The Music
Ive always just loved 'The Living Daylights', the first Bond movie featuring Timothy Dalton and the last featuring a score by acclaimed composer John Barry. What? John Barry? Never heard of him? Those of you too young and too engulfed by RCP major mode power anthems and one boring ostinato after the other, will not know that a part of Zimmer's score for 'Interstellar' was influenced by Barry's scoring style, precisely his knack for being very repetitive. The difference to Zimmer is that Barry knew how to keep it halfway interesting by manipulating melody, harmony and counterpoint. I mean, the scores Barry wrote for quiet drama are already sleep inducing on occasion but still beautiful. You have those wonderful lovely melodies here on this release, too. They are called "Love Theme"... well, with James Bond this is a joke because all he does is searching for the next girl he can fuck (in the rare case he finds true love, its doomed). And you have the cinemascope sound which Barry condensed out of his earlier work, exaggerated it and put it to good use in 'Out of Africa' and 'Dances With Wolves'. And you have (then) fashionable 80s drumpads, combined with an orchestra. Yup, sounds a bit cheap on paper & in real life. And dated. But it presents a very interesting mixture of styles for Barry, all combined into just one product. I dont know what it is with Barry's melodies... they are on the brink of being pure kitsch, yet he saves it by sounding elegant, lush, melancholic, cool and utterly beautiful - all at the same time. "Elegance" is the word I associate the most with John Barry. And who would forget the brass for Bond? Its so overdone (-> "Where has everybody gone") that one has to wonder if Barry meant it as an ironic joke.
For this Edition, I put the music into chronological order, in case of two tracks editing them and combining them differently to form a new track ("Approaching Kara"). This destroys Barry's album design but I think that the music works better this way.
The Sound
Starting with the late '80s, John Barry's music generally received a good mix and a well done mastering, causing 'Dances with Wolves' to be one of the best sounding CDs of all time. In 1998 I bought the green tinted RYKO disc. While the sound is very good, it's missing bass and charm, it sounds a bit brittle and a bit too distant (caused by the artificial reverb Barry loved to pepper his scores with). The problem is that you cant just add bass and youre good. Artificial percussion from the '80s can have TOO much bass which sounds unnatural, their "rubberband" sound elevated to funny levels. So I had to avoid that. I also needed to take into account that I was dealing with 3 different sonic personalities for this score: the pure orchestra, the orchestra combined with drumpads and the songs. Each of them had to be treated differently so that the end result would sound balanced. I think I succeeded, I also think that this version surpasses any other version released so far. The sound is warm, yet dynamic, glossy but not too much.
Cover
Yeah, the cover... would I have had the mind to try something interesting, I would. But I didnt. I couldnt think of anything so all you get is the same old tired design Im infamous for. In fact, I copied the design of the RYKO disc and tried to update it a bit. But it still looks like a '90s CD. As usual, you have two designs to choose from. One has the Deluxe Edition banner, the other does not. For the one without, you have a fitting Jewel Inlay cover that sports "Deluxe Edition". I dont think that the cover is beautiful, but at least it does its job.

I have the same problem. When I had trouble with Mummy Returns Deluxe, I did download a new unzip program and that fixed it. But I just tried that same new program (iZip Unarchiver) and it works up to track 14 after I put in the password, then tells me there's an error and prompts for password again. When I re-enter password the same thing happens again. :(

I'm having the same problem the other guy mentioned and I've downloaded it from several of the mirrors and tried all the extraction apps I have. Bummer. I don't have the ones linked to in the link you linked to (hahaha, how about THAT sentence!?). I'll try my windows tablet first, see if I can extract it there. Just thought I'd let you know. Did you use an updated version of whatever software you use to compress stuff? Maybe that would cause the problem now where it never did before. Just guessing.

Why dont you update your apps or install the ones that were linked to? The problem now many people on a Mac have is that for the two recent releases I used WinRar format 5.0 instead of the much older. I decided to switch for reliability & speed reasons. Now if some company is just lazy, they wont update their libraries to the Rar 5.0. Just saying, that one has been released 2013, so three years should be ample time to update some piece of software. On the other hand, for the core architecture running below, Apple has not even discovered that Multicore CPUs exist, considering iTunes runs on just one CPU core. Im exaggerating, of course... and Im only halfway serious ;)
But why dont you tryout the other apps that were mentioned?

I'll try at least one of them. I just get tired of having so many small, stupid apps on my computer. It clogs up the system. I've already got like 6 different apps just for copressing/uncompressing files. It gets silly after a while. I'll probably get rid of a couple when I download one of the ones you linked to. It's just as easy for me to use my tablet though, which is why I was going to try that route first - don't have to download anything that way.

Thank you! Love this movie and love the soundtrack!
Here's hoping for a deluxe remastered edition of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", since that's an easy one to do. All you need to do is take the 2003 commercial release and arrange the tracklisting like so: 2, 6, 8, 3, 12, 13, 1, 14, 7, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 5, 4, 9, 10, 21 and 11.
The toughest one for me, in my opinion, is the Connery films, especially "Diamonds are Forever" (track 21 with the additional cues requires one to split the tracks and it's a pain to do).

Sonic, if I understand correctly, you used the 1998 Rykodisc CD to produce your Deluxe Edition. Do you know how your work compares to the 2003 EMI "remaster"? Filmtracks claims the 1998 and 2003 CDs are the same and I can't find any mention of the 2003 album being effectively remastered. (Well, it's obviously part of the James Bond 007 Remastered collection, but there is no mention of any mastering engineer in the liner notes.) From the soundwaves, I see your edition is a bit louder than the 2003 release.
By the way, what do you think of the 2003 EMI remasters as a whole? You mentioned earlier that you remastered a few other Barry scores. Are they Bond scores?

In comparison, I love 'Diamonds Are Forever'! And indeed, I remastered the sound. But I did not split the additional cues track, I just kept it as it is. And I have thought about turning it into an Edition... but then I'm unable to find decent material to use for a cover.

Well, I remaster everything I listen to. After all the years, I'm stupid and a bit paranoid about that. And I think that the 2003 EMI remasters range from very good to pretty bad. The ones I like very much would be 'Diamonds Are Forever' (see above) and 'You Only Live Twice' (love it). 'View To A Kill' is ok... but there might be too much stuff missing, I don't like 'Moonraker' or 'Octopussy' or 'OHMSS'. I have them all on CD on my shelf but I never listen to them, their music somehow doesn't work for me.
About other Barry scores: I've worked on 'Frances', 'Dances With Wolves' (though I based my remaster on the 2004 edition) and 'The Black Hole'. The latter sounded very crisp when Intrada released it... and it needs some warmth and bass. I like the result but never thought about releasing it.
And about 'Living Daylights': I don't know about the 2003 remaster. I bought the Rykodisc when it came out and that was it. And the soundwaves on my version are a bit louder and slightly brickwall limited because I made it so ;)

Sonic, one of my very first physical OST discs I bought was The Best of Bond...James Bond 007. Had all the Bond themes on it, and Barry's theme for OHMSS was a stand-out. Plus my best friend and I watched them all together in order. And I always loved the music.
Though I do enjoy Barry's Bond music, my favorite Bond score is GoldenEye by Eric Serra. Terribly underrated. Also my favorite Bond film. Goldfinger is #2.

For me, my favorite Barry Bond score is "The Living Daylights", "A View To A Kill" (shame there's not that much music on the official OST, but what's in there is good), "Moonraker", "Diamonds Are Forever", "You Only Live Twice" and "Thunderball".
As for non Barry Bond scores, I like Eric Serra's "GoldenEye" (it's painfully underrated), David Arnold's "The World Is Not Enough" and "Tomorrow Never Dies", Bill Conti's "For Your Eyes Only" and George Martin's "Live and Let Die".

The ones I don't like are 'License to kill' and... sorry, 'Goldeneye'. I think that the latter is deservedly underrated :D I only like the song by Tina Turner.

The Living Daylights, possibly one my three favourite Bond films and scores. I miss John Barry so much.
Thanks for sharing!
By the way, the first links were not working on my PC either but the Mega one is. ;-)

Sonic, one of my very first physical OST discs I bought was The Best of Bond...James Bond 007. Had all the Bond themes on it, and Barry's theme for OHMSS was a stand-out. Plus my best friend and I watched them all together in order. And I always loved the music.
A double CD edition from the early 90s? Must be the same one I still own. I discovered a lot of Bond films by their music and I used to watch them all year after year. I remember learning OHMSS theme on the piano. I love John Barry.

Thank you very much! I saw the film for the first time yesterday, and, despite it not being perfect, I liked it a lot, and the score is perhaps one of the first James Bond scores that I actually like to listen to. I don't know why, but both "Thunderball" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"'s are to my ear just too... stuck in their own? I wouldn't know, but I love orchestras, and especially on "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" I find it lacking just about something... I mean, I know almost nothing about older James Bond films, and know John Barry didn't score just these three, but many more haha. Nonetheless, thank you very very much!

Thanks. A very under appreciated film (and score). Had a version in in lossy so nice to have A) it in lossless and B) your version (although the a-Ha song is always a fun listen:)

I agree completely. I have huge problems with OHMSS despite everyone saying "ITS SOOOOOOO GORGEOUS!!!!" I just cannot relate, it never did anything for me. Neither do the older scores by John Barry or the others. My favourite is easily this one. I also like the movie even though you can see that it was written with Roger Moore in mind (the humour is a dead giveaway).
BUT: I will still recommend 'You Only Live Twice' and 'Diamonds Are Forever' to you. The available versions sound good enough and I also like their music. Maybe they will be for you, too. 'You Only Live Twice' has a fantastic piece Barry wrote for space (his 'Space March') and it has been copied by countless others throughout the decades - just because it's so good and sounds so... "space-y". Another score that might work for you is 'Octopussy' - even though it only works well in the movie, not on its own, I think.

Just like anything Bond-related with Timothy Dalton is under appreciated. I never understood it, he certainly didn't deserve it. 'License To Kill' is a brilliant, hard hitting Bond.

I'd also throw this in the mix of Barry Bond score recommendations for cheldo1 and that's 'A View to a Kill' (it's a really short soundtrack, as a few key tracks are missing, but I love the Duran Duran title song and the score packs a punch) and 'Moonraker' (gorgeous, despite being short and the mastertapes being missing, due to the score being recorded in Paris. "Flight Into Space", the Shirley Bassey title track, "Cable Car And Snake Fight" and the "Space Lazer [sic] Battle" is great).
Glad to see 'You Only Live Twice', 'Octopussy' and 'Diamonds Are Forever' being on there. Those are great!

While I don't appreciate the original poster's bashing of The Lord Hans Zimmer, I am grateful for the upload.I had the distinct honor and privilege of seeing Him LIVE in concert. He is the most alented composer in Hollywood today.Just a s the 70's and 80's were the era of Williams and Goldsmith,we are in the Zimmer era now...
