totally excited for the Robin Hood Legacy collection - but i really hope they found stereo elements for the music!

I don't think the score was recorded in stereo to begin with: most pre-80s scores by Disney were not. Fantasia was recorded in "Fantasound" IIRC, which mimics stereo but is still technically mono.

Whateverrocksyourboat
05-27-2017, 11:58 AM
There's hoping though... Jungle Book soundtrack is mono on all the albums, on the bluray SOME parts of the score are in REAL stereo. Mary Poppins is, as well as Bedknobs. Guess they had no real Standard recording method in the sixties/early seventies at Disney. But if they kept more than one orchestral angle from the session the cd could sound better than the movie... still hopin'

I hope so too!!! Here's my top wishlist for both!

Animated:
- Hunchback
- Aladdin
- Beauty and The Beast

Non-animated:
- Summer Magic
- The Happiest Millionaire
- Bedknobs and Broomsticks

If there's going to be more, they'll be announced at D23. This year's D23 is going to be massive anyway (Thor: Ragnarok, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Avengers: Infinity War, Han Solo, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Wreck-It Ralph 2, Frozen 2 and Toy Story 4 for a start) so Disney probably wants to throw in some more announcements while everyone is paying attention. I doubt this is a one-off. This release is likely a way to reignite some interest leading into D23 followed by the announcement of a full wave at the event itself (hopefully). Another wave of Legacy Collections is a perfect thing for Disney to announce at D23.

I know for a fact that there isn't demos or lost chords.

The soundtrack to Robin Hood is 2 disc. The disc splits during the arrow tournament, then heads to the 2nd disc.

I know for a fact that there isn't demos or lost chords.

The soundtrack to Robin Hood is 2 disc. The disc splits during the arrow tournament, then heads to the 2nd disc.

...then why split it in the first place (unless it is an LP)

IF the tracklist floating around the internet is correct (the tracktitles are the same as on the promo pictures) then the score is just over one hour..so why split it?
Amazon says it has 41 tracks with 90 min of music...so there has to be more....

Prince Jay

There might be, and there might not be.... we never know until August

PeterJJ
07-15-2017, 06:20 PM
So this is what's floating around:

Amazon listing says

"A 2-CD set that features 41 tracks and contains over 1 hour and 30 minutes of content. Disc 1 includes the original songs and score from the film. Disc 2 includes bonus material like previously unreleased demos and bonus tracks. This is the definitive Robin Hood collection targeted to die-hard Disney music fans and uber collectors."

and here's the tracklisting that's floating around:
(no guarantee that it is correct!!)

Here's where the guy mentioned this, but take it with a grain of salt until we get more official information for now."

So, Robin Hood is out now right? Dang. I wish I had pre-ordered when I first heard about it. Beauty and the Beast is awesome too, I hope they do more older ones too though, like The Aristocats or Lady and the Tramp, or some of the ones which aren't available to the public at all yet, like The Rescuers would be great, or Sword in the Stone.

It is a little odd that we still haven't gotten a Legacy Collection for that one, isn't it? I suppose the original stereo elements haven't been located yet, as the previous releases were all mono if I recall correctly.

It really is. I would've thought they'd have released it to coincide with the release of Favreau's CG remake, but it would seem that was after their first "wave" of Legacy releases.

Mr Winkie!!! Love that film!!!

You should, Ichabod and Mr. Toad is a great movie! I've always loved it, watched it so much as a kid, even though the Headless Horseman used to scare me so badly lol. It's ridiculous how little it gets talked about these days. Seriously, nobody talks about this movie at all for some reason...Just because it's a package film doesn't make it bad you know. In fact it's probably my favorite Disney movie overall.

And for the sake of keeping this post on-topic, I'll also say that a Legacy Collection of Ichabod and Mr. Toad would be awesome too. The underscore by Oliver Wallace (fun fact: he played Mr. Winkie!) is really really good, just listen to the music from the Horseman chase, or the scene when Toad escapes by train, the music in both of those scenes is just fantastic.

James (The Disney Guy)

Too bad it would probably never happen though. Movies like Ichabod and Mr. Toad get shafted automatically because apparently "noteworthy" soundtracks get priority over equally-if-not-better ones that aren't released yet. I know there's probably more of a market for the renaissance type soundtracks but it still feels really unfair.

Alan Menken's score for Beauty and the Beast hasn't been released apart from the five tracks on the released soundtrack. Besides, this release is guaranteed to be a big seller which will lead to more Legacy Collections.

It's also one of Disney's most celebrated scores.

For me, it's Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Rescuers, The Great Mouse Detective, Mulan (20th Anniversary is next year and Jerry Goldsmith's Oscar nominated score is amazing in its complete form) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Not sure if they'll do Live Action a la Mary Poppins, but I don't mind if they release a 15th Anniversary expanded score of Klaus Badelt's "Pirates of the Caribbean" (chances are it'll be Intrada and not The Legacy Collection, but we'll see, though I wouldn't hold my breath).

There's only ever been one version of the Beauty and the Beast soundtrack (the only new addition has been Human Again). Alan Menken's score, often called one of Disney's best, has never received an expansive release.

Yes it would be nice to have a film that doesn't have a released soundtrack, but at least we're getting an expansive release of one of Disney's best scores.

Plus, this line needs a massive seller to keep it going. They can't just keep doing the less popular movies. They need to do the more popular films to keep the line going. This release is going to be massive and will probably ensure the films you mentioned will receive a release.

Agreed! The complete underscore of the film can only be heard in bootleg DVD rips but the quality is usually not good and the recording quality is not very clear. Beauty and the Beast is bound to be one of the most commercially successful Legacy releases!

I completely agree with this sentiment.
Believe me; I want a formal release for "Rescuers", "Fox and the Hound" and every old Disney score under the sun, just as much as Mr. Ponyo-Bella-Notte. But, a company can't thrive strictly on soundtracks that are, in all honesty, not going to scrape in very much cash (I'm frankly very surprised that Robin Hood happened at all, especially after such a long hiatus when the 'Legacy Collection' line had lost all momentum). Every once in a while, it's necessary to do something big -- something with a large audience who's eager to shell out cash for a stylish CD release, like one of the 90s/Alan Menken scores.

However, considering that this year marked the 40th anniversary of The Rescuers and Disney still skipped over it in spite of their moronic "release a soundtrack to coincide with a film's anniversary" rule, I am going to disgruntledly assume that Disney doesn't find it notable enough to release, along with The Fox and the Hound, all of the package films, and most of the studio's older live-action features. For crying out loud, I even recall someone who claimed that Randy Thornton said that "Rescuers" would never be released simply because there's not enough "demand from the fans". Bah...

For now, I think the best thing to do is hope that Intrada picks up all of these scores that Disney has proven itself completely uninterested in.
Actually, someone whom I spoke to from the Intrada crew told me that "Rescuers" would "probably happen some day", though I'm not going to take that offhand comment too close to heart.

Do you guys think these two links have decent credibility? They seem to have cover art but still no track details. BATB LC has been added to amazon.ca with the same Feb 9 release date!

First cover art for this series I've been disappointed with really. With so many iconic moments from the film to tackle such as Belle on the hill, the ballroom dance, the first meeting of Belle and the Beast, Belle and the Beast in the snow feeding the birds etc. the artist chose the Beast's castle which is a rather uninspired choice. It's a lovely cover, but for a film this iconic and this well regarded, you'd think Lorelay Bove would have wanted the challenge.

I mean, this shot was practically begging to be turned into the cover.

Not to mention this iconic image:

It's so iconic, it's important to the story and it's practically featured in the Celine Dione and Peabo Bryson music video...

I know a lot of fans, including me, are waiting for the release of Beauty And The Beast, one of the best scores by Menken, if not the best of the best. But judging by the poor unfortunate mistake in the Finale track of The Little Mermaid, and the interesting editing cuts and things we hear in Pocahontas, I have to doubt the engineers. I just hope they wouldn't ruin this title with mistakes worthy to be pittied by. Still, the fact that this film is receiving an expansive release makes me excited! If they do this title well, I will purchase one copy for myself. I got Pocahontas and was a bit disappointed at the clicks, so I did my own edits...... OK, enough said, I guess. :) Have a nice day, where ever you are! :)

That cover is fanmade. It's just a piece of concept art from the movie.

We'll surely get a more representative illustration.

neither image spell beauty and the beast that much. the beasts castle maybe, but no your image.
the rose is the single most iconic thing in the movie.

this was done in 40 seconds in photoshop just to give you an idea.

Er... That cover art is an unofficial, fan-made mockup. It's certainly not the work of Lorelay Bove.

The source image comes from this concept art created during the production of the original 1991 film:

If you ask me, I'm predicting that the final artwork will be based upon the ballroom sequence. It's nice and inviting, features the main cast, and seems like it would generally fit in best alongside the rest of Bove's Legacy Collection artwork.

EDIT: Whoops. Disregard my redundant message. When I was skimming the recent posts to see if anyone had pointed this out, I somehow missed gurrea21's message.

Now THAT is a cover. Guessing the songs appearing again on disc 2 is the instrumentals (finally some official instrumentals for the songs).

No sign of any demos or anything, but I can live without those for a more complete version of the score (time will tell if this is actually the complete score).

My guess is that Disc 2 mostly consists of work tapes and demos, rather than instrumentals (they were released in the box set The Music Behind the Magic, 1994)

Im so excited!!!! Cant wait to work on another expanded edition! :D

It must be the work tapes.... I mean, the only instrumentals that were really released that were apart of TLC were the instrumentals to Toy Story, which I find a shame that no other instrumentals...

Upon future releases, whatever they may be, I hope other instrumentals are released on the albums.

The only instrumentals we DO have werent released commercially for years...

So who knows, right?

My wish list would be the complete score plus instrumentals with no editing or cutting mistakes. But, well, who knows? For now, I have the 4CD MBM set, and so I guess the score cues Journey to the Castle and Escape From the West Wing/Wolf Attack will be the film versions, so the MBM versions would be alternates? Anyones, this set is going to be highly expected!

Lots of score, indeed! I'm very much excited! But looking at the score details, it's my understanding that some cues might not be there? For example Battle In The Castle is listed only 2 minutes and 27 seconds, but it's 5 and a half minutes in the soundtrack album. I guess there must be "something there". Let's see how this title will turn out. Or maybe Prince J could work on getting missing cues with higher quality from sources? I only have a DVD, and its audio is in AC3, so not usable, I guess.

It could have been split and the rest of the castle battle cue where Gaston is fighting the Beast, etc. are in "Death of the Beast".

I'm surprised the original 1991 album edit of "Death Of The Beast (Original Early Version)" isn't on here, since it was on the 2001 Special Edition CD.

I personally didn't want "Human Again" though, but after listening to it, it's no where near as bad as "The Morning Report" from "The Lion King", IMO. Here's hoping either Prince Jay or ggctuk (ggctuk's film edit of "The Lion King" is fantastic in every way) makes a complete theatrical film edit for this one.

But judging by the poor unfortunate mistake in the Finale track of The Little Mermaid, and the interesting editing cuts and things we hear in Pocahontas, I have to doubt the engineers.

That reminds me, I was considering making a somewhat complete edit utilizing TLC and the 2006 remastered CD (for the film version of "Fireworks", as it contains the chorus as heard in the film, something that TLC omitted), and reading the assembly on Chrono-Score, I gave up when it came to "Poor Unfortunate Souls". The track, "Ursula's Lair" contains an instrumental portion that's heard in the film, but combining both the album cut and this track was a nightmare. Again, here's hoping someone could do a great job for a film mix for this one too.

I was thinking the same thing as you! I don't think there's any need to worry that they left cues out. They always sort of merge them oddly :P The cues are actually much shorter than most people realize (they divide them up into smaller chunks for the recording sessions). For example in The Little Mermaid, "Eric to the Rescue" is actually 3 separate cues.

Thanks for your replies! So looks like I needn't fear too much. Well, I guess I'm just a bit too excited about this release. Speaking of The Little Mermaid, has a clean version of "Part Of Your World" ever been released? I mean, no monologue at the beginning? I can't recall, but I imagine it's hiding somewhere inside the Disney Princes series of compilations? I'm looking for that particular track......
Requests aside, I hope that the prologue in Beauty And The Beast would be clean of narration.

suteki_da_ne0087

I just hope that "Gaston" is the film version and not the album version. The album contained extra verses that weren't in the final cut of the film.

davidlai
01-27-2018, 06:48 AM
I'm sure it'll include the album version, because the film conclusion "my what a guy, Gaston" was taken from the reprise of the song. If you listen carefully, the ending of "Gaston" and "Gaston (reprise)" in the final cut of the film is the same, take, performance and all. So the extra verses that didn't make it into the film will be there. But will they use the album vocal track, or takes of vocals for the film edit, I don't know. We'll have to wait for the real thing to fall on the 9th. But, judging from past issues of The Legacy Collection, the chances for the album takes of songs to appear is quite certain, like all the songs in The Little Mermaid.

I hope once I get Beauty and the Beast, I can make the film versions of "Gaston" (with the "my what a guy, Gaston" from the reprise tacked onto it) and "Something There" (the original theatrical cut immediately goes into the Beast's bath music. Here is that original theatrical version, sadly it's in Greek because all the English language ones are from the Special Edition and goes immediately to "Human Again": https://youtu.be/ylZTuthX-yQ?t=2m2s), unless someone beats me to them, that's okay. I wouldn't mind collaborating for a complete original theatrical film mix project. :)

Thanx for that....if you know where the cuts & transitions are you always have the feeling you can "hear" them... :-)

Is there a different version of Part of your world? I used in both cases the legacy version as a basis and replaced the dialogue

Edit: took a closer look at the track(s) and I know now what you mean...

Well, I checked online and found that two compilation albums have the track that I'm looking for - the clean album version of Part Of Your World:
1 Ultimate Disney Princess, released in 2005, or 2 Disney Princess: Princesses, released in 2011.
These two compilation albums have that track, without the monologue, which is what I'm looking for.
You seem to be a really talented music editor, you can even remove the sound effects and speech in Poor Unfortunate Souls, just like Prince J! So amazing!!! I wish I can be able to do this! :)

Yes, empire SB did a great film edit of Beauty, and it was really interesting to hear how he did it. I believe that's because he has multiple DVDs of the film that he can pull it off?
Digital editing is so amazing! Let's see how the engineers will do to Beauty, but I have a feeling that the cue that underscores the castle tour, as well as the little cue before Human Again, might not be there.

I don’t think we need to worry :) I compared the runtime of some of the “isolated score” bootlegs against the runtime of the new LC soundtrack and from what I can tell, the LC release will have everything, plus a little more with Human Again and the underscore that intro’s that scene.
We will find out for certain soon! Does anyone find it odd that Disney Music Emporium hasn’t said a word about it, and yet even Amazon is pre selling it now and showing the official cover art? Are they intending it as a surprise? I can’t believe they’re not promoting it in advance or advertising.

I couldn't find a physical copy at my local Target, plus the clerks there were really rude to me (I think they *do* have it, but that's another story), so I've resorted to Lady Amalthea's upload and let me say that this is a Legacy Collection done right! Every chunk of the score is presented well here for the first time ever and I am ever so happy.

Now this makes it easy to make that original theatrical Film Mix I've been wanting to do (without "Human Again" and other film edits, etc.), unless someone will beat me to it, haha!

Actually its not the first time the whole score is on a Legacy release. Toy Story has all the cues as well. In fact some of the cues are unedited as it was originally recorded. The only problem with the Toy Story release is that two cues crossfade where in the film it was separated. But thats really it...

Yes, inbetween Something There and Humain Again there is a little bit of score missing, where they're cleaning the castle.

---------- Post added at 09:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:08 PM ----------

I hear two problems in this release. There's a weird fade-in-and-out at the beginning of Be Our Guest, and there's a little click at 2 minutes 5 seconds mark in "beast lets go", and the pauses in the cue are shortened compared with the OST album. Other than these, this is a great release. But I really think that the engineers should learn from those people at Intrada or the former CD releases from Film Socre Monthly, ETC.

I guess the missing part of score is due to the fact that this scene isn't in the theatrical release and was added later together with Human Again...

Yeah, but Human Again was also not part of the initial version, but was included in this issue. So it's a pity that they've left the cue out.

Problems aside, it's a great release. I just hope that the engineers would learn from film music companies like (I'll use initials here) lll or fsm. no...I got the "her" from the actual film itself...cut out the "their"...spliced everything together...
the music in the film is a bit lower so I superimposed a small part of the instrumental version of the prologue to get a "flow"
and tagged the clean ending of the orchestral version to the end.
took me some time to fit everything together...

I also did a film version iof Gaston but I am not 100% satisfied yet since the tagged-on ending still sounds a bit different than the rest

Wow! That's a lot of work indeed! I wouldn't imagine myself doing it, though I might fix the fade-in-and-out issue in Be Our Guest, at the very beginning. But that will carry out when I get my actual CD copy next month - which is still a long way away...
I dont quite care about the film version of Gaston, since I prefer more music instead of less. The film version just tags on the conclusion from the reprise, no new stuff...

Well, my personal physical copy of Beauty And The Beast will arrive next week. It has taken more than a month to ship this all the way from America to China. But once I get it, I'll find out of Something There and the b&tb single are sounding healthy and not lossy. Wish me luck! :)

Those are pretty good suggestions of which ones I'd like. Pretty much unreleased ones. It was quite a joy to have Robin Hood last year.

Rh was one of those grails you never thought would happen.

It was just nice to hear Robin Hood after all these years, complete and in good quality. What I want the most from Disney is to release stuff that has never been released. Even digital, if it has to. Just as long as it comes out so we can finally hear it.

Alot of the pre mermaid stuff.

The war ones (three caballeros ect) and some classic live action... song of the south.

Hi everyone!

So been a while, wonderful to have the additions of RH & B&TB.

Hopefully some others soon?

Aladdin, Hunchback, Rescuers, Sword in the stone ect..

I have a feeling The Nightmare Before Christmas will be next. It's celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, it's hugely popular and Disney makes a ton of money from it. And it would give Disney an opportunity to release Nightmare's complete score from the hugely limited Danny Elfman/Tim Burton music box.

That is actually a excellent point and would be incredibly welcome.

If I had to choose two I wanted most of all, Aladdin and The Fox and the Hound would be the two I would go for.

I just picked up B&TB and I got Robin for my birthday from a friend. The rest I got from my library until either I see them cheap or pick them up eventually. They are such a lovely set and the behind the scenes and concept art are just perfect!

I'm hoping we get Aladdin and Hunchback eventually, maybe Dumbo? I requested all 3 on their survey when you pop in the disc to a computer.

I can't wait for my copy! Maybe I can also take part in the survey? I hope so. :)

Is there a URL for the survey that you could share or PM? I put the discs into my computer but neither of them made any survey pop up :|

I second this. I'd be happy if I could perhaps slip them a quick suggestion for "Rescuers", seeing as they apparently believe that there's no demand for it. I've heard from at least one source (from the well-respected Randy Thornton, no less) that Disney won't release that film's score simply because they don't think there's an audience for it. I can only hope that their attitude has changed in the years since, seeing as Robin Hood was apparently viable for a big-budget Legacy Collection release.

I'm not sure which disc set let me do a survey I think it was the sleeping beauty one? I'm pretty sure it was the last one I got from the library. If not it was the Beauty and the Beast one.

After much delay in international shipping, I finally got my physical copy of the B&TB Legacy set. And I'm surprised to say that both Something There on CD1 and the single version of the title song on CD2 were from lossy audio sources. Good job to the engineers! ...... :( And, I didn't see any survey in any form.

strange thing is.. I got a few incarnations of this score on CD...OST, Special Edition etc...and the newer ones seem to have these tracks as lossy-sourced too....
at least the Music Behind... CD seems to have a correct version of these 2 tracks

Aladdin is on my top of my wishlist for a complete score in TLC along with "Hunchback", "Mulan" and "Hercules" is growing to me, especially after watching Lindsay's review on it and I loved how she wasn't bashing on the movie, but saw it for what it is and addressed both the good and the bad. Another would be 101 Dalmatians, as the older pressing of the CD is missing the Cruella De Vil song that plays on the radio during Christmas before Roger turns it off. It's a fun little score, especially with all the Jazz elements, as it was popular at the time of the release of the movie.

Other than that, I can't think of anything that I could think of that needs expanded scores, other than any of the other PIXAR films like "Monsters Inc.", "The Incredibles" or "Up" though I could see "Up" for an expansion next year, as it's the 10th Anniversary and it was a very big deal of a movie, especially if you consider that it was an animated film since "Beauty & Beast" to be nominated for Best Picture (Toy Story 3 followed soon after, making it the third movie to be nominated in that category. After that, it just stopped...)

I LOVE all those suggestions, with my 2 favorites being Mulan and Hercules. I really love both those scores! I also love your suggestions for the Pixar stuff as well but dont forget next year will be the 20th anniversary for Toy Story 2...

They stopped doing the anniversary thing already, I believe... maybe it just wasn't working out for them.

And the same can be said for the earliest pressings of the original soundtrack CD. It's as if they had a better source there or something. Interestingly, most of the other songs are from the same master tape for the OST album.
Also, the harpsichord sounds faint in the first half of "Enchanted Objects" track (start listening from 2:34 to 4:09 and see what I mean). This is a good release in many ways, but interesting mixing decisions like this, and the way the battle with the objects is mixed, shows that I can't put my OST albums aside just yet. As a fan of the music, I can't help but notice these differences...

Source?

Source?

While not a source, it was evident once "Robin Hood" was released on its 44th in 2017, rather than 2018 on its proper 45th. For me, it just paves the way for quicker releases on this line, rather than focusing on one big anniversary like the home video re-releases.

At least we're thankful to finally have "Robin Hood", though I would have opted for "Pete's Dragon" as well that year. Plus, I would love a crystal clear remastering of the showstopping and Academy Award nominated "Candle on the Water". If Helen Reddy doesn't melt anyone's heart with that song, it might as well be made of stone. It's by far the best film song of '77, along with Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better".
