darn, that's a shame. But we are all thankful and truly do appreciate all you've done for us in the forums. I liked Kanno's music a lot before hand, but never did I truly appreciate her works in other media. So I thank you for helping me to experience her various works.

Set up a paypal account and we can donate to keep it alive!
Or if you want, I can host them on my website... I would have to get the files on my side to do that though. I currently have maybe half of your collection in either CD or mp3s.

I agree with NaYa, you should set up a PayPal account. This collection is too worthy to get lost, I would be one of the first donators for sure!

To answer your responses:

From RapidShare.com - "you will get points for downloads of your files. You can then convert your collected points (Premium-Points) to...extend your own premium-account for free. You will get one point per download if the downloader is a free-user AND your file is bigger than 1 MB AND the downloader has generated less than 5 points in the last hour. These rules have been introduced to protect us from abuse."

-So basically you guys are helping me out by downloading more (as free users). 10,000 downloads equals another month of service. Thanks to you guys I have been able to do this once. (https://ssl.rapidshare.com/faq.html)

No need for a pay pal (https://www.paypal.com/) account or anything! + Please don't download if you don't want to because I know some of you have already DL'd what you need & "RapidShit" is unfair to free users in multiple DL situations. - Thanks for your support=)

Hi everybody,
Just to let you know that OST 1 for Macross Frontier has been leaked already and released as a torrent:

I'd upload it to somewhere but it's 215mb and my internet connection is going up the wall.

But it's there anyway. :)

PS - Is it Vajura (fansubbers) or Bajura (OST track list)?

Vajura rhymes better for me :p

I second Sirusjr, I was waiting for the song that was on episode 8 at the panties chase scene. It played on episode 4 as well when Ranka went on stage, the song stuck on me since then and I was soo dissapointed that it didn't make it to the OST.

So I'm begging for another OST as well.

There is not in the slightest bit ANY doubt that there will be an OST 2, and probably an OST 3, at some stage. Particularly given that OST 1's first pressing was sold out three months before the release date. ;)

Kanno's Warsaw sessions usually record about an hour of orchestral music. There are ~20 minutes on OST 1, meaning we'll either get a very orchestra-heavy OST 2 with ~40mins, or we'll get OST 2 & 3 with the same amount again on each.

[Edit: Turn A Gundam had 1 hr 20 mins of orchestral music released. Escaflowne had 1 hr 13 mins. Brain Powerd had a round hour. Aquarion managed 50 mins, whilst Macross Plus managed only 30 mins. It seems about an hour is average. There will be more, lots more, to come - mark my words.]

I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that part of that scene uses "Home Stay" from GitS:SAC OST1. I may be wrong, but after watching SSS and listening to the OST I realised that something I remembered in that scene wasn't there on the soundtrack, and listening to "Home Stay" seemed to ring a bell. As I say, not entirely certain, but I think that this might be the case.

Actually they were recently divorced... from what I've read. This coming February will be 2 years of being divorced for them.

"ところでひとつ告白してしまいますが、私も昨年2月に離婚が成立しています"

Hold on a sec, which melodies were composed by Mizoguchi? If I had to guess, Shadow of Doubt from OST 2 and nothing else. Everything seems to bear stylistic similarities to Aquarion, Brain Powerd, and Turn A Gundam and I can barely detect the efforts of a second voice in there (aside from the classical and film composers referenced throughout.)

Hitomi's Theme, A Far Cry, Eyes, Cubic, Farewell, Perfect World, Romance, perhaps more, that's just off the top of my head. And I know a number of tracks from the film are by Mizoguchi as well

streichorchester
09-30-2008, 05:26 AM
I think you need to listen closer, because Kanno is the plagiarist of classical and film music, not Mizoguchi (as far as I know):

Farewell is ripped off of Poulenc's Double Piano Concerto:
http://jeremyrobson.com/poulenc.mp3

and the second part when the piano comes in is directly taken from Silvestri's score to Forrest Gump! And Kanno, as we all know, is a big Silvestri fan having used his music in Brain Powerd (The Abyss) and Macross Frontier (Van Helsing.)

Eyes is based on a famous Italian tune by Giuseppe Giordani called Caro mio ben http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-ndDEiDT-U that was also used in Brain Powerd (the track Ark, I believe.)

Listen to Cubic then listen to the beginning of Prism from Brain Powerd and tell me that's not the same composer.

Romance sounds a little too piano-oriented to not be written by Kanno, plus it does have that Western "Hollywood" sound we've already become accustomed to hearing from her.

A Far Cry is definitely Mizoguchi, I completely forgot about that piece (since it is largely forgettable.) There's your cello right there, with little to no orchestral ingenuity (on a 20th century orchestral level.)

Hitomi's Theme has some cello solos, but as I already said, it's based on a popular Italian song so it doesn't really matter who is claiming credit for it.

I'm certain a large majority of the Escaflowne soundtrack, and many of the tunes, are coming from Kanno and her vast music collection. To me it's a simple stylistic recognition.

Geez. *rolls eyes* I'm just going by what the freakishly detailed and comprehensive discograpy tells me, dude. And I gotta tell ya, I trust it a hell of a lot more that I do you.

Wow... Caro mio ben and Eyes sound so similar in that the first four notes go down by step in a major key with a simple melody...

I hate it when people read into things like this so much. I can look through loads of my piano books and find pieces which start similarly. In this case, we can say that they both plagiarised "Joy to the World" (thinking of a well-known piece off the top of my head which starts with descending notes in major key), by taking the first four notes of that but just playing it slowly?

It's the use of motifs which get people screaming "plagiarism". Music is theoretically unlimited, but there is a boundary for composers if they want to try something of a certain genre and just make it sound "nice".

You know what? Everything you said here is true, even the fact that the track Eyes isn't plagiarism. But that doesn't negate the other fact that there is a ton of quoting going on in Escaflowne, of both classical music and film scores. Some are innocent borrowings, others like the use of Poulenc's Double Piano concerto and Silvestri's Forrest Gump are not so innocent. There is barely a track in Escaflowne or any other of Kanno's scores that I can't deduce the source. The only other composer I can do that with is James Horner, who everyone generally agrees upon as a well-to-do plagiarist.

And as I mentioned earlier, Ark from Brain Powerd is also based on Caro mio ben, but this time containing a 12 note similarity to the melody, which is in fact plagiarism.

It'd be unwise to underestimate Kanno and just call it a similarity. She is a proven plagiarist with an extensive classical/soundtrack collection who does not credit her sources.

There's more to it than melody. The rhythmic motive and harmonic function are nearly identical. The Kanno version's harmony is richer though, and I prefer the string arrangement to a lied. However, I think it should be noted that the B section of Eyes doesn't seem to have any relation to the lied.

Ain't public domain a bitch? :)

Except many of the film scores that have been plagiarized are not public domain, hence using them without permission is illegal. But I'm sure you will take solace in the fact that most plagiarism in the entertainment industry goes largely unnoticed, so it is up to the individual listener to judge.

Maybe that's what you meant when you so recklessly decided that plagiarism is a matter of opinion. But if you choose to pursue a higher education in academia, my only response to that is I hope you always cite your sources in your essays. Believe it or not, you'd get a 0 for taking the Kanno route. You might not care, but I gotta tell ya, I trust academia a hell of a lot more that I do you.

Too bad there's not one composer in academia today that can hold a candle to Kanno's work.

Well, that's really your opinion, right? I like listening to Kanno more than Penderecki, Rautavaara, Corigliano, etc. but I wouldn't say her work is more original than theirs. Listening to Kanno for me is like hearing more Prokofiev, more Ravel, and other classical/film composers I like. I don't listen to Kanno's music to hear Kanno's style, I listen to hear how she's incorporated other composers' conventions and techniques into her own music. But even though I find that aspect enjoyable, it's not going to stop me from condemning it, just like with James Horner.

streichorchester: You are really full of yourself, but that doesn't deny the fact that you're damn right.

Some other sources:

Enigma's Sadeness in Idol Talk: the bassline gives it away at once.
Flairck in Atomic Bird: I can't remember the exact song, but the chanting style is identical.
The Beatles in Scooters: Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, one of the songs from that album is the one (but I'm no Beatles expert, so don't quote me on it). The brass wind instrumental is obvious.
Vangelis in Karen: The intro is just too reminiscent of his work, especially Chariots of Fire.

There's a lot more, but I'm not really musically savvy. I know for a fact that Kanno-sama is quite the plagiarist; however, her more intimate pieces, to call them something, like Torukia, are the ones I like the best. I think those show what her unique, personal style is about.

Just my $0.02

I've loved Kanno for years. I think if you transport yourself back to 1993 and listen to her soundtrack work compared to everything else coming out at the time you'll see her uniqueness. On a side note anybody have the music from Noiseman? I can't find it anywhere. That and her music in the original Tekkon Kinkreet demo. I've been searching for those for nearly a decade now.

I made a little discovery which then led to other discoveries, and I thought I might share them here.

Back in 2004, there was a live radio show presented by Maaya Sakamoto, in which she did some live performances. The show was called "Shounen Alice Unplugged" and was to promote her album at the time, so most of the songs are from the Shounen Alice album. There is also an acoustic version of Danielle and Tune the Rainbow - you can hear somebody count 1-2-3-4 at the beginning, which I'm sure is Yoko Kanno herself (or somebody who sounds just like Yoko Kanno and Gabriela Robin at the same time).

You can download the live tracks on this page. Just scroll down and click "download":

http://clos3th3world.blogspot.com/2007/12/maaya-sakamoto-shounen-alice-live.html

If you want to download the whole radio show (about an hour long), there is a lower quality version of it here. Look for "Live Studio Unplugged Shounen Alice":

http://www.asianload.com/forums/index.php?act=Print&client=printer&f=372&t=23047

And while I was looking at that page, I noticed "Unreleased Tracks", and I just HAD to find out what they were. It includes some old non-Yoko songs from games with synthesisers in the background - not exactly Maaya's best songs. Anyway, here's the list of what's in that file, and where they're from (as far as I can work out).

Ashita he no Tobira - theme song from Yuki: Little Lovers 2nd game
Primary Days - from Asu wa Koishite -Prime Beat Planet- game
Story - opening song from Mebius no tokei game
Yoake no Kaze Kikinagara - theme song from Omishi Magical Theater Risky Safety anime
Call Your Name (Short version) - Escaflowne Prologue CDs (similar to Call Your Name piano version on Escaflowne movie soundtrack, just edited kinda badly to be shorter as in you can hear where it's cut)
Yume Iro no Lolipop - character song from Medabots anime
Aqua - insert song from Missing Blue game
Love Mania! - ending song from El Hazard: the Alternative World anime
Taikutsu to Yuutsu - character song from Kita-he game
Gathering Rain - from the musical Letter ~ Bring to Light
Go For It! - character song from Mizuiro Jidai anime.
Dear You - from the musical Letter ~ Bring to Light
Yubiwa (acoustic version) - Escaflowne Prologue CDs
Tell Me What the Rain Knows - from Wolf's Rain OST 2
Wasurerarenai Mama - ending song from Mebius no tokei game
Cloud 9 - from Wolf's Rain OST 2
Teens - from Devicereign game
Remains - from the musical Letter ~ Bring to Light.

A more recent live performance from August 2008 can be found here (64 kbps):

well you could try a conversion program and make them .mp3, though that would kill the quality...though if you're into lossless, I hear .flac is the best... but I'm not an expert on those things.

You could also try finding out if your player has the option of playing it with an add on/plug-in (or anything else they may be called concerning the program in question). To find out if such is available, check the manufacturer's website, these may not always be free... depending on the software.

for those plugins concerning winamp, check here: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=155680

If your talkin' about a music player app, then what your using is crap! Ogg Vorbis is pretty much as standard as mp3 in all music players (i don't know about itunes though). I recommend winamp but there tons of other options out on the net.

If your talkin about an Ipod, it doesn't support ogg unless its hacked. If you don't have an ipod, Read what your mp3 player supports, it might have a Firmware update to support it.

Hey guys; after we've collected all the tracks, albums and singles from dear Yoko, how bout' we make a rarfile of everything? It would be huge, yeah, but on the other hand we have it all in one.

It's like having a cake and eating it too. :-)

:)
sound nice but I think both Yoko and the singers will keep releasing their pieces
so its quite hard to do that unless we will do something like
rar files for release in year xxxx - xxyy
or maybe rar them all every Xmas.

hmm its size gonna be big like hell = w='' either way.

That's true, nemesis.
Rarfiles for releases in year sounds better in this case.

YUS!
Thank you!
I love those anime techno albums. >..>'

BTW,
Did you know that Masaaki Endoh came out with a new album?
It'll be released in 2 days I think.
I was a little disappointed because the title features a lion, and I immediately thought, "Oh, He's doing Lion from Macross Frontier!" But the tracklist did not mention Lion or anything to do with Macross F. : (
Nontheless, It will still be great because it's going to have GO TIGHT! from Sousei No Aquarion!
That's something to look forward to!
Yeah!

How do you find all these cds @_@ If I bought all the ones listed it would cost a small fortune!

InterWeb, Your Friend & Master, lol.

>But seriously I got most of it from:

1) yk lossless torrent (don't know if it still exists/seeded) which had 90% of YK's music in lossless form (flac, ape) (20GB!)
2) Interweb
3) Yoko Kanno Database forum (http://www.monkey-pirate.com/ykdb/) (and you thought i had a collection, some of these guys actually own all the CDs!)
4) From people like you:puppydog:

PS - Now that I think about it, it probably cost me hundreds of dollars in electricity bills just to DL the YK lossless torrent for 5 days without turning off my computer.

First off I'd like to thank jedinewtype for being awesome and nuts enough to upload all of this stuff and organize it so well! And secondly, since there are so many sections for Yoko-clan artists, I was wondering if a Mai Yamane section might ever pop up? She's released a lot of albums under New Archaic Smile and other projects, but they seem to be rather difficult to find.

A question to any who might have an answer.
I'm pretty sure I've got all the Ghost In The Shell SAC soundtracks. However, the one track I've yet to find is the music from Tadako's party in the episode "Cash Eye." Most sources say that it is the track Icy Mice from the Get 9 single. Well, unless the American release of the episode has a different music mix than the Japanese version, this is not the right music.
So, does anyone know what the actual track is and where it could be found? Thanks in advance to anyone who makes the attempt,
JonC

A lossless rip of GITS:SAC OST1 would be unreal. I originally have a 160kps rip of it complete with noise issues, and the VBR rip that you have has blip problems throughout some songs.

Wow, massive hearing capabilities you have... What is a "blip", then? I assume I'm not that gifted a listener, since I've never noticed.

Awesome!!!
I was looking for "NHK Special CHINA" for a long time.
She's working quite well to this work.
And "Nobunaga's Ambition - Sound History" is also good.
This contains a main theme of a series and an ending theme, so I'd like to suggest an orchestra thing to a favorite person.
Anyway, I'm happy today. Thank You very much!!!

I am curious about NHK special china. How would you describe it? Symphonic? Jazz/blues? Electric?

I've started a Lossless Anime Music THREAD (http://forums.ffshrine.org/showthread.php?p=1257317), but I will not upload any YK content there...

YK fans can now request Lossless content from me on this thread now!

I will try to meet your requests. (Please no laundry lists! / no long lists!)
Albums that say Source: Encoded from APE/FLAC/ALAC on the main post, I definitely have in lossless. So, please stick with those albums.

Dear jedinewtype

May I ask for the upload of the following album in lossless when you can?

The album has been out-of-print, so essentially unobtainable, for a while...

Nobunaga's Ambition - Tenshouki OST

I would much appreciate.

Sorry man, the only one I got lossless is Nobunaga's Ambition - Sound History (Thread 44707).

PS - Its a shot in the dark but try asking the guys at ykDB Forum (http://www.monkey-pirate.com/ykdb/). Most of the guys on the forum are hardcore collectors. Just make sure to post like 5 times on random posts to get into their hidden 'Files to Share' section. (http://ykdb.monkey-pirate.com/index.php)

Im just wondering, I was watching Ghost In The Shell 2nd gig and the episode where some AI hijacks the helicopters and they begin swirling around some tower. Well when they show the copters on a career, I heard like taiko drums and I couldn't find this track anywhere. I downloaded the unreleased scores that had background music from the series but I couldn't find it.

Unless I missed it somewhere, would anyone happen to know what it is and where I could find it?

A few months ago i made myself a music rundown of GITS SAC. I made the full 1st season and 'till episode 13 of 2nd Gig. That track is not in any official CD or the 2 unreleased music collections. The only music i didn't have at that time were the tracks from the Tachikoma USB drive from the Ultimate Collection (?). I got those tracks in these forums yesterday but haven't compared them to any of the missing songs on my notes yet. I intend to finish the list, eventually.
So basically, unless its one of those USB tracks, that music you're asking about has not been released (officially or unofficially).

Hi, jedinewtype.

I'm downloading from other source a torrent with various lossless discs from Yoko Kanno, but from there I'm searching only (by now) the Turn A Gundam and Macross Plus OSTs. The thing is that I'm interested in the scans of that albums, but in that torrent only I can download the booklets from a big pack, but I don't want to download it all, so, Could you help me with the BK scans of the Turn A Gundam (excepting by the ones that you already uploaded) and Macross Plus discs?

Well, that's all by now. I'm hoping for a soon answer and thanks in advance.

I really wish people would read the 1st post... Here's some great sites that have HQ scans: Y.O.K.I.A. (http://yoko.kanno.information.archives.googlepages.com/theyokokannoinformationarchives) (is in english but hasn't been updated since 07) & ykfan.cn (http://photo.163.com/photo/ykfanbooklet/#m=0&p=1&n=12) (is updated, but in chinese). Note: you will have to download the individual jpegs.

On the third CD of Space Bio Charge is the ending song from Oban Star Racers called "Waratteta". It has never been released on CD before, so that's why it's "new".

Hi there, Amazing thread jedinewtype!.

I just found out about the Yoko Kanno concert held on 7/7 this past week in Japan. If you haven't read about it, visit here:
http://gabrielarobin.com/2457/throwing-a-bone-to-us-less-fortunate#comments

At this link they have sample excerpts from the concert. There is a full bootleg recording of the concert online somewhere but I can't seem to track it down. If you read the following comments on this page some of the commentors elude to this.

I appreciate your work on this site. If you can check into this bootleg concert that would be appreciated. I will continue to search but you may have some connections I don't :)

YOKO KANNO SEATBELTS CONCERT JULY 7/2009 BOOTLEG RECORDING
Took me a while to find this but it's here.

Quality is so so, whether or not this will get a release we'll have to wait and see. Some members in the Yoko Kanno fanbase were limiting who could have access to this until someone posted the Megaupload link!

ENJOY!

Sorry to interrupt, but I was wondering if anyone could give me an evaulation of Turn A Gundam. Specifically, I'm a fan of the music for Cowboy Beebop and Ghost In The Shell. What I was curious about was how the music for Turn A compares...Does it have a similar feel, is it completely different?

Thanks for any advice that is available,

Turn A is almost completely orchestral in nature. It's sound is quite different from the soulful, rocking jazz of Bebop and the futuristic soundscapes of SAC.

I still reccomend checking it out. It's all superb stuff.

yeah I think its unreleased, seems like alot of the basic background music has been unreleased. I know "Smooth In The Shell" contains some but not most of the background music.

Yes, I'm sorry I forgot to mention in my previous post that it was the FLAC links that I was referring too... And I think I've confused myself with the links because I found most of the lossless links to the GITS OSTs from your thread...

If it's possible for you to upload the FLAC version, that would be wonderful... And thanks again for all the awesome Yoko Kanno uploads! :D
