Here's a huge announcement for next year's game - please read this thread and reply! (Thread 177001)

Welcome to my fourth annual Final Fantasy Character knockout game! I have 135 characters (the same 135 characters from last three years), from Final Fantasy I to Final Fantasy XIV, and Final Fantasy Tactics all meshed in and spat out to form battles. There's 9 characters from each game. Who will be victorious?

Last year Vivi won the tournament, for the second consecutive year, and the first year the winner was Squall. But if we're including the total tally of votes for a character, all three years included, Zidane has accumulated the most votes. Who is going to win this year? Next to each character I've put down the game they appeared in, followed by position each character is in tally wise, and their votes tally from the result of both years as well. In Round 2 onwards I'll also post their total tally this year. This is all for information purposes, if you're a statistical nerd like me. If that doesn't make sense, here's what Vivi's name will look like:

(In case you're confused why Vivi is placed second, as I explained earlier, despite the fact that Vivi won last year Zidane has accumulated the most points in the history of this game.)

Also what game will be most favourable? The last two years Final Fantasy IX had the most votes, in terms of their characters totalling. FF6 won the first year. Are these games still the most popular? We'll soon find out!

If you haven't played any of my FF Knockout Games in the past, here are the rules:

The Rules
1. To vote, simply check who is going against who and reply with your favourite character in each roundup, preferably in a column format.
2. When a round finishes, if there are any tiebreakers, I'll post them up at the end. Tiebreakers are to be decided by listing them, and asking the question again about who is their favourite, the first response wins the tiebreak (eg. if the tiebreaker was Kefka vs Cloud, and the first poster to respond chooses Kefka, Kefka goes through to the next round).
3. Round 1 has 64 fights to it. Because 135 doesn't work into 64, there are 7 battles where there are three characters who will fight for the place in Round 2.
4. All these battles are chosen randomly, I've used a simple Excel spreadsheet and the "Rand" formula to help me make it fair and square. The only exceptions I've made is that there's no two characters from the same game going against eachother. I'm going to try and keep characters from the same games apart for as long as possible, although that may get difficult later.
5. I'll keep these rounds open for around a week, it depends on the reception and my business, this forum can go slowly sometimes so we'll see.
6. Because Round 1 has 64 battles, I'll split it into four sections (so you'll see 16 battles today, 16 in the next update etc). Round 2 will have 32 battles and I'll split that into two sections. Round 3 onwards will be posted in the complete forms.
7. Don't take this seriously, it's just a bit of fun. By all means debate why you love or hate certain characters, just be respectful of others feelings of those same characters.

I just want to point out Johnny that 'Zulvaan' and Gaius van Baelsar are one and the same - 'Zulvaan' was a fan name the FFXIV community called Gaius as early in version 1.0's Beta test (which had a bad barely-complete translation at that stage), as his real name wasn't known. Only much later was his official name actually revealed. So I think it might be best to remove the Zulvaan choice from this is as it's basically double voting for the Legatus of the XIVth Legion of the Garlean Empire. :p

Round 1 Roundup

Most Popular Game - Right. I'm not going to calculate this anymore, just so you all know. The reason is simply, that the format for the game going forward will change next year, and how it changes means that this won't be applicable. I'll announce the changes for next year's game when we finish this year's game. Just thought I'd let you know that this section won't apply going forward any more anyway.
Most Popular Characters - 5 characters lead the way so far, with 7 points, but obviously this will open out as the game goes forward. The five characters are Vivi and Freya (FF9), Vincent and Tifa (FF7) and Kimahri (FF10).
Most Popular Characters (All Time) - Zidane still leads and Vivi follows, but third place is now claimed by Beatrix, knocking Squall to fourth place. Squall has crashed out of the game at the first hurdle tragically, losing to Edgar!
Lowest Drop in All Time Rankings - Desch from FF3 didn't get a single point in this years game, so had nothing to add to the 10 points he acquired in the three years previous. He was ranked 78th but has currently dropped to 94th. He might drop further yet as the game goes on.
Highest Rise in All Time Rankings - In what seems like a rebellion against the "less favoured" games (good on them!) three characters have risen 19 ranking spaces. Niellefresne of FF14 and Malak and Dycedarg from FF Tactics have all gone up, Dycedarg got 5 points to add to his sole point in the previous 3 years, he's currently ranked 115th from 134th. Malak and Niellefresne got 4 points in the first round, they only got 3 points each in the previous three years and are ranked 108th, from 127th.

Most Popular Characters - Two-time winner takes the lead of the game having taken 12 points from the two rounds so far. We have 8 characters on 11 points though, in name, they are Kefka and Shadow from FF6, Tifa from FF7, Laguna from FF8, Beatrix and Dagger from FF9, Auron and Kimahri from FF10.

Most Popular Characters (All Time) - Zidane still leads, but Vivi is catching up, only two points seperate them now. Squall's shock drop out of the game at the first hurdle means not only did Beatrix jump above him into third place, Laguna now is in fourth place in the all time rankings. Squall has dropped two places, how many more will he drop?

Lowest Drop in All Time Rankings - Desch from FF3 continues to drop down the rankings, having got no points this year he started at 78th place but is currently ranking in 94th place, dropping 16 places in the process.

Highest Rise in All Time Rankings - Rafa from FF Tactics is doing a fine job of keeping the "Tactics" series relevant in this game. He's managed to rise 34 rankings so far - he was ranked 131st with 2 points before this year's game, now he is ranking 97th and has gained 7 points so far. Fingers crossed he keeps going!

Most Popular Characters - Vivi of FF9 and Laguna of FF8 take the lead, taking 18 points in the first three rounds. Following them in third place is Dagger of FF9 with 16 points.

Most Popular Characters (All Time) - The top 3 stays the same, although Vivi is only a point behind Zidane and you'd pretty much expect Vivi to overtake Zidane in the all time rankings if he wins the game for the third year in a row. Beatrix has her worst performance in the game to date, every year she's got to the Quarter Finals but misses the hurdle by two rounds this year. Laguna could overtake her if he keeps pushing forward in this game. Slightly further down Squall, who was ranked third place but got knocked out of the game straight away, has been overtaken by Laguna as well as Beatrix, and is now in fifth place.

Lowest Drop in All Time Rankings - Desch from FF3 continues to drop down the rankings, having got no points this year he started at 78th place but is currently ranking in 96th place, dropping 18 places in the process. This is the last time we'll see him drop any more rankings this year. Because only characters from the Top 51 in the rankings remain.

Highest Rise in All Time Rankings - Rafa from FF Tactics unfortunately got knocked out of the game now but his fantastic run saw him go up 41 places in the rankings. He started in 131st place only taking 2 points from the first three games but managed to get 9 points this year. He's now got 11 points and is in 90th place.

Most Popular Characters - Laguna takes the lead in the game having got 24 votes in the first four rounds. Vivi is one step behind with 23 votes, and in joint third place is Zidane and Auron with 21 votes. With The Semi Finals coming up this will be the last time I talk about these statistics as they start to become irrelevant.

Most Popular Characters (All Time) - Zidane is still first, Vivi is still second, but Laguna now lies in third place in the overall rankings, having overtook both Beatrix and Squall who have had very disappointing campaigns this year. Zidane has 107 points, Vivi has 105 points and now Laguna has 96 points. Beatrix is now fourth having got 93 points and Auron may overtake her, as he is now in fifth place one point behind her.

Lowest Drop in All Time Rankings - Desch has dropped the lowest in the ranks, as stated in the last round. I can't see it changing, so unless it does I'll mention it. Desch dropped 18 rankings, he got no points in this years game, adding nothing to the 10 points he got in the previous three games.

Highest Rise in All Time Rankings - Like Desch above, nothing has changed with the highest rise in the rankings either. Rafa rose the highest in the ranks, who rose 41 rankings, adding 9 points to the 2 he got the previous three years. If it changes I'll mention it.

The Quarter Finalists - Here's a list of the quarter finalists and some interesting stats on them:

Auron - Is now a four time Quarter Finalist. Only one of two characters to get this honour. However every time he has got to this stage he has been knocked out. Can he make it to his first semi final?

Dagger - Her second Quarter Final, having got there two years ago. That was her best placement. Can she get her first semi final appearance?

Gilgamesh - His first Quarter Final appearance, also the first time an FF5 character has got this far. His best placement was 31st place, that was last year. How far can he go, or is this the end of the road?

Laguna - This is Laguna's third Quarter Final appearance, and that is also in a row. Despite this, and the fact that he currently ranks third in the all time rankings, he's never made the semi finals. Can this be the year?

Lulu - Lulu is the lowest ranked character left so she's having a great run. This is her first Quarter Final appearance, her previous best being 23rd place two years ago. Can she represent FF10 to the semi finals?

Terra - Three of the eight characters in the Quarter Final are female, which is impressive considering the popularity of the males in FF games. This is also Terra's first Quarter Final appearance, but has come close twice before, finishing 9th one year and 10th another year. Can she leapfrog everyone to the semis?

Vivi - This fella needs no introduction, he may have only finished 21st in his first year but has won the whole thing two years in a row. Semi finals are a piece of cake in that case right? Or is that not so? You decide!

Zidane - Auron is a four time Quarter Finalist, and Zidane is another. These two characters are the only people that can say that they've finished in the Top 8 every year. Zidane finished 5th, then 3rd, then 2nd last year. Can he make it all the way this year? Or does he go backwards from runner up position from last year?

Just a few facts:

1) Zidane is knocked out! So Zidane, the all-time leading point scorer reaches the Quarter Finals. Vivi is only one point behind him. Can Vivi with his two titles finally be called the all-time leading votes winner?

2) Auron being knocked out also confirms him as the only player to get to four out of four Quarter Finals and never to be a Semi Finalist. Quite a statistic.

3) Three of the four Semi Finalists have never made it this far in the tournament. Good luck to them all!

4) Gilgamesh of FF5 and Lula of FF10 also get their games to their first Semi Final placements. Never before has a character from those games got this far. Great news for purists wanting other games to get votes in this knockout tournament!

I've loved Gilgamesh's underdog run this year, it's been fantastic. I'd never have pinned him down as a finalist for this game and it's nice to see other characters from other games of the series knocking some of the "favourites" out.

Statistics After the Fourth Annual FF Character Knockout Game

So the biggest stat naturally is that Vivi has now won three years in a row. It seems to be annoying some people which I understand, but all people have to do is NOT vote for Vivi! There will be a poll about this coming up in a thread soon.
Vivi has now climbed to the top of the rankings as well. There has been a re-jig in the rankings in a few ways, I'll post the final rankings at the end of this post. Vivi is also the only character to get to three semi finals AND three finals.
Gilgamesh was the first character from Final Fantasy V to get to the final.
Auron and Zidane have got to the quarter finals for every one of the four years of this contest. That being said Auron has NEVER been a semi finalist.
Laguna has improved his rank year upon year. 4 years ago he got to 9th place, then 3 years ago he got to 8th place, then he placed 5th last year and this year he got to 3rd. Will he take another leap forward next year?
Other characters who have improved each year are Sarah from FF1, Leo from FF6, Tifa from FF7, Zeid from FF11, Thancred, Papalymo and Niellefresne from FF14 and Rafa and Malak from FFTactics.
Funnily enough despite Sarah doing "better" each year, she's still not done good enough to stay in the game. She only took two votes in her four years, both of those votes coming this year.
Characters who have done worse year after year each year are The Emperor from FF2, Doga from FF3, Exdeath and Bartz from FF5, Locke from FF6, Vincent and Sephiroth from FF7, Rikku from FF10 and Fang from FF13.
Gordon and The Emperor are the highest ranked players not to register a single vote this year. They were 65th place, and have dropped now to 79th.
Squall from Final Fantasy VIII is the highest ranked player not to get to the second round. He registered a single vote and was ranked 3rd place. He's now dropped to 6th.
Rafa from Final Fantasy Tactics, as stated previously, has climbed the rankings the most this year. He was ranked 131st with 2 points before the start of this game. He accumulated 9 votes this year, and climbed to 90th place, climbing a total of 41 places.
Desch from Final Fantasy III has dropped the lowest this year. He was 78th place and had a total of 10 points, but this year he didn't register a single vote, and dropped to 90th place, dropping a total of 18 places in the process.
Five characters haven't registered a single vote in the last two years. They are The Emperor from FF2, Desch, Unei and Doga from FF3, and Bartz from FF5. The last two characters are being removed from this game as of next year as a consequence.
In fact - Desch from FF3 has not registered a single vote in the last three years. Why isn't he being removed from the game? Because in the first year he did a great job in accumulating 10 points.
This year we had a total of 809 votes, so thank you all for that. It's actually an increase from last year, where we had a total of 734, but we're aways from topping the first time we did this game, where we had 1028 votes that year.
