The film is an eulogy of the human courage before an overwhelming nature. And it is a much more poignant movie, knowing that Nanook and his family actually died on a snow storm, right after the film was finished.

FIEND WITHOUT A FACE (1958/Producers Associates/Eros) 74mins. BW. UK.
Credits: Dir: Arthur Crabtree; Prod: John Croydon; Ex.Prod: Richard Gordon; Sc: Herbert J. Leder; Ph: Lionel Banes; Sfx: Ruppel & Nordhoff, & Peter Neilson; Mu: Jim Hydes; Mus: Buxton Orr. From the story "The Thought-Monster" by Amelia Reynolds.
Cast: Marshall Thompson, Kim Parker, Terence Kilburn, Kynaston Reeves, Robert MacKenzie, Gilbert Winfield, Stanley Maxted, James Dyrenforth, Peter Madden, Michael Balfour, Launce Maraschal, R. Meadows White, Sheldon Allan, Alex Archdale, Shane Cordell, Lala Lloyd, Tom Watson, Kerrigan Prescott, Sandra Glen.
"New horrors! Mad science spawns evil fiends!...Taking form before your horrified eyes!"
An atomic research centre is blamed for the strange local murders, but it is actually a scientist's experiments with thought materialization that produces the strange brain-like creatures that kill by sucking out the brain and the spinal cord from their victims. Major Cummings, (Thompson), destroys the creatures by turning off the atomic power source on which their creator has managed to feed his mind.
A slow moving B-movie until the last fifteen minutes when the brain-creatures appear and it becomes exceedingly gooey.

THE UNCANNY (1977/Tor Prod./Cinevideo) 86mins. Canada/UK.
Originally titled: BRRRR!
Credits: Dir: Denis Heroux; Prod: Claude Heroux & Rene Dupont; Ex.Prod: Claude Heroux & Milton Subotsky; A.Prod: Harold Greenberg, Richard St. Johns, & Robert A. Kantor; Sc: Michael Perry; Ph: Harry Waxman & James Bawden; Ed: Peter Weatherley, Keith Palmer & Michael Guay; Des: Wolf Kroeger & Harry Pottle; Sfx: Michael Albrechsten; Mu: Tom Smith; Mus: Wilfred Josephs.
Cast: Peter Cushing, Ray Milland, Susan Penhaligon, Katrina Holden, Joan Greenwood, Simon Williams, Donald Pilon, Alexandra Stewart, Roland Culver, Donald Pleasence, Sean McCann, Chl”e Franks, Jean Leclerc, Samantha Eggar, Catherine Begin, John Vernon, Renee Giraud.
Mr. Wilbur Gray, (Cushing) approaches his publisher, (Milland), to print the book of tales he has written explaining his fear of cats and why he believes they want to control mankind.
A maid and her lover kill the mistress of the household to try and recover her will that makes them heirs to the woman's fortune. The lady's family of cats attack the couple and trap them in the cellar while they feed on the old woman's corpse waiting for the killers to emerge.
An orphan girl named Lucy, (Holden), moves in with her aunt only to be tormented by the aunt's spiteful daughter who doesn't realise that Lucy is a witch. When the girl harms Lucy's black cat, the young witch shrinks her to the size of a mouse, lets her cat play with the girl and then sqaushes her underfoot.
Horror film star Valentine D'Ath, (Pleasence), kills his wife and their cat's litter of newborn kittens when he leaves with his lover, but the cat follows them, rips out his tounge and closes an iron maiden on the woman while she is rehearsing for a play.
The publisher is sceptical of Mr. Gray's tales, but when the frightened man leaves the office he is attacked by the neighbourhood cats and the publisher is willed by his own cat to burn Gray's manuscript.
Although there are a few good moments in this average compedium, the film is spoilt by the unconvincing premise and a host of not very frightening felines.

THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (1970/Hammer/AIP.) 91mins. (UK). 88mins. (US). UK.
Aka: CARMILLA.
Credits: Dir: Roy Ward Baker; Prod: Harry Fine & Michael Style; Sc: Tudor Gates, Harry Fine & Michael Style; Ph: Moray Grant; Ed: James Needs; Art: Scott MacGregor; Mus: Harry Robinson. From "Carmilla" by Sheridan Le Fanu.
Cast: Peter Cushing, Ingrid Pitt, Kirsten Betts, Kate O'Mara, Harvey Hall, Madeline Smith, Dawn Addams, George Cole, Ferdy Mayne, Pippa Steele, Jon Finch, Douglas Wilmer, John Forbes Robertson, Charles Farrell, Janey Key.
The Karnstein family of vampires reigned over Styria until Baron Hartog, (Wilmer), destroyed them all, but their daughter Mircalla, (Pitt), escapes. Years later a young woman named Marcilla is invited to stay at General Von Spieldorf's, (Cushing), home after a carriage accident. Marcilla vampirises the General's daughter and then moves on. While in another household, Marcilla, now known as Carmilla, proceeds to vampirise the household and force her lesbian attentions on a young woman, (Smith). Meanwhile, General Spieldorf discovers her whereabouts, reveals her vampiric tendencies and beheads her.
The first of Hammer's erotic vampire films that created a new sub-genre of titillating vampires although it was just another ploy to extend the life of a tired, overworked theme.
The attitude of the British film censor was such that the film was released in tact.
Sequel: LUST FOR A VAMPIRE.

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (1974/Gruskoff/Venture/Crossbow/TCF) 108mins. BW. US.
Credits: Dir: Mel Brooks; Prod: Michael Gruskoff; Sc: Gene Wilder & Mel Brooks; Ph: Gerald Hirschfeld; Ed: John Howard; Art: Dale Hennessy; Sfx: Hal Millar & Henry Millar Jr.; Mu: William Tuttle; Mus: John Morris.
Cast: Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Ann Beesley, Kenneth Mars, Oscar Beregi, Madeline Kahn, Leon Askin, Gene Hackman, Liam Dunn, Danny Goldman, Richard Hayden, Rusty Blitz, Monty Landis, Lou Cutell, Richard Roth.
The American grandson of Baron Frankenstein, Frederick, (Wilder), denies his infamous ancestry until he is told by an old family retainer, (Haydn), that he has inherited the Baron's estate in Transylvania. At the castle he discovers his grandfather's secret formula and with the aid of Inga, (Garr), and his hunchbacked manservant Ygor, (Feldman), he makes his own monster, (Boyle). The monster escapes, meets a blind hermit, (Hackman), and finds love from Frankenstein's fiance, (Kahn).
This earnest homage to the early Frankenstein films is given the Brooks treatment, but despite the juvenile humour there are many moments to treasure, heightened by the monochrome photography that manages to capture the atmosphere of the original films. The laboratory sets were the same ones used in THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) designed by Kenneth Strickfaden.

a) A Kiss Before Dying is a 1956 American color film noir, directed by Gerd Oswald. The screenplay was written by Lawrence Roman, based on Ira Levin's 1953 novel of the same name, which won the 1954 Edgar Award for "Best First Novel." The drama stars Robert Wagner, Jeffrey Hunter, Virginia Leith, Joanne Woodward, and Mary Astor, among others.
Wagner plays a psychopathic college student, who upon discovering that his wealthy girlfriend — played by Joanne Woodward in one of her first film roles — is pregnant out of wedlock, kills her and stages the murder as a suicide.
b)A Kiss Before Dying (1991) is a British and American neo-noir film. It was directed by James Dearden, and based on the novel of the same name by Ira Levin, whose book won the 1954 Edgar Award for "Best First Novel." It has been adapted for the cinema twice. The drama features Matt Dillon, Sean Young, and others

MACABRE (1958/William Castle & Robb White/Allied Artists) 73mins. BW.
Credits: Dir. & Prod: William Castle; Sc: Robb White; Ph: Carl E. Guthrie; Ed: John F. Schreyer; Art: Jack T. Collins & Robert Kinoshita; Sfx: Jack Rabin, Louis DeWitt & Irving Block; Mu: Jack Dusick; Mus: Les Baxter. From "The Marble Forest" by Theo Durrant.
Cast: William Prince, Jim Backus, Jacqueline Scott, Philip Tonge, Ellen Corby, Susan Morrow, Christine White, Linda Guderman, Johnathan Kidd, Dorothy Morris, Howard Hoffman.
"So terrifying we have to insure your life!"
"See it with someone who can carry you home!"
When a small town doctor is believed to have allowed his wife and sister to die while in his care, a plot is hatched to try and scare the doctor to death by making him believe that his young daughter has been kidnapped and buried alive.
The wordiness of the script creates tedium, while the constant use of flashbacks only causes confusion. Any attempt at humour is badly blundered.
Castle's promotional gimmick involved giving away Lloyds of London life insurance policies in the event that the film fatally frightens anyone in the audience.
The novel's author, Theo Durrant is a psuedonym for the combined talents of Terry Adler, Anthony Boucher, Eunice Mays Botd, Florence Austern Faulkner, Allen Hymson, Cary Lucas, Dane Lyon, Lenore Glen Offord, Virginia Rath, Virginia Shattuck, Darwin L. Teilhet and William Worley.

ORGY OF THE DEAD (1965/FOG. Distribution)
Aka: ORGY OF THE VAMPIRES.
Credits: Dir: Stephen C. Apostoloff; Sc: Ed Wood Jnr.
Cast: Tor Johnson, Criswell, Texas Starr, Lon Chaney Snr., Bunny Glaser, Fawn Silver.
A couple researching information in a cemetery are captured and tied to posts by the Master of the Dead and the Princess of Darkness who make them watch "sinners" being judged and sentenced. They witness a topless blonde slave owner being whipped by her slaves, a large breasted murderess marry a skeleton and another woman is turned into a gold statue. A werewolf and a mummy also appear.
A dated film with ample nudity from the strippers hired as the cast. Scripted by the same man responsible for Night of the Ghouls and Plan 9 From Outer Space who shows no improvement with this fiasco.

Credits: Dir. & Sc: David Durston; Prod: Jerry Gross & Harry Kaplen; Ph: Jacques Demarecaux; Art: Charles Baxter; Mus: Clay Pitts.

Satanic hippies give a man LSD as part of their sacrificial ritual so his vengeful son injects the blood of a rabid dog into meat pies which he serves to the hippie community. Instead of killing them as planned the infected pies turns them into rampaging maniacs.
Due to the controversy the film caused it has been re-edited into what is now an incoherent muddle.
Double billed with I Eat Your Skin.

RASPUTIN, THE MAD MONK (1966/Hammer/7 Arts) 91mins. UK.
Credits: Dir: Don Sharp; Prod: Anthony Nelson Keys; Sc: John Elder (Anthony Hinds); Ph: Michael Reed; Ed: James Needs & Roy Hyde; Art: Don Mingaye; Des: Bernard Robinson; Mu: Roy Ashton; Mus: Don Banks.
Cast: Christopher Lee, Barbara Shelley, Richard Pasco, Francis Mathews, Suzan Farmer, Dinsdale Landon, Rene Asherson, Nicholas Penell, Alan Tilvern, Joss Ackland, John Welsh, Derek Francis.
The story of the vicious and lascivious monk that infiltrated Tsar Nicholas II's Russian court and gained favour with the Tsarina, (Asherson), by using hypnotism, then influencing the court and making decisions that affected the nation. When attempts are made on Rasputin's life, he proves to be exceedingly difficult to kill.
Utilising the set leftover from Dracula, Prince of Darkness, Hammer takes numerous liberties with historical fact, but Lee's tour de force performance makes this one to watch. Rasputin chops off a man's hand in a fight, and throws acid in another's face.
The real Rasputin was finally killed after many attempts by the faithful captains of the court, only after being stabbed and poisoned several times did the monk actually succumb to death.
Male theatre patrons were presented with "Rasputin beards" to wear.
