Referring to Luigi Cherubini’s Requiem in C minor, Beethoven used to say : "If I
had to write one myself, I should borrow several passages from it note for note".
It is true that this composer, whose name would perhaps have completely
disappeared from concert programmes had it not been for Toscanini and Maria
Callas, was in his own time showered with official honours and, even more
unusually, with the eulogies of his contemporaries. Among them figured not only
Adolphe Adam, but also Berlioz, Schumann, Haydn, Weber, Bellini and
Mendelssohn. We shall quote only Berlioz who hated the Director of the
Conservatoire as much as the man himself, of whom he noted "the cadaverous
face, the gollywog hair and the spiteful eyes". But in spite of this animosity he
Wrote : "The Requiem in its totality is. I consider, the chef-d’oeuvre of its author ."

Founded in 1970 by Francis Bardot, the "Maitrise des Hauts de Seine" (formerly
Maitrise dc la Sainte Chapelle Royale de Paris) is the children’s choir of the
"D�partement", whose name it bears since 1985.
Since 1977 this group of boys is the recognized children’s choir of the "Orchestre
de Paris" and the official one of the "Op�ra de Paris" with which it has
participated in more than five hundred representations. In the course of them it has
been directed by the best conductors (Ozawa, Mehta, Ktibelick, Pr�tre, Corboz,
Rostropovitch, Herreweghe, Tate, etc...) and has sung with the best singers
(Pavarotti, Berganza, Te Kanawa, Domingo, etc...).
As well as these official functions, the Maitrise des Hauts-de-Seine gives
numerous concerts. It has sung most of the oratorios and other sacred works of the
repertoire, but has also produced the first performances of numerous
contemporary works by J. Charpentier, 1\/I. Landowski, R. Calmel, N. Frize, M.
Kouzan, C. Prior and G. Amy.
