Can anyone tell me what's the best DPI to scan cd covers in? Can't quite get them sharp and clear enough. Thanks!

With 300 ppi you get pictures of the covers (trimmed) that are 1400 pixels high, a very common size and good enough for most of us; with 600 ppi, the height would double, so, more or less 2800 pixels, and a much bigger file size. Check also the other settings and the parameters of the image format: if you export to jpg, the maximum quality is usually a waste for this, and setting it around 70-80 % of the maximum should give the same visual quality in smaller files (though the numbers don't have the same meaning in all programs).

And, as recommended by scoreman44, "Please be keen and descreen": do some tests activating the "Descreen" option to soften the Moir� patterns (http://www.scantips.com/basics6b.html).

Of course it was a play off of when we use to rent video movies and it said, "Please be kind, Rewind" But descreening is so important when doing your own scans. If you are going to share then make it the best quality you can. Unless it's a ploy to make you get the CD.

Yes, that's the word you used. And it sounded so well that I thought "Obviously he belongs to some obscure 1337 scanning group".

It would be good to have always perfect images but it is natural that there are many scans like that if the user is not aware of this issue. On the other hand, the scanner just captured the actual image; it's not really a failure on the user's side that the distribution of ink dots (the screens) was designed to look good on paper instead of in computer displays, whose pixel density is besides much lower than the one used to print and to scan.

I often run a "Descreen" plugin for GIMP on the front covers only (it would take too much time to find the best balance for every image), and when it doesn't work, the "Selective gaussian blur" filter helps to soften further those textures while maintaining the sharpness in the edged areas. Once the front is fairly decent, I accept more easily that the rest are worse -within certain limits- because I'm mostly interested in text information. But there are filters for Photoshop and surely other options that can be useful to deal with that. Maybe someone can suggest some names.

However, if I was granted a wish, I would choose that people simply cleaned their scanners more often (say, once every four months) because removing stains, specks and fluffs coming from some dirty glasses is a royal pain with many sets. Or even better: that Amazon published complete scans as good as the HQ fronts they make available now. :)
