Hello! I'm a registered member, and have seen an item that I'm interested in obtaining links for from the poster. I seem completely unable to figure out a way to even contact/pm the poster; since I've never asked to dl something before, I don't think I have the ability to thank anybody for any request fulfillment to get the option to pm the member in question. How do I go about doing this? Help!--chb33

This is not the right place for that kind of discussion. Noobs may be seen as a derogatory term, heh. At any rate, I don't see why some of you would look down upon leechers... There's no rule stating folks must share stuff, nor that they have to join public discussions.
I mean, can't we all just mind our own business? It's their goddamn problem how they want to "use" the community and/or their accounts, and I don't see those folks telling any of you how you should behave on here, show the same courtesy to them. :(

Normally I don't bother reading this thread, maybe a cursory glance now and then... but then your post Leon caught my eye.

You may or may not remember, but this site was a forum for Final Fantasy first and foremost, the download subforums sprung up long long after the site's inception. A member should at least participate/contribute to other parts of the forum, instead of just lurking in one sole section, downloading illegally obtained material (Defend it all you want, if it isn't officially released by the distributor and a form of compensation offered in exchange for said product, it is illegal.).

Leechers don't contribute to the overall forum whatsoever... As it is, only one damn section of this site see's any sort of regular activity and that's the download section and the majority of people there don't even contribute there... just take, take, take. This site has seen a significant loss of not just members (I'm talking about 'quality' members), the increase of inane/nonsensical posts in "dead threads" to increase post count so that (as zardozz22 stated) "noobs" can get PM privileges as well as the overall quality of the site decreasing.

I think my views on this matter are well known (As Amanda, Jessie and others can attest to). Personally, I don't think the download section should be here... should've just stayed @ Galbadia Hotel or other sites. Have a look via any search engine, and you can find other forums who hate this site solely for the download section. I'm pretty sure that Sarah and other admin have received cease and desist emails at times regarding some content a 'member' has posted here for download... Hell, some clever noob posted the entire strategy guide for Final Fantasy XIII here once, but that was taken down a few days later (more than likely because Piggyback or whatever company it was which made the guide, contacted the admin here regarding it).

Whether yourself Leon Scott Kennedy or others feel, personally this site has declined greatly in the last 5-6 years... and the download section is only adding to it.

Leon Scott Kennedy
09-07-2014, 10:44 AM
I won't deny anything of what you've said, but I don't think the biggest "culprit" of the decline is the Download section, so to speak. Members move on over time, they may lose interest in the series, or gaming in general... And this is a fact in every community. Then again, the main website hasn't really seen an update in years. The few "new" discussions popping about Final Fantasy chapters are either 'silly' contests a-la "What's your favourite character/game/etcetera," which I'd argue don't contribute to quality-discussion, either, but are more like junk-lists. There are also the usual requests for help, but while some among us still bother to help the users, there are also smartasses who answer "Go and Google it," which would be a perfectly fine solution, mind, but excuse that-random-user if he/she dares to think that on a community focused on Final Fantasy (going by its namesake and number of related sections, at least) he might have found individuals willing to help. Talk about trying to keep folks around, huh.

I think that this place would be more akin to a corpse, without the Download section, which yeah.... While riddled with "pirate-leeching-scum"... Also hosts most active discussions, I'm talking about proper discussions. Where's the other bulk of discussion going on? Oh, Final Fantasy XIV, General Discussion, General Gaming for the most part. So, let's get back to Final Fantasy: what's there to talk about, any more? Pretty much every possible topic has been beaten to death, brought back to life with a "Life 2"... And beaten again. Really, the only thing which might sound fresh nowadays would be a crack-discussion on who has the best looking gender-defining parts.
Final Fantasy Shrine has outlived its usefulness as gathering-place for Final Fantasy freaks... People want help on something? GameFAQs and even Youtube are bound to give them what they seek.
Keep blaming the Download section, but it isn't the worst thing which could happen to the Shrine. EDIT: A Staff which apparently lost the drive behind it is, in fact, what befell the Shrine.
Do you want quality discussion? Do you want to show to the Download-scum what's this place is about? Then let's try to do something about it, let's not just mourn, waiting for stuff to magically happen. One can't possibly blame a part of the community for something which is ultimately, and at large, a "fault" in management: for whatever reason. the Shrine stopped catering to fans of the Final Fantasy saga, or users which aren't really interested in illegal downloads, for the record; to this day — sadly, not much is seemingly getting done about the disastrous situation. The last news on the website is dated 11.20.06, the last game chapter covered is 12, best part about it? All there is chalks out the basic information and previews. The most we may get is an added section to the community, for a new main chapter.

Crying and mourning alone won't get us anywhere. Get a grip and acknowledge where the blame truly lies. You are merely deluding yourself, if you think the addition of the Download section coincides with the downfall of the Shrine, as a whole. You just chose the readily available pariah, things go a bit deeper than that.

Oh I WILL keep blaming the Download section... But not just that, the overall lack of anything to this board is the cause of the demise. Don't you dare to presume you know me or my motivations Leon Scott Kennedy, because you do NOT know me. All of your other points, believe it or not, I HAVE raised in the past with Sarah and others... Hell, I even offered some suggestions to Sarah in another thread about ways to try and revive the forum (Chief being a overhaul and revitalization of the main site). All I was given was a "We'll look into it" and that was it.

This site does have a bad name associated with it, whether you believe it or not. 90% of the original members have moved on, some of whom I still keep in touch with. One in particular hates this place now due to what it's become and refuses to have anything more to do with it, which is his choice. Myself... Sorry to disappoint one who has such a wide view of what the problem is here... The majority of new members do NOT contribute to the rest of this board at all, and don't presume otherwise. 99% of all posts in other subforums are thread necromantic in their design, solely to boost post count to allow PM availability. Those which actually DO contribute are few and far between.

You've only been here since 2007... I've been here since 2003 and even the changes between 03 and 07 have been drastic. This place is NOTHING compared to what it used to be, as the quality of the membership base has declined rapidly. As I write this, the only subforum with a large amount of 'members' (with 212 in it now) is the Film, Television and Classical Music Download Links (http://forums.ffshrine.org/film-television-classical-music-download-links/) with Video Game Music Download Links (http://forums.ffshrine.org/video-game-music-download-links/) with 110. So don't presume that the download sections haven't contributed in some way to the decline of this board Leon.

Haha! Correction, if I may: I've merely decided to participate, somewhat, in 2007... Don't assume the Join date of a user is the moment he/she first stumbles upon the community. Since it seems things aren't going to change, despite the valid points made to the Staff... What's there to gain by complaining? Sigh. At any rate, I didn't imply the download section didn't have any blame in the decline... I simply don't agree with it being the "biggest" cause. I can't believe users were the ones shifting the focus of the community from a discussion-focused place to a leeching-focused dump.

Oh? So for someone among your old acquaintances it is okay to make a choice, Revan? Why shouldn't one of the new users be entitled to do such thing (as in: choosing to not contribute to the place in a so called meaningful way, if he/she doesn't deem it worthy)? Who's the special guy, between the two? Because I don't see any actual difference.

I've seen this crap on communities smaller than the Shrine, blame lies with the Staff and the very members which leave the place to rot, too. But hey, I'm sure they cared.

I look on the join date as the 'official' date one becomes a member.

Nothing, because there is nothing being done about it. Points have been raised multiple times over the years about ways to refurbish and entice new members... yet nothing has been done about it. That is something only the admin can choose to do if they so desire.

True... but moderators can only do some things (as you should know). The majority of it is up to the admin to decide, yet....

And here I thought all users were equal, initially. Glad to know the right to say "Fuck it all, why should I care" has to be earned... Not really.

Sorry man, but I'm used to see people try and fight for what they care about... And that's something which I admire about you, you stay here despite things not going like you'd want.

Perhaps I don't have the right to talk, since I've been most active on the Download links "family" of forums, but if it were for me... To try and get folks to stay active, I'd put some kind of access-restriction to the download links area. Something like: "You don't gain access to this area until you have 50 posts," which of course have to be actual posts, because while it doesn't seem to happen all that much around here... I suppose the Staff could still ban a user for spam/flood. Perhaps we'd get users which stop contributing once they can access, but we might also get those who stick around. I think both the "forum" and the "download links" could co-exist, without one necessarily overshadowing the other.

You made a great final point, the fate of this place rests mostly in the hands of those which can actually manage it, so... Why do I see only the downloaders/leechers get epithets such as the one you've made in your latest post? Do they deserve the brunt? I could understand that, should they be alone? Nope.

Don't worry about that, there are other ways you might contribute to the forum, if you wish to do so... Though indeed the Download Links forum is the one most "alive", there are other parts where you can partake in more in-depth discussions.

My suggestion is to not pay any mind to anyone who acts like an asshole to you, folks, since their opinions on how you use your Internet bandwidth don't hold much relevance. They aren't the ones paying your bills, after all.

After having read the FAQ, I can tell you it reads as though it's a general help/posting from the programers of the the forum code. That is, whoever wrote the software design for the type of forum software, is who put together the general FAQ.

That's why this thread got started as a more personal-specific notation of how things work around here.

I must say, as a new member here, but a longtime member and admin at a different well-established forum, it's good to see there are some members and staff still fighting the good fight of keeping things active. Try to hold on. :) If people want to join, they will. This place isn't dependent upon ads for revenue or membership fees, so just keep up the good posting. People will join if they see they something they want to post and reply to (like I just did! lol).

Ah, it's a minimum post limit. Most forums I frequent use a minimum registered time of 2 weeks or something.

It all depends on how either the site itself or the forum/programming is setup. With the minimum time limit, it's too easy for spammers to wait it out. But for forums who are looking for better numbers and are willing to have lax policies (but take more time to go kill off zombies/trolls/spammers), this is setup so they can get those few people who register, but take off and forget they registered for a long while.

For post limit though, it's easier to roadblock the evil trifecta and have those few actual people who forget registering to email in a request. It's also meant to help have people engage more. So by the time they gain those new abilities (such as pm's and avatar setups or uploads...so on), those people are more completely-involved members of a community.

I just want to point out to Darth and Leon that I have never ever played Final Fantasy in my life, or even seen it played. I have never really played any video games. I found this place from another music dl site. A private place that mentioned the Shrine. And I joined initially only to get access to the Doctor Who music links. Just to add that into whatever matrix you are using to view the current state of things. Some of us have tried to drum up conversation before, with the expected results. Even in some of the private sites, folks like Sorei and I, and Calidoran have tried to get more interpersonal stuff shaking, but most members, even there in a small community, seem to prefer to grab and run with as little talk as possible.

FredOzzel
10-05-2014, 10:15 PM
Not to derail the topic but as a newer member I thought I'd mention this > internet conversation has been in general decline since the late 90s. (I'd say 98/99 specifically) Everywhere.

Around 1996 forums with high traffic diverted to online chatrooms where forums started to degenerate getting less traffic and fewer conversations of value. Forum chat suffered heavily, while the newer glitzy chatrooms / chat channels got more activity.

Afterwards chats started diverting to "lets get together and play some games" as an extension of chat. That sucked people out of chat communities everywhere as online gaming took over from chat partially. That started killing chat communities all over the net (forums were already dying that just made it worse) - soon people weren't willing to visit a chat, sit around and wait to see if anyone would have a conversation and instead popped in, saw no one saying much, and left - while other users simply lounged around doing other things returning to occassionally chat. That crippled a lot of chat communities. (again, forums were already hurting at that point)

Since then a Lot of people have gone to online MMOs and there conversation becomes mainly about how to beat the dungeon/boss, or who isn't pulling their weight in parties or ego stroking/preening or flat out abuse of "weak" players. In general MMO conversations tend not to be as rewarding or as pleasant as elsewhere.

Other forums elsewhere have either shut completely or turned into dried out wastelands with next to no activity of Any kind. Or other relatively inane/unpleasant conversations most of which are common on forums (and occassional flame wars which always hurt the forum/chat community) would happen instead of completely drying up...

So, In general forums and chat are in bad shape everywhere on the net.. they still serve a role(!) but issues with traffic and conversation are a major problem on most English forums I've seen. No doubt it's a problem elsewhere as well.
Not to mention, the social akwardness that generally affects internet chat, and other problems, that have left people unwilling to participate in discussion (to avoid attachments/flame wars and the like).

Just throwing that out there....

Thanks for this info. I know it's normal for a forum to have a minimum post requirement before activating the PM function. Glad I found this thread so I can know what to expect.

You're becoming a pathetic annoyance, Piano. Accept the fact you're banned now and get lost.

Well I have a different problem... I think.
I've posted enough to be able to send a message to someone on this forum, but it won't let me post a reply. Help?
