Um. Maybe a dumb idea, but was thinking of doing an edit of the JP scores....to fit scenes from the books. Don't know how long it will take but I would like to do this just for my own personal enjoyment/dorkiness, but would anyone like a share link if I did? Just asking.

So, I finished the first part of JP the book version of the score. No, it is not meant to be read with the book. I edited the music thinking I was scoring a TV series for the novel; dramatized here and there and such. The cue titles are generally following the storyline and some of the titles are the same as the chapter titles. This is just what I "hear" when I read the book. I might make revisions but so far so good. I have up to the T-rex attack on the main road, about an hour and a half of music maybe more. The music might be repetitive, but, oh well. Any comments/questions are always welcome. PM me for link. I might even work on a cover when i am done. Enjoy. Again, this is not official, just a fan made edit to parallel the book.

I think that the ambience are a part of the music score. I have been trying to rip this game for a couple of days now and i found that every ambient noise repeats at the exact same time in sync with the music. I might be wrong but in that case the ambient track is the same lengt and loops the same place with the music.
EDIT: Sorry, i thought you meant Warpath.
I also discovered that there is a lot more music! each level of the game has at least 3 stages of music (more and more intense when someone is closer to loosing)
Aproximatley like this:
0-10% Health loss = Track 1
10-70% Health loss = Track 2
70-100% Health loss = Track 3
It's not layered instruments either, because for every track shift, it starts from the beginning.
But i also found another track which made me give up the whole ripping prosess, because after playing the recording back i found another track different from stage 1,2 and 3. I was finishing off the battle to chose another level, then this eery creepy theme kicked inn. like a different track if you are dominating the battle or something. I haven't been able to figure this out yet. I think the ONLY good solution to this is actually converting the STR audio files inside the game. This is where i am stuck. And i need help :S i have tried all the sugested programs to do so but i am unable to play them. Anyone up for this task? There are some great underrated music here composed by Michael Giacchino. I was also surprised to learn that this game uses smart music coding to play at different stages of the game. Depending on how you play.
I also found similar musical cues which is also used in the lost world PS1 game. kinda cool!

I sent you a PM. I'd like to hear what it sounds like :) good idea.
I have another idea too. What if you synced it with an audiobook? That way the listener could follow the story with the appropriate music in the background. People read at different pace. So it might not fit with everyone who is reading.
But you mentioned it's not meant to be heard with the book. So is it one long suite then remixed to fit the books content? Anyway im curios to hear :)

Prodigy1990: Never thought about pairing it with the audiobook. Would take some editing but an interesting project. I'll think about doing it, but if someone else would like to try as well that would be cool too.

My edit is cut into tracks (62 at the moment) and yes, for the most part it could be played while reading, but some tracks would not fit nicely, with long silent spaces or very short ones. The whole thing is about 5.5 hours long. Not everything, every moment in the book is scored, but most of it is. I do not have the audiobook of JP or TLW so I cannot at the moment splice in the score. A cool project that would make, no? Maybe later. So thats a little more of the project. Any other questions or comments please let me know. I also did not post this in its own starter thread because I did not want this widely distributed. I hope everyone understands.

@Jedisaurus, out of curiosity did you use the music from the Jurassic Park soundtrack or you mixed it with other music? Whats your strategy in creating this score?

08-14-2014, 06:28 PM
I took the tracks from the JP and JP Lost World and JP III Soundtracks (plus some of the expanded/rip scores) and edited them in Wavepad Sound Editor. I cut and splice and mix the cues to how I want them and then save them as their own track. There is one piece from Indiana Jones Temple of Doom (piano music) for the Airport background music when Dodgson meets with Nedry but all other music is from JP series. I go page by page and think "what would i score this like if I was making this into a movie" and then edit the music to best appropriate that. I hope that helps a bit :)

I gotta give you some credit. That sounds like a massive undertaking. Good Job! I'd love to hear a Lost World version.
Have any of you guys heard a radio theatre dramatisation before? In the country i come from it was quite popular in the 50's and still is. I found out that BBC did/does it as well. (yes I have heard of War of The Worlds) but it's a bit different from that. it's not like listening to an audio book or watching the films with no picture. but a fine mixture of them both.
This is probably semi off topic and should probably get it's own post. If it is i apologize and will remove this post. But I'm interested in experiment with that a bit. Try to make Jurassic Park or a The Lost World Radio dramatisation based on the movies or novel. use audio assets from the movie as well as other sound effects to explain what's going on, non visually but with sound. And maybe use an audio book as well. What do you guys think? anyone interested in that? or perhaps a colaboration project? :) just throwing an idea out there.
(i blame jedisaurus for getting me intrigued on this idea, haha)

I saw the Dinotopia movie ONE and remember being very disapointed. Probably because i recived so much hype from friends who knew i was into JP. But hey, maybe ill check out the book!

You mean the PS1 game? I am actually currently working on that. Unless you mean Operation Genesis (The only JP game released on PS2) it's quite easy as the ambients are stored as .ogg files in the game directory. Easy to grab if you own the game.
TLW PS1 game ambients tho is nothing spesial. If you like the ambients then you generally just like the sound of jungle birds and crickets in general. In the game it's rather low quality and easy to make yourself in HQ. Just add a T-Rex roar every now and then. But hey, not criticizing your nostalgic feelings for the game ^^ I'll let you know when I'm done.

Jurassic Park has all but been released. Excluding a few short cues which are available in the edit I've posted (ripped from the blu ray rather cleanly) the entire score has been made available on CD or digital download.
The Lost World, unfortunately, exists most completely in the version I was able to cobble together. Between film rips, recordings of the music playing over the speakers at IOA, and the album, there is a version available. The sheet music is available so I have considered doing mock ups of the missing material but have lacked the time.
Jurassic Park III is pretty much fully available (that we know) via film rips, the promo, and the album. I can say guess that there are still some parts missing, but no way to know entirely for sure.

Any thoughts on the Jurassic World Score anyone? as fans of the original Jurassic Park movie scores?
Besides the original John William themes used in the new score, did it have that JP feeling to any of you?
Personally i Love the Lost world probably the most of the original scores, but i can't say the new score has that many memorable JP touch moments musically to me. It's a good score, but a bit dissapointing when compareing it to the others IMO.
I felt the Ingen soldier theme however was spot on tho. And the music referance to the lost world PS1 game score Giacchino made was brilliant!
GoodMusician
06-19-2015, 03:41 AM
It's...hard for me to give an opinion on the score because I feel like with my unique history (having studied all three scores, written a JP themed score, and now listened to this one) I feel like whatever I say I have to make sure it's not coming off incorrectly.
Williams scores hold a spot very dear to me. I love how he writes, how he accents movement and tone and emotion, and the very sounds he uses.
Jurassic Park was fresh for the time. It had his 90's sound but like 'War of the Worlds' was an amalgam of so many other sounds and for a score that, unlike 'Schindler's List,' was produced in a bit of a crunch and with no time for revision, I find 'JURASSIC PARK' to be an amazing triumph for the era.
The Lost World still wins supreme for me for it's colors, textures, sounds, and scope. It is bold and big and takes large strokes and really paints a wonderful canvas that still harkens back to and touches on JURASSIC PARK.
Jurassic Park 3 is not high on my list of film scores, but it is passable. There are certain cues (mostly the Pterosaur sequence ones) where the music is truly well crafted. Other moments, you can tell the rushed and haphazard production hindered Don Davis ability to deliver much more than filler. The score suffers from being in the footprint (see what i did there? lol) of John Williams and tries very desperately to use William's...perhaps due to the lack of time to truly develop his own score past a four note Spinosaur motif and a family theme that feels tonally out of place with the rest of the score.
Jurassic World, however, is another animal entirely. Almost like the iRex it's a little bit of everything: Jurassic Park, The Lost World, The lost World Video Game, some moments that sound almost like Operation Genesis and even a moment that sounds just like a cue I wrote for Prime Survival... the score is not without it's comparisons.
What the score IS without, however, are memorable themes. Giacchino has never been one of my favourite composers. His orchestrations always sound like they're voiced incorrectly, they come off as jovial, inappropriate emotionally, or even FORCED emotionally. I WONT' say they're bad! They are good... but they are not the well crafted, insanely detailed, meticulously analyzed and thought out scores that William's has the ability (and perhaps the respect and time allowed) to deliver.
Giacchino's score also does some odd moments where the score becomes almost... almost like concert music playing over film. One instance is the pan up to the island and the familiar "Theme from Jurassic Park" playing through the scenes up until the reveal of the park in operation. This sequence is NOT a montage and yet the music plays as if it is. It's almost reminiscent of 2001 and how Kubrick used existing classical music over the film (in space and with silence otherwise) to create the mood while in JW, because there is dialogue and stuff going on, the music almost fights for attention against whats happening and it pulls me out of the film. There are several moments of this.
One issue with the film is Claire. She is the reason the park runs--with no qualms. Masrani is running around having fun while Claire meets with investors, checks in on the control room, handles security issues, begins marketing meetings, handles...everything...
If ANY person in the film deserves a theme...it is Claire... one that connects to, plays with, and is strongly enforced by the "Park is Open" theme... but we don't get one. I say a theme because think of Princess Lea... she has a theme but why? She's barely in A New Hope. Why does she get a theme and not Han?
The answer is context. The film doesn't have time to give context or explain who everyone is or why they are important, but we are explained emotionally how important someone can be and this emotional explanation... informs the audience that 'this is a person of stature and respect' even if we don't know why. The SAME should have been done for Claire.
Owen gets a ridiculous fanfare before he runs in to the paddock to stop the "raptor squad" from making lunch of the other park employee.
The piano for the Dying apatosaur does nothing for me. The solo horn for the door to the old VC was too predictable....
The iRex music works well I think... but almost gets overplayed. It's memorable and does it's job so I can't complain really about it.
There are a lot of moments that feel... haphazard...like he wasn't sure what to do and just did what he had time for and moved on.
There are some cues that are good! The pterosaur music was all brilliant. Every last bit. It even has a William's feel to it and it spot on emotionally.
Some of the quotes in the film almost seem obligatory... like William's quoting 'Der Rosenkavalier' in A.I., it was a stipulation he quote this and that and so he did in ways that were appropriate but short.
The frivolity of the source music works perfectly so no issues with that, but in all, i feel like the score could have been better and the film deserved a bit of a stronger score in some moments.

Perfectly summed up if you ask me. I also noticed track 7, The Indominus Wrecks partially sounds a LOT like a track from the tv series lost. Same iconic bells and string buildup, doesn't really feel like Jurassic Park. But then there are some parts i like, Like Bury the hatchling. Reminds me of the first teaser for the original JP, and the amber zoom-in scene blended with parts from John Williams close encounters of the third kind score.

The soundtrack was never oficially released and the track titles are confusing. I don't think there's any true tracklist, but i have seen some versions use the name of the dinosaur for each of the level as the track title, or you coul'd use the name of the level. But there is a lot more music in the game currently not available. Each track has at least 3 versions and there are some other themes as well missing. Been working on ripping it myself but haven't had the time to finish it. So many bugs and errors..

SO glad to hear someone finally say what I've been saying for years. Your analysis of JP4 is spot-on. Giacchino is the most overrated composer in Hollywood, today. Nothing against the guy, personally, but most of his scores are just awful. I don't understand why he is so celebrated (if you can call it that). Well, if not "celebrated," he's certainly busy — and gets huge gigs. So much about his work seems off: The writing, the orchestrations, the mixes. Yet, he gets one big gig after another. It truly blows my mind.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your honest (if also tactful and respectful) thoughts. They are echoed.

Any news whatsoever on recording sessions for JP, TLW, JP3 and JW? Maybe we can petition La-La-Land to try and do a special release?
