Who are you expecting to play the most, at least at first? I'm not assuming anything before I've had a chance to try everybody but the characters I think I'm most likely to spend a lot of time with:

From what I've seen I have a feeling Wolf is going to be my favorite character by far. He seems to be the closest in some ways to Melee Falco, who was easily my favorite in that game.

I hate Sonic. Everyone who hates Sonic, say so. If you don't hate Sonic and you say so I will beat you with Wolf when the game comes out. The first thing I am likely to do after unlocking Wolf is go into training, set the CPU to Sonic, and beat him up a lot. I am thinking Wolf may actually smash him so hard, he will be thrown out of the game.

Also, I don't know how many people here read Penny Arcade, they really aren't very funny these days. The funniest thing they've done in a good long while is insinuate that Pikachu was a really good character in Melee.

I have yet to find an Ike player who can even stay at the same stock as me. I think I have at least 2-0d every one I've played, and I am just a decent player. I'm sure there are good ones out there but I have never found them. I severely doubt he will be a high tier character, probably somewhere around mid, and there is absolutely NO way he is better than Marth. Not even close. Marth is still super dominant.

I have had so, so much fun with this game on wi-fi. It's a real treat for me to be able to play a wide variety of opponents. I've never had that with Smash before. I have encountered people who are light years beyond my play level and it has really improved me in a lot of ways. I've encountered people who are way under me too, and it has been pleasant to help them get better and offer them advice about what to do against me. I might be driving out to make some Smash gatherings soon because I have had some encouraging feedback. Anyway, point being, this is like my favorite game ever.

as fun as it is to destroy people who make silly claims about the game, it doesn't really prove anything about tiers. A good player using the worst character can easily defeat a bad player using the best. Tiers really just measure what would be likely to happen between two characters with players of exactly even skill.

LoL, I hate Brawling against Marth. My wife absolutely loves him, and her Marth tends to beat several of my characters. She usually doesn't 3-0 me, but my first (and usually only) KO comes after my first stock's gone and I'm at 40-70%. Our matches usually end like this.

Marth Fsmashes me (playing somebody other than Samus) off the level. I recover, and after a dodge roll, get a little combo in.

Marth SideB's (I think it's the SideB, I don't play a lot of Marth) me off the level. I recover and try to dance a bit to regroup and get something resembling an offense going.

Marth Fsmashes me again. As I recover, I say something along the lines of "I freaking hate Marth!"

"Why?" *EDGEGUARD THWACKITUDE!* "Fuck! That's why. Damn Marth."

As the results screen comes up, I, being the sporting sort, usually say, "Alright, I'm playing Samus now."

"...Crap."

LoL, yeah. Once I talked her into playing somebody besides Kirby, she got a lot better a lot faster. Seriously, I went on like, a three-minute rant about Kirby. That being said, I play Samus almost exclusively. I try to play with other characters because my Samus is just good enough to beat her pretty regularly. My Falco just pisses her off. "That...damn...zippy-move!" (his side-B)

I would really appreciate that; I have a predilection toward the faster characters, and my complete inability to play Sonic with any sort of effectiveness is incredibly frustrating to me.

As far as I can tell, the best Sonic strategy is to pretend you're playing melee and are an 8-year-old kid with ADHD on speed. Sometimes I just run around back and forth and my mindgames make them jump off the stage. When that doesn't work, I'll just do the same thing but abuse my dash attack or aerials. His B moves are all pretty meh to me, but I do use his neutral B sometimes. Dash+grab is pretty useful too.

I think the key is to keep moving on the ground. At least, that's how I play him. Strategies obviously change for stages like Hannenbow or 75m, but the ADHD concept seems to work.

Oooh, a cool trick for ZSS is using her downB to gain distance for recovery. Just don't hit A, else you're fucked.

Yeah, but I don't want to spend the money on a freeloader just to have it locked out in a future patch. I'm getting the WiiKey which is firmware upgradeable, meaning that if Nintendo locks it out I can just flash it and be good to go.

noskill, there are three gaming regions - NTSC-U for the USA and Canada, NTSC-J for Japan and parts of Asia, and PAL for the rest of us (Europe, Australia, etc).

The PS3, PSP and DS are all region free for games - the PS3 and PSP are somewhat region-locked when it comes to Blu-ray and UMD movies respectively.

The 360 is ostensibly regoin-locked, but about half the games released are region-free, because it is an option for the companies releasing the game as to whether or not the game is region free.

The Wii is region-locked for all games.

The reason that Sony and Microsoft don't enforce region locking is because they don't enforce production as rigidly as Nintendo - anyone who remembers the Nintendo Seal of Quality knows how they feel about Quality Assurance. All Wii discs are made for a certain region in a certain way - Sony just pumps out Region 0 Blu-rays, and Microsoft leaves it up to the company publishing the title.

It's also worth noting that most high-profile PS3 and Xbox 360 releases (Halo 3 and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue to name a couple) have come out in all regions simultaneously - Nintendo has dropped the ball quite a bit. Every high-profile Nintendo title has taken a couple of months to hit European / Australian shelves after being released in America and Japan.

The original line was that because it's handheld, it's designed to be portable - so if you go on a world holiday and chuck in your DS, Nintendo wants you to be able to pick up a shiny new DS game whether you're in New York, London or Tokyo.

The real reason is probably that DS piracy is so damned easy anyway, they figure it really wasn't worth putting region-locks in. I'm not even sure how one would implement region coding on a flashcard - for the NES and SNES, they 'region locked' games by using different shaped cartridges for different regions.

And honestly, Nintendo is only hurting themselves by region-locking the Wii. Any game I don't think is worth $100 - and there are quite a few in that category - will be getting downloaded by me from now on.

Well since you're getting a mod chip (I think) why not buy from playasia?

Because the mod-chip doesn't always work with every NTSC game - for about half of them you still need to rip it, apply the RegionFrii patch and burn it to a DVD anyway.

I'm not going through that much effort when I don't need to.

Anyhoo, the official date for Brawl has been announced by Nintendo Europe: June 27th is when the starved masses will be able to get their hands on the game. Provided they haven't already imported it.

You were superb, as your friend(s) were, too. Those were pretty intense matches, and despite being outnumbered (Not sure why everyone targeted me alone.), I'm pretty sure I held my own formidableness, especially when triumphing at the last match...against whomever I was playing. Fantastic games!

Mario/bass/Suji are good from what I played should at least be about the same as me if not better so you may want to play against them. Like Mario and me man last week we had like so many close matches man that was like oh baby he was Mario everytime man and he was oh baby dancing and juke jiving and bass I didn't do so well against that fellow like we only played maybe five or six matches and i think i won two he won four or something he is pretty good and that Suji I only had time for like 4 or 5 matches or sth he was pretty good too though his friends they were there too man I don't think anybody who posts in here regularly is bad at all to be honest like I am sure the people at a board like gamefaqs would be

Too be perfectly honest the only characters I really spend time playing as are Marth/Pikachu/Ness. Anybody else I chose I had a basic idea of how to play them but no real time invested in playing them. I would say I played as Zelda and Rob probably more than most others though everybody I chose I had some idea how to play as them. I don't really like playing as big, slow people so I didn't play as any of them I believe. This probably doesn't exactly reflect how good I am with whatever character but I am pretty sure I do better with Ness than any other character. Not positive, though.

TBH I used to be a lot better, especially with Sonic. I need to get used to the lag >_>

But damn you wrecked me with Marth and Ness a few times. My favorite ending was that one where I was Falco and you were Marth and you kept trying to KO me. Then at the last minute, Phantasm'd you. The fact that it KO'd you made my jaw drop since I expected to lose.

You're pretty good with Toon Link, too. Thanks for reminding me how much I hate that little bastard! :p

Too be honest the only reason I don't like Toon Link is I can't really kill with him and I'm not so good with his air game.

You were superb, as your friend(s) were, too. Those were pretty intense matches, and despite being outnumbered (Not sure why everyone targeted me alone.), I'm pretty sure I held my own formidableness, especially when triumphing at the last match...against whomever I was playing. Fantastic games!

Forgive me, I play under the name "MATT" (I used R.O.B., and Mario, at one point), "KEV" was a friend of my bro "NATE". I wanted to fight you alone; however, the others wouldn't allow, so we organized a sloppy "turns" system to solve the issue. From your response, I know it worked terribly (*sorry*). I'll be sure that doesn't happen again.

Nonetheless, I realized how skilled you are with Mario (I didn't realize that the "Mario" in Mario Kinnikuman truly reflected the character you used!). You oblitherated "KEV" (you fought him last) one-on-one when he used his best character Pit; thats truly impressive! On top of that, you dunked (spiked) him off the stage a countless number of times! I didn't let him live that last fight down, either!

As I said before, you are incredible, which means that I'll be looking forward to fighting you in the near future, which should be next Fri., Sat., and Sun. afternoon...

personally i think mario kinnikuman is probably the best player here but that may just be because i haven't played suji all too much and everytime i play doku we kind of just mess around i can tell he's good but like we are just taunting basically the whole match

My Ness and Falco are fair enough, I suppose, though I'm no Sethlon. My Mario's pretty crappy, and my Tink is still developing. I've picked Marth up a couple weeks ago and I'm really liking him thus far.

For me it's just Fox Sonic and toon link. Marth is optinal to me.

Mains are Sonic, Dedede, Falco, Ike, and Snake.

I think Falco's better than Wolf anyway. :P

My "input delay" was closer to a full second in places. Seriously, I counted "one mississippi" on more than one occasion between button press and action. When I played Marth against your DDD, I went for a ftilt, but apparently, the game thought I wanted a fair (actually, it looked rather like a nair) after you had knocked me off the edge. When I just stood there for your fsmash, I had been holding my shield since just before DDD's hammer was all the way up. Hello, sweetspot. During the Tink/Ike match, I was on the platform under you and wanted a Zair. So I had hit Z for Tink's Zair as soon as he was airborne--the clawshot didn't come out till I was above your head. ROB didn't DI back at all when I jumped directly into your Lucas upsmash. Chances are, you still would've connected, but I at least wouldn't have just hopped right into it, y'know?

Since the topic came up in another thread, I was wondering if any Shriners had any speculations about what Brawl's tierlist might look like when it comes out. Well, that, and I'm bored, lulz. So here's my list:

Top: Snake, Metaknight

High: Falco, Marth, ROB, Mr. Game and Watch, King Dedede

Mid: Wario, Toon Link, Pit, Wolf, Pikachu, Ice Climbers, Diddy Kong, Zero Suit Samus, Fox, Olimar, Lucario, Donkey Kong, Mario

Low: Zelda, Luigi, Sheik, Ness, Kirby, Ike, Pokemon Trainer, Lucas, Sonic, Peach, Bowser, Link

Bottom: Jigglypuff, Samus, Ganondorf, Captain Falcon, Yoshi

Pretty much everything between ICs and Peach is pretty hazy for me. I went by some speculations I've read and my own opinions of the characters. Granted, I'm not knowledgeable at all about some characters (DK!), so I kinda went with what others said.

So how bad is my list?

I'd put Sonic in a tier under bottom

By my firsthand experience, and several testimony of others of how frustrating Ike can be to defeat sometimes, I think he's easily a candidate to be categorized under High Tier, if not Top Tier. Even a competent Ike is a credible threat, as it's only necessary for Ike to score a couple of solid hits to achieve a KO; especially due to the immense potency of his smash attacks.

Zelda has increased in formidableness in SSBB from SSBM, whereas her spry counterpart, Sheik, seems to have weakened for the worst overall, due to decreased stamina and strength. Zelda boasts one of the most, if not the most ironclad defense of all other combatants, which most proficient Zelda players will exploit during a fight. She has many avenues of preventing opponents from approaching her, and can facilely counterattack them once they do, if they're not cautious. Zelda ought to be classified under Middle Tier, but she definitely has the potential to be exalted to High Tier.

I concur with Mario being Middle Tier. Mario straightforwardly reflects the skills of the player themselves, and his position in the Tier Chart will fluctuate accordingly as the scope of his prowess is primarily contingent upon the person playing as him.

Mario I liked playing you, but lag ruined it for me.

Ditto, bassist. As along as I'm not continuously disconnected with the error message, "Disconnected from network during transmission", which strangely causes my game to freeze, moreover, I can tolerate lag.

Meh, lag destroys the experience for me. Makes me feel like I'm not really controlling my character.

The "disconnected from network" message is by far, the most annoying prompt. Especially when it happens in Basic Brawl/Team Battle right when you have a full game. Double you tea effe, Nintendo?!

lag usually isn't that bad for me when i play with friend, sometimes it is but most of the time it's okay, at least for one on one.

i no my matches with swami have been like basically pretty good, mario they were 1 on 1 but a little laggy when 3 and 4 people went crazyyyyy
