GameGuy444,
The previous comments regarding how I made these soundtracks was back before I even had a computer (with a sound card). I was using a Fostex digital multi-tracker recording live signals from RCA audio cable connected to the NES' audio out. It was very much "analog" and sounded considerably worse than converting a pre-existing NSF to WAV/MP3.

It was not to meant to say that the original, non-emulated sounds worse. It was my recording method at the time that was. Also not to imply that MONO sounds worse, but I prefer stereo when listening to stand-alone music.

There's plenty of other great people preserving the authentic sound.
For anyone who wants the mono sound, I recommend getting Sigma62's NES stuff.

Also, since first making this thread I have speeded up the process of converting to MP3, but arrangement, tagging, and other stuff (researching composer info, finding stage names, actually playing through the game) still takes time.

You can listen to some of my Hardware NES music, it's mono but we did EQ it and add some ST Reverb: http://www.youtube.com/user/fixfred99#p/u/5/Pn63BKWFYSU

EDIT: Another NES soundtrack is almost done. Look for it tomorrow. It's a big one!

Thanks for clearing that up, makes sense. Stereo isn't bad I've done it with SIDs (C64 music) using a HardSID card but SID fans prefered mono...it's one of those things.

NES music is the same, it was presumbly composed in mono, many OST remixed it in ST (I agree usually a bad job at that) so most NES music fans prefer it in mono. I agree that mono rips are all over the net so there's no point in you doing that.

What NSF Emulator are you using?

Since I have the NES PowerPak cart I am able to play any NSF music from the NES Hardware so I have done some (won't say a lot) comparing.

By my simple tests NotSoFatSo was the best emulator, spot on perfect. The only differnces was NES recordings were slightly "warmer" that's probably because it was a true analog recording, mix, all channels etc. matched 1:1 - as far as my ears could tell...99.9%

What NSF Emulator are you using?
I don't use emulator unless there is no NSF of the game or if there is a certain song missing from an NSF. When that happens I use Nestopia for sound logging.

I also use NotSoFatso with Winamp Pro to make WAVs, and Audacity + LAME for editing and MP3 conversion.

That song also happens to be the composer's favorite (he refers to it as "Track 2"). It was composed by Neil Baldwin. He still does chiptunes and maintains a website where you can download all his work and read insider comments about the creation of each game's music.

Also I think I solved the mysterious iTunes problem.
Oops! I forgot to upload the new files. They are all there now. I found/fixed the problem so sorry to all you iTuners that were suffering.

WARNING TO ALL UPLOADERS WHO USING ID3 TAGGING PROGS: Do NOT use the current Linux/Ubuntu version of EasyTag for MP3 files. It is incompatible with iTunes somehow. The Windows version works fine though.

While testing out the entire 6.5.0.Tunes library, I noticed that the ID3 tag for TRACK # was never filled out. This is what iTunes uses for song order. I spend a lot of time on arrangement, therefore it was important to re-tag everything. So I did that and re-uploaded EVERY SINGLE NES SOUNDTRACK with updated tags and files that are guaranteed to work in iTunes.

So yeah... just go ahead and download everything again. :D
(I'm sure my host from the ZHX blogsite won't mind the bandwidth too much.)

Z.E.N., you have an awesome collection, and I love your efforts. I do have one suggestion that you might want to try looking at, though.

Namely, getting(if at all possible) a rip of the TENGEN Tetris game. While I know that the music from it is actual Russian classic music, I guess the child in me prefers the tinny version that I listened to endlessly on that game.:)

As I said, merely a suggestion...you seem to be doing a bang-up job regardless.:D

description: all i remember is the whole game is dark except you, the player, the main person because there is a spotlight on you. and it follows you everywhere u go. other than the spotlight on you, everything is dark. it was an NES game. idk if it was based on anything (like another form of media like games are) but i doubt it.

Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-Kun
Dr. Mario
Dragon Warrior/Quest II, III & IV
Final Fantasy II & III
Kid Icarus
Kirby's Adventure
Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!
Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom

Here is the song that plays during the famous intro sequence of Nintendo's rare M82 Game Selectable Working store demonstration unit. Composed by Hirokazu Tanaka (also did 'Metroid').

Also made an animation of the demo screen that the song plays during.

Just because.

I tired to download Double Dragon 2 with WinRAR, but it didn't work. Help me to fix it. It say, ''Unexpected end of archive.''
I re-uploaded 'Double Dragon II'. Apparently it was only half there.

Double Dragon II (24.6 MB) (http://robertlbryant.com/ptn/6.5.0.Tunes/Double_Dragon_2.zip)

Just nabbed the Faxanadu soundtrack -- man, I LOVED that game as a kid -- and it sounds wonderful, definitely better than listening to an emulated NSF version. Gonna go about grabbing some of the other releases too (might get all of them, for posterity's sake).

This may have been asked in the thread already, Z.E.N, but is there any chance of an SNES variation of this archive?

Thanks, but no merit, it's pretty much done simply by adjusting the pan sliders to both square channels on the NotSoFatso plugin in Winamp. The most work comes from splitting and encoding the resulting WAV, but that's minimum. Since the thread starter is long gone, it would be nice if we all gathered to continue working and share our experiments.

OK, double post, but it's an upload so I wanna keep it separate. Here's DW4:

Dragon Warrior IV (NES Stereo) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/109623321/Dragon%20Warrior%20IV%20%28NES%20Stereo%29.rar)

Now, I have DW3, but I don't have a tracklisting or timelisting for it, so they're just unnamed, 5 minute loops of the songs. If you have any info about what the tracknames from the DW3 OST are, I can try to fill them in, or I can upload them as-is.

SevenX
08-02-2013, 02:14 PM
Thank you again, ruiner9! You can just post DW3 as-is. I can tag and re-upload them.

What software are you using? I'd like to help out if I can but I'm not sure where to start. The main thing I don't know is the correct panning of different sounds. I'm not familiar with music production so I don't know where each instrument should go. I don't know what effects to add either, like compression or chorus.

ruiner9
08-02-2013, 02:29 PM
Bucky O'Hare! (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/109623321/Bucky%20O%27Hare%20%28NES%20Stereo%29.7z)

Well, SevenX, I use a couple different apps depending on the quality of the initial NSF. If the NSF comes with an m3u file, I can run it through Winamp using the Chipamp plugin, and then I just convert it to a high-quality set of wav files. The m3u file automatically names and time-limits each one. After the wavs are done, I use the re-encoding feature on NERO 12 to make super-high quality VBR LAME MP3 files. Then, I fill in some details, like composer info, and publisher, etc.

If the NSF doesn't come with an m3u, it's a little more tricky. NSFPlay has a built in loop-detector, which works MOST of the time, but you need to convert the tracks to wav one by one, and then do a little more editing of the file names to make it presentable.

As far as audio goes, I like to put SQR0 and SQR1 on opposite sides, as in most tracks, these two instruments are in harmony, and the separation can create some pretty cool effects. The TRI, I just keep slightly off-center, and the noise and DMC channels are usually centered too. Percussion only coming out of one speaker sounds pretty bad. You can probably slightly off-center the two on opposing sides for songs with a lot of percussion (like Tim Follin's works, or a lot of Konami tracks) but I like to keep my sounds as uniform as possible.

As far as chorus/ effects go, I aim for a pure NES sound, so I don't mess with any of that stuff. Putting a little chorus or reverb might make it sound a bit richer, depending on the tune, but that's a matter of personal taste, and I'm trying to please the crowd here. ;)

I think, as a personal project, I'm going to upload a lot of Tim Follin's stuff (who's by far one of the best NES composers IMHO) and then start on some of the NSF's that I have pre-tagged m3u's for, just because they're quicker and easy. Still working on DW and FF, too!

ruiner9

No, NSF players like NSFPlay or NotSoFatso can actually separate the different channels of the tracks and provide the user with sliders to adjust the panning on each one. It's true stereo, not some silly psychoacoustic effect! If you read up a few posts, I go into more details about it.

Hails!
Thanks to all who have kept this thread going long after the original website's demise. I'm glad to see other members have picked up on the "NES in stereo" projects to keep it going. '6.5.0.Tunes' may be done but will still be archived here and at this address:

http://robertlbryant.com/ptn/6.5.0.Tunes/6.5.0.Tunes.php

However, if I ever do pick up on this project again, all updates will only exist here at the shrine as I cannot access the PlayTheNES site any more.

Since then, this thread has been edited and all of the links on the first post are working again, so download away!

Here is some of the stuff I made that was not previously added to this topic...

Great post! Many years ago I recorded the music off my 8-bit Nintendo onto MiniDisc, then transferred it to my computer. But, these sound WAY better haha. Thanks!
