When sadsack mentioned he had the raw materials for Parts 2 and 3 of the miniseries score, I gladly volunteered to sort out the music. We’ve been blessed with so many amazing Gerald Fried scores that I considered it a privilege to help out in any way I could.
This time round, slate numbers made it easier to identify tracks (and accurately place unused cues) although some tracks didn’t have them, which required a viewing of the miniseries on DVD. Not exactly a chore, as it’s an excellent production.
The left channel weirdness in Part One is still present here; it’s tough to brighten that muffled channel without introducing painful levels of hiss, but I tried my best. I used some noise reduction on the hiss, but some remains. (If you listen to music on headphones, try not to hate me too much.) Interestingly, some tracks miraculously escaped the left channel weirdness entirely.
Another significant problem with Parts 2 and 3 is tape speed issues. Apparently the tape was shredding itself to death while it was being transferred, and you can hear that dragging sound on a number of tracks (but not all, thankfully).
It’s a testament to Fried’s talent that, despite these problems, the music still shines through. I had a whale of a time listening to this. There’s plenty of new material here, including some great action music - “Forest Ambush and Escape”, “The Egyptian War”, “The Massacre.”
One pleasant surprise hidden among these files was a missing cue from Part One - the battle music that immediately precedes “Italy Is Ours.” The previous version is only the last 39 seconds of the cue - available now is an extra two minutes, which I’ve integrated into the other cue. When you download Part Two (or Three) you’ll find this track included in a separate folder.
A note about the Main Title: in the Part One upload, I admitted to defeat in my attempts to revive the original file, and I replaced it with the mono version from the DVD. I was never really happy about that, so I decided to revisit the original stereo file and attempt another fix. Although not perfect, I’m fairly happy with the result, so I’ve reinstated the stereo version in all three episodes. (Fans of the mono version can find it as a bonus track at the end of Part Three.)
If you haven’t already got it, my custom version of Part One (Thread 207681) is still available, and then you’ll need Part Three (Thread 215373) to complete the score.
Many thanks again to sadsack, his anonymous source, and Maestro Fried for providing all this great music.
