I hate to revive a dead topic, but:
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy 9 -> gnostic themes galore. FF8 and FFT are best FFs though.
Azure Dreams (is > u)
Star Ocean 2 - rough on a few edges, but pretty good overall.
Pokemon series (the main series, not the stupid spinoff garbage).
Xenogears
Planescape: Torment
Darklands on the PC. That game puts all of the Elder Scrolls games to shame. Too bad Microprose went bankrupt grr
Does Castlevania: Symphony of the Night count?
FF6 (South Figaro Terra/Locke/Edgar)
I thought you played the game before? Or is it your first time playing it?:)

I must admit I get confused as to what gets the Rpg label. But I do like most games whether they be action, rpg, adventure actually pretty much anything. there are some games that you should never play though and they are games based on movies. only one exception to this and thats the Lord of the rings, (at least i'm told that, I've never played it myself). Games based on movies/tv shows are usually pretty poor quality.
Oh and prak, what are features of an Rpg?
Did you even bother to click the link I posted? It goes to a thread that makes my views on the matter very clear.

Danixel, I'm going to assrape you with a dictionary till your posts are worthwhile reading.
And I have to agree with Prak here, there are some games out there that may not have the actual label of RPG. But they have far more role playing aspects then some other RPGs do have (KH is indeed more of a Adventure game) but I'd consider the Castlevania games actual role playing games.
Actually, a Castlevania title would best be classified as an action platformer. My entire point is that a level system and stats are not the defining characteristics of an RPG. An RPG is defined by the degree of control you have over your character's actions, objectives, and personality. If you don't have control over all three of those elements, it's not really a role-playing game.

And as I've been saying, that doesn't mean it's really an RPG because the companies that use that label are retarded and don't know what the term means.

By your definition, RPGs have never existed, as objectives are always dictated by someone other than the player.
The best still has to be Zelda: The Ocarina of time

Not necessarily true, there's lots of discussion going on between player and DM befor a session starts, so there's lots of room to insert a player's objectives in the session agenda.
There are different types of objectives. Characters can easily have their own motives for wanting to reach a predefined objective. Personal objectives are far more important than the options presented by the overstory for purposes of role-playing.

The best ones I've played were Breath of Fire 3, Golden Sun, Tales of Phantasia (PSX), Star Ocean 2 (for all the stuff you could do in the game), and Grandia 2.
For each of those games I love the battle systems, characters, soundtracks, almost everything about each one of those games shines in some way.
For Final Fantasy, I'd say my favorites are V and VI.

Prak is completely right going by the strict deffnition of an RPG. Very few console games give players the opportunity to actually role play at all and the ones that do offer a very limited version of it where there may be several different paths to take but each one is still predetermined. MMO's are a lot better than console games as far as giving players the oportunity to role play (even if very few players in those games actually do).
All that being said though definitions tend to get skewed over time, and it seems the only thing needed to be termed RPG in the gaming industry today is some sort of stat/equipment upgrade. I mean how many people still think of a bundle of twigs when they hear the word faggot?

hmm tricky question it certainly is..
I've played tons of rpg throughout my life..
I really think i must list a few of my favourites.
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Tales pf Phantasia
Secret of mana
Chrono Trigger
Wild Arms
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy IX
If i must chose from one of these games i will go for Secret of Mana, just because it was the first snes rpg i owned, and it sure brought a lot of joyful hours in front of the tv. Then of course i luckily found out that there were 10 orbs for upgrading to each weapon kind. This was times before i had the opportunity to use internet, and nothing in the manual said anything about ten weapon upgrades.. If i recall it right it says in tha manual that you only can upgrade your weapons 9 times..
And i just love the music in secret of mana.

FFVI and FFVII- The story and the characters are just really good in both games. I won't go on because everyone's tired of hearing about them.
Chrono Trigger- Pretty much the same reason as the Final Fantasy games. Nostalgia's also a big thing here(same with FFVI); their poor graphics and rough(at times- certainly not my favorite) combat systems are endearing.
Ocarina of Time- The characters aren't that interesting. The story isn't any big deal. It's just a really fun game, to the extent that I'll put it on the list.
Diablo II- There are better games out there. I know this. There are no characters and the plot's no good. The gameplay is good, but it's just combat, and Ocarina of Time beats that out for its puzzles. I include it here based solely on replayability, which it has in spades- it took me a lot of years to get really tired of it.
Torment- Probably my favorite computer game ever made(including consoles). Christ, considering how much this game gets overlooked, it is amazing. The characters and storyline are at least as well developed as any Final Fantasy game or Chrono Trigger, but with a more engaging combat system that doesn't quite have the instant gratification of Diablo II but keeps the game moving along better than most turn-based games. It also has a lot of the same puzzle-style gameplay as Ocarina of Time, but with plot in mind.
Although I don't really see it as in keeping with the thread theme, I'll mention PnP RPGs that I've played.
D&D 1st-2nd Ed- First RPG I ever played, amazing game. I do not, however, acknowledge the existence of a 3rd Ed due to its incredible inferiority. This system is great for simple, gamist roleplaying and dungeon crawls.
Cyberpunk 2020- Not a very versatile system, but fun as hell. Cyberpunk is an awesome setting.
Seven Leagues- Essentially nobody has heard of this due to the small scale of it. Released locally by a friend, I in turn worked to modify it from a fairy tale system to one that would give the game master complete control and creative freedom. It's something that relies heavily on both a good game master and good, engaged players

star ocean 2, grandia 2, ff 7, ff tactics, lunar 1 and 2, secret of mana secret of ever more, breath of fire 3, thousand arms it was different i liked the concept, skies of arcadia, grandia, mario superstar saga and way too many others to name.
all time favorite tie between star ocean 2 and ff tactics.
battle wise star ocean 2 story was great not to mention the 80 different possible endings, it also had one of the hardest last bosses i've fought to date, story wise my favorite is grandia 2 i just love the whole story and it has my favorite soundtrack battle song and over all song.
ff tactics music was superb. i wish they would do a 3d version update with more job classes etc. i'll shut up now i could post pages if wanted to about rpgs. but i know you people have better things to do that read through me spamming on about the how great so and so is. thats my picks anyways

For me, it's a tossup between three SNES games.
Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound, each for the uniqueness they contributed to the RPG genre.
Forced to pick, I'd have to say Earthbound. It's just so silly and easy to replay over and over again =) the visuals are subpar, but the cartoonie graphics suit the characters as well as the story they play out. The music is simple, but cute in that it isn't annoyingly repetitive to the point where it makes you want to shoot your tv (battle music in ffgames anyone?) It's cute level more than makes up for any of its shortcomings.

If you guys dig the top 5 thread, you know my spill about Star Ocean the Second Story. As a roleplayer for some long years now, I have not found a game to match it's sheer depth, and I have played just about every RPG mentioned in the threads I've read so far...(yes, I'm an RPG nerd...hey, you need to be if it's to be your profession, right? O.o).
Star Ocean the Second Story wins hands down. I also reccommend and love Thousand Arms for its wit and hilarity, also for a nice easy battle system and lovable characters. Dark Chronicles for it's build your own town kind of thing and I LOVE and ADORE its soundtrack. Lunar is just well...phenomenal...the stories are deep and classic, will stick with you forever...the characters are unbelievably memorable as well. Dot Hack is probably one of the deepest RPGs I've played to date...as far as storyline goes, the dungeouns can get a bit repetitive though, but you barely notice when you're wanting so bad to know whats going on youd kill any monster a million times to figure out the mystery. Wild Arms are a classic...takes you into the wild west and charms you with nice battle sequences and tunes you can whistle to. DewPrism is nice and dark at some points, but the idea of playing two storylines and getting a bigger scope is fun,a nd the characters here make the meat of the game, they're so irisistable. Suikoden can be fun at times, but gets a little flat....I like the wide expanse of towns and places you can visit on some of th egames though. Zelda is duh...a classic, and who couldn't love Majula...okay so I'm weird like that. Ephemeral Phantasia is awesome if you can get past the first "mission"...its an awesome game but extreemely hard, thus it got bad ratings, but if you're really experienced its so much fun you'll play it for weeks....strumming on Patimo. Bumpy Trot is a new addition...combining freedom with a nice story...and you can play in a band, so it's very fresh (and you can be a badass too...so who wouldn't want to do that?). Rhapsody is a nice, charming tactics RPG with a fairy tale story and cute characters...I love the music to that game, actually.....
I think I should stop now....I'll be back with more later....I could go on FOREVER about RPGs, and probably write a novel for each one I own (and some I don't own but wish I did....<.<)
favorites - Breath of fire IV, Chrono Trigger, FF tactics, oblivion, FFVIII, Super mario RPG, and tales of phantasia.

Well. The best RPG I've ever played is FF8. Well it does not mean, that there's no better. Do you know what is pity? That the SqareSoft didn't released the other (newer one) FF episodes. I'm blue because of this. What can I do? Any idea? I would like to see all of 'em. Help me someone. Please, thanks. Hi-Cry

Megaman X Command Mission (PS2)
Children of Mana (DS)
Out of the games the best RPG I've played is FINAL FANTASY IX, I've spend over 100 hours finishing everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. And the Story, Characters, Music, Gameplay, all played vitals roles in why I like it so.
If I had to choose a best only than Final Fantasy games, it would be out of;
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
Dark Cloud Series
Kingdom Heart Series
But all in all, I think all my RPG games are excellent. I only wish I had more of them, but being Australian means I have to wait longer for some of the newer RPG's like Final Fantasy (III, XII), and then some RPG's we don't even get.
And I'm done.

Yes, I did not play a single FF game ^_~"
Though I saw my friend playing a FF game once, and I found it a cool game, but I do not own a PS(2/3) so I could not buy the game for my Gamecube.
But now on the NDS there is a FF coming out, I think I will buy that FF game if it gets good reviews and stuff ^^

The game is visually stunning. That cannot be denied. I really didnt like the battle system. I also didnt like how the summons were used. It was a good rpg, but far from the best IMO.

Skies of Arcadia
Vagrant Story
Suikoden II
Final Fantasy VII
Chrono Trigger

Suikoden II
Final Fantasy VI
Valkyrie Profile I
Wild Arms for PS1
KOTOR
Shadow Hearts I & II
Manga Carta Tears of Blood
I usually like good plot and Unique control set-ups so that is why I like some of the ones on the List. As for FFX I rather enjoyed the way they used Summons it made them Feel stronger then they normally would otherwise and it was a better set-up then FFXII had espically since you could make your most earliest Fayth powerful if you chose to do it.

The Final Fantasy series was amazing to me. The Final Fantasy series captured my heart for years of my childhood and formed loyaties within me so stong I thought my favoratism would forever be unbreakable. How could it not? The game series had grown as I had and I'd been an encaptured witness to each one. But at about 15 years old, the day came where my developed awareness of the world around me and all the important and prodominant issues concerning it would make room for a more worthy stimulant as far as gaming was concerned. Don't get me wrong, each installment of the Final Fantasy Series was unique and most posessed a special quality that I cherish and will forever love but Xenogears, (Gears, not Saga,)was personally a welcome and much needed new experience that would effect me in ways I never ever thought A VIDEO GAME was capable of. Every aspect of it tapped into the depth of my dormant psyche waking within it a more active cycle of thought. Perhaps more important than this, it delved suprisingly deep into the depths of my emotion. An area of myself not easily breached from such outside sources. The following insight, theory, and reasoning for why Xenogears is the single most ingenious game in my eyes is devided into topics. Story, Characters -Sub Category:Villians-, Music, and Battle System. Though much more can be touched upon, these topics reign the most recognized in my mind. So let's get started.
STORY
First and foremost is that of the story of Xenogears and any loyal fan will agree. Without ruining a single detail of it's mastery I will explain. Never before have I played a video game that touched upon so very many issues the real word we live in today faces. The difference in levels of society, A hierarchy of chosen few who choose to manipulate each of these societies through fear and deciept, how through such action confusion and betrayal is unavoidable, religeous conflict and dominance, the mess of politics, the labarynth of the human mind and how easily twisted it becomes as well as special pschological problems that can develope within it, and so much more. The pace was mostly smooth, each chapter blending into the next without the blink of an eye. Never again do I expect to be graced with a story so powerful and relevant within an RPG.
CHARACTERS
Without great characters, a promising story might as well be an empty shell with no substance to command attention and form it's entirety, and the characters of Xenogears are no exeption to this rule. They are the heart and soul of the story and stand as beacons of the genious of the game. They were all real on some level, posessing personal history and path incredibly shocking but also emotions that seem almost tangible they are so easy to relate to. The bond between each really brings to light the backbone of friendship and trust and how both of these can sometimes be compromised for the ideal of something greater. Empathy between player and characters is undeniable and I myself hope it to be fateful. The "villians" of Xenogears are indeed included in this description which deems them even more interesting in their entirety. Save for one "villian" that I know of, an in depth past accompanies each making thier downfall into corruption understandable and therefore questioning how evil they actually are. Though their acts are undeniably terrible, their motive and drive must be taken into account. Such quality makes for great characters. (Sephiroth for instance). I, for one, will not easily forget what each character had to offer and the ones that opened my eyes to things I had not thought about before will always have aplace in my heart.
MUSIC
Ah yes, Xenogears OST. Composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. Yes, the same who wrote for Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Xenosaga. Of course all of his works are amazing. I owe much of my sanity to this man and much of it is in debt to the XG OST. The story, characters, and music should all work hand in hand and this game is a prime example of the fact for as stunning, epic, and emotionally stimulating as the rest of the game is, the scores match it forming to it appropriately. Yasunori Mitsuda has never let me down for even without playing the games first one can simply derive the emotional context of it through his masterwork. Xenogears was the best example of this though I might be being slightly biased. ;) Simply breathtaking.
BATTLE SYSTEM
For the day and age the game was created, the battle system was quite unique. Not only being able to engage in combat on foot, but in large mechanically manipulated machines called "Gears"? Awesome! The combo idea though slightly repetative by today's standards was exiting back in the day! Up until that point battle within an RPG had been slightly generic give or take a few exeptions here and there but Xenogears nailed it once again with battle system. Some might compare it so Evangelion but don't ask me to specify and comment. I never watched Evangelion so I have no say in the matter.
It's crawled a bit past my bedtime now so I will move to conclude this everlasting post of mine but I must add the following. Xenogears was brilliant. Each aspect is worthy of some sort of praise in my opinion though I realize that everyone has a right to their own even if by chance, it differs from my own. I just speak from a personal standpoint when I state that the game changed so much inside of me that words may not even be able to express. Please forgive the passion that spurred such a burst of lengthiness but the topic was such a temptation I could not help myself. :P
Alright, time to go catch some Zzz's!

I would have to say FFV,FFVI,FFVII, star ocean second story, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Super Ninja Boy (probably the only one who has played that here) all the kingdom Hearts, and Tales of Phantsia (however you spell that) they each got there own unquie parts to them so they are all great to me I have played more rpgs but these are the best ones

My order:
1. Final Fantasy VI(By far in first!)
2. Chrono Trigger(By far in second!)
3. The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past(I might be overrating this now)
4. Final Fantasy VII
5. Final Fantasy X
6. Final Fantasy Tactics
Those are the only rpgs for me that are perfect or near perfect. None of those bottom four compare to Chrono Trigger for me. And for me, Chrono Trigger doesn't compare to Final Fantasy VI. Final Fantasy VI is just so far out there storywise and overall that I don't think I will EVER in my life play another game as great as Final Fantasy VI was.

PlaneScape: Torment.
For me the best RPG ever. The best story I've ever played, but it's not one where you're trying to SAVE THE WORLD FROM IMMENENT DOOM. It's a really personal story which I really apreciate. It's really well worked out, the characters have good voices and great humor.

I hate to say it, but I believe Ar Tonelico just became the best RPG I've played in many many many years. And for awhile now that was Suikoden II. I don't know if it's because of the well done characters, or the awesome music that is in this game. But I'm hooked and can't stop playing. There is a system in it called the "Cosmosphere" where you dive into the mind of your "partner" and help them find themselves. Or to put it simply - help them achieve Total Enlightenment. About 50% of the games storyline is fitted into this system. There are plot twists and things you wont even now if you avoid thier spheres. The battle system is tradional and the old school 2-D atmosphere is present(with the downside being that there is really no exploration of towns, but if you've played RTS games like Front Mission 3, this should'nt bother you). I find 3-D RPGs to have lazy atmospheres and too short.

Chrono Trigger. It's the only game that ever really feels complete. It has everything an RPG should have.
Xenogears gets an honourable mention for the absolutely adult level of story.
And I'm quite impressed by the 3 hours I spent with Kingdom Hearts, an enjoyable battle system and from what I saw an interesting sotry. -3 for the nausea inducing camera though.
I'd say something about Final Fantasy here, but... come on just look at the name of the friggin' website.

MediEvil is not and RPG.......... Its a Platform game like Crash Bandicoot or Spyro
but i Choose Final Fantasy VIII
I Found the Characters Brilliant

You Had Squall a Man scared to get close to others and always lost in though.
Zell the Lively Fellow easily agravatedbut also is a know it all
Rinoa The Damsel in Distress Caring though can be selfish
Irvine Ladys Man hes pretty cocky which can get him into trouble
Selphie the lively one...okay i didnt like her much lol but she was lively and cherrful
Quistis the teacher aka the wise one?
Siefer Squalls Child Hood Enemy his complete opposite
what i love about FF8's story is i parts a Romantic love story and how a man who is shy and keeps to himself grows to notice hes around people who care about him and even love him.but then how when your playing this game the story and objects change so does squall.theres a great deal of contrast between squall at the beginning of the game to the end of the game.
I found every part of the game interesting somthing was always going on(unlike ff12...),Like the Garden Battles remember the start of that your just flying around then suddenly your into a huge war i foudn it quite breathtaking, but what about the intro of this game easily the best intro to a game that i have ever seen, the music is fantastic and has the right tone and pace to fit the action on the screen.
Now about the world and how it was designed.if never seen a better designed world, i love the era/time zone which the game is in its sort of futuristic but then its not to far in the future (Esthar may be an exception)

do you see what i mean by a mix of futuristic and modern mixed. i like the way the colours sometimes shine like metal on the G.Garden and how the buildings designs look like symbols. Also i have to say that the Last bosses on ff8 are the most amazing visual experience ive ever seen in gaming.the atmosphereof the colours and shades gives it such tension and the design of the bosses (along with the dramatic soundtrack) especially the last one. the monster if you will has so many bright contrasting colours over shades of gray and the area is in space black space whith stars and its all just so clear and shrap but in a good way.ive not seen anything like it to this day.
but For The Game Play, alot of people moan at the Junction System because it too complicated when i personnaly find it very simple, the only problem with the Junction System is that it Limits the use of magic because the magic is stored to make you have more HP attack power ect. but other than that everythign else is fine,i like how the game has Levels on the characters,i like how you can get limit breaks by low health or Aura magic and how when you charge up to use the
G.F/Summons in battle they actually have a set Hp so if the Enemy its you while your charging for the G.F attack your G.F will take the blow and die.i also thin the graphics of the battles are probaly the Best of the PS1 while in battle and smoothed out on the PS2 it looks great.

http://rpgeternity.altervista.org/GF%20FF8/doomtrain_ff8.jpghttp://rpgeternity.altervista.org/GF%20FF8/Diablos_ff8.jpg
as For extra things to do you have weapons to upgrade, the Card game which is brilliant and addicting,a chocobo system which kind of failed due to it relying on the Pocket Station and many other side quests
Also i found FF8 entertaining all the way through where that be events always happening in storywise when i got to new places to battles casting GF's to exploring the beautifully crafted world that Squaresoft gave us.not only do i find Final Fantasy VIII the best RPG iver played but also the best game ive ever played. If any game can be called a masterpiece or a Pice of art id say FF8.
Other RPGS I like:FFVII,FFIX,FFX,KH1&2,Star Ocean 3 Till the end of time

Final Fantasy 7, because it made me cry when Aeris died. Morrowind because it had a better story line than Oblivion! LoZ Ocarina of Time, I would have to say is the best Zelda game (even though I liked Twilight Princess, found it was too short though) ever. World of Warcraft! I know its an MMO, but it's still an RPG. It pwns Ever Quest (sorry to say, I did like Ever Quest but it got boring faster than WoW).
I've been playing RPGs for years, and I have yet to find one that's better than Final Fantasy IX. I'm not really much of a player, but out of all the ones I've tried, this one is still the best.
(checks to see if Prak is going to swoop in to turn this back into a 'these aren't RPGs' thread).
I have to go with Final Fantasy VI. It has a large, well balanced cast of characters. The game is equivalent to an ensemble cast movie and requires a delicate balancing of the backstories of all the characters with the limited time they are allowed for each. I think they did it magnificently. These characters were not formed on the day you start a new game, they have engaging and worthwile backstories that make you love or hate each and every one of them (save Gogo and Umaro, but you get the idea).
Each character has a reason for resisting the empire and, therefore, joining the party. The graphics are the best in any sprite-based game I have ever seen and the environments are large, detailed, and engrossing.
The contrast between the World of Balance, and the World of Ruin is beautiful. I actually feel sad to see the world be ripped apart and feel desperate and desolate when you have to begin all over again. You have to reunite the last sparks of the hope in the world and make one last hail-mary assault.
The music is instantly memorable and ranges from ecstatic (Johnny C Bad) to tranquil (Kids Run Through the City) to everywhere else on the emotional spectrum. It isn't my personal favorite, but it is the best I've played. Xenogears comes close, so very close, but ultimately falls short, IMO.
I guess my favorite RPGs are the ones that I can actually go back and play again...and again. Maybe trice.
I did this with:
FFVII
Breath of Fire 3
Chrono Trigger
Xenogears
Suikoden 2
Final Fantasy Tactics
Castlevania SOTN (Even if you don't consider it an RPG.I Played it to death.)

plus all the job crossing, everything from alchemist, and squire,.to ninja/samurai,bard,.probably 30 job classes to mix, match and master,.and of course the story line charachters, and hidden characters,.beowolf, the divine knight, dragon charmers/3 headed white hydras, beast tamers, very powerfull robot,..plus sidequests that level you up,and give you exp...and of course, guest apperances by cloud, and aeris,.
next of all time pic,..ffx,.beat both of these, like 5 times,.and of course among my top 5,.ff12 and rogue galaxy,.

When you guys completely destroy the meaning of the term and make it utterly useless, you have no one but yourselves to blame. I get the luxury of sitting back and laughing at all the fucktards who never bothered to listen to me when they still had the chance.
I was not here at that time. Could you remind me ?
In a nutshell, games such as Final Fantasy and its ilk are not role-playing games. They're adventure games that ignorant Japanese developers who didn't understand the real concept behind role-playing slapped the wrong title on and managed to propagate.
By one commonly used definition of a role-playing game, Pac-Man is a fucking RPG because you "play the role of Pac-Man." Of course, that makes no sense and makes the term useless. I can continue, but this isn't the place. This is the place for people who don't know the difference to spout off while I laugh at them for their foolishness.

Oh, ok. completely agree with you. There's also an other point. I call it the liberty problem: these games only offer a very limited panel of possibilities, contrary to P&P RPGs, like Shadowrun or L5R. Other problem: you don't create the character (Ok, in some games like Fallout or BG, you do, but you still can't say to Elminster to go and get lost with his prophecies...).
And sorry for treating you of moron in the other post. and of idiot by now.

You hit on the entire essence of the issue right there. People refer to games as RPGs without knowing what role-playing is in the first place. The liberty problem, as you put it, is exactly what it boils down to.
Oblivion and Kingdom hearts 2, two games that have a special place in my heart.

Meh, Oblivion is much better.
SICK! Oblivion holds your hand through the whole game. The combat sucks, the physics suck, the AI is horrible. Sure the combat in morrowind is roll to hit and they could have increased the hit rate I still prefer it over oblivion. I'd rather have the limited AI in morrowind that the "free form" ai in oblivion where everyone does the same thing every day.
Really? I found none in the flaws you have mentioned, and I own both games.

Nearly all the games evoked in this thread are not RPG, but Adventure games...I still wait for a true RPG where i will be able to play a villain and finish the game, in my very own sick way (IE: killing every thing between me and the ending credits)...:naughty:
So far, only Fallout 2 allowed me to do this...:-P

Play Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. You can kill anything, even when doing so will prevent you from actually finishing the game.

Probably need to make a list ranking them since I enjoyed a lot...
1. Chrono Trigger - Amazing concept, very entertaining, and probably the one I would still be willing to replay until I die. It truly lasts through the ages.
2. Tales of Phantasia (PSX) - First game I played in full Japanese, amazing battle system (since I previously only had seen turn based ones) and I loved the storyline along with the humorous innuendos.
3. Tales of Symphonia - Being like a sequel/prequel to ToP, it was definitely a game that I loved for its characters. The characters are cute, and beyond that, I have always loved the anti-hero villain introduced in games.
4. Final Fantasy VI - Kefka is awesome, there really isn't more I should have to say about that one.
5. Valkyrie Profile 1 - The voice acting in this one was fantastic in my opinion and I loved the gameplay. I don't think anything could have been more fun than doing thousands of points of damage to your enemies with a long string of attacks -- Nibelung Velesti!
6. Sword of Mana (AKA Final Fantasy Adventure Remake) - My favorite gameboy game remade, one word...Kickass.
And that sums up my top 6 of all time favorite RPGs :)

08-02-2007, 02:27 PM
1. .hack Infection/Mutation/Outbreak/Quarantine (PS2) - Either way to understand the storyline to .hack//GU you have to play it and dispite the ugly rating Gamspot gave them I still love .hack becuase its my favorite anime.
2. .hack//GU Vol. 1 Rebirth/Vol. 2 Reminisce (Still Waiting On 3 But I Know Whats Ganna Happen ^-^) (PS2) - Large improvments in the new series games plus the storyline is amazing plus the battling system wow. This is way better then FF all the way and you can count on that.
3. Star Ocean 3 Till The End Of Time : Please tell me a game better then this (KH is one that dosent involve FF) action packed and real-type battling system and dont tell me final fantasy because it cant beat this not even the corny new one 12 because FF12s storyline sucks it practicly put me to sleep.
4. Tales Of The World RM : Ok so who wouldent like to have the tales series characters in a protable system? This is the best Tales of series game up to date.
5. Golden Sun And The Lost Age : If you have forgotten about this rpg your a sad person. Basicly one of the best long rpgs i ever played in a gba (Besides pokemon cuz that dosent count no storyline just repeat the same old thing in ever game "gatta catch em all and beat the trainers to be the best" oh yeah some storyline woo-hoo) this game took alot into to be played and basicly the graphics and music are wonderful.
@Kwiqsilvr: Every tales of series is not combined with any other. Each one has a seperate storyline. Now if you played ToW then thats when u can call it a sequel to all of the tales of games

8. Xenosaga series
9. KH series
10. FF Tactics series

Honestly, I haven't played many except for online.
Online- Trickster. Damn, it's a copy of Ragnorok, only cuter!
Dragonfable- Sequel to Adventure Quest. Your character actually moves! WOW! XD
Not online- Kh2. I don't have a Ps2 (Yet. I'm saving up for one currently), but I played it at a friend's house.
FF: CC- No, not Crisis Core. Crystal Chronicals. Probobly never heard of it, but it's real. AND SWEET MOTHA IS IT AWESOME :D
Edit- Baten Kairos Oden. The name is so confusing I might've got it wrong. Pretty much Kh: CoM only on the gamecube, better graphics, and it's way better. Plain and simple.

Okay, i'll be honest, i havn't played a lot of RPG's. Final Fantasy 4 to 10-2 + 12,
Star Ocean 3, Chrono Trigger, and a heap of ones i've forgotten about.
I'd easily say Final Fantasy 7 is the best i've ever played, everything about it is incredible. I've played 10 for countless hours, Love it. Star Ocean 3 i THOROUGHLY enjoyed, finished it multiple times. I played SO1 a bit, and i liked it, but i lost that somewhere =(. Chrono Trigger was really really good, but i didn't like it as much as some others.

then why does it use the same battle system as FFX(LOTR the Third Age)?
Because FFX is more like an adventure game than a real RPG. Not that you'd know the difference, brainwashed as most people tend to be on that issue.

There's quite a lot of great RPGs out there (ANY FINAL FANTASY PAST 6 ISN'T!)
but there is a group which stand above all, the Shin Megami Tensei Series!
More precisely SMT Nocturne Maniacs... some love it, and many hate it...
Deep and dark atmosphere, chalenging difficulty, terrific replay value... and it is the most powerfull of the series artistically speaking.
In second place I would say BoF Dragon Quarter.
Ridiculously high difficulty and almost infinite replay value... need I say more?

well .. too many good RPG in fact .. especially on PC (Morrowind, Gothic 1, 2....).

Not true at all. The freedom you have in determining your character's actions and personality make VTM-B much more a part of that genre than the Jap adventure games masquerading as RPGs.
