Right out of the box, it comes to game prefernces - for most people, that's a win for the DS, though the PSP has some advantages when it comes to media and stuff.
Once you purchase additional things, a DS can literally do everything a PSP can except emulate PS1 games.
For me, DS all the way.

Yes, it can.
However, it requires an addon that costs, depending on which one you get, from $35 or so to upwards of $90. So basically, with that addon it costs around as much as a PSP - with a PSP I believe you have to buy an additional UMD or whatever to store your media, same deal here - the different addons use Micro SD, SD, or Compact Flash cards.
I personally got the M3 Perfect Lite, which is one of the more expensive options. It fits flush in the GBA compartment of my DSL, takes MicroSD cards, and can play anything I throw at it, though videos require converting.
It definitley isn't as intuitive as getitng a PSP to do those things, I don't think, but if you do some research of your own you'll see it really isn't as intimidating as it sounds.
Sackboy
02-26-2007, 10:17 AM
It's not a UMD you need for storing media, just the Memory stick duos. Right now the PSP entertainment pack comes with a 1 GB stick. I guess if you really want to compare the 2 right out of the box you can always check both of these sites out.

Okay, sorry, I didn't know. :)
I should also point out that with the gba slot things for the DS that allow it to play Music and Videos and whatnot, you can also use illegaly acquired ROMs of DS games, if pirating is your thing.
Also, pricing wise:
PSP : ~$200
PSP Entertainment Pack (1 movie, 1 game, 1 GB memorystick): ~$250
DSL : ~$130
DSL w/ M3 Perfect SD and 1gb microSD card: ~$240
I mean, it really comes down to preference in the end.

I find it funny that in the section of DS Homebrew it says very few commercial games are playable right now, when the truth is at least with the M3 only 7 games have issues at the moment: 1 is only a problem some people have, 4 of them have ways to fix the problem, 1 works but slowly, and 1 just doesn't work. The rest work perfectly.

Next Generation PSP
In the latest edition of PSM (PlayStation Magazine) says that Sony is set to release a second generation PSP in Japan by March 2007. Citing unnamed sources, the publication says that Sony has made a deal with Samsung to include 8GB of built-in NAND flash memory in the new PSP. The magazine also says that the new models with incorporate a built-in camera and that the PSP will allow users to stream live video to the PlayStation 3, according to an anonymous source. The feature, which will utilize the PSP's Wi-Fi support, will be marketed as the new way to chat with friends while on the go. It is said that the new version of the handheld will be thinner and lighter than the current version. PSM states that "From all indications, the next PSP will have the same graphic and sound capabilities of the current system."
Rumor. Even I don't believe that.
In my opinion, all these fights about the media uses on handheld consoles arent really neccesary. I would prefer to buy an iPod to listen music and watch videos over a DS or a PSP. MP3 players must be small and easy to use, and on this part none of the handheld consoles can be compared to mp3 players. Also the storage capabilities are just too limited.

I use my PSP for everything except music. I have a Sony Ericsson W810i phone (

) that works as a perfect MP3 player with a 1GB memory stick. If I had an iPod I would totally use it for music too. I agree that MP3 players must be small and easy to use, the PSP is too big and bulky as an MP3 player, unless that was your only option, but it works just fine for everything else - I can't complain about the size. But I'm totally happy myself with the line up of games. But hey, some people like pepperoni pizza, others like combo.

Yet, I must admit the PSP graphics kill anyother handheld and even PS1/Early PS2 games. Still the only games I found fun at all on the PSP was GTA, and MGS. The games are not impressive so the DS DEFINITIELY wins with the Poke'Mon and Final Fantasy games.

Personally, I'll side the DS. I have a DS. Sure it doesn't do media without the M3 or those crappy GameBoy Advance Video carts (I will admit I bought a GBA Video cart... But it was for the sake of science, I swear!). But then again, that's what my Zen Vision M is for (and it holds much more stuff than the biggest capacity SD cards that are currently in the market could ever hold). I'm also a touchscreen maniac, so the DS naturally appeals to me. Lastly, the DS actually have games I would play, and can play GBA games I would play (i.e. the Final Fantasy Advance series, Tetris DS, and some other stuff).

DS all the way. Personally, if I am going to get a handheld gaming system, it will be just that: a GAMING system. If I want to play mp3s or watch videos, I'll buy a Sanza or Ipod. If I want to surf the net, I'll use a computer. The point is, the DS was created for the express purpose of gaming. The PSP is a "jack of all trades, master of none" that, while I do like its stylish graphics, doesn't seem to be putting it's full potency in gaming. Not to mention, the DS is innovative, with touch screen and TWO screens. Although, admittedly, I am waiting to see graphically-shining RPGs like Monster Hunter: Freedom on the DS, rather than cartoony 2D stuff like Children of Mana (don't get me wrong, the CoM's gameplay rocks, and it is one of the best RPGs I have played, with awesome anime-style cutscenes and the like, but I think I speak for many when I say the graphics could have been ramped up to the DS's standards), we see that it was, again, built for gaming. Gaming done right.

As for Pokemon... while the show is gay like the San Francisco mayor, the game is like one of the best ideas conceived for an RPG. And with the Wi-fi compatible series coming out in April, it's all gonna get even better.

What I'd really like to see though is the next Phantasy Star Online... a dungeon hack with uber graphics and huge possibilities, and the ability to go on raids with your friends(which initially piqued my interest for CoM). Yes, something akin to CoM with more options (a better variety of weapons, armor, classes, and spells, anybody?), better graphics, and better playability value (no going through the same motions in the same rooms in the same dungeons all the time).

Heh, a psp fans rebuttle to that would be; "You could already do that on psp. On DS you have to go out and spend an extra $80 just to get the media player, psp comes built in."
But what these fools fail to realise, is the psp already costs $100 (or was it $200...) more (at least it did when my friend made that argument). Therefore you're still saving $20 (or $120 if psp is $200 more) for something with all the features of the psp.

The only thing that really appeals to me about the PSP is the ability to emulate PS1 games. Other then that, I prefer the DS which I own one.
As to the whole music/video/game playing for it, its really cheap to do it nowadays. For about $180.00 (including the purchase of a DS of course) you can have all of that.
The M3 Simply goes for around $40.00, which lets you play DS backups, Homebrew apps, Music, Videos and whatever else it can support. You need a microSD card for it which can be found on many places for just $10-12 (1gb). 1gb can hold more than 20 DS games depending on the game file size.

It's really a matter of personal opinion on which is better. My personal pick would be the Nintendo DS because it has more games that appeal to me and it's backwards compatible with GBA games so that expands the game library far beyond that of the PSP. The DS is getting it's own web browser pretty soon so the PSP's web functionality isn't really necessary for me at this point.

Is the drop worldwide or US only? Because I've been planning to get a PSP to just to see what's the fuss is all about (although I always had and will always love my DS), and it's no point for me if the drop's only for the US market.
that's good. i was planning on buying a second psp for myself in the future. but i'd rather get a second DS instead so i'll wait for the DS price drop.

Since I own Both, I would say if you like Pokemon, the DS. If you like Hardcore games and racing etc and other fun games and media, PSP is the way to go. In the US they dropped the price to $169 USD!

Not really. I'm not into poking man, but I still own a DS. Mostly use it for Final Fantasy VI Advance. So yeah, if you want a cheap handheld capable of playing classic Final Fantasy remakes (which you don't already have a GBA for) and if you like touchscreens (I do. Why I have two other PDAs) or voice recognition, go for a DS.

Well, fun is a subjective thing.

Yeah, too bad in Malaysia these things still costs RM728, which IMO is still a little too much for a machine that doesn't have a touchscreen and whose microphone is sold separately, and whose software (especially UMD movies) can still be region locked. Hopefully the upcoming computer fair would see a drop in price.

Oooh. That still stinks. In USD, isn't it around 210USD if I'm right?

Right. I keep forgetting. RM728=roughly US$210(assuming a conversion rate of roughly 3.5 to 1). Thanks for reminding me that I should always put in the US currency to make things easier on the other readers.

I definitely prefer my DS, as a big fan of Square and Atlus it's very nice to see support from them on it, and you can't really go wrong with some Nintendo games as well. Unique games like Trauma Center and Elite Beat Agents are a nice refreshing experience. I'm also a fan of adventure games and the DS seems to be reviving this almost lost genre.

Most racing and sports games are anything but hardcore, they are mainstream games that appeal to a wide casual gaming audience. That definitely seems to be PSP's biggest audience.

The only reeason a PSP would be worth buying is if you could get one with the old firmware that can play PS1 roms imo~

We do get pre-modded PSPs over here, but unfortunately they cost way more - RM1088(US$310) last I checked.

Well, it really depends on what type of games you play. I own a 3.30 PSP and I am perfectly happy with it.

DS over PSP
PSP is just not good.

Yeah. I find there's a couple of good games on psp. but there's not enough for me to waste $300+ to get it. DS, however, has many appealing games, and the cost is much less. Of course, i've been a long time nintendo 'fan', so my opinion is kinda bias. Although i still like sony and their playstation consoles. It's just the x-box i hate lol.

Well, then you must not have the same video game intrests as me. And that is completely fine. I am glad that you are enjoying your DS. Heck, like they always say, "The system is only as good as the games that are on it."
PS: I also hate the x-box (except for halo)

You are missing the point. I never even said that the DS Sucks. I like my DS (It's okay). Also, the DS DOESN'T EVEN HAVE AN ANALOG STICK, so why are you saying that 1 analog stick sucks, well and least the PSP actually HAS an analog stick!

Well, if you like square, then keep on playing your DS! Although it may sound like I am, I'm not trying to intimidate you DS owners here. All I'm doing is explaining that there is no point in continuing this debate. Eventually, this thread will be locked to to "Flame wars", "Offensive language", and having no meaning to continue because, by the looks of things now, there is absolutely no point in continuing if it's going to start and arguement. I thought this thread was to give advice to someone deciding between a PSP or a DS, not PSP fanboys vs DS fanboys?!

Safer Sepiroth - I totally agree.
As for the web browser tho, those who can't wait and have large amounts of dough can already find the Japanese or European versions of the browser on eBay or their local importers. I haven't yet, but will pretty soon.

It may have an analog stick, but it's kinda pathetic. I say, if you're gonna have an analog stick, atleast have a decent one, don't waste our time with some midgety thing. I originally thought it was a speaker lol. It's better to have no analog stick, than that crappy thing

Well, to that I say, I LOVE the PSP analog sick! I even modded 6 dreamcast controllers to use the PSP ananlog sticks!
