Holy crap have I really done this game for the fifth year running? That's pretty insane! Many thanks to everyone who has took part in the game over the last four years, without you we wouldn't have hit this milestone! :)

Welcome to my fifth annual Final Fantasy Character knockout game! I have 134 characters, from Final Fantasy I to Final Fantasy XIV, and Final Fantasy Tactics all meshed in and spat out to form battles. Who will be victorious?

The last four years had the same characters with no changes. This year it's different. I removed a selection of characters from the original 135 that barely got any votes over the course of the last four years, and replaced them with new ones. For more information on who was replaced and why, click here (Thread 178727).

Vivi from Final Fantasy 9 has won three out of the last four years, so it was decided that Vivi would take the year off. Going forward, the "winner" from each year will follow this rule, so whoever wins this year won't be taking part next year. This is why there will be 134 characters in the game going forward. Also because we have an unbalanced selection of characters from the games, we will no longer do a popularity contest with the games.

So with Vivi out, who is going to win this year? Next to each character I've put down the game they appeared in, followed by position each character is in tally wise, and their votes tally from the result of both years as well. In Round 2 onwards I'll also post their total tally this year. This is all for information purposes, if you're a statistical nerd like me. If that doesn't make sense, here's what Vivi's name would look like, if he were playing this year:

Because we have 15 new characters I'll highlight these, and naturally they're all ranked lowest because they're brand new to the game, but I'm sure some of them will catch up in no time!

If you haven't played any of my FF Knockout Games in the past, here are the rules:

The Rules
1. To vote, simply check who is going against who and reply with your favourite character in each roundup, preferably in a column format.
2. When a round finishes, if there are any tiebreakers, I'll post them up at the end. Tiebreakers are to be decided by listing them, and asking the question again about who is their favourite, the first response wins the tiebreak (eg. if the tiebreaker was Kefka vs Cloud, and the first poster to respond chooses Kefka, Kefka goes through to the next round).
3. Round 1 has 64 fights to it. Because 134 doesn't work into 64, there are 6 battles where there are three characters who will fight for the place in Round 2.
4. All these battles are chosen randomly, I've used a simple Excel spreadsheet and the "Rand" formula to help me make it fair and square. The only exceptions I've made is that there's no two characters from the same game going against eachother. I'm going to try and keep characters from the same games apart for as long as possible, although that may get difficult later.
5. I'll keep these rounds open for around a week before posting the next one.
6. Because Round 1 has 64 battles, I'll split it into four sections (so you'll see 16 battles today, 16 in the next update etc). Round 2 will have 32 battles and I'll split that into two sections. Round 3 onwards will be posted in the complete forms.
7. Don't take this seriously, it's just a bit of fun. By all means debate why you love or hate certain characters, just be respectful of others feelings of those same characters.

Round 1 Roundup

Most Popular Characters - 9 characters lead the way so far, with 7 points, but obviously this will open out as the game goes forward. I'll list them in Round 2 onwards due to how many people "lead" at the moment.
Most Popular Characters (All Time) - It's inevitable that unless Zidane has a shocker this year, that he'll over take Vivi in the points department this year, due to Vivi's absense in the game. But at the moment the Top 3 remains the same; Vivi, then Zidane, then Laguna. In terms of a bit lower down, Kefka has just overtaken Kuja and is now in 8th place in the all time rankings.
Lowest Drop in All Time Rankings - Kraken (FF1) and Red XIII (FF7) are the only newcomers that didn't get a single point in this year's game, so they are now ranked rock bottom at 134th place each, dropping 13 places each. However you could make a stronger arguement that the lowest drop in the all time rankings goes to Krile (FF5), after not getting a single point on board this year she's also dropped 13 places, from 53rd to 66th place.
Highest Rise in All Time Rankings - Shadow Lord of FF11 and Djinn of FF3 have both climbed 14 places each, after both performing far better this year than most years. Shadow Lord is now ranked 91st place, and Djinn is ranked 105th.
Centenarians - Auron (FF10) becomes the fourth character to reach the 100 point tally mark, after Vivi (FF9), Zidane (FF9) and Laguna (FF8).
"Biggest Upsets" - Probably the biggest "upset" of the Round has to go to Rosa (FF4), who was ranked 73rd, who has knocked out Kuja (FF9) who was ranked 8th. Another upset is Barret (FF7) who was ranked 27th being knocked out by newcomer Alma (FF Tactics). Yuna (FF10) is the highest ranked character to not get a single point on the board this year, she was ranked 35th and lost to Cecil (FF4).

Most Popular Characters - Three characters are now leading the way with 13 points each, they are Kefka and Setzer from FF6, and, surprisingly, Ramza from FF Tactics.
Most Popular Characters (All Time) - Well I said in the last round if Zidane has a "shocker" then he won't overtake Vivi in the points and the news is, that arguably the favourite in the game, Zidane is OUT of the game at the second round! Also being knocked out is Laguna, who narrowly lost to Beatrix in a 3rd vs 5th place battle. Auron and Beatrix are the highest ranked characters left in the game, but have some way to catching up to and overtaking Vivi due to the overall points difference. Vivi still has 119 points, where as Auron now has 106, and Beatrix has joined the Centenarians this round and has 101 points.
Lowest Drop in All Time Rankings - Krile from FF5 dropped the lowest in the rankings this year as explained earlier, but it seems due to the change in the rankings as time goes on Desch from FF3 and Matoya from FF1 join her and currently also drop 18 places each.
Highest Rise in All Time Rankings - No surprising really that with maximum points thus far Ramza from FF Tactics has climbed the highest, he was ranked 79th at the start of this years game and currently sits in 55th place. His 13 points so far this year are almost half his entire tally of 27!
Centenarians - As mentioned earlier Beatrix is the fifth character to hit 100 points total. Next in line, if he continues to gather points, is Squall from FF8 who has 92 points at the moment.
"Biggest Upsets" - The biggest upset of the round has to go to Lenna from FF5 beating Zidane from FF9. It may have been a tiebreaker that knocked him out, but for a character that got into The Quarter Finals every single year to get knocked out at Round 2 by a character ranked 71 places lower than him, it's quite a shock!

There's only one newcomer character left and that's Yang from FF4! Let's see how far he can get!

Most Popular Characters - Four characters are now leading the way, Kefka (FF6), Ramza (Tactics) and Setzer (FF6) are now being joined by Auron (FF10) and all have 17 points.
Most Popular Characters (All Time) - Auron has now overtaken Laguna and is now the third most popular character of all time, and as he's the highest ranked character remaining in the game he's arguably the favourite. If he indeed does win this year's game I'd be certain he'd overtake both Vivi and Zidane in the rankings. He has 111 points while Zidane accumulated 118, and Vivi still leads with 119.
Highest Rise in All Time Rankings - Ramza continues to do fantastic this year and has now risen 30 places in the rankings - from 79th to 49th! He's also more than doubled his total score as hes gone from 14 points to 31!
Centenarians - Squall has been eliminated from the game so can't turn into a Centenarian this year. While Terra is then next in line, she has 80 points and is unlikely to accumualate 20 more... unless she wins the whole game this year.
"Biggest Upsets" - Not really much room for big "upsets" anymore but 25th placed Tifa beating 6th placed Squall is probably the pick of the bunch.

Yang was close but no cigar in getting to the fourth round, what a run! So now we have no new characters remaining.

Also, we only have two characters left that have finished in the Top 3 before, they are Shadow who came third in 2011, and Gilgamesh who came second last year!

Round 4 Roundup

Most Popular Characters - Edgar of FF6 has now broken out in front with 22 points thus far. It's his highest votes tally of the five years we've been doing the game, and this is his first Quarter Final appearance. Kefka also of FF6 follows with 21 points and Auron of FF10 has 20.
Most Popular Characters (All Time) - No change at the top. I'll stop talking about this going forward unless anything note worthy happens, but will reveal the new rankings at the end of the game as always.
Highest Rise in All Time Rankings - This has also now pretty much been confirmed that Ramza has risen higher than anyone else, he may have been knocked out but he rose 30 rankings in the end - a massive year for him!
Centenarians - Another thing that's not going to be note worthy unless Terra accumulates a huge amount of points.
"Biggest Upsets" - No upsets in this round, I think that will be the last of them too.

The 8 Quarter Finalists are all ranked within the Top 25 we have no major surprise entrants this year. We do however have FIVE characters from FF6 - unprecedented at this point in the competition level I believe! So we will have only the third battle between two characters from the same game - the first and second were both two years ago when Vivi went up against Beatrix in the Semi Finals, and then Vivi went up against Zidane in the Final - all three characters from FF9. This is the first battle between two FF6 characters.

This is the point in the competition where I reveal some stats about who's left in the game so let's do this:

Auron - He is the only character that has gotten to the Quarter Final stage EVERY year. Every one. Zidane would have been here with him if he wasn't a surprise knockout earlier in this year's game. So Auron holds the record alone now.

Cid (FF7) - This is Cid's first Quarter Final. He's come close before three times but now, he finally has his cigar. Ahem.

Edgar - He too is in his first Quarter Final. The ladies man also leads the way with the most points thus far in the game.

Kefka - Despite never being ranked lower than 23rd in a single year of competition, this too is Kefka's first Quarter Final.

Kimahri - You guessed it, another first time Quarter Finalist. The lack of success with FF9 characters this year seems to have made a lot of room for these guys huh?

Locke - Yes, another first time Quarter Finalist. Seriously, while writing this I never knew we had so many!

Shadow - Here we go! Shadow finished third in the first year of this game but has never done as well since. It's actually only his second Quarter Final appearance, since that first one back four years ago.

Terra - The only female remaining in the game, this is her second Quarter Final appearance after popping her cherry last year. She did get knocked out at this stage last year though. Can she get to the Semi's for the first time? She is also the second highest ranked character in the all time rankings in seventh place.

A few notes (no big statistics thing this time round sorry):

- Auron (FF10) has now equalled Zidane (FF9) in the total points tally - they're both now set at 118 points, both one behind Vivi on 119! Auron will take over the all-time rankings leaderboard if he gets to the final :)
- Despite Auron's all-time rankings position this is his first ever Semi Final!
- In fact none of these characters have gotten this far before so we'll be ranking a new Top 4 this year!
- Three Semi Finalists are from FF6! The only time we've had three Semi Finalists from the same game was two years ago when we had three characters from FF9 :)

Statistics after the Fifth Annual Final Fantasy Character Knockout Game


Kefka becomes the third character to win this annual game and is the first character from FF6 to do so.
Squall from FF8 won the first year... then Vivi from FF9 won three years in a row.
Because Vivi didn't take part this year, and with Zidane and Laguna having their worst performances to date, Auron has now climbed to the top of the rankings from fourth place.
But with the new ruling, the winner takes a year off so... Vivi returns next year while Kefka doesn't take part.
Auron is the first character from FF10 to get to the final.
Auron is the only character to get to the Quarter Final every single year.
Sephiroth from FF7 finished 2nd in his first year but has gotten worse every year! He's gone from 2nd to 8th, to 10th, to 19th and now he'll be ranked 29th!
Rikku from FF10 has also done worse year upon year, she's gone from 17th to 19th, to 29th, last year she was 39th and now she'll rank 42nd.
Another one is Exdeath from FF5, who ranked 32nd in the first year, then 37th, then 49th, last year he ranked 60th and now he's going to be ranked 72nd!
Vivi aside, the highest ranked character to note register a single vote this year was Yuna from FF10. She's only dropped four places though from 35th to 39th.
Kuja from FF9 was the highest ranked character to get knocked out of the first round, he's now dropped from 8th to 16th.
As previously stated Ramza from FF Tactics had the best game in terms of being the highest climber in the rankings, he was ranked 79th place with 14 points, but accumulated 17 points this year and rose 30 places in the rankings as a result, to 49th place.
Krile from FF5 has dropped the lowest in the rankings, she was ranked 53rd place with 22 points but after not getting a single point, has dropped down 17 places to 70th.
Desch from FF3 hasn't got a single point in the last three years of the game!
