So another die-hard FF7 fan is making a fool of himself. What a shocking event this is.

This may be one of the most retarded reasons I have ever heard a moronic fanboy state for liking FFVII, you really are an idiot, and posting 3 times in succession to say the same thing? fuck off.

Not true at all. The freedom you have in determining your character's actions and personality make VTM-B much more a part of that genre than the Jap adventure games masquerading as RPGs.
Well it's not based on turn by turn... that was my general idea in my comment. let's say Action RPG, OK ?
I hate now "statical" games such as true RPGs (final fantasy, ...).
I like to be, as in Star wars KOTOR good or bad !
As in real life everything is "gray" and not black or white.
I'm just pointing out a fundamental flaw in your definition of a role-playing game. When you look at the origins of the genre and the defining characteristics of the early RPGs, it shows that games like the Final Fantasy series are actually much closer to adventure games than RPGs.
In that sense, KOTOR and VTM-B can be classified as actual RPGs, while Final Fantasy and its ilk are adventure games that ignorant Japanese people called RPGs simply because they didn't know what a role-playing game actually is.

The problem is RPG, in contrary to other game types, is a very broad category. The two main types of it are Western rpgs (what most of us consider "true" rpgs) and Eastern rpgs (the FFs, BOFs, SMTs...).
The two have different approaches and differing level of freedom/plot/gameplay... Afterall, when it first came out, Diablo I was called an RPG, and now, everyone admits it is rather a hack n slash. An even bigger example, these horrors called MMO"RPG"s are considered rpgs despite the complete lack of any role play (ok, maybe by the munchkin definition they are).
Arguing about what game is an rpg is something that can last a VERY long time.
That aside, my favoroute RPG ever was Baldurs Gate II: Shadows of Amn (+ Throne of Bhaal). The plot was great, the party members were interesting, you weren't just doing a succession of dungeon crawls with a half assed reason. The only bad side was that I never really found the villains all too great.
This is the game is use as my standard when playing other rpgs. Needless to say the good ones are far and few between. NWN I was a massive dissapointment, The Elder Scrowls series just felt boring. Good thing Kotor 1 and 2 were here to catch up. NWN II was better but was not quite yet as good. I still await for the game that will bring back the sensations procured by BG2. (just fwi, i also played Plascape Torment and loved it).
The term is only broad because the Japs literally have no idea what they're talking about, and they've infected the rest of the world with their ignorance. When D&D came out over there, they had never seen anything of the type and had no idea that all the gameplay systems were adapted from strategy games, so they were unaware that the real defining characteristic of the RPG genre is free-form character development.
There's a very simple way to determine which games actually are RPGs. Just figure out if they allow you to define your character's personality traits, actions, motives, etc. In that sense, due to the capability being there for those few who choose to make use of it, MMORPGs are named correctly, or at least not wildly incorrectly.
I'll give you this much. You have good taste. BG2 is still the standard I hold every RPG up to, and Throne of Bhaal is probably the best expansion ever made. I wasn't as disappointed by NWN as you were - I mostly liked it - but I will agree with you on the Elder Scrolls games being rather dull.

Guess you're right about the japs and rpgs. But if we look from a chronological point of view, the findings are a little different. It seems unfortunately, the common (but misconcieved in my view) definition of rpg is anything where you level up. Historically that is true since early rpgs were just computer adaptations of tabletop rules (Eye of the Beholder would be the most fragrant example). Early examples of things called rpgs (Dungeon Master, Lands of Lore, Eye of the Beholder) are mainly what today we call today hack'n'slash.
It is only later when having choices on what to do that the modern concept or rpg games, more true to the tabletop definition, appeared. The earliest example I can remember (I might be wrong or ignorant of others) is Lands of Lore II where Luther had a lot of moral choices to do in the game. The one that really boosted the genre was Fallout (happy memories) and gave a LOT of freedom (and Fallout II took it to the next level).
Now, if we look at eastern RPGs (I'm giving them this name, so that we know what we're talking about), they fit the conditions to be rpgs under the early computerised definition of rpg. They have leveling and stats. If we use the "true" definition of rpgs (the tabletop ones I mean) then yes, I agree with you, Eastern RPGs don't fit that definition.

My favorite RPG is actually Super Mario RPG. The battle system in that game is the best imo. The idea that you can see the enemies and if you touch them you jump into a turn-based battle is great. It isn't like random encounters where you get mad because you take 2 steps and BAM encounter. You can actually choose if you want to fight or not yet still have the turn-based battle type as well.

For me it would be a tie between Final Fantasy 8 and Phantasy Star 4. Final Fantasy 8 because it was the first RPG I ever played, and Phantasy Star 4 because I just got done playing it not too long ago and it was the most fun and enjoyment I have had playing an RPG in a good while, probably since FF8.

Mmm. To address Prak before posting this...
While I do find myself in agreement with the main thrust of your argument (Eastern "RPGs" not truly belonging to the RPG genre, as most possess no real self-insertion on the part of the player), I will say that I tend to call these RPGs anyway, though I freely acknowledge the difference between the two subsects. I use the common-used RPG definition to refer to these games for ease of understanding at this point because it is known by most what is being referred to, even if there is disagreement that they fall under said category. (This being said, I'd be inclined to call the games -you- refer to as RPGs as "traditional", myself, and view the newer RPGs as a newer, "contemporary" genre.)
While I am fond of the traditional RPG, then, to use the definition I just established, they do not - most of the time - tend to be most enjoyable for me. (This is partially because, if I'm going to indulge in such a genre, I'm going to be picky as hell about the setting/characters/ad nauseum. Exception goes to D&D which I play on occasion as a social game and enjoy as such; the interaction, being by definition a true MMORPG, making it interesting enough to bypass my pickiness >_>;.) While Arcanum/Morrowind/what I've played of Baldur's Gate series are by no means bad, I just don't enjoy them as much, I find.
As for contemporary RPGs, for which I think this thread was intended by the creator if not by all of its inhabitants... (Warning: I'm a gameplay freak, and thus tend to glide over plot issues unless they are egregious. Just FYI.)
9.8: Persona 2: Eternal Punishment [PSX] - It has its problems, I won't deny that. but. It's... pretty much my ideal style of game. Also, "WHUP-ASS TIME!" never gets old as a battlecry.
9.4: Final Fantasy Tactics [PSX] - The plot makes me twitch a bit. The character customization is pretty bloody awesome, and scaling randoms means there's challenge even outside plot.
9.4: Breath Of Fire: Dragon Quarter [PS2] - I can't justify this. It's just the sort of game I really got into.
9.1: Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne [PS2] - Plot? What plot? Gameplay-only ranking, here. That plus style kinda made the game for me.
9.0: Legend Of Mana [PSX] - See BoF: DQ.
8.8: Phantom Brave [PS2] - Morona is stupid. Gameplay is amusing and easily broken, yet with challenge. I'll take it.
8:7: Final Fantasy V [SNES, GBA] - See FFT. Plot has no right to exist, I enjoyed the battle system.
8.4: Digital Devil Saga 2 [PS2] - Made playing the first game actually worth it! Also, one of the few games with a plot I liked.
8.2: *Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2 (SRT:OG2) [GBA] - Arguably a strategy game, not a contemp. RPG, but I find the game quite interesting/challenging.
8.1: Wild Arms 4 [PS2] - Again, generally cool gameplay, plot wasn't offensive.
Yeah, this was taken from my list on another site, copy-pasted here w/ reasoning.

You guys seriously need to play other RPG's than Final Fantasy. There are so many better than the series.
I'm not sure which is the best; very difficult for me to decide. Chrono Trigger is always going to be at the top of the list for me. 10 different endings, being able to replay the game with all your weapons and stats and such, the amount of time you have to put into the game, the storyline. This game always comes to mind when I consider the best RPG ever.
agreed, not to mention the PS1 version, with 30+ different endings and anime cutscenes.

I am gonna have to disagree here. The utter lack of difficulty in that game is quite a bit of a turnoff. Plus, the combat is far more reminiscent of the early 90's side-scrolling beat 'em ups than an RPG.

I'm just going through Chrono Trigger and it's amazingly good, so I say it has earned its place in Legend.
Morrowind is a big contender, because of the music, and the ambiance of it all. I just love Morrowind all around.
Breath of Fire 3 has some great music, a truly memorable soundtrack. Never gotten far into it, I have it on my list of "Games to Play." I'm sure it'll be one of the great RPGs I've played, depending on what I've heard.
I have a soft spot for Front Mission 3. It's the manifestation of Linear Gameplay but customization differs far from that. I really do enjoy playing this game and it's up there on my list.
My last one, Deus Ex: The Conspiracy. Just a great game, period.

I have played and finished over 1400 games and I will have to say that my favorite RPGs are in this order:
1. Final Fantasy VIII - The world was so well developed. I hated the fact that you couldn't go into towns on the 4th disc because the ending movie took up so much space. The fact that when all was said an done, I liked every single character on this game, even Seifer smiled because things turned out well for him too. The junction system offered the most versatility of any battle system in an RPG to date although it confused the heck out of a lot of people (I really feel for those that never understood the full ramifications of the system). I thoroughly enjoyed nearly aspect of the story and the fact that you could get almost every item two different ways was awesome. The card game was pretty fun and didn't suck like the card game on Final Fantasy IX. If you really took the time to understand the world by reading the information on the computers, etc. it opened your eyes to all the detail in the world. I was able to see what happened to everybody at the end of the game and I felt perfect satisfaction with the ending of a game for the second time in my life.
2. Lunar: The Silver Star - In order to fully appreciate this game you need to play both the Sega CD and Playstation versions because together they really compliment each other and solidify the world where the other lacks. I absolutely loved the characters! They were rich with personality and humor and yet even the youngest of elementary school kids and oldest of adults could relate to them. This game is like the adventure you always dreamed of going on as a child. Even the white dragon tells you that diamonds are actually made of his shi* and doesn't understand why humans prize them so much! From the Sega CD version, the sheer scale of the Magic Guild of Vane and all the information there in the libraries and not forgetting Damon's Spire together they paint the most incredible picture of the world of Lunar and you see that detail realized in the Playstation version. From the scene with Alex playing the ocarina to the boat scene with Luna, Alex discovering that Ghaleon is the Magic Emperor himself, and Alex overcoming countless trials and sadness to become the Dragon Master and lay it all on the line to save his childhood companion...this game has all the makings of what should be in a game with extremely high production values. When I finished this game I was certain that nothing could ever rival the emotions that the ending evokes...until I finished Final Fantasy VIII. However, Lunar: The Silver Star is so close to Final Fantasy VIII that I sometimes feel I have a hard time naming my favorite but I think that the more humanistic styled characters of Final Fantasy VIII is the key in keeping it as my favorite since it is a little easier to relate to someone who looks more human. I played all the Japanese versions for the Mega CD, Sega Saturn, Playstation, and Game Boy Advance just to understand the depth of this game's story and it adds a whole new dimension since Working Designs changed some important information in the English translation which comes from sub-characters. Not to mention the fact that Luna's song on the boat in the English version is completely different so you never understand her feelings which have started sprouting an almost naive love toward Alex like you do in the Japanese version. The Game Boy Advance version really doesn't add much to the world of Lunar although it makes some drastic changes and these changes are also reflected in the 4 volume set of novels for Lunar: The Silver Star. If you have not experienced this game, I recommend it to anyone from ages 10+ so that you can really understand it. My utmost appreciation goes out to Keisuke Shigematsu who penned this rich story and whom I have had the personal opportunity to speak with about this particular work.
3. Tales of Phantasia - PSP version is the best out of the SNES, PSX, GBA, and PSP versions. Once you play this game, you will understand why it is so awesome and had so many top-selling remakes.
4. Tales of Rebirth - PSP version is the best out of the PS2 and PSP versions. It is hard not to think this game is better than Tales of Phantasia since the story is absolutely relatable to anyone who has ever been treated differently because of their race or how they look. This is by far the best "Tales of" game since Tales of Phantasia.
5. Wanderers from Ys III - PS2 version is the best one out of the NES, Genesis, SNES, Turbo Duo, PC, and PS2 versions. My favorite Ys and an awesome story with awesome music, and best of all awesome gameplay.
5. YS 1 & 2 Eternal - PS2 version is the best one out of the NES, Turbo Duo, Sega Saturn, PC, and PS2 versions. A must play for any RPG fan. These two games fit together as one game so you have to play both to understand the whole story.
6. Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana 2 - This is a must play and the best game Gust has ever put out.
7. Phantasy Star IV - This should be your first and last experience with the Phantasy Star series although the PS2 remake of the original Phantasy Star was quite good. The production values for the time this game was released were unsurpassed on the Sega Genesis.
8. Eternal Arcadia (Skies of Arcadia) - Hands down the best RPG Sega made since Phantasy Star IV. Playing is believing how incredibly awesome this title is.
9. The Legend of Heroes IV: A tear of Vermillion - PSP version is the best out of the PSX, PC, and PSP versions. This story is awesome and keeps you interested from start to finish (except for the small part where you have to collect donations). Excellent visuals and music as well. A must play for any PSP owner.
10. The Legend of Heroes V: Cagesong of the Ocean - PSP version is the best out of the PSX, PC, and PSP versions. Humorous, light-hearted and definitely for those who want to revisit a "going on a quest" type of game from their childhood. High production values and those who love Lunar: The Silver Star will most definitely love this one too.
11. Tales of Destiny 2 (The real one for PS2 and PSP not to be confused with the PSX title, Tales of Eternia which was called Tales of Destiny 2 in America for some unknown reason) - This is another great game penned by the great Keisuke Shigematsu, the script writer of Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar: Eternal Blue for all those Lunar fans. The last boss on this game is a pain in the as* but other than that, an awesome game.
12. Dragon Quest 2 - The Super Famicom version is the best out of the NES and this one. Definitely a must play for all kids.
13. Etc. etc.
There is so many other games I would like to mention which come to mind that are not RPGs like Soukaigi, Dual Hearts, Tokimeki Memorial Vol. 2 - The Colorful Lovesong, Vagrant Story, Ace Combat 5, Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Super Castlevania IV, Full Metal Alchemist 2, Fatal Frame, Fatal Frame: The Crimson *********, Fatal Frame: The Tormented, Shadow of the Colossus, Onimusha 2, Summon Night 2, Summon Night: Ecstasy, The Legend of Zelda, Zwei!!, and the list goes on for miles...but as for some of my favorite RPGs, I hope you get a chance to play them sometime.

This Game is the greatest classic on the Super NES and bitterly unknown, because it was never released in the USA. But however the story has so much epic touches, emotional moments and unbelievable good music that anyone who plays it the first time 'll be shocked whats possible on 16bit consoles (and without rendered sequences or other crap like that.)
The gameplay is a amazing mix of Adventure and RPG which is really fun to play. You find very much parallels to the real history of human and earth (with a view religional things in it -> no realease in America) and the player feels very connected to the game, beacuse you create or affect everything.
For me it is the greatest game ever made. Terranigma has only 2 different Endings but I played about 9 times to the end.
The best Classical RPG - Chrono Trigger SNES (only jap/us)
The game was never released in europe, so I got it very late into my hands. But this game was absolutely amazing! I was overrolled from the largeness of this game. The tough story and good Ideas make it to the best round- based RPG of the SNES and all time. Time traveling was never transformed into a game as good as in Chrono Trigger. The Nine Endings gave it the last kick to perfectness.

The best Tactic RPG - Final Fantasy Tactics Advance GBA
I spendet about 250 hours on this game to get every mission, every secret and so on. AND IT NEVER GOT BORING! This is amazing and rarely seen on other titles... The only problem was the childish story of this game.
After you have done special things in the game it gets very easy too, but no problem, the game is pure motivation and pure fun. The job and skill learning system is the key to it. But the great sounds and beatiful graphics will do their best, too. (Be carefull: The sequel A2 on DS is not as good as the first title)
The best Action RPG - Front Mission: Gun Hazard SNES (only jap)
I cant tell you very much about the story, because I hate emulation and played the orignal, but the gameplay of this game is absolutely great! Do you know the Super NES Game Cybernator? Sure you do. Just keep that title in mind but freaking bigger and with RPG element like leveling the characters, mech parts and equip yourself with others. Not only the streng of your mech will change - you can see it in the graphics. It has a ton of levels with a lot of graphical highlights, enemies, bosses, buddies, different missions and background settings. Did I mention? Its a Square game ;) And yes, its fun as hell!

Best RPG I've played? Uh, I'm not sure. I don't like many games, let alone RPG's x_x
I USED to like Leveling Up and such in an RPG mod for Unreal Tournament 2004 (PC), but not anymore. I played that same mod for about 3 years.
I also have a game called MapleStory (PC) that happens to still be installed that I've completely lost interest in Leveling up in that game too now.
I used to play others like Pokemon too, but completely lost interest in those games as well.
So I guess I don't like any RPG's anymore x_x

Suikoden II for PS. Not very good graphics, not very good jogability, but different endings, some unusual thematics for a game, good variety of characters and, finally, a great development of a great plot(the story is not another RPG cliche).

I think Planescape: Torment is the only phenomenally story-heavy RPG I've played that actually worked as a game. I think it's mostly due to being given lots of dialog options, so you never felt like you were just sitting there reading text for hours (even though you were).
But yeah, the battle system was somewhat of a let down, especially when you consider it was based on the same engine as Baldur's Gate.

Hmm...Final Fantasy 6 has to be one of the best RPGs I've ever played...it's a close tie with Chrono Trigger I would have to say. They each bring up great memories. So hard to choose...PS1? FF7, Xenogears, and Star Ocean. PS2 all time I would probably say FF12.

NOTHING can compare to the ORIGINAL Lunar 1 & 2 on Sega CD...best rpg & gaming experience I've ever had hands down...The IMHO remakes on PSX did the series no justice & were huge steps back, not so much Eternal Blue Complete as it stayed mostly the same but the Silver Star Story Complete was a disgrace. The graphics driven rpgs of today dont even compare to the originals & are a disgrace in everyway. If u cant get yourself a Sega CD do yourself a favor & get the Roms, I promise u, it will be in your top 5 if your a true rpg fan.
Honorable mentions
FFX - Cant stand the FF Series, FF7 is the most overated game all time, any genre but really enjoyed 10. Sephiroth would get his ass handed to him by Lunars Ghaleon any day of the week & twice on Sunday.
Elder Scolls Oblivion - Not my typical rpg but great game nonetheless
Tales of Vesperia - Got it a month ago for my bday & still havent found a chance to play but it looks great
Star Ocean - I think it was 2 that was my fave but both 1 & 2 were decent rpgs
Shining the Holy Ark - Really good Sega CD rpg that gets no credit at all....ever
Shining Force CD & Growlanser Generations - Not true rpgs I know but were good games nonetheless
Suikoden - I believe 2 was my fave, 3 was good also tho
Baldurs Gate Icewind Dale - Decent enuff to be mentioned
Fallout 2 & 3 - 2 was good, 3 is really good altho not my style at all
Breath of Fire - 3 was ok
Lost Odyssey - Only a few hours into it but like most modern rpgs its letting me down but has potential to get ok maybe so Im not giving up on it yet

Persona 2: Innocent Sin. Even if it does break my heart every time with all the sadness. It has the most interesting story i've ever come across, ever. Sadly, not that many RPGs with stories THAT deep. And Eternal Punishment just wasn't as good.

Haven't played as many as a lot of people on here, but here are my favorites:
Zelda: OoT (since everyone is listing, I will too, even though I don't think it is 'really' an rpg, but oh well)
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga - Mario & Luigi are perfect in this humorous and rich RPG game. I really want to play Partners In Time as well.
Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom - Only one in the series I have played, but it is soooo addictive. Can't wait for the next one to come out.
The Dark Spire (DS) - Just got this game and I already love it, even though it's realllly hard. But it is awesome :D
Lost Kingdoms (GC) - Rented this a really long time ago, but I loved the card combat system.

Yup. SO3.
First game of the Star Ocean series I played and the one that made me fall in love with the series. Now playing through the First Departure remake on PSP and loving every second. However, I do feel they cocked up somewhat with the SO4 for 360. Monotonous little girls do not, for a good game, make. Nor do cat girls either. Gauntleted maniacs are alright in my book though.

The Final Fantasy series was amazing to me. The Final Fantasy series captured my heart for years of my childhood and formed loyaties within me so stong I thought my favoratism would forever be unbreakable. How could it not? The game series had grown as I had and I'd been an encaptured witness to each one. But at about 15 years old, the day came where my developed awareness of the world around me and all the important and prodominant issues concerning it would make room for a more worthy stimulant as far as gaming was concerned. Don't get me wrong, each installment of the Final Fantasy Series was unique and most posessed a special quality that I cherish and will forever love but Xenogears, (Gears, not Saga,)was personally a welcome and much needed new experience that would effect me in ways I never ever thought A VIDEO GAME was capable of. Every aspect of it tapped into the depth of my dormant psyche waking within it a more active cycle of thought. Perhaps more important than this, it delved suprisingly deep into the depths of my emotion. An area of myself not easily breached from such outside sources. The following insight, theory, and reasoning for why Xenogears is the single most ingenious game in my eyes is devided into topics. Story, Characters -Sub Category:Villians-, Music, and Battle System. Though much more can be touched upon, these topics reign the most recognized in my mind. So let's get started.
STORY
First and foremost is that of the story of Xenogears and any loyal fan will agree. Without ruining a single detail of it's mastery I will explain. Never before have I played a video game that touched upon so very many issues the real word we live in today faces. The difference in levels of society, A hierarchy of chosen few who choose to manipulate each of these societies through fear and deciept, how through such action confusion and betrayal is unavoidable, religeous conflict and dominance, the mess of politics, the labarynth of the human mind and how easily twisted it becomes as well as special pschological problems that can develope within it, and so much more. The pace was mostly smooth, each chapter blending into the next without the blink of an eye. Never again do I expect to be graced with a story so powerful and relevant within an RPG.
CHARACTERS
Without great characters, a promising story might as well be an empty shell with no substance to command attention and form it's entirety, and the characters of Xenogears are no exeption to this rule. They are the heart and soul of the story and stand as beacons of the genious of the game. They were all real on some level, posessing personal history and path incredibly shocking but also emotions that seem almost tangible they are so easy to relate to. The bond between each really brings to light the backbone of friendship and trust and how both of these can sometimes be compromised for the ideal of something greater. Empathy between player and characters is undeniable and I myself hope it to be fateful. The "villians" of Xenogears are indeed included in this description which deems them even more interesting in their entirety. Save for one "villian" that I know of, an in depth past accompanies each making thier downfall into corruption understandable and therefore questioning how evil they actually are. Though their acts are undeniably terrible, their motive and drive must be taken into account. Such quality makes for great characters. (Sephiroth for instance). I, for one, will not easily forget what each character had to offer and the ones that opened my eyes to things I had not thought about before will always have aplace in my heart.
MUSIC
Ah yes, Xenogears OST. Composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. Yes, the same who wrote for Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Xenosaga. Of course all of his works are amazing. I owe much of my sanity to this man and much of it is in debt to the XG OST. The story, characters, and music should all work hand in hand and this game is a prime example of the fact for as stunning, epic, and emotionally stimulating as the rest of the game is, the scores match it forming to it appropriately. Yasunori Mitsuda has never let me down for even without playing the games first one can simply derive the emotional context of it through his masterwork. Xenogears was the best example of this though I might be being slightly biased. ;) Simply breathtaking.
BATTLE SYSTEM
For the day and age the game was created, the battle system was quite unique. Not only being able to engage in combat on foot, but in large mechanically manipulated machines called "Gears"? Awesome! The combo idea though slightly repetative by today's standards was exiting back in the day! Up until that point battle within an RPG had been slightly generic give or take a few exeptions here and there but Xenogears nailed it once again with battle system. Some might compare it so Evangelion but don't ask me to specify and comment. I never watched Evangelion so I have no say in the matter.
It's crawled a bit past my bedtime now so I will move to conclude this everlasting post of mine but I must add the following. Xenogears was brilliant. Each aspect is worthy of some sort of praise in my opinion though I realize that everyone has a right to their own even if by chance, it differs from my own. I just speak from a personal standpoint when I state that the game changed so much inside of me that words may not even be able to express. Please forgive the passion that spurred such a burst of lengthiness but the topic was such a temptation I could not help myself. :P
Alright, time to go catch some Zzz's!
Yo , this shit almost brought tears to my eye!! lol!! Your so right man, its such a good game and just such a good story...
Doesnt it just amaze you that out of almost 30 pages of posts only like 5 people have even mentioned Xenogears? Thats like less than any game....
Even people that normally like good games and listed some of my favorite games.... no mention of xenogears anywhere.
Guess it is going to stay an underrated classic forever ;)

Anyone ever play Legend of Legaia (ps1)? It came out right after FFVII, so it got skipped by a lot of people, but it's certainly my favorite rpg.
It had a unique battle system where you input commands to punch and kick, and turned those into various combo moves, or you could summon forms of monsters that you can absorb after killing them. All in a turn based system. Very entertaining, and only got tired of it after I played for a few hours at a time.
I could go on for a while about the game, but I'm at work right now. Just wanted to see if anyone else has played it?

Well, I can't name my favourite RPG, since there are so many, so I'm trying to categorize a little bit.
By story: Baldur's Gate II and Final Fantasy 7
It was too hard to decide which one I should name, because I like them all so much. Baldur's Gate II is a roleplaying classic of course, and I think BioWare makes the best RPGs ever. I really liked FF7 Though, because the story had several twists + I like Vincent.
By characters: Definately Final Fantasy 6.
By possibilities: The Elder Scrolls - Morrowind and Oblivion; I really felt like I could create any character I wanted.
By longlivity: Ultima Online - Playing on a roleplaying server for almost 7 years. What else could I say?

Final Fantasy V
Steambot Chronicles
Star Ocean Second Story
Persona 3
Dragon Quest VIII
Ar Tonelico (first one)
Atelier Iris Eternal Mana
Lunar 1 and 2
Grandia 2
Tales of Vesperia
Dark Cloud 2
Shadow Hearts(first)
Epheremal Fantasia
It's not really in order, it's just the order I remembered them. I have a really bad memory, so it took a while to get all those out. There's probably others too. FFV was my fav Final Fantasy, the job system was brilliant!
I liked the Second Star Ocean the best, if only 3 didn't pull the whacked out plot twist it did...I don't have a 360, so I can't speak on 4, but I'm really looking forward to the international version.
Ar Tonelico was awesome, and the music was top knotch, but the second one just felt lacking compared to the first one. Plus, the cast of characters just fit me more with the first one.
Atelier Iris was only good with the first game. The rest of them just couldn't compare. And atelier Rorona, what little I've played of it so far, may just one up it. But I've had so little experience with it, that I can't put it on the list yet.
Persona 4 was good, but the 3rd one just won me over with the more dark and sinister plot.
Dark Cloud 2 was everything that I wished Dark Cloud were. I couldn't have been more happier with that sequel.
Steambot Chronicles was an experience that I had never encountered before, and it really was an enjoyable game, yet frequently overlooked.
If you've never played Epheramal Fantasia, then you're seriously missing out on one very awesome game. It's similar to Eternal Sonata, but WAAAY better in my opinion. it also seems to get bad reviews, but I loved every second of it, and had no problem with the time loops.
Dragon Quest VIII was just...epic. That's really the only word to describe it.
The Lunar series was one of the greatest game series of all time. Then working designs disbanded, and someone else took on the games, and they horribly mangled it. I haven't checked out the PSP remake yet, but it looks promising.
Grandia II, possibly my most remembered game of all time. It used to be my favorite, but I've since moved it from that position. It still holds a very high place, and I'll probably never forget Ryuudo Elena and Millennia. The third one was actually quite good, and the extreme game was also decent. I didn't like the first one, mainly for personal reasons that probably won't influence many people's like/dislike of the game.
The first Shadow Hearts brought in a combat system like no other, and really confused the traditional sense of an rpg. But, it was immense fun, and never disappointed. The second and third were also quite good. I just found the first to be the most memorable.
Tales of Vesperia really brought my faith back in the Tales series. After Legendia and Abyss, I was really doubting that a Tales game would be as fun as Symphonia was. Vesperia turned out to be even better than Symphonia, and the PS3 port is looking to improve that even further.

I do like Lost Odyssey, but found it tiresome quite quickly. I think one of its best features is the short stories; seriously. They are wonderfully written. I love the ambience when you read them as well. But the battle system just grated, it didn't add anything new and just got boring after a while. It's still probably up there in my top 20 though, just for having some really well designed locations and those short stories. Main story is pretty decent too.
Although I've probably posted in this thread more than once, my main favourites are in no partic order:
- Jade Empire [beautiful setting, whimsical characters, also loved the Spiritual side of it]
- Fable I and II [although the latter was a slight disappointment I felt]
- TLoZ: A Link to the Past [although more of an Adventure I suppose]
- FFVIII & FFX [sentiment more than anything I suppose now, but still brilliant games]
- TES: Morrowind
I'm currently playing through Risen, finding it to be rather patchy to be honest. I think I'm about an hour from the end. Although I've enjoyed most of it, I think the difficulty curve is way to steep, some of the missions are poorly explained/not explained at all, and there are quite a few bugs. It also seems to lag quite a bit in a similar way Fable does on the Xbox.. despite me having a pretty decent Dual Core Intel CPU, plenty of RAM and an 8800GT. Maybe my PC is just dying though.

FFIX
Dragon Quest VIII
Kingdom Hearts
Oblivion
Fallout 3
Tales of Eternia
Since the only RPGs I've ever really played are the FF series, I suppose the only 'favorites' I can pick come from amongst them.
FFIX
FFVI
FFIV
FFXII
My usual disclaimer: Yes, I love all FF games equally, don't get me wrong, just those four stand out to me the most.

I don't think I can choose 1... but at the very top I can argue FF Tactics. The story line was so fuckin twisted. Everything about this game was great to me. I don't think it had a single flaw. I also consider it VERY underrated.
I also enjoyed Valkyrie Profile, FF7, FF9, & if you guys consider it a RPG, Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

That's one of it's charms =D
but FFT is the most acclaimed Tactical RPG along with Disgaea, it's not that underrated, the genre itself is not famous enough to consider that it has good or bad rates.
If you liked FFT Story, go for Vagrant Story & if you want to play a TRPG that has a storyline with that kind of dimension, check Vandal Hearts I & II.

Vandal Hearts came out 6 months prior to Final Fantasy Tactics, and wass the second TRPG I played (First being Mystaria: Realms of Lore on Sega Saturn, which Vandal Hearts was also released on in November of 1997, only in Japan though), but I enjoyed Vandal Hearts far more than even Final Fantasy Tactics.
I recommend looking for Vandal Hearts if you can. The sequel was ok, had a bit more micro management, but still a good game.

I've played a TON of games, but unfortunately, I've only actually completed a handful of RPGS. Of the ones I've played though:
Kingdom Hearts - VERY special game. My all-time favourite RPG AND video game.
FFIX/FFX - For sheer awesomeness! Plus, I rather like the battle system in FFX.
Ookami - Very unique and imaginative. Plus, who doesn't love RPing as a wolf?
Chrono Trigger - Duh!
Tales of Symphonia - No words can convey my love for this game. Fantastic and powerful storyline!

Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call.
Final Fantasy 7.
Final Fantasy 8.
Final Fantasy 12.
Star Ocean: Til the End of Time.
Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords.
Mass Effect 1.
Could possibly include Secret of Mana as well, but I haven't played that since it came out, so I don't know how it would stand up, these days.
If we're classing Zelda games as RPGs (which some people do), then Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time would be on there.

Final Fantasy IX, Persona 3, Dragon Quest VIII and the Digital Devil Saga series comes to mind.
A lot of people like Persona 4 over 3, but for me P4 just lacks of so many things that made P3 so awesome and unique. But I got to say, Adachi is one of the best "villians" I have seen in an RPG.
He's not "bad" because someone rape his mom (I'm seeing you Sephiroth), he is bad because of believable reasons, I will not give any spoilers, but damn he's a fine piece of well executed character.
No way. the whole idea that the main character is a dream? what a waste :(
That's was an intelligent ending, no... for a Final Fantasy game that ending was (and still is in some aspects) brilliant.

I have played a few rpg games: good and bad. But if you blend some of them you can get great rpg game, for example:
Vagrant Story or Legacy of Kain - for plot and story.
Neverwinter Nights or Witcher - for non-linear gameplay.
Final Fantasy - for atmosphere.
God of War - for riddles and puzzles.
Diablo - for simpleness.
That would be my favorite rpg game. Only if one appeared in the near/distant future.

Well, the best RPG would be Mass Effect 2, but they seem to have forgotten some important things. Like, you know, meaningful stats. And loot. Awesome game though.
World of Warcraft is definitely the best pure RPG on the market, but it's hamstrung by the fact you have to rely on others to do the best content.
Knights of the Old Republic is the best Star Wars game ever made, but is also lacking in the RPG-ish department.
So...i'm going to have to say Fallout 3. Fallout: New Vegas has a better story, but it's more bug-ridden than a streetwalker's nethers, so FO3 is it - especially with the expansions, which are all fantastic.

What about vampire the maskerade? i absolutely love that game to death and played it so many times.
Ultima underworld:this game is so friggin hard because its huge and you have to map everything.
Suikoden 2:I think the main characters are slightly better and nanami is quite funny and jowy is epic and so is the evil prince luca.Oh yeah:suikoden 4 sucks, the stuff are too easy to get because they are all cramped in together.
Breath of fire 1-3 are epic indeed and worthy of mention.
I never played kotor so i can't say, maybe i'l download it to try a demo or something?
Final fantasy 6:best one in the series to me followed by either 4 or 9 as second and 5th would be third in the series.
Parasite eve 1 and 2:I don't understand why people hate 2 so much,i mean:its a survival horror but thats what its supposed to be?

I loved PE1, and I like 2 as well. But the problem with PE2 is that the storyline moves away, does not make sense and it has many many facepalmish moments.
The monster design though is superb and many battles are fun and exciting.
It's not a bad game but it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaay inferior compared to 1. Specially in regards of the music, storyline and characters.

Hmm after trying a few of the xbox360 ones,i do like fable 2,but it only has 2 endings. The gameplay did offer a lot in the first playthrough, but not much for replay value.
One of the things i love,is the achievements like:polygamist. The good and evil is your basic american rpg thing nowadays, and the horns and halo thing i guess is the way to tell if you are evil or good.
I had a good male magician guy,but i took the sex change potion by accident and turned into a girl and then i deleted the game.
I started all over and now i got a female who is evil and a male who is good.
Best is difficult as said before,i think ff6 is an excelent game in the series and i hold it up high above 8 7 9 and X.
I like X more than 9 and i like 9 more than 7 or 8 and i like 4 more than 9 and x.
So favorite final fantasy:6-4-X-9
Favorite dragon warrior:1 and 8 because i haven't played the others yet.
Favorite non final fantasy square game: so far:parasite eve secret of evermore and chrono trigger
Favorite richard garrison game so far:ultima underworld ultima 3 ultima 8 and ultima 7.
Favorite konami rpg:Suikoden 2 suikoden 1 and suikoden 5,but i think suikoden 5 is slightly better than suikoden 1 and a whole lot better than suikoden 4.
Favorite bethdetha game so far:oblivion, might try call of cthulu sometime because i hear its good, but i will need some info on this.
Favorite lionhead game so far:black and white.
favorite namco rpg so far:Tales of symphonia.
Favorite game arts game:Grandia 2
Favorite capcom rpg:breath of fire 2 breath of fire 1 breath of fire 3 and willow are from the same maker i believe:tokuro fujiwara.Oh:no influence on breath of fire 3.
Least favorite rpgs of all time:FFXIII FF7 FF8 diablo and suikoden 4
reasons:I can't stand the characters and story or lack of story anda gameplay.
One of the worse games i've played ever:Secret of the stars
reason:Story is so damm horrible:Homncruise haha damm thats bad
Another:Eternal quest
Reason:its not like a true rpg,in fact:Its just a mindless hack and slash and without any intelligence required.
Oh yeah:i played might and magic 6:it was actually a good game and maybe some day i'l play it fully.
Hope i didn't go on too long.

Heh,diablo is more gameplay than story bro.I find that funny since you mention diablo.
Diablo is your simplest hack and slash game, its all gameplay and hardly any story actually, and its very hard too when you start getting to the end.
Chrono trigger certainly has a interesting way of telling the story and the characters are quite likeable, and it certainly deserves credit.
Chrono trigger in 2006-2007 i think it was, made me feel something for it and i was never even played it in 1994 or 1995 or whenever it came out.To me,if a game can do that to a new player, then it certainly has a charm that makes it quite memorable.
Breath of fire 1 is a very good game and i enjoy it immensely. You will have to give me which char you like the most from bof 1 bof 2 bof 3 etc.
Suikoden 1 is a very good game and loved it,but suikoden 2 far surpasses it and ff7 in my opinion. The end is so sad and i end up feeling sorry for jowy.
I never played grandia 1 but i did play grandia 2 and loved playing that game.My favorite character was definitely millenia and ryudo.Love the funny dialogue i get from millenia and how she is supposed to be evil but she has a soft spot for kids.
Fallout 3 i played and its story was actually interesting.I liked how you could affect the story very early on and do such evil deeds that on the radio you could hear of your misdeeds and they call you villainous monster and such.I have a char in fallout 3 who blew up megaton and enslaved a bunch of people.
FF7:good game, but in my opinion not the best game evarr, not the best final fantasy either.
I actually think ff6 is superior and ff4 and ff9 and chrono trigger and FFX,but ff7 is one of the better ones in comparison to ff8 FFXIII and FF2 and 3 on the nes.In my opinion:massively overrated.
Oh yeah:i never played baldurs gate but i keep hearing about that damned game,i'm going to have to download it someday, cause it actually looks good.

MOTHER 3 (Why can't I hold all these tears?)
But my top 5 in no particular order would be (Excluding MOTHER 3)
-Chrono Trigger (Nostalgia Googles GO!)
-Final Fantasy VI (Amazing storyline and great cast of characters)
-Radiant Historia (Great gameplay, music and art, probably the best of this generation)
-Breath of Fire IV (I picked this over II mostly for the gameplay and setting)
-Paper Mario 2 (Blah blah, gameplay, blah blah, music, blah blah, story)

Is zelda considered an rpg? Because it should be on the list of best rpg series.
Oh yeah:I liked magic of sheherazade as a kid quite a lot.

For me I'd say it would probably have to be FFVII. I know some people will say "that's just a fanboy answer" but that's definitely the one RPG that got me back into RPGs and I could never get sick of running threw. I'd say originally the first RPG that got me into RPG was Phantasy Star on the master system, but after that age old play threw from back in the day, it was FFVII that kicked me back into the RPG scene, got me hooked, and got me into other great titles like Legend Of Dragoon, Chrono Cross, and of course all the other FFs.

True! Got alot of <3 for Link!
Can't really choose my fav though.. I've got like 150+- games, mostly RPG's. And I CANNOT choose.
But.. Final Fantasy VIII was my first RPG that got me to love a whole lot more. So I guess all my creds should go to that one.
Although I also have alot of love for the Zelda-series, the Tales series, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Dragoon, Suikoden and then obviously the FF-series..

wtf? you like suikoden 4? It was the biggest let down in the series.
This one did almost everything wrong:
The boat fights are a downgrade from fighting on a horse.
The giant boat isn't as exciting to have as the actual castle, which has loads of rooms and a cook in it and such.
There are a lot less places in the game to go to,and the 108 stars are all crammed into tight spaces.

Grandia 2 - god is dead and now church serves the devil. but people does not really require any god in the end =) Cute Elena :3
Skies of Arcadia - air pirates! giant world and epic armades fight with magic and guns! Awesome characters that you start to like after one look.
Grandia - my really favorite. This game is really piece of wonder, give kick ass to your imagination, contain fantastic story about growing up, first love, friends and foes... it fees so bright like you did all this not Justin.
System Shock 2. Shocked me with brainfucking story and strange gameplay, contain most smart and awesome villain of all times - Shodan. Also game permanently frighting you.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - you think it is shooter? Nope. It is REAL RPG, you play your role as stalker, receive ranks in the world, interact with NPC's, proceed quests, buy weapons and armor in shop - so, it is RPG. Contain really apocalyptic world, so real that you can find locations like in Stalker on your urban peripheral zone. Also in Russia and Ukraina Stalker's locations everywhere, brings game close to me. It is my world, just some darker than real.
Other games can also be really great and goes to do-not-miss list, like Chrono Trigger or FFVII, or Mass Effect, but we talk about RPGs that touches you most, is it?
P.S. I do not know who might so like western rpg's... they cool, but not touch the heart for me.

Man, what an amazing game it was. It saddens me that there won't be another game like this one.
Thousand Cuts and Legendary Strike were my favorite styles.

Good call with Baldur's Gate II.

-Final Fantasy XIII-2
-Star Ocean 4 The Last Hope International ( Underrated Game - This game is so much fun. I recommend this game, its brilliant even though the story needs a bit of work otherwise its a fun experience )
Right on!
Although I failed to list it, I thought for current gen RPGs, The Last Hope International was an awesome game.
I didn't even care about the story most of the time because of the awesome gameplay. Battles were so fun.
I normally don't do Colosseum fights in games, but I had to finish all of them because I loved battles so much.
As for FFXIII-2, I haven't played it yet because of I have a whole slew of games I need to play, but I do hear it is pretty fun too.
