is a separate entity from Nine Inch Nails in the recording studio. On stage, NIN often employs spectacular visual elements to accompany its performances, which frequently culminate with the band destroying musical instruments.

This is an extremely tough choice for me, as I really like both bands, each having produced outstanding albums this year and I listen to them both frequently. I'll go for Porcupine Tree, barely.

Her most recent album, Volta, was released worldwide on May 8, 2007.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor: Godspeed You! Black Emperor (formerly punctuated Godspeed You Black Emperor!) is an avant-garde Canadian post-rock band based in Montreal, Quebec. Formed in 1994, the ensemble has been quite influential in its genre, with bands from as far as Hong Kong and Singapore citing them as influences in their musical work. Working on a near orchestral scale, the nine-piece group has been known to create wide dynamic ranges, unique use of instrumentation and sounds, large songs that are composed almost classically with multiple movements within themselves, and engrossing use of art and visuals in both their album packaging and live performances. They are currently on an indefinite hiatus, as members of the band are busy with many other projects; they have, however, made it clear that they have not disbanded.

Opeth: Opeth is a band from Sweden formed in 1990 that is fronted by songwriter Mikael kerfeldt. Rooted in Scandinavian death metal, Opeth later delved deep into experimentation, having since incorporated influences from jazz, progressive rock, blues, and folk, crossing genre borders to create a unique blend of musical stylesmost successfully with their ground-breaking Blackwater Park (2001), and their latest release Ghost Reveries (2005). Since signing their first record-deal in 1994, the band has released eight albums, a DVD, and a box-set, but merely three singles. A notable exception in their catalog is Damnation (2003), a pure progressive rock record.

vs

L7: L7 was a band from Los Angeles that was active from 1985 to 2000. Due to their sound and image, they are often associated with the grunge movement of the late 1980s and early 1990s. L7 was formed by Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner on shared electric guitar and shared vocals. A year previous, the then-fifteen year old Gardner had performed backing vocals on the Black Flag song "Slip It In". The punk rock duo were soon joined by Jennifer Finch on bass guitar and Roy Koutsky on drum kit.

Tool: Tool is an American rock band, formed in 1990 in Los Angeles, California. The band consists of drummer Danny Carey, bassist Justin Chancellor, guitarist Adam Jones, and vocalist Maynard James Keenan. Due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and relatively long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transgressing act and part of progressive and art rock.

The Smashing Pumpkins: he Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band that formed in Chicago in 1988. While the group has gone through several lineup changes, The Smashing Pumpkins consisted of Billy Corgan (vocals/guitar), James Iha (guitar/vocals), D'arcy Wretzky (bass/vocals), and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums/percussion) for most of the band's recording career. The Smashing Pumpkins broke into the musical mainstream with their second album, 1993's Siamese Dream. Match 7:

The Stooges: The Stooges are an American rock band that was first active from 1967 to 1974, and then reformed in 2003. The Stooges sold few records in their original existence and often performed for indifferent or hostile audiences. Nevertheless, The Stooges are often regarded as hugely influential in both the heavy metal and punk rock genres. Singer Iggy Pop and his wild onstage antics were often the main focus of attention.

vs

the Dead Kennedys: The Dead Kennedys are a hardcore punk band from San Francisco, California. During the 1980s, the band gained a large underground following in the international punk music scene. Their music mixed the more experimental elements of English 1970s punk with the raw energy of the 1980s American hardcore punk scene. The Kennedys' songs mix the deliberately shocking lyrics of punk with a humorous, acerbic, satirical, and sarcastic left-wing commentary on current social and political issues. At the same time, some of their songs also mocked the hypocritical stances of some liberal elites. Many of the band's songs criticize the right-wing ideologies of the religious right and the Ronald Reagan administration, along with many far-left personalities and ideas.

That meant that their hardcore fanbase would have to buy the album twice to get everything.

Well unless they manage themselves I'm sure they weren't wholly responsible for that

Doesn't sound any worse than popular movies being released on DVD, only to be updated later with an even better version after tons of people have already bought the lesser one, or albums getting re-released with better remixes and bonus tracks and all, but oh well

If you disagree that's cool by me - let's not derail the thread with it though!
