I've just been using the cover from my Mondo vinyl for the time being

The first track has about 30sec of music and 3:30min of silence ... o.O Also other tracks have parts with no sound at all. I think I'll just stick to the album version...

I think the first track is meant to have same effect as the film.
As in you can listen to this while watching the movie.

In the film there is silence before next musical cue.

Cutting out the silence would break filmic experience.
The only thing I can think of why silence is inluded.

Some hipster can say "silence is music".

There was probably plans to release an isolated score and this would be close to that kind of rip.

Beyond that speculation, who knows.

Rememeber that the music works both as sound effects and underscore. The first cue has 3 minutes with a low drone, it's not silent.

That's the other thing.
too low noise wouldn't be picked up by most people.

With regards to general sound, this film was highly experimental.
There was an article about the things they did and how the director felt that sfx was largely meant to be part of the overall sound of the film.
He wanted it to be like the music, why we're getting a music-less bluray.
It's messed up and convolutes the general concept of what is "music" and what is "sound effects".
