I believe all subsequent English versions of FFIV after the SNES one is based on Hardtype (the original English SNES release of FFIV is based on a toned down version called Easytype). Although it shouldn't be too hard. You just need to level up a lot. And stock up on a lot of stuff.

Just for clarification. The US version isn't based on a toned down version of the Japanese Easy Type. The Japanese Easy Type version of the game was based on the US version, which was a toned down version of what they called the Hard Type (the Japanese original).
I didn't really think it was that hard. The only thing that really annoyed me was saving. The weird thing is that I thought the SNES version was harder than the PS1 version. I guess I'm just a better gamer now.

I just wish the last save point was a wee bit closer to the final boss. The first (and second) time I fought him I got my ass handed to me. NOT COOL. I really enjoyed the game, and am entertaining the notion of buying a DS so I can play the jacked-up version.
I think the game wasn't "hard"; I think other Final Fantasy games were too easy by comparison.

This was harder than it's original SNES Release. The Easy/Hard Type difference is very noticeable. Just level up a bit, you'll be fine

Agreed.
And I'd love to kill the jackass who punked me 10 years ago (via a Japanese FFVI - SNES FFII differences FAQ iirc) into thinking that you could revive Palom and Porom in a side quest before finally going for Zemus in Hardtype (now that my memory's jogged, I remembered another reason why I actually stopped playing the Japanese FFIV with the English translation patch - when I found out I was punked and could actually do nothing to get Palom and Porom back to the part).

The PSX version is the 'Hard Type' I believe, which is why without the proper levels its is quite possible to get annihilated with one hit.

Thats good. Oh and thanks for not crying and getting pissed off and starting a Complaint thread in general discussion after my wise-ass remark.

Well at least now I know that Chrono Trigger is a lot better than this game.

It was hard for me in comparison to most other Final Fantasys I've played. I would say it was as hard for me as Final Fantasy V.
But they shouldn't be that difficult for me if I could beat the Resident Evil 2 on Normal (instead of Easy) mode, get A ranks, and unlock Tofu (which I did late last year). I haven't even gotten back to playing FFIV, V, or haven't had the time to play video games as much since I've been so focuse on college. But I definatly will when I do have time ;). I even got started on the Chrono Trigger with the FFIV and I really like it so far.
