The Bad Seed: Complete (1956)
Recording Sessions Restoration
Composer: Alex North
Source: ikitbeni (Thread 198947) + Tsunami Bootleg (where noted).
Format: Mono ALAC (to preserve original bitrate)
Bitrate: 192kbps
Tracks: 20
Duration: 1:02:56
Advisory:
For those unaware the source tracks are far from pristine. Not helping matters, the source could readily be a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, who knows how many generation tape copy which had been digitized and down-sampled from possibly an already lossy source. When it was originally edited and spliced is anyone's guess. That said, the vibrancy of the original recording still survives though, and with a little massaging (detailed below), still provides for a satisfying listen, that is if you're not allergic to archival recordings to begin with.
Tech Notes:
1. The 7 source tracks split and/or spliced into film sequence (significant disparity here).
2. Fidelity is inconsistent and varies from track to track. Distortion is inherent to the source. It's lost data that can't be recovered, but the potholes have been smoothed somewhat to make for a less abrasive listening experience. To that end, only a shallow hi-pass filter was applied.
3. Source mono image leaned right so shifted back to center.
4. Introduce clean fade-in/outs, though they can't completely disguise for lost data resulting from original dodgy edits and splices.
5. Mostly modest (sometimes more aggressive) multi-pass hiss reduction to address the worst of it (where possible). In many cases, even minor hiss reduction substantially affected overall fidelity.
6. Noise scrubbing, click removal, drops repaired as best and where possible.
7. Modest reverb, widening, plus a very, very teensy-weensy application of the exciter to enliven the hollow, tinny sounding mono (and, no, I need not be reminded that it's more or less a fool's errand trying to turn a lossy, low-bit sows's ear into a lossy, low-bit silk purse. But I tried anyway. What more was there left to lose?).
8. Access to a lossless source and the more sophisticated audio repair software available today would probably do wonders.
