There's a user I want to pm, but there doesn't seem to be a pm button the person's profile, and every time I try to go to my inbox to manually send a pm to him, it says I don't have the privileges to view my inbox. Why is that?
Goren
10-09-2010, 08:04 PM
You need 5-10 posts to get PM privileges.
Fokkusu
10-11-2010, 09:53 PM
5-10? Does it vary from person to person?
Goren
10-11-2010, 10:16 PM
Nope
Fokkusu
10-11-2010, 10:23 PM
I'm confused. How can it be 5-10 and not vary from person to person? Wouldn't it be a static number then?
If it won't let you now, just find some topics and start posting. It won't take you long to get to the point where you can PM.
Marceline
10-12-2010, 01:09 AM
You need 5 posts to get the pm function, but people don't always get kicked into the usergroup that allows pming instantly once they hit that. You can make 5 posts and just wait for a while, or you can keep on posting, and after a bit, you'll be able to send pms.

I tried to send private messages to a couple of people myself, and I thought they weren't going through - but I went back into the message composer just now and I saw the check box option to "save a copy of my message to Sent Items"... no wonder nothing showed up in Sent Items after sending messages, lol.
I don't believe I get a confirmation box telling me my message has been sent either, which just added to my confusion. But I think I've got this figured out now...

You have well over the required post count. Just give it a little time to boot ya into the user group that has PMs enabled.
Bumping several threads about the topic isn't going to make that happen any faster.

5-10 posts actually... just keep posting til you get the PM function unlocked.

01-15-2011, 05:21 PM
You can PM after 5 posts, but for whatever reason, it can take the system a little while to move you into the "Registered: Can PM" group. So, sometimes it doesn't hit until 6-10 posts.
We have this in place because we used to have a real problem with users getting spam PMs. This way, someone actually has to stick around and post a bit if they want to spam. ;)
Sarah

You can't send a private message to users who haven't unlocked that feature... And if they disable private messages through the control panel, you receive a system message telling you that they have disabled such function.

I have exactly the same problem. I can receive PM's but can't send. I tried the track message and got a message that I don't have permission to use that function. Maybe it's because we are relative newbies??? Perhaps we have to build up a certain number of post to be able to send PM's. Can the Moderators please advise?

You can PM after 5 posts, but for whatever reason, it can take the system a little while to move you into the "Registered: Can PM" group. So, sometimes it doesn't hit until 6-10 posts.
We have this in place because we used to have a real problem with users getting spam PMs. This way, someone actually has to stick around and post a bit if they want to spam. ;)
I was wondering why I couldn't PM, and now I know! Thank You!

I've just discovered why I can't send/receive PMs, and I think it's a resonable policy.
Having that said, I find that such an important rule could be showed clearly in the forum rules, and/or even in the registration process.

Either another hack, or files got corrupted between all the "Database Errors" this place is (still) going through, as of late.

No, two comments/messages should be enough. ;)
Then you just have to wait. Half an hour or so, I think...
