Super Mario World: Mario and his dinosaur companion, Yoshi, are looking for the dinosaur eggs Bowser has stolen and placed in seven castles. Many secret exits aid Mario in finding his way to Bowser's castle, completing 74 areas and finding all 96 exits. With multiple layers of 3-D scrolling landscapes, find items including, a feather that gives Mario a cape allowing him to fly. and a flower so he can shoot fireballs. For any Mario fan this game is a must.

This is a really hard choice - Super Mario World was pretty much the first SNES game I ever played, and it's the game that made me fall in love with the platforming franchise. But the Crash Bandicoot series (specifically the third iteration, Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped) is what made me find platforming joy on my PlayStation.
However, since we're going on life-time achievement here, i'd have to go with Super Mario World. As the ambassador of the 2D Mario games, they are 2D platforming in its purest forum. I can't say that every Crash Bandicoot game reaches lofty heights - like Crash: Twinsanity.

Tomba!: Tomba sports fresh, very cheerful graphics, decent sound and music appropriate for a platform game, and smooth controls. There's a lot of moves to master, but signposts along the way teach you how to use your controller as you progress through the game. Some areas of the game allow you to explore the foreground and the background of the level as separate areas, but don't let that fool you: Tomba is at heart a 2D game.
Super Metroid: Take on a legion of Space Pirates and a new Metroid force as you forge into the underworld of Planet Zebes! It's up to you and Samus to recapture the long-surviving Metroid hatchling before evil hands unleash its energy. An army of ominous creatures are poised for battle at every turn of Zebes' twisted threatening passageways...including the menacing Ridley and the great lizard Kraid. Knock down enemies with a killer somersault and swing on an electric beam through narrow passageways! They're no match for you and Samus...but wait! It seems the Mother Brain has returned...

Prince of Persia The Sands of Time: Amidst the scorched sands of ancient Persia, there is a legend spun in an ancient tongue. It speaks of a time borne by blood and ruled by deceit. It is within this war torn land that a young Prince discovers a magic dagger. Drawn to its dark powers, he is led to unleash a deadly evil upon the reaches of his father's vast kingdom. Aided by the wiles of a seductive princess and the absolute powers of the Sands of Time, the Prince stages a harrowing quest to reclaim the Palace's cursed chambers, and restore peace to the very fabric of Time itself. He must tread these dangers carefully, however. Because in this world, there is only one rule: master the Sands, or be buried.
Mega Man 2: Widely Regarded as the best Megaman game (despite the worst box art) this game pits our hero against such foes as Airman, Heatman, and Quickman, and of course the infamous Dr. Wiley. Anybody who has ever played the game will always remember the difficult platforming levels, along with the puzzles that force you to use your arsenal of various weaponry.

This is an unfair battle for me - i've always hated Mega Man, especially Mega Man 2. To me it was a half-hearted Metroid clone with no-where near as much fun. Conversely, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is one of the best games i've ever played. Warrior Within was disappointing, but the original was a classic - the puzzle gameplay and the smooth controls, along with fun (if occaisionally tedious) battles was a terrific mix.
Absolutely no contest at all. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is my favorite platformer of all time, as well as being my second favorite game of any genre. Warrior Within definitely isn't as good (I'm playing through it now, as a matter of fact.), but it still has excellent platforming puzzles and a pretty nice combat system.

This is a tough decision for me - both are brilliantly designed 3D re-imaginings of their 2D counterparts. Both managed to bring what made the 2D games great into the 3D realm, and added innovation of their own to the fray.
Even now, i'm having doubts as to which is the better game - at the moment, i'm slightly biased - I just bought my DS, and I have two games - Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt and Super Mario 64 DS. The control on First Hunt is brilliant, while the control on Mario 64 DS is slightly annoying. I've had more deaths due to the fact I suddenly stopped running at the wrong moment then any real mistake.
However, it isn't a rumble between these two games, it is between the originals - and out of these, I have to give the points to Super Mario 64. If for no other reason than imagination - Metroid Prime was creative in a sci-fi sense, but Mario 64 went to places you would never have thought of.
Still, I think i'm going to have more trouble deciding between Super Metroid and Mario 64. I guess I'll have to wait and see if that even happens...

Well, I initially believed Super Metroid, the best platformer ever, I am going to have to re-phrase it to ONE of the best platformers, ever.
Super Mario 64 gets my vote, and always has in this rumble.

After playing Super Mario 64 for most of the weekend, i've got no doubt in my mind that it is a fantastic platformer. The levels are imaginative (and some fiendishly so! - Rainbow Ride, i'm looking at you) and overall it's a terrific re-imagining of the Mario franchise.
However, I can see myself stopping after I finish the game - there's not much to go back to. The playability, while fun, is infuriating at times. Meanwhile, Super Metroid is pure fun all the time. Even after the first play through, you want to go back again, and again. So, my final vote, even though i've backed Mario all along, is for Ms. Samus Aran.

Super Mario 64.
This was my first video-game. I loved everything about it; the story, the characters, the enviroments. They were all great, and they still are. I played Super Metroid about two weeks after I beat Super Mario 64. A friend of mine loved his Super Nitendo, and made me play every single game he bought for it. Super Metroid was a good game, but Super Mario 64 will get my vote over it any day.

Not like it's going to matter much :(
Super Mario 64 was such a revolutionary game, and is still to this day the greatest game to be released with a system, easily. There hasn't been a Mario game since then that has come close to the greatness of this game, and I don't know if there ever will be. Collecting 120 stars, venturing into 15 unique and exciting levels; it was all amazing.
Super Metroid is still my favorite game of all time, even if it is 2-D. The gameplay is perfection, the levels are designed brillantly, the music is so awesome (especially in the latter stages of Norfair, which made a most welcome comeback in Metroid Prime). Just talking about it gives me the urge to play it again and experience the magic once more.

Here we are. The Platforming Rumble is over. Such great games as Castlevania: Symphony of Night, Rayman, Sonic the Hedgehog, Donkey Kong Country, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and Ratchet and Clank have all been eliminated.
It comes down to two great games. Super Metroid and Super Mario 64.
THE FINAL WINNER OF THE PLATFORMER RUMBLE IS:
Super Mario 64
Thanks to all of those who have voted in this Rumble. I will post again soon with updates regarding our next Rumble.

Okay. I thought this Rumble went rather well.
There's one thing I want to change however. I thought the new voting system was pretty good except it isolated the new voters a little bit more than I expected and more than I wanted to. Therefore I am reworking the system a bit. Instead of the person who has voted the most from the beginning of this thread setting the standard, it will only be based off of how many times you vote in the current rumble. Voters who participated in the last rumble however will still count for a little bit more.
So, now instead of Smokey's vote counting more than anybody elses, anybody who voted in the last rumble will count the same at the beginning of the new rumble. And throughout the rumble if you forget to vote on a battle then your vote will now be worth less. Voters who come in in the middle of a rumble will be worth a bit less but not near as much as the last rumble.
Okay, let me know what you guys think of this system and how you think the last rumble went. Let me know what changes you would like. Do you like me using the pictures in the rumble, or would you rather me just use text? Anything at all you would like me to change?
Also, what should be the category for the next rumble?
Rapture
03-01-2005, 06:19 PM
Well, put it this way, currently, you are doing a great job with this rumble.
You are giving informative, detailed discriptions on each game, with great pictures to go with them, as a result, I have no complaint to them.
I personally don't mind what system we use, the one we used was good and your new idea is fine too, but either way, its going to encourage more votes.
Lastly, I think Action/Adventure for the next rumble, with games like Zelda and the Oddworld series (maybe)? And everyone else?
KREAYSHAWN
03-01-2005, 07:22 PM
Yeah, I think the reworked system would be fairer. Also, the last rumble went pretty spiffingly well. No complaints, and I like the pictures.
Would Adventure games encompass Monkey Island, Broken Sword, Flight of the Amazon Queen, (even Zork?) etc. as well? Because if so, I think we should go with 32 games.

Zork is one of the first text-based adventure games.
Hm. It's a shame the adventure game genre is about dead now. I grew up on that stuff, so I'd love to see more of them. The scars left by the cancellation of Space Quest 7 have never fully healed.

Grim Fandango combines a unique story line and complicated puzzles to create an adventure different from any you have experienced before. Follow Manny through four years of mystery on his quest for true love and eternal salvation.
Kings Quest - This is the story of Sir Graham and his quest for three magical treasures that must be returned to the Kingdom of Daventry. Graham braves ogres, trolls, dragons and giants to win the treasures, restore them to Good King Edward, and claim his reward!

Zork - The Zork Trilogy is set in the ruins of an ancient empire lying far underground. You, a dauntless treasure-hunter, are venturing into this dangerous land in search of wealth and adventure. Many strange tales have been told of the fabulous treasure, exotic creatures, and diabolical puzzles in the Great Underground Empire
Space Quest - "Roger Wilco's out to clean up the universe, but he doesn't do windows. He's the chief sanitation engineer (aka Janitor) on the starship Arcada. His mission: to scrub dirty decks, replace burned-out light bulbs, and ..... to boldly go where no man has swept the floor! But while he was napping in the broom closet, his starship was hijacked by Sarien Stormtroopers. Now the top-secret Star Generator's been stolen. And if Roger doesn't get it back, the universe as we know it is TOAST.
