adding to what mandi said about race/etc just being an aspect of a character and not what defines them: marvel has a HUGE selection of characters that have been around for years, and lots of them are loved, and certainly aren't defined by the thing that doesn't make them WASPs.
Why the hell would everyone be Janet Van Dyne? Is it because of that Skrull thing and everyone who's a Skrull turned into Wasp at the same time?
I'll need to use Star Trek for this next one.....
When you look at the original series it's multi culture cast is extremely tokenist. You've got the cowboy hero, the southern doctor, & the serious alien but the 3 of them are white American men while the rest are somewhat caricatures of foreign cultures who didn't get to do all that much or receive all that much development. Uhura was in her mid 50s and she still didn't speak a word of Klingon for christ sakes and these are the people they were at war with the most.
But for the time it was revolutionary. There was a Japanese guy who wasnt a villain or a comedic character but a professional who helped drive the ship, the cold war was still a deep threat so having a Russian on as part of the crew humanized the enemies of the country, and to have a black women working in a professional environment where she wasnt a maid or mammy character was huge back then.
Next Generation basically took TOS and modernized while expanding upon it.
Deep Space Nine took the series mythos to a whole nother level. Things werent so black and white as everything being greyer and with this setting the characters also became much more complex.
So far so good. The story lines themselves have matured, the female characters got progressively stronger, the black characters are fleshed out enough that even if they did have stereotypical aspects like playing sports or the proud warrior race guy being played by a black guy it didnt really matter.
Heres the thin though.
While one of the main themes about Star Trek is that diversity and acceptance should and is a part of the future its still pretty damn imperialistic. The story arcs of the half breeds are about accepting all aspects of yourself but untimely its about those characters becoming more human or rather more acceptably normal than it is about finding balance. Spock should be a little more human. Worf should just chill with the whole Klingon thing and accept he was brought up in a human culture and that hell always be between 2 worlds, 7 of 9 should start acting more human if she wants to ever be happy with herself (God why did they ship(starship that is, wakka, wakka!) her with Chakotay with 3 episodes left? She should have been paired with the Dr.), B'Elanna Torres is the basic hot blooded Latina whos tamed by the all American white boy.
Remember that episode about a unisexual race where gender is outlawed and it was a metaphor for homos? Well is was a great episode but because all the actors who played members of that race were girls it came off as Commander Riker conquers the Space Dykes. (Which I find hilarious but thats beside the point.)
Then theres the fact that the writers and producers keep nixing any attempt for a regular vanilla gay character.
Most of the characters treat others culture and customs as quant little eccentricities, not all the characters and not all the time but it happens a lot.
Now with the progress of the 1st 3 shows thats not too big of a problem, you can only do so much at once and hope youve done all you can. But sadly things started to go down hill from there
Voyager.
The 1st female Capt. often did thing in the worse way possible. Obeying the prime directive when bending it or breaking it would have been helpful to her crew and the alien of the week. Then on the next episode so totally goes rogue and breaks every rule and by doing so pisses off some faction and ends up with even more enemies.
Magic Indian, wimpy Asian boy (Neilix had to fuck a Klingon woman for him because he was too scared, Neilix! And lets not forget he was killed and replaced with a duplicate I think twice.), and B'Elanna Torres explained above.
Enterprise
The black guy was just the black guy, didnt do anything and cant remember his name. (Though I hear this was because the actor was a substance abuser and had a contract so they couldnt just fire him.) Meek Asian girl, and what the writers though of as sexy content was sad. Real sad. oh no! my top fell off in the tube ting! And whats with TPol always almost going into Pon farr all the time?
Now reboot Trek has put things on the right track. Every character got there own moment and Uhura who has for the most part set dressing is now a main character, maybe even replacing bones in the trinity. Slight problem is this is the original cast so the possibility of getting underrepresented people in with new characters is small.
I guess Crysta, what Im trying to get at is that things like these are a long painful agonizing process and while things might not be perfect, there are worth while things out there. And we need to hold onto them and fight to get new and better things. I too feel the same way about tokiens as you do Crysta, but sometimes I think the way were given things might have warped our minds into thinking these things. At first I didnt bother watching Avatar: The Last Airbender because I thought it was just some stupid anime rip off that nick churned out to cast in on Naruto, 1 Piece, & Bleach and that it would be just like those. But also when I saw the characters I felt that it was going to be like how M. Nights movie was, Asian flavor with a white boy and some Indians as sidekicks who he saves.
Now when I saw the Dali Lama and 2 eskimo kids why did I think they were just tokens or some shallow attempt to say the show is honoring Mongolians and Indians? Its somewhat sad to think about it.
I think maybe why Crysta feels the who she does is because shes been burned too many times and just comes to expect something whos not a while man to either not get the treatment they deserve or are written out or out right killed or something like that. So she just figures who bother at times. I know I often feel like that. We fall in love with a cool black man and then there all like: Hey black man turn the power on. And hes fucking eaten the lizards. Its even sadder for me when the interesting girl dies and the plain boring blonde lives.
Damn its almost 2 I should quit while In ahead and stuff.

Now this is something I completely understand. There've been quite a few shows that started out with a diverse and interesting cast, but along the way all the minority characters are either killed off, written off, pushed to the sidelines, or out and out ignored.
Sometimes it's strange to me, because while I think a lot of people are racist/sexist/otherwise bigoted, and I absolutely think Hollywood is pretty racist, but it still feels so off that these sort of things happen time and time again. I'm getting totally off the topic of comics again, but what's really confusing to me is that I assume the biggest motivator for all these organizations is money, but doing these things doesn't seem to be in their best interest. Statistically speaking, hispanics are more likely to pay to see a movie in theaters than any other demo, but the percentage of hispanic characters in movies is really small. Even when hispanic actors are getting parts, they're often cast as white characters. Tyler Perry's movies make insane amounts of money, but he is one of the only people out there doing movies with a predominately black cast.
I believe that a big part of the problem with comics right now is nostalgia based and not motivated by racism. I think you actually posted an article about this, Tom! Writers want to get rid of legacy characters and bring back the characters of their youth, but since so many of these characters are minorities, and comics don't have enough minority characters to begin with, it becomes pretty problematic. I wish more writers would learn from how well Ted Kord/Jaime Reyes stuff has been handled.
Comic fans can obviously be a problem with this too. When Dwayne McDuffie was doing his run on JLA, he wasn't allowed to use just about any of the universe's heavy hitters, and was blocked from many other minor characters as well, since they were in other team books or had other important story stuff going on. He brought in what characters he could, several of whom were black, and the outrage over this was disgusting. There were people all over whining about the "reverse racism" (no words for how much I hate that term, btw), and how he was only doing this because he was black. Team books are one of the few places female and non-white characters have really been allowed to thrive, and it's depressing to see they're still only allowed to do that if there are plenty of white guys around. I wouldn't pick Vixen for the JLA either, but she's certainly much better than someone like Congorilla. And what could possibly be wrong with established heroes like Cyborg and John Stewart being a part of the league?
With comics and with any other form of media, people will often blame its failure on the sex and race of the characters. Ongoings like Black Lightning, She-Hulk, the Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle series, all are said to have failed because readers don't want to read about black/female/hispanic superheroes. But nobody tries to say that series like Magog, Captain Britain (which was amazing, btw), The Web are canceled because people don't want to read about white dudes. I feel like these comics are often under-appreciated for how well they do sell, too. Birds of Prey easily outsells books like X-Force, X-Factor, and both JSA books, but the only other female dominated team book I can name is the Gotham City Sirens, which, although it is a comic I enjoy, is pretty much cheesecake. Zatanna's ongoing beats books like Deadpool Corps, Teen Titans, and the celebrity written Green Hornet, but her character isn't getting any sort of mainstream attention.
So yes, it's very frustrating, but that's why I make an effort to buy books like Power Girl every month to try to get it through to comic companies that this is what they should doing more of. Even though I really like talking about stuff like this here, my wallet is the biggest vote I get and I try to take full advantage of that. If only there was a way I could pay DC to give Mr. Terrific an ongoing (or to let me write my Martian Manhunter/Miss Martian one).

It's not racism, it's money.

And robbu, I think it's a great comic and a lot of fun, but the art is pure cheesecake. What the hell,Poison Ivy is a Swamp Thing!
I think one of the other problems that goes with the nostalgia thing you said is that when you adapt an older property, one which is mainly white men you have 2 choices if you want more female or minority characters, change an already established character's color or gender or add an original character. Both of which are met with shaky results at best.
I'm not all that thrilled with changing a character by swapping their color or making them gay or stuff like that. Sometimes it can work great like, say Michael Clarke Duncan as the Kingpin. But is has to be done in a certain way, very carefully. Most of the time it doesn't work all that well like it comes off as kinda uncomfortable. Like a person's color which will hold a strong history for his or her background is just set dressing and can be swapped out like a clothing style. Not that with some characters their color is always an important part of their background it's just if not handled correctly things come off as condescending at best and ignorant as worst (or should I have switched those?)
Personally I'd rather see a new gay hero than make Colossus gay or instead of making some 3rd tier character Hispanic who was already white make a new character if you want to develop a latino but some people just plan hate new guys so they'll claim those as tokens.

I don't particularly mind race/gender/sexuality changing if it doesn't happen in the main comics universe, like with Colossus. Just doing it for the novelty of it might come off as lame, but you know, I think there are interesting stories you could tell with a gay Batman, an Asian Superman, a female Joker. Sometimes I don't think the Ultimate Universe takes advantage of the opportunities presented by an alternate universe enough and it's often used to tell near identical stories without having to worry so much about backstory.
But in the main comics universe, Colossus or Batman becoming gay wouldn't fit what we've seen on the characters at all (yes, non-bat comic readers, Batman is pretty firmly established as being straight). Changing Superman's race would be extremely weird, and no one wants to see anyone else be the Joker (though I actually think you could do a neat story with Harley Quinn trying to pose as the Joker). I have no problem with making characters who haven't been established as being straight gay or bi. Rob Liefeld hated it, but I think the Rictor/Shatterstar stuff was doing this right. It not only didn't conflict with what we knew of the characters, but it drew on the character's past together to set up their relationship. Changing a character's race is pretty much always problematic to me, but I didn't think the Kyle Rayner thing- raised by a single mom, later learned his dad was Hispanic- was too bad, if that's what you were referencing.
I love legacy characters, but when they're handled badly, it's a mess. I have absolutely enjoyed Barry Allen since he's been brought back to life. However, the guy'd been dead since the 80's, so the very least they could have done was thought through how they were going to handle having so many Flashes once he was around. 4 guys with speedster Powers, similar color schemes in their costumes, who have all used the name "The Flash" is pretty problematic, but it can work if every character has a clear and separate role in the universe. And without Barry, they pretty much did. Jay Garrick is somewhat retired, has diminished speed capabilities, is referred to by his last name and, though he still fights with the JSA, works largely in a mentor role, frequently giving advice to the other people in the Flash family. Bart has taken back the Kid Flash mantle (he should be going by Impulse, but I can live with this), and he works with the Teen Titans, who don't otherwise have a speedster. The world of the Teen Titans and the adult heroes in the DCU is pretty separate (probably more separate than it should be, given the Titans death toll) so again, it works. But Wally and Barry are completely in conflict with each other. Their costumes are almost identical. They both use the name Flash. And they're both heroes who have served with the current JLA, and who have identical powers. Since Barry's newly back, it means Wally (and his family) are completely pushed to the sidelines. Finding a way to differentiate these two should have been something they worked on before Barry was raised from the dead.
And part of the reason I think the Batfamily has worked so well is how much they've worked to differentiate these characters from each other. Every character feels like they serve a different purpose. Gotham clearly needs all the heroes it can get, and since most of them don't have powers, it increases the need for them all the more. Things between the Batfamily and all the other Gotham based heroes are also really well organized, which I think more comics should try and use it as an example. All the characters Marvel has in New York has always been hugely problematic for me.
Making characters feel really separate and different even if they're a completely original character too is important, I think. I mean, if you introduce a new guy but he's basically got Guy Gardner's personality and super speed powers, it's going to be really tricky to make him seem vital to the universe. I know she's not completely original, but look at Batwoman- really unique costuming, with the fire red wig, unusually done military background, the father/daughter team aspect, that in spite of her tragedy motivator she didn't even think to begin being a superhero till much later in her life, her rockabilly style when she's out of costume, coming out of the gate with her own villains, having connections to a retired hero, although she isn't aware of it. All these things help make her feel like an authentic part of the universe and a really new character, and I think all of that, plus the combination of having amazing art and a great writer for her stories (and getting featured in multiple high selling comics), is why she's been pretty accepted by fans and hasn't been dismissed as being ~that lesbian character~.
Exploring a new part of the world helps to create new heroes without it feeling like you're shoving characters in too. I know I've already mentioned Grant Morrison bringing in the Super Young Team from Japan and pulling Britain's Knight and Squire out of the Silver Age, but you don't even have to leave America to do this. All Bryan K. Vaughn had to do was stick his Runaways in LA, and it felt completely authentic for there to have been a supervillain syndicate that had basically been ignored up until this point. Runways had a pretty diverse cast of characters, and that coupled with the fact that it was sold in a manga like format when released in trades helped to bring in the new people to comics that both companies desperately need.
Comic companies can't keep catering to the guys who hate all new characters and who want things to stay exactly as they are. They have to appeal to new people, and they have to keep things from feeling stale. I know I complained about some stuff when all the Bruce being gone stuff was first introduced, but it wound up being fantastic for the Batverse, and I think the inexplicable removal of Cassandra Cain is the only aspect of them that's suffered. Change isn't always good, but it can be, and it's something that comics need. Better to try, fail, and amusingly retcon than to let things stagnate.

what you brought up about legacy characters is precisely why i don't like them, among other reasons. it just gets too messy and too complicated. i think that's a reason why i don't really like DC. WAAAY too many legacy characters. imo, there should only be one character with that one codename.
i agree on the gotham/marvel new york thing. i really like how in batcomics they all refer to each other. in birds of prey, oracle contacts the batcave for info/help, and then in GCS, harley or ivy or whoever will make a reference to another batcomic group/person. i've always liked cross referencing like that. also, i get annoyed by the NYC thing too. i mean, how many villains can be in one city, especially with that many heroes in it. how can regular people even stand to live there anymore with all the violence and chaos going on around them. that's why i was happy that they moved the x-men to san francisco. that city is barely used in comics, and it was a nice change of scenery, and it enabled for new stories to be told. this sort of relates to the runaways point you brought up. the fact that it was set in a completely new and unused city/setting allowed the comic to be fresh from the beginning, not to mention that it's an awesome comic that's so well written and the art, excluding that one little hiccup, is really good. i'm still super worried it's gonna be cancelled since it's been on hiatus for so long.
yes, it is better to try and if it fails, retcon, but sometimes retcons make things worse then they were before. you know the example i'm gonna bring up, lol.

I enjoy alternative universe stuff, like 'The Red Sun' & 'Superman - Last Son of Earth'...
Personally I felt 'Old Man Logan' where the start of the comic is the end of the world, at least for all the good guys, was better than most stuff to come out in recent memory.
I love to see more done with the universe.

Sorry i can't respond to every post. I do not have a steady internet connection, so i make due when i can. Now i will admit that Star Trek was the perfect example of good multiculturalism, instead of network pandering. Now the new Star Trek reboot. I'm sorry it just...OH gawd. I still can't get the image of Spock and Uhura french kissing! MAKE IT STOP PLEASE!!! Ahem...i have my gripes about the reboot as a fan of Star Trek since 1981, the reboot movie was good in some areas and totally insulting in others. More on that much, much later. Now as far as the rest of our topic. Yes i do agree that there are some good characters that are multicultural. Although i did not know that Kitty Pryde was jewish. To be honest i really don't care. But alas i don't have time to say much more so i'll end it quickly. Overall i think the entertainment industry does a lot of pandering to multiculturalism for the sake of money and to placate minority and special interest groups. Not because they actually care.

Yeah, I absolutely agree retcons can make things worse. They're why I stopped reading Uncanny X-Men and most 616 Spidey stuff. In the case of the Spidey stuff especially though, I don't think they were a retcon done because they tried something new that failed. A lot of great, interesting stuff was going on with him at the time. Pete had publicly unmasked, which was huge and hadn't even gotten played with much, storywise yet (worth mentioning that Quesada had said there'd be years worth of stories about this when it happened), and he'd also had a lot of growth as a character, including becoming a science teacher, which I though was a really neat development. Although I am a Peter and MJ fan, I'd be okay with them splitting up, but the way they did it is really problematic, even if you leave out the whole selling the marriage to the devil thing. Marvel (well, Quesada) has stated that they want their stories to be about a single Spider-man. Which means he might date, he might even be in a relationship for a while, but fans know after a while, things will go back to the status quo of him being a single loser again. And knowing that things aren't going to be changing is a huge problem.
I also think that with One More Day, they demonstrated that they are not going to let May Parker die anytime soon. And I think this is a big problem too. I'm not some old lady hater wishing for Aunt May's death, but this is another thing that makes the Spidey books feel as though they're never going to change. It's not good for the future of the comic.

Female Joker is a very scary thought indeed!
Having several non powered crime fighters working in the same location is a very good Idea. When Batman Beyond was on I wondered why Old Man Bruce only used Terry and not find at least a few more people. What if Terry quit or was wounded too much to function? Plus having several guys means you all can take a break and deal with non bat life like school work. How did Terry get anything done?
As for New York, it would make for a great one shot or mini series to have it like a Mad Max Escape form New York setting wear it's just super powers slugging it out in a huge war zone.

Even with my 20% subscriber discount (the price in parentheses, including tax), it's gonna be a long time before I get to the bottom of that stack. Frell, I've got credit cards with lower balances on them. Still, the lads running my Friendly Local Comics Emporium are understanding guys, and the fact that my brother's box has been twice as full for far longer goes a long way towards mitigating any impatience thay may have.
Also, there's more than a few things in there that I've stopped ordering (namely KoDT), but I don't want to stiff them for the ones that arrived in store before I stopped, so I will purchase them eventually, although I'm in no hurry to get them anytime soon.
Other stuff like the Marvel handbooks (Pretty much all the Marvel stuff I've got hold apart from Spidey-related titles) aren't something I eagerly await reading, but I'd like them on my reference shelf as updates to my Marvel Encyclopedia at some point and don't want to let them slip past me.
Still others, like Drone and Vampire, PA, languish in the bottom of the stack because the amazing colossal frak-up factory that is Diamond Distributors never shipped the first issue or two of each series, and no comics shop that I've been to in South Jersey can re-order them, so I'm not getting the end of them until I find the beginnings somewhere.
Be grateful that your choices are so limited overseas, as it will save you from getting in as deep as I am.

It's just not the same. A significant portion of my Saturday routine involves leisurely enjoying the week's stack over dinner at Johnny Rocket's, and I neither have a laptop to view them on while I'm out and about, nor is there sufficient counter space to set it up and risk spilling milkshake all over it. That's another point in favor of physical hardcopies: There's no risk of losing everything due to the uncertainties of viruses and hard drive crashes.
I also can't download T-shirts, hats, or figurines.

could change the routine, but i understand not wanting to (that sounds like a super fun routine!)
on the other hand, digital copies can never get torn or damaged, or have stuff spilled on them. and if you do lose them, you can just redownload them, whereas if you lose a hard copy, you have to buy it again.

Ah, but the trick is finding it again to re-download. Look at how many links for scores go belly up around here, and the original uploaders are no longer around to re-post, as well as at various vanishing blogs.

So many of my trades have such nice extras too! For someone like me who aspires to work in comics, it is amazing to see things like rough sketches for characters and script pages, or to be able to read what Grant Morrison's inspiration for Professor Pyg was. I just wish it was easier to see what kind of extras stuff came with when you order it online.

I'm not sure! We've done webcomic contests in the past, and they were pretty fun. I'd prefer to come up with something specifically related to comic books in this case, though.
I've actually been planning a completely different contest for a long time so maybe I should sort that out first. ;) I just got excited over the thought of being able to send comics to people, and maybe even being able to drive up interest in comics among the members here. ; ;

Oh! I thought you were talking about something in one of the comics I'd mentioned so I was super confused.
Lelouch is a pretty fascinating character! He reminds me of a lot of other characters I like, like Artemis Fowl, Bruce Wayne, and Light Yagami, especially when he Geassed himself. I'm pretty sure before I started watching Code Geass I'd talked with you about how much I like "just as planned" type storylines so I'm sure you can guess what my feelings about the show's ending are. Probably didn't need to spoiler that last bit but I feel like being cautious.

As weird as it sounds...I prefer 'softcover' for my collections.
Which tend to run a lot a bit more, at least locally.

Haha, I really like the art style, but I'm a bigtime Clamp fan. They have a very distinct style though, so I get why it turns people off. I actually think Code Geass is a bit toned down from some of their other stuff, at least with the impossibly long limbs.

I like Clamp too! But i find it hard to get into. Every girl looks like CC Sakura. Creepy, seriously fucking creepy. Like just about every girl in Masamune Shirow's early works look like Leona Osaki from Old Dominion Tank Police

I actually think Sakura looks pretty different in Tsubasa Chronicles versus CCS! Moreso than a lot of the other repeat characters, even Tomoyo. But I totally get what you're saying. They have some same-face issues and I also think they tend to style their female characters pretty similarly. Chii and Kobato are the ones who look too much alike for me, even though I enjoy them both.
They actually (to me) have a lot more variety in how their characters look in their darker stuff, like X/1999 or xxxHolic. Some of their other stuff, like Clover, is a lot more creative with their panel layout too, not sure if that matters to you or not! Anyways, I like their style and I find a lot of their stuff to be heartwarming in a very authentic sort of way. Maybe that's just because I'm less used to stuff that would seem cliche in Japan, though. ;)

Ugh. I am so tired of those effeminate looking gay/yaoi characters in anime and manga. I've been to Japan...and Japanese men do not naturally look like that!!! What makes it so creepy is that mostly men that draw characters like that. It would be cool if women did, then i could understand it better. *sigh*

CCS is Card Captor Sakura.
And Crysta, that picture was drawn by females. ^^ Clamp is an all female team. If you're not a big fan of that style of drawing male characters, though. I'd suggest looking into seinen manga titles. That art style doesn't seem to be popular there. I actually don't read a ton of manga, though, so I'm not so good with the recommendations in this department. I loved 20th Century Boys, I guess that's probably seinen!

Syrupy sweet useful before or after horror or dark or depressing show or movie to help give perspective on things, no?
Yes. As far as I can tell women now a days really only want gay man. Sister's friends always see everything as huge homo overtones even when not present, whenever seeing a man they almost always want to see him gay out, never want him to be with them for some reason. What's up with that?

Finished up 'Superman - Earth One (2010)', you know...the emo looking one?
It should be called 'Superman Begins'.
Pretty good stuff, rather enjoyed the whole 'he's not the world's biggest boy scout' stuff and the origin story was kind of cool.
Hope they explore this version a little more.

Also, finally, started reading 'The Walking Dead', after seeing the first episode of the series.
It's REALLY different from the TV show, which is a good thing.

I've read that in Japan the target market for yaoi is middle aged housewives? Not sure how accurate that is, though.
There's a lot of variety in Japanese leading men, I think it's just a really different culture in terms of the way people view stuff like that.
I haven't been liking JMS on the main Superman comics (Action Comics has been terrific lately though), but I enjoyed Earth One. It's a different take on the character that doesn't feel inauthentic, and I appreciate that, even though I don't know that someone like me, who loves Supes as he is, is the target audience.
Longshot maybe, but does anyone want to talk about what's going on in the bat books?

It's volumes. When they start renumbering a comic, it becomes V2, V3, etc.
Sometimes they do this after a series has been canceled for a while- this is the case with Teen Titans, and with other comics like X-Factor- and sometimes they do it at the start of a new storyline with an ongoing comic to try and boost sales, since there are plenty of people who will buy a comic just because it's the first issue of something.

More suggestions for Tanis:
Zatanna, Birds of Prey (both the currently running version and the volume before it), any of the X-23 books Kyle and Yost have written (she has an ongoing now too but it's really badly written), Alan Moore's Promethea (bonus: JH Williams III art), Terra's mini, Peter David penned issues of She-Hulk (I can't stand the character, but they are great), Spider-man Love Mary Jane (more awesome than it sounds), Alias (not about the tv series), Echo, Hack/Slash, Queen and Country, Kathryn Imonen's Hellcat mini, Greg Ruck's Black Widow stuff, Manhunter, the Bulleteer mini (part of Seven Soldiers, which I recommend reading all of. Zatanna mini from this is good too), Ed Brubaker's Catwoman, Fallen Angel, Love and Rockets, Anna Mercury
also: I've heard Spider-girl is pretty amazing
probably will continually edit this as I think of more
MadKalnod

I'd also recommend Paul Dini's Gotham City Sirens and the current Batgirl by (I believe) Bryan Q. Miller from DC. They're pretty entertaining. Also, Fables from DC/Vertigo is an ensemble cast, but many of the most interesting and pivotal characters are women. There's also iZombie from DC/Vertigo, where 3 of the 4 leads are women (they're also a zombie, a ghost, and a vampire, but that's another census).
From Dark Horse, there's Star Wars: Knight Errant, but I don't know it that's ending at issue #5 like it was solicited or becoming an ongoing.
There's also Warren Ellis's Anna Mercury and Freakangels from Avatar Press. Freakangels is another ensemble cast, but there's a pretty even ratio of male and female characters.
Boom! Studios does the FarScape comics picking up where the TV show left off, and the cast is majority female now. Boom! also does a series of 4-parters called The Unknown about a female paranormal investigator.
Radical Publishing offers Shrapnel and Hotwire, both of which have female leads. Artesia is a series of 6-parters from Archaia Studios Press about what its creator likes to call a pagan Joan of Arc.
And while none of the following are current titles, they're worth tracking down in trades or back issues:
Batgirl and Catwoman (the late-90s relaunches of each) from DC.
Aria from Image.
Mystic, Meridian, and Route 666 from CrossGen (These are strongly rumored to be coming back now that Disney, who bought CrossGen's IP, owns Marvel)

I didn't like it.
It was a mess but not like the show in a fun way and all the little nuances are either gone or downsized. On top of that it's real hard to tell who's speaking, what place the scene is meant to be in, what time frame i.e. flashback/foreshadowing/present, and the layout is confusing and muddy. And as for he characters they've lost most of there good but real messed up ness are are pretty horrable people at times.
The art style is nice and there area few useful pages and 2 page spreads for wallpapers and avatars and stuff.

Well, I think Quesada was a pretty terrible editor in chief. He thought about what he wanted books to be like and not about what was best for the characters, he was really antagonistic towards readers, especially over OMD, and he encouraged Marvel/DC rivalry. We still probably won't be able to get DC/Marvel crossovers again until he's gone from the company, but just having less fanwars encouragement in the media will be nice.
Axel Alonso wouldn't have been my first choice, especially since I think he'll probably keep OMD stuff around, but he's worked as an editor on some pretty terrific books with writers I really respect, so I think he has a lot of promise.

He was an editor for New X-Men. He's been an editor for Grant Morrison a ton of times, actually, including on one of my favorite comic books of all time, Flex Mentallo. He's also worked with Joss Whedon, Warren Ellis, Kyle and Yost, and Peter David, just to name a few. Before he went to Marvel he was an editor with Vertigo and I hope that influences his reign as Marvel's editor.
Of course, he also was an editor on One More Day. ;)

Point #1: I agree. Somewhat. Wolverine gets WAY too much exposure in the Marvel universe. Two Avengers books, his own book, and just about every X-book on the racks. Too fucking much. His character has been explored enough as is and frankly Claremont had the right idea.
Point #2: Your Jean? If I might recall, she's died so her marriage has been annulled and her old ball-and-chain is now shacking up w/ an ex-stripper. She's a free woman buddy and isn't yours. :)

Haha! Well, playing devil's advocate, I could say that she would've become better written with or without being shot, since she's definitely written better in anything that flashes back to her time as Batgirl.
But I think Oracle's such a unique and interesting character, and she adds so much to the Batbooks as a whole, even if writers sometimes make me facepalm with the way they handle hacking stuff. Current Batgirl usually doesn't get much to do outside her own book, Oracle regularly appears in most of the Bat titles and in several other DC titles. She became her own hero and not a sidekick, the same way that Nightwing did. :)

Batman and Scooby-Doo are teaming up for the first time since the early 1970s, in a bizarre episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold airing April 1. And here's our first glimpse!
The crossover airs as part of a special episode called "Batman's Strangest Cases," in which the all-powerful Bat-Mite (Paul Reubens) takes us through some weird alternate realities. Including the Scooby-Doo crossover, which is done in the style of early 1970s Hanna-Barbera animation. And an old Mad Magazine spoof from the 1960s.
