Federico and Giovanna is a young couple in crisis, he (Ugo Tognazzi) plays the son of an honest anti-fascist man from the 1930s (also played by Tognazzi), who has suffered greatly because of his beliefs, because of his ideas of freedom and justice. She is the daughter of a very rich industrialist, someone quite superficial. He wants to shed all the feelings of compassion that seize him, he does not want to be tormented in the same way as his father. Tognazzi rushes to marry the spoiled daughter (Jean Seberg), a rich man. The misery that attends this pairing leads Tognazzi to defect from his newly acquired and protected lifestyle. He returns to his father's house in the city, Giovanna follows him. Giovanna comes into contact with a world of real things and feelings, so different from the empty world in which she has lived that they make reconciliation possible with her husband. Also Federico, visiting his father, finds his dignity again, losing the protection of his father-in-law. Throughout the film, flashbacks are used that show the reasons that led Tognazzi to imprison his true feelings.
