Well i do have a capture device so it would be considered a gamerip?? I'm not sure what the differences are since I'm kinda new to this.

A game rip is when the game's music files are transcoded to .mp3, .flac, .ogg, or whatever. It involves going into the game's files, finding the music files, and using a program (such as vgmstream) to read the game's music format and create an uncompressed .wav file, then encoding it with whatever tools you prefer to a format such as .flac, .mp3, etc.

A line-in rip is when you play the music in-game, and you plug the game console's audio out connector to your PC's line-in (or any other device that accepts audio input, such as your capture device), then record the audio on your PC.

The quality of a game rip is always higher than the quality of a line-in rip. The reason is that a game rip literally moves the audio from one digital format to another, as opposed to moving from digital to analog to digital (which is bad for several reasons, especially considering the very imperfect nature of analog).


Try to imagine taking a screenshot of a Super Nintendo game, such as Yoshi's Island. Save it as a .png file and open it in your favorite image editor, such as MS Paint, Photoshop, etc. It's beautiful, pristine, and all the colors look vivid and consistent. You can safely take that .png file and convert it to a .gif or a .bmp, and it'll have the same exact beautiful and pristine look (assuming you convert the file with the right settings).

Now imagine taking that SAME screenshot and printing it out with a printer. Then scan the image back to your computer with a scanner. The result will still look great, but it is nowhere near the perfect colors of the original screenshot. If you try using the Fill tool on the picture in an image editor, it won't work very well because the colors are all slightly off.

That is the difference between a game rip and a line-in rip.


In short, you should almost always strive for game rips. Of course, a game rip is not always possible, because the digital format of a game may not be cracked yet (as is the case with Smash Bros. for Wii U), so just wait patiently for someone to crack it, or better yet, try to crack it yourself. :)


And please don't take this post to mean I don't appreciate what you've done, there is definitely a place in the world for line-in rips. (For many years, all we had for Twilight Princess and some other GameCube games were line-in rips, for example, because their audio formats weren't cracked.) It takes time and energy to create line-in rips, so I thank you very much for the rip!

Don't read into it much, since this is a temp rip and I have crap internet I'm not worrying too much about making it full on 320kbps, nor FLAC.

PAC-MAN SMASH SECTION V1.0 IS UP, IT IS VBR0

[Some tracks cut early, not early as in prematurely but it doesn't let the fade out flow to it's fullest so you get this abrupt fade out, it's minor really but still, you also wait an extra half second for some tracks to start, hardly noticeable for most] These are all little things that will ONLY usually bother pickier people, will have to fix in the future and add tracks that users will unlock. If the game rip isn't uploaded any time soon that is. NOTE: These 'problems' are non-existent in Mother.

Is anybody else at all pissed that very few new remixes were actually made for this game? Sure, the Smash category has a lot of new songs, but for for all the other categories, almost all the songs are either taken directly from the original games or are remixes from previous Smash games. This deeply disappoints me because Brawl had tons of remixes that were made specifically for Brawl.

B. Budget [You have to take into consideration that people DO get payed for making music, more music = more money]

C. Having the game become 'Download-Friendly' (Even thought it IS more than 17 gigabytes)

D. Future DLC, semi related to C.

E. Time Constraints [Music is hard...for some people at least- musicians keep at it until they get it right, See D]

F. Convenience ["It's already there, why make more?"]

But when I compare it to how much new music Brawl had, I just can't reconcile it. If they were able to make so much new music for Brawl, then why weren't they able to do it here, and if they couldn't do it here, then why were they able to do it in Brawl? I know that the first 2 games didn't really have all that much music either, but in my mind, Brawl really raised the bar and created a new standard for all future Smash games. But maybe I was wrong; maybe Brawl was just a special exception and was never meant to indicate a new trend in that department, and maybe I should just expect the 1st, 2nd, and 4th games to be the trend.

Parasite Queen myself (Don't have my Wii U with me at the moment, which is slowly killing me) but my understanding is that it's easier to pull off if you plug in four controllers and control everyone in a game of Smash Tour. That way when the Metroid shows up, you won't have to fight with the computer to get to it first after you get hit.

Okay, so to clear up the confusion regarding number of tracks and their order I went through this video of the complete Sound Test list (https://www.dropbox.com/s/n1v97r493sj6uot/141122-222540.avi) and matched them up against this spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1n33P1JGUq_LeokZoRVHvwnwkFmUtV8xx6xDRGlcyu7M/edit#gid=0). I can confirm that there are indeed 437 tracks in the Sound Test. However, the spreadsheet also lists 15 extra tracks (including the opening and K.K. Rider songs). I have no idea if these should be included in this project, or how you would go about recording them. The spreadsheet is also missing one track from the Sound Test (#69, Jungle Level).

Okay, so to clear up the confusion regarding number of tracks and their order I went through this video of the complete Sound Test list (https://www.dropbox.com/s/n1v97r493sj6uot/141122-222540.avi) and matched them up against this spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1n33P1JGUq_LeokZoRVHvwnwkFmUtV8xx6xDRGlcyu7M/edit#gid=0). I can confirm that there are indeed 437 tracks in the Sound Test. However, the spreadsheet also lists 15 extra tracks (including the opening and K.K. Rider songs). I have no idea if these should be included in this project, or how you would go about recording them. The spreadsheet is also missing one track from the Sound Test (#69, Jungle Level).

Okay I'll look into theses tracks!

I can confirm that there are indeed 437 tracks in the Sound Test. However, the spreadsheet also lists 15 extra tracks (including the opening and K.K. Rider songs). I have no idea if these should be included in this project, or how you would go about recording them. The spreadsheet is also missing one track from the Sound Test (#69, Jungle Level).

My only concern is some of the albums vary wildly in quality. For example the Mario and Earthbound soundtracks are stellar with loud and crisp sounds, but others like the Metroid and Pokemon albums are annoyingly soft and quiet by comparison.

Is that a problem on my end (using iTunes / iPod) or is it because of the fact different people are ripping and editing different albums?

(I Personally rip pokemon and metroid)I noticed that too i believe they are editing tracks still. I'm leaving the audio enhancements to ungrateful dead, morbidcrab, and repawn.

They sounded fine after I normalized them so I'm not sure if that's neccesary, but I'll withhold judgement. I'm not exactly the biggest audio expert.
