Blank sound brsars wouldn't work even if you were able to make them - as the sequenced songs are in there too. Is it really impossible to turn sound effects off in the game's settings? Anyway, thanks for the help so far, I'll use your list to combine the tracks correctly. :)
Everyone, also check out !!!!!'s rip, it is really an awesome one.
@Bar: Two things:
1. You're welcome, but know that this list is not complete. The other songs are ones I've not yet heard.
2. It wouldn't be necessary to make the whole .brsars blank. I could probably extract all the files that are not .rbnk and .rseq, then create a bunch of blank files and inject them back into the .brsar.
No, make that three things total
3. Could you please link me to the newest version of VGMToolbox?

I learned how to extract the audio files, convert them to .wav and extracted the .thp files for the extra songs that are in the videos, as well.
What videos?
@logan28469: I know the list isn't complete yet, but it's a good start and I can already use it for the first few multi-channel tracks. :)
@DGM09: You're right, it isn't as simple as just downmixing the tracks. Looks like I'll have to spend some time deciphering how the game does this before I do anything.
I don't know, if it really is that hard, maybe we're better off getting a cheat and recording all the variations like we'll have to do for the sequenced music.

@Bar: Well, Bar, just do some trial and error using the same track until it sounds best. I'd like to try, too, so may I ask that you please give me FLACs of just the three 0D69624FF595784723DE8035A322931F tracks so I can see what I can do? I'll also give you a link to the thread where Prime Blue figured out how to properly mix the files in TP and the Symphonic Legends rip once I find it again. There is also a program you could use called mp3surround which I'll link here, and it is supposed to do something(I'm not sure if it does what we want, though). Also, I want to ask why didn't I hear the back-channel instruments(or whatever you want to call them) when I played the multichannel FLACs through my speaker system? OH MY GOD! Is there a lightbulb smiley? I just got a great idea! If all the variations are already split by channel, couldn't you just unplug the back speakers for one variation, unplug a different combination for a different variation, etc, and just record that? I honestly have no idea, but maybe you do. Actually, that doesn't sound like it'll work, now, but I'm leaving it in my post in case it springs forth a better idea.
About the cheats and recording - We may still need to run Dolphin for this, though. Isn't there a Linux emulator? Also, from what I'm hearing, a File Replacement Code may not work on games that don't have SD-reading functionality. I know that using Wii Line-in may (but likely won't) cause the same thing as the downmixing(but will cause the result files to be low-dB, whence amplification would cause distortion), and setting the Wii to Stereo may not fix the problem(as Skyward Sword does not actually have a Stereo mode). What I'm going to try doing is edit the .brsar, mod my Wii again(the SS update removed my mods), and run the edited .iso. The only thing I need is a big enough flash drive. Luckily, since the data is not read-only, rial and error is possible. I highly recommend someone with the proper equipment to do this. Soft-modding the Wii requires a good game (like Brawl) and about three minutes, unless you plan on backing stuff up. After all, the Wii has to be modded for the cheats to work in the first place.

I managed to mod the brsar to mute most sound effects. Most sound effects and sequenced files are all played with the RSEQ chunks inside the brsar. If you change all data of the DATA chunk inside the RSEQ chunk to 0xFF that RSEQ will not play.
I made a program that looks for all RSEQ files and shows the label and asks if you want to mute it. Still took me quite some time, since the the brsar is more than 500mb. I played the game with the modified brsar and while it was still playing a few ambient sounds in a few regions and froze once it works!
I'm using the Riivolution app and the Riifs server to stream it from my pc. The good thing about it is that I also see which file is being accessed, so I can find the appropriate stream played. I'm still playing the game(just entered the 3rd dungeon), so I'm not done yet.

Wow, slippyToad, I literally was just going to mention you. Can you please grab this stuff in lossless? I 'm not all that surprised that you figured this out, because I know you mad the best SMG rips, so you know what you're doing. But this... I love you forever! When you get all of it ripped, are you going to have all of the variations? Ansd will it be in FLAC like your Super Mario Galaxy rips? If you plan on making a full rip of everything in the game in FLAC(including all of the sequenced stuff, I could definitely wait! Knowing that my goal will be reached, even if by someone else entirely, is more satisfying than anything else in the world. Your Mario Galaxy rips are the best gamerips(even better than Prime Blue's TP) and are ones that I listen to almost everyday through the same speakers that I bought just to play Skywars Sword in 5.1. I didn't want to compare my favorite rippers in public, but when I earlier said that Bar had moved to second place on my Favorite Rippers List, I didn't mention who was in first. Well, you're first. This is actually why I came to ask you firstwhen I was looking to see if I could find a good ripper for Skyward Sword. If you ever think of any way I could repay you, please let me know. And repaying is necessary.
Now that I've expressed my grattitude, I'd like to say some things: 1. Feel free to use any files from here, as they may reatly help you out, especially the FLACs that are in stereo, unless that seems like it would make your job more confusing.
2. I don't like to be rushed in Zelda games. I highly recommend that you just take your time. I know that playing a game and simultaneously recording the music takes a LOT longer than it would to normally play the game, but we both know that there are less and less new songs as you get further into the game and the same ones play in many new areas.
3. I don't know if you plan on getting all of the variations, but be carefull in certain boss fights that have that "vulnerable" part of the song. Also note that many songs sound nearly identical to others, but have many completely different versions(like Ghirahim's theme)
4. This music is extremely awesome and since it is Zelda and Mahito Yokota at the same time, I may be more overenthused than ever before in my life, as this is the best music I've ever heard(in and out of games). You may get an extremely high amount of gratitude from me.
5. How the hell are you downmixing this(or whatever you're doing)? If you'd rather not answer that, that's fine.
As I said before, slippy, I'm more than happy to just wait for the whole thing, but I'm not speaking for everyone. I'm sure other people would LOVE to hear the sequenced music like the Bazaar, so if you uploaded that, a lot of people would be happy. This should take you a while, but I can safely say that this will beat all other rips combined. Hopefully Nintendo stops using this file structure and formats for good.
Now, remember everyone: give slippyToad some reputation points!
And I'm just going to continue working with Bar until you're done. That is, if Bar still wants to. I've learned a LOT so far.

I'm interested in the having the Bazaar songs in lossless of course. And if you can slippytoad, could you post all of the sequences before you complete your rip, after you get them? I would be grateful for that alone. Also do the tracks fade in as you record them or can you get them in one volume? Thank you for your hard work in return.

Wait are you asking slippy Toad for the actual files? I think that would be awesome. I'm going to be honest I don't actually know what Riivolution does, but now that I think about it, it's probably an app that automatically extracts the whole sample as soon as it is accessed, huh? If so, that is basically a non-Windows version of the 3D Ripper DX equivalent that I previously spoke of. If that's the same concept, that'd likely work for every game, unless this rips the sequenced stuff only. GOOD LUCK, slippyToad!!!
Yeah the sequences after they're ripped due to the RSEQs by themselves being virtually useless.
Then yes, I agree!

ONE MORE THING, slippyToad: Judging by the fact that there are more boss themes than actual boss fights, I'm almost certain that there are different versions of these songs in Hero Mode(and possibly some other songs, too). Either that, or they're in the mode where you challenge all of the bosses.
I'm going to play Skyward Sword now.

So, I don't know if anyone caught this yet or if it is helpful at all, but there are some minor (I guess) differences between the US and PAL/JAP/KOR versions of the game regarding the sound.
WZSound.brsar is identical for PAL/JAP/KOR, but the US file differs. I don't know to what extent though - the extractable files (via ripping_mama01) are identical for all four. The filesize is slightly different, too.
1E20D864A94A866D70090559E6D0CD2A and 4198EC4D6C70084417657C6DC4503D41 are also identical for PAL/JAP/KOR, but the US versions differ again.
1E20D864A94A866D70090559E6D0CD2A misses the intro for the second channel-pair in the US version (which seems identical with the intro of the first channel-pair).
4198EC4D6C70084417657C6DC4503D41 is shorter in duration in the US version (the first channel-pair is extended for PAL/JAP/KOR).
I've uploaded those two here (
http://anonym.to/?http://www.multiupload.com/Y389108AUM) in both variants if anyone's interested. Didn't upload the WZSounds since they're quite big for my connection, but I can do that too if that does something good.
Other than that, the music seems to be the same. All other streams, the demos and all THPs are identical.
Also, amazing work so far! I'm so looking forward to the finished thing. I'd really like to help out in some way, but everything here seems too technical for me... not sure if I can do anything. I'd gladly replay it (even several times) though, currently finishing my second 100% run (in hero mode this time).

Kevin04, thank you for this, and if I remember correctly, it was you who posted Prime Blue's TP FLAC rip here on FFS? Thank you for that, too. Now slippyToad, since I now know what Riivolution does, you could rip these alternate US files by just using them with the game through Riivolution, right? It's only two files, so it shouldn't be a hassle. As for the nig .brsar, you could probably just see if you could narrow the possible differences between regions' files by excluding the sfx from the .brsar filesize(because I bet the sequences are the same but the sfx differ)
@Bar: I am in the US and have the US ISO. Have you been using the files from the US ISO, or the others?

You can rip those two files without Riivolution, they're brstm files just like the ones I've ripped.
And yes I'm using the US version as well, though I'll download the PAL version as well to get a more complete version.
I'm doing my best to find out how the game stores volume/3D sound position data at the moment. If I find that out I won't have too much trouble getting the right volume in the mixdown.
Also, good luck, slippyToad! I'm excited for you getting the sequenced music too. Well done! :D
EDIT -> I can get the sequenced tracks in midi format as well now, but that's not helping me any further. :/
Are you doing this through reverse engineering or simply by listening?
I'm not knowledgeable enough to actually view the algorithms and code themselves, but there's a way to test this that could help. If you're unable to actually verify directly and exactly how the Wii handles the audio files, I can try messing around with them.
I was thinking that if you were to replace the .brstm files in the original .iso with music of your choice, this wouldn't be that much trouble to figure out. For example, add a few simple sounds in the different channels of a song (Skyloft's is good for this) and see what plays. Just needs simple notes to figure out. It should be easy to identify what channel plays and why and also the dB changes.
Edit: And this would also help to verify where exactly each variation plays, since you could just put a silly tune in one of the variations and see where it changes in-game.
That's right, that would help a lot! Great idea.
I think I found a way to get the sequenced sounds easily by the way. I'm going to try it out right now. :)
EDIT -> Yes, it works! sequenced music can be converted to midi with rseq2mid and later played with the data from the bnk file. Some (only some of them) files don't seem to convert that easily though... hmm...

Hi,
now I have read almost the whole thread. But I dont know how can I extract the Sounds/Music from the sound\wzs Hash-Files?
With ripping_mama and vgmstream you can extract the sounds from brsar and convert the rwav to wav that can play every mplayer.
But how can I play the wzs sounds like:
0A2EB53FB4A43869EF8892CA146BBDF4 or 0D22F5D87B7F70B2E2EBAC1462769F43 or 0D69624FF595784723DE8035A322931F etc.
What Programm can do this?
I would be very happy if you can help me.

Those files are the actual audiostreams, just add the .brstm extension to their filenames, then they should be playable by any player supporting vgmstream (e.g. by foobar2000 and the vgmstream component). Or, you can just convert them to wav with vgmstream.

Yeah, thank you very much Kevin04. lol I had so long sought after and now it was so easy/simply. ^^ I did not think that the players go after the extension. I thought the file contents were scanned. Now its play with XMPlay (Player) with vgm plugin.

I know. What I meant was: Regardless who does the ripping, can I do the editing? I am knowledgeable on how. After all, I have ripped most of the game Wii Music.
I like how everyone that's still in this discussion knows what they're talking about, even the new users.
I'm still not sure what the differences in the .brsars is. I originally guessed it was Fi's speech, as her speech is an actual cryptogram, but you can tell by the ordering of the words that it is a cipher of Japanese. I am noticing this in the US version, BTW.

i'm still playing the game. It's without a doubt the biggest Zelda game i've played. I'm now in the sandship. Seems every location in the Lanayru Sand Sea uses a different brstm, but they sound the same and all of them have more than 2 channels. Have to check them out all manually to avoid removing songs that I thought are duplicates.
I'll post some recordings of sequenced songs first, since most people want these. Luckily the game has very few sequenced songs. I have a few fanfares, the bazaar song and the minecart in Shipyard. Only one I missed during gameplay was the lizalfos mini-boss in the earth temple. Thought it was just a streamed song, until i checked riivolution which streams were loaded and saw there were none. I thought the bamboo cutting mini-game is sequenced too.
I still miss a few variations of stream + sequenced song, but all of them can be redone. Scaldera's critical variation also plays during Tantalus, which I still need to defeat.

It's the harp songs(without Fi singing though, Fi's voice is a SFX), the channel intro, the bazaar songs, many fanfares(except Solution #2 and Fortune Told fanfare) and the minecart ride.
I only uploaded the ripped rwav's and the recorded sequences. They are not tagged yet and I haven't double checked them(i can remember one fanfare still had sound effects with it).
Great work, everyone! I've read this thread through its entirety, and while I don't understand the great majority of all the technical jargon (I don't even know what the heck "FLAC" means), I'm really excited about this game's soundtrack in its final form once Bar, Slippy, !!!!, and numerous others are done. It reminds me of the good old days of Prime Blue's Twilight Princess rip and that thread at Gaming Force.
As I played through the game (Skyward Sword), the thought that kept occurring to me every time the music changed based on what I was doing was, "Wow, I bet this would be a pain to rip the music from." =P
Anyway, I think in the interest of my hard drive's space capacity, I should hold off on downloading anything until the full rip is complete?

I've been hearing this a lot lately. All you have to do to help is own the game and post here which variations exist for each song in the game. That way, Bar can mix it properly. I'm going to do just that with the songs that I am 100% sure on only. @Bar: Look forward to a more extensive list from me this week, and make sure to check my posts as of this one, as I'll be editing them with more as opposed to making new posts each time. NOTE: I'll be posting track names or descriptions in bold red from now on, and whenever we come to a song that has have the normal version without instrument tracks, a separate version for each instrument, and a version with all instruments(like the 0D69624FF595784723DE8035A322931F we talked about), I will call that a full combo. If you include the normal version, that song has 4 variations, so this is how I'm going to write it:
0D69624FF595784723DE8035A322931F (full combo) 4 vars.
Now I start listing what I know: (Hopefully, this mp3 archive has ALL of the songs and instrument tracks and variations, right? Because if not, I'll probably miss a lot, as I am going to look at each song and navigate it in the game.)
0D69624FF595784723DE8035A322931F (full combo) 4 vars.
Sorry I didn't reply earlier. A relative dear to me died drowning on a lake and been taking care of that. I'll see if I can list any variations.

From listening to the preliminary rips, I thought I was imagining things, but the Treasure Chest open and Main Item Catch Fanfares sounded a bit distorted and/or muffled when I listened to them. Did something go wrong or is that how they sound in the game?

Hey, you don't need to apologize, especially when it's something like that. When I originally said

1. was not directing the statement directly to you, but to everyone, especially those before yours that seemed repetitive
2. had no intention of making anyone sound lazy (because when I read that post of mine just now, it sounded like I did have that intention)
However, I feel bad, and thus, I'm sorry (which is why I'm saying all of this).
Still, there is no need for you to apologize, especially in your situation. Thank you very much for still wanting to help! Good luck!

Just a note but I believe there are two more variations of the battle theme: An minor alternate version when you fight in Eldin Volcano and one with digital-like SFX when you fight the Armos in Lanaryu. I'm not sure if there are more then that as of yet.

I got the idea from two things 1) !!!!!!'s version of the Rip basically combines all the songs with "variations" into one track, which is what I have seen to be the case on Nintendo-published OSTs. Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 did this IIRC. 2) Given how the tracks seemed like they were missing pieces of the intro in the "main" theme, I felt it would be fitting to combine them into a suite.
Once you guys gather all the tracks and resources, I too would like to produce my rip—one using ProTools. Is that fine?

What I meant was that the main theme had something of an intro before the piece began (the bongo drums solo), whereas the other versions did not. Which is why I decided to make it a medley.

Actually, there is one more variation missing and it will need to be recorded for every battle theme variation (Approaching, Fighting, Armos, Inside Volcano). The missing variation is the "life critical" variation that plays when Link reaches three hearts or less. I'm actually not sure if there is a "life critical" variation for the "approaching" part of the battle theme so I would need someone to check on that. I've been too busy to play the game for a while. It would be great if somebody could look into recording these.

slippyToad will likely rip that properly, but we'll see! You guys are really finding a lot!
@Bar: I should be able to greatly extend that list soon!
As for the post directly preceding mine, I couldn't oppose you more. I honestly think that you're alone on that opinion. It's nice to hear amazing orchestral music that is mostly new songs, as opposed to the same ones that have already appeared in another 5 games or more.

Here's some info I've noticed. It's really going to give a huge headache to the rip completionists working on this.
I've found that in-game, the harp is programmed to play the chords to any bgm that plays.
...
...every...
...single...
...bgm...
Even the boss encounters. :P
For completionists out there who want every variation possible, this fact will probably make you want to tear your hair out. :/
I'm sure there are a few BGM that don't feature this (FE, The Sky [you can't play the harp while flying as far as I know])
I've found it fun to strum the harp while playing through the game and I do wish that someone would be able to figure out how to create variations to include the harp strumming with the BGM but that is a HUGE undertaking.
Fun fact: Even the regular battle theme has harp chords. Try it out. :3

Yeah, I know. I mentioned this to Prime Blue in that PM about 25 days ago. The reasons I never mentioned it here are:
1. It is SFX, even though it is music, and exists in nearly any part of the game. It would be cool to have, but I don't think it's all that necessary. It would probably be better off as a separate track, if anything. And this opinion is coming from an obsessive completionist who cares about the Zelda series more than his own life.
2. Mention of this would likely cause many people to give up.
Now, slippyToad's method would make ripping this fairly easy, but I'm still not going to ask for it. Hey slippy, can I have a copy of the modified .brsar? I would actually be willing to rip these harp variations myself.

So does this mean the sequences to be released in FLAC are forever lost also meaning a lack of a complete lossless rip? I mean I could just convert the remaining MP3 sequences slippyToad released to FLAC but that's not in my best interest. Is there anyone who can rip these tracks?
mmmmmmm
12-11-2011, 04:18 PM
I believe that some of the "Boss Theme"s, the ones highlighted in red, are actually the Imprisoned Battles. I was listening to them earlier today and I heard Groose's Theme in the background. The only time Groose aides you in a battle is in the Imprisoned fights.

Give slippy some time. It was the EXACT same situation with SMG. It takes a lot longer to upload FLACs, so just wait and see.
EDIT: Please, nobody else send slippy a PM on the matter. I have just sent him my own, with a list of things whose presence in the rip was unsure to me. I then asked that if anything is going to be left out, that he would please let me know what was. I also said that I apologize for bugging him if he's not actually done yet.
As for getting codes from WiiRD, they've just completely ignored my posts.

So, I was right, people: slippyToad's MP3 upload is yet another version of his preliminary rip (errors are still present), and slippy does intend on upping a complete FLAC version when it's all fixed and complete, it would just take a lot of time, bandwidth, and portion of his allowed upload limit per month(from his ISP) to keep uploading the rip. So please wait patiently, and expect 3GBs of awesomeness. Oh, and !!!!!, I'm not sure that these do exist:

It's never used, and if you listen to the variation you can hear it's looping rather badly. The sound archive on the game disc refers to it as BGM_BIG_BOSS_FLYING. the other songs that are referring to BGM_BIG_BOSS are the imprisoned battles, so I think originally it was used for the Imprisoned when it levitated in the third encounter(and the variation being the Groosenator variation).
