It uses old LAME MP3 Encoder with old settings.
There's a harsh cut-off and there's a lot of block artefacts.

^What I said to Lock. A lot of people hold on to it because it cost they a lot of money and they're not willing to share it willy-nilly. Most people here who have rare stuff only share it when they see it pop up online somewhere else. Sometimes that takes days, sometimes years (CA:TWS being a good example).

And what I said to Lock doesn't bother me in the slightest, it's just an observation.

I didn't notice that the first time I looked. It shows in the spectrogram, too. The scale on the sides show maximum of 24 (24*2=48), except it stops at 16kHz.


But, yes, if it's a genuine CD source, it would be 44.1kHz and not 48kHz.
More strange processing.

It could have been ripped to WAV and upscaled to 48kHz "for quality :)" before converting to MP3 with ancient encoder.
Probably explains all the blocky artefacts, too.

I'm not personally, the official album is perfectly fine as is. The FYC is just a curiosity piece, the 30 minutes on this disc represent Morricone's complete contribution as edited to film.

On these place very few people pay attention to quality. They'd take anything if in title wrote 2015, even and youtube rip.
Daily we have witnessed how some people deliberately ripped CD's with software whitch don't calculate READ OFFSET CORRECTION (I-Tunes, EZ-CDDA even WinAmp) or use Mediavel crappy splitter for splitting files.
After that share such ruined rip like shitty lossless.

So tell me why are you surprised now with bad quality share which comes from this OP? There is still time to correct it. As far as I know one of us have this cd, so go ahead SHARE!!! Ah yes it will be a new one non-secure I-Tunes rip and i'm not interested in advance as well as for this one!!!

Thanks for the clarification... I suppose it should have been obvious but never really considered that the only way these FYC's get out there is because the original recipient chose to sell it for profit. I remain sympathetic, yet still thankful, to those who put the dollars forward and then share to the rest of us.

I don't want to sound ungrateful but a lot of times I have the impression that there has been a missed chance to properly release some album. Even for mp3 (which can sound excellent if done it correctly from a lossless source). I'm sure that a lot of times we just get what the releaser got before, but not always is that the case, and I'm afraid is not because that releaser doesn't want to share a good mp3...

Anyway, my comment is not about this release specifically.

The FYC presents the the music as mixed and edited in the film. Whereas the commercial release features the music Morricone recorded for Tarantino. I don't think there is any new music per se but some of the tracks appear quite differently when compared to the commercial album, i.e. editing and looping. I really like the cut here of the main title which features a portion of the Neve track which then segues to an edited, more concise version of the titles. A lossless rip would be ideal.

Morricone only composed approx. 30 minutes of music to script and handed it over to Tarantino to use and edit as he saw fit. So what you're hearing on the FYC is effectively all there ever was or will be other than arrangements after the fact.

No, of course not. It's an expression of a personal opinion, if nothing more. If I had an FYC cd I'd definitely rip it in lossless format, if only to preserve whatever quality was put on the disc in the first place.

Absolutely. That's part of the appeal of FYC releases, I suppose. They're always going to sound different and, if lucky, sometimes contain different versions of cues found on commercial releases :)

You deserve an honest answer to that question, of course. No, I haven't. I already have the commercial release from the Shrine and quite frankly I think that Tarantino's films (although entertaining) are ridiculously overhyped and overblown. For that reason I steer clear of his soundtracks as well. I'm not always overly fond of the pop/rock song inclusion in his scores. It doesn't always work. Far from it actually. In this case the dialogue tracks are abhorring as well. Only makes it worse. I only got this release because it has more work of one of my favourite composers, namely one Ennio Morricone.

Does this album have any tracks not on the official release?

Yes, in a way. You will find each second of content on the FYC on the OST, but in different sections. For example, they took that 12 minute song "neve" from the OST and edited it down to three separate cues. You will find these three cues on the FYC, because that is how the OST track "neve" is heard in the film. Basically, you technically can hear all of the content on the FYC on the OST, but it will not sound the same. The FYC includes the edited versions of the OST tracks that were used in the film, and it contains a perfectly accurate representation of the score as heard in the film. As another example, the opening of the movie uses the first minute and a half of "neve" and then transitions into the first track heard on the OST. The FYC includes that edit. So even though you can listen to "neve" and listen to the first track on the OST, the FYC provides you with the microedits and transitions used in the film. so, no, the FYC does not contain any new musical content that was not on the official release, but it does have the exact cuts and cues that were used in the movie. Hope this helped.

The 70mm projection of this was one of my favorite movie experiences to date. I think the Overture is destined to be my favorite cue. I'd love a link, please. :)

The score-only FYC is different from the commercial OST released on Decca. If you exclude the 4 vocals and 8 tracks of dialog found on the OST you're left with 16 tracks of Morricone's score (50 minutes). The FYC has no vocals or dialog, and the 14 score tracks total just 30 minutes. However, 8 of those tracks are not on the commercial OST.

For the FYC, EAC and TAU spectograms show a hazy cutoff at the 20,000 kbps mark, indicating high-quality lossy. Since this FYC was purchased by me, sealed, it would seem there was no true lossless version of the FYC released. EAC and TAU confirmed that the OST on Decca is lossless.

These 6 tracks are found on both the commercial OST (lossless) and the FYC (lossy):

2) La Puntura della Morte
3) La Lettera di Lincoln (Instrumental)
4) I Quattro Passeggeri
5) Narratore Letterario

Morricone reportedly composed his score from the script, not any filmed scenes. And he provided Tarantino with more than one version of each of the 5 themes written. Since the combined music of the FYC and OST is much more than appeared in the final film, perhaps they represent the various choices Tarantino had before making a final selection. Many tracks are variations of one another and sound similar, so any listening comparison should be done carefully to detect the differences. If anyone comes to different conclusions than I did, please let us all know!
