I am watching Space:1999 Year One, and enjoying it. For a series that is over 40 years old, it holds up real good. The FX is still better than CGI today, to me that is.

Space: 1999 was THE show for me, when no new TOS was shown in Germany after its initial run of 39 episodes (1972-74). The first year had some great performances by Martin Landau and Barry Morse, great guest stars (Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing), some quite good stories with mystical elements (e.g. "The Black Sun", "Collision Course", where many big questions of humanity were asked, like "What's our purpose", "What's our destiny", "Is there a greater Being in the Universe looking after us", etc), great SFX (real models, no CGI!), and terrific music (Barry Gray). Year 2 was kind of a let-down, though, in many respects: stories left their edge, characters changed, very bad music (Barry Gray had left the show), etc.

I agree with you completely. I only saw a couple of episodes of Year One when it came out, but it impressed me. I bought the RCA LP of the soundtrack, which I still have. Barry Gray's music helped the action, a lot. Barry Morse was my favorite on the series.

I saw more episodes of Year Two in 1977, I liked them, still had the great FX, but not a fan of the music by Derek Wadsworth. My favorite Wadsworth music was from The Day After Tomorrow:Into Infinity pilot/NBC Special.

So did I! That was the very first release back then, when Compact discs still were science fiction. I played that one countless times, it was great to hear that dramatic music for Breakaway, always gave me goosebumps! That LP is still part of my vinyl collection.

Trivia alert. Nick Tate from 1999 also appears in an episode of TNG and an episode of DS9.

I thought most of Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's catalogue was pretty good stuff. 'Joe 90' and 'Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons' were a couple of my faves along with 'Space 1999'.

All ST series have their moments, except TOS...it is perfect, like Spock's Brain.:)

As for the Anderson's series, from Fireball XL5 to Captain Scarlet I really like. I have yet to see Supercar. Captain Scarlet was my first set I bought and it was a good one to start with. I though seeing the strings would be a turn off, and I was wrong. Once you get into the story, you forget the strings. That is the power of Gerry Anderson.

theone2000
03-25-2015, 11:11 PM
Thunderbirds also have string issues, but the acting is less wooden than what's churned out in some new 'blockbuster' films.

Regarding Voyager, I'll vouch for it. It has some great episodes. I'd say the same for DS9 if anyone asks.

Tonight's report on TNG remastered: It was the "Q Who" episode where the Enterprise is forced to confront the Borg for the first time. I'm sure you all know the scene where the cube starts to repair itself and it looks like a reverse play of a clip of some plastic model kit parts being melted with a small torch or heat gun. Unfortunately, it looks the same in the new version. Doh! But the rest of the Borg cube shots look clean and more realistic.

AZSneed
03-25-2015, 11:36 PM
Thunderbirds to me should have been half hour shows, some episodes you could tell was trying to fill the hour and it slowed it down. I agree about your view on the acting is less wooden than what's churned out in some new 'blockbuster' films.

As for changing the FX in TNG, I say leave it. I like some of the TOS "replacement" FX, but some did not need it. So the same might go for TNG.

As I said, Voyager is one series I have not seen much of, but I liked what I did see. DS9 like Enterprise, has it's good and not so. But, both ended lousy for me.

Because of Obama? No, it has been going on for decades, the slow chipping away of our freedoms and values, and the only response has been some protest, and they ain't worked. As for Troops around the U.S. right now training to put civilians in Camps and going door to door taking weapons from the people, it ain't going to happen, and if by a slim chance it does, another Civil War will come. Anyway we lost control of the Country when we gave Government too much power in the guise of PROTECTING OUR FREEDOMS long ago. Well, on a happy note I am 1/2 through season 3 of voyager. Still not impressed but there are some good episodes, not looking at it as pure star trek only sifi. Picked up season 4 so I am hoping for better episodes to come. Part of Voyagers problem is some of the episodes seem to be similar to TNG. As far as what is going on with our Government - it is too big and powerful. Things are swinging too far to the left which seems not to tolerate any view but their own. They use to say to us be tolerate of opposing views now they say get in line and shut up. Sad.

I have been watching a lot of Star Trek TOS and DS9 lately I am just a couple episodes away from finishing TOS season 2 and this season rocks way more than season 1. I am about half way through season 5 of DS9 and really enjoying that too, Trials and Tribbleations was awesome, so much fun to watch. I love the TNG movie uniforms on DS9 Dax looks so good in hers wow. Captain Sisko seems like a really cool guy and I like that he is a baseball fan and I love how Jake isn't annoying like the wonder kid Wesley Crusher. I can't wait to see how DS9 progresses and I love how not every episode has a happy ending like the one where O'Brien was given the memories of being imprisoned for I think 20 years that was a good ep. I love DS9.

Nitrosis, is this the remastered TOS? Season 2 is the strongest, but, all three have their gems. DS9, is a very good series, which I like a lot. Trials and Tribbleations my all time favorite DS9. When I saw it on TV for the first time, I was grinning the whole episode. I'm glad you are enjoying the series, and it is hard to believe that September 8th of next year that TOS will be 50 years old. I was 8 years old fixing to turn 9 when it debuted.

AZSneed, I was about 10 when TOS 1st came out, I really got into it when I watched the reruns as a teenager.
Nitrosis, I agree about Dax, she sure looked good in that uniform. For the last 10 years or so I watch DS9, TNG and BAB5 once a year-have all 3 on DVD. I recently picked up Star Trek Enterprise and watch it-not bad and now working on season 3 of Voyager which I also just picked up. Didn't see much of either when they came out so they both are new to me.

theone2000, it's like going through a time warp or like suffering from jet lag. It was over to quick-took me about a month and 1/2 watching 3-4 episodes a night. My deepest condolences to you for the loss of all the loved ones from your family, I can, partially at least, feel how that must be for you: my aunt died earlier this year, she was in her mid-seventies, and her husband followed her just 3 months later. Tonight's episode of TOS was Spock's Brain. I think that's the first episode of season 3. "A child could do it." always cracks me up.

Yeah, they had to 'overhaul' it as HD would have magnified all the flaws in the FX. After all, they still want to cash in on the global syndication. :)

Seasons 4 and 5. What a frigging shame. That show was drowned in a bucket of water before it matured. Bastards.

theone2000
07-25-2015, 06:05 PM
I've heard that too. But I always thought the difficulty worked both ways - maybe he was being difficult in resisting interference in the show. In the end they should've cut him some slack. And I'll wager they were sorry decades later when global syndication continued and continued. It's an old discussion and I suppose the fans will never know exactly what went on. The show needs a new Gene with the same positive outlook to go forward.

Yes, that's true, but season three had its highlights. Coincidently, right now I'm watching "The Empath", which is a nice character study about Kirk, Spock and McCoy and shows the beautiful chemistry and friendship between the "big three". Also, it has a great female guest star with Kathrin Hays, who played "Gem", communicating all kinds of emotion without speaking a word (playing a mute alien).) Rounding up this episode was a terrific and most emotional score by George Duning.

Yes, I vividly do remember the BBC ban of four episodes in your country, back in the early eighties. See, I'm from Germany, and during the first run of trek in Germany (1972-74), we only got exactly 39 episodes, the remaining 39 episodes were shown much later on a private channel in the late 80ies (on SAT1). So, as a huge trek fan from the beginning, in the early 80ies I was desperately looking for the missing episodes (which at least I was familiar with through the James Blish novelizations, which I imported from the U.K. back then). Well, when the first trek videos on VHS were released in the U.K., some of the first were those four banned episodes (which, of course, were in great demand in the U.K., obviously), so I thought, why not start with them (the banned episodes were also part of the yet unknown 39 episodes in Germany). The four episodes were "The Empath", "Plato's Stepchildren", Whom Gods Destroy", and "Miri", which, I believe, all got a PG15 rating on VHS. (PG = Parental Guiding, for those unfamiliar with the British rating system.) Later, when the complete run of trek TOS was released on VHS in the U.K., I completed my collection, of course (always preferred the U.S. original version).

The reason for the ban? Dunno, but probably the torture scenes in "Empath", the brutal and senseless murder of Marta in "Whom Gods Destroy", the disturbing scenery on Miri's planet, where kids were left on their own and where some of them had to go through a horrific metamorphosis, and the humiliating torture scenes in Plato's Stepchildren". The German tv channel ZDF probably had the same reservations in 1972, when they saw these episodes, so they sorted them out when they had to decide which 39 episodes they were to show in their first run.

A real ban, by the way, happened in Germany later on, when SAT1 was preparing to give the remaing episodes their first run: they banned "Patterns of Force", which apparently made them uncomfortable with its ridiculous and over-the-top portrayal of a planet run by a nazi leadership. A few years later, "Patterns" was released exclusively on VHS, before SAT1, finally, decided to cancel the ban and included it in its broadcast schedule.

Commercial free it was in Germany too, but only in 1972/74 on ZDF, but the downside were horrible cuts, to meet the 45 min. time slot (Saturday 6.15 a.m., right before the 7.00 a.m. news), meaning cuts of roughly 5 min.! The BBC also had their cuts. I know that because in the late 80ies, I was able to record the BBC edits on the British channel BFBS, which was located in my town when the British army still was stationed in Western Germany, but I was happy enough to get the shows at all. I managed to record all 75 episodes that way (minus the four banned episodes, of course!). I was in trek haven in those years! When I got my collection of the uncut U.S. VHS version, the missing scenes were true revelations to me, even if in most cases I knew those missing scenes through comparing the English version with the (also cut) German version, which in many cases had different cuts, plus adding the informations from the Blish novelizations. True detective work I did back then, and I had a blast doing it! I'm missing those days...

theone2000
07-29-2015, 11:56 PM
I certainly had no inkling as to what happened in your country. How odd to get just half a series! It kind of reminds me of A Clockwork Orange being banned here, but available in France.

Patterns of Force had the classic line from Spock to Kirk "You make a very convincing Nazi." Kirk's expression in response is priceless.

I'm not so sure the episodes were cut as such. You may well be correct in that some scenes were cut, however I don't recall any. The shows actually run for approximately 50 mins in America using the NTSC broadcast system running at 30/60 frames per second. The method of encoding means that the 24 frames per second original film has duplicate fields/frames inserted into it to make it 30/60fps, but the duration remains the same. In Europe using the PAL broadcast system running at 25/50fps, the same 24fps film is simply broadcast at 25/50fps leading to a decrease in overall duration of 4%, meaning a 50 minute show ran for 48 minutes. It's a simple formula actually, PAL will lose 4mins per every 100mins of regular 24fps film. That's why actors sound different when you watch on the counterpart system - the pitch is altered with PAL broadcasts.

Also, I'm watching TOS and TNG on tv currently, and I've noticed that the fades and pauses in episodes have been cut and brutal cross-fades put in their place. I've also noticed cuts from TOS, probably to squeeze in the 15 minutes of commercials during the hour.

I guess I was lucky growing up in the USA and was able to see all the TOS episodes when they 1st came out. When I lived in German back in the mid to late 70s I thought the Germans had more free TV with all the nudity I saw compared to the USA. I would even watch the soap opera shows to try and learn German and see plenty of nudity that would have never been allowed in the USA.

Yes, I do remember those programs in the 70ies, I was 10 in 1971, and when I got my first own tv set in 1976, I was able to watch whatever I wanted: Star Trek, Space:1999, and... well, yes, German Nudity, wherever I could find it. Hey, I had to educate myself, okay?

Got in from work this evening, caught the last half hour of The New Adventures of Wonder Woman ("Yeah, baby! Yeah"). Rene Auberjonois was some kind of burglar at the Space Questicon where fans of sci-fi movies like Star Wars and Logan's Run were dressing up as characters from those shows. But the one disturbing thing I saw, is a guy getting into the Robbie the Robot suit. Yes, some guy was getting kitted out in Robbie the Robot. It's not a robot at all. Bummer.

Hey, it's Rene in his disco shirt. But where's the medallion, Rene?...

I watched a couple of films over the weekend where TOS was cameo'd. Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey and Tropic Thunder both showed clips from the episode where Kirk is pitched against the Gorn. There are plenty of parodies out there like the NBC one on SNL, and Futurama, but I'm sure I've seen other movies that feature genuine clips from TOS however I haven't catalogued them before. Does anybody else know of any movies that have featured TOS cameos. (Cameo for lack of a better word).

The remastered special editions of TOS have had a better treatment compared to TNG, IMO. TNG didn't receive that much attention where I believe it should have. Currently watching DS9. In fact tonight's episode is about to kick off in 35 minutes. There's no remastering there, which is a shame. It'd be nice to at least get a clear picture on the screen.

In fact tonight's episode is about to kick off in 35 minutes. There's no remastering there, which is a shame. It'd be nice to at least get a clear picture on the screen.

The difference was, in the case of TOS, they re-did the special effects from scratch (while simultaniously honoring the visual esthetics and style of the special effects people from the TOS series, only this time, making them in digital high-res instead of analogue photographic effects, and even adding several effects or parts of them, for example by making new background matte "paintings" bigger than before, adding digital moving people or, for example, moving trains into the background, or sometimes even creating completely new visual effects as in the case of "Amok Time" with the panoramic view of the entrance scene to the combat arena, or adding new ships where none were seen before), whereas in the case of TNG, they mostly took the pre-existing raw material of the visual effects and enhanced them digitally to make them HD ready, like they did with the cleaned and remastered life action scenes. Originally, when broadcast in the 80ies, the original video effects were transferred just to simple video, and that's the reason why those, along with the life action material, always looked so awfully washed-out all those years.

For TOS, the new digital effects produced many spectacular views, without looking too modern, thus making them look as "sixties" as possible, and mostly, I like them a lot. They also kept the tranquil movements of the ships as known from the original, which was a wise choice. A Star Wars approch would have destroyed the classic trek style, in my opinion.

Amok Time was good. First time I saw the scene I was genuinely pleased. Although personally I found the Enterprise to be a bit of a weak link in the whole business. It could've done with just that bit more attention.

The Star Wars approach would've been something to behold! Funny looking creatures moving across the screen which were never there before. Added spacecraft traffic outside the windows. Some funky aliens doing a song and dance. Erm, forget that. Bad idea. :)

Have to agree with the Enterprise digitalization being lacking something, it's somehow too clean and missing some "personality", for lack of a better word. If I recall correctly, the digital effects team had a very tight schedule and had to experiment a little bit at the beginning (they didn't go by the original production numbers, always switching between all 3 seasons, back and forth), that's the reason the quality of the digital effects is always changing, if you watch the show by production number (Cage, Where No Man, Corbomite Maneuver, and so on...).

With the Star Wars approach, I was merely thinking about the movements of the ships, which wouldn't have worked for classic trek. The majestic musical cues alone would have excluded Star Wars esthetics for those flyby scenes, they wouldn't have been compatible for that.

(At time of writing) it's only hours away...

I remember watching BTTF2 and seeing great numbers of Discs in various sizes in rubbish bins. That part of the vision of the future never really came about. Today there's a great deal of material to download, but there is no mad rush to trash DVDs and CDs. In fact they form collections. There's even been a vinyl revival. Who'd have thunk?

I watched some of BTTF, and just could not get into it, except for seeing ZZ Top.

I got Jurassic World on DVD today, and I am still excited about the movie, and I am a fan of, now all 4 movies. Besides, I have always been a fan of Dinosaurs.

Those old rockers. Frank Beard, the guy who doesn't have a beard. :)

BTTF2, when the future is skewed (thanks to Biff) kicked off with Sammy Hagar's "I can't drive 55". That was a good use of that song - it fit well with the scene.
