Hey Guys!

Today I present to you a wonderful score by Jerry Goldsmith, combined with serviceable songs by Matthew Wilder & David Zippel: Mulan. Its actually the third time I attempted a Deluxe Edition. I did the first more than 10 years ago, using horrible sounding lossy source tracks and my OST. A few years later I updated that Edition, created a cover set for it and released on another forum thats long been gone. In both versions, the songs were missing, it also included only two alternates.

For this Edition I wanted to do everything right so I included most of the available alternates as well as the songs. All of them were remastered to make them sound a bit more contemporary without sacrificing the original sound too much. As you probably know by now, I usually attempt to combine tracks in order to improve the listening experience. I did it here, too, copying many of the crossfades done for the movie while also adding my own where I saw fit. I have to say... Im very happy with this Edition, Ive listened to it a lot during the past months. I like the sound very much, it sounds much more dynamic and punchy than before, at the same time adding warmth and charm. Naturally, I eliminated mastering errors, drop-outs or pops and clicks present in the files I used. BTW, the files I used were completely lossless; combined with my high resolution mastering (32/192) I was able to update the sound considerably. Im also happy that I included the alternates, even though most of them are only slightly different to their finally used counterparts.

But theres something else. Contrary to the hack-and-gone-job I usually achieve for the covers, this Edition sports several cover sets which are among the most beautiful Ive ever seen. Many people would disagree but the covers I usually provide are boring, uninspired, lacking creativity. Dont correct me on that, its true.

So in order to add something remarkably special to this set, I asked Heidl (http://forums.ffshrine.org/members/heidl-428356) of HQCovers (http://hqcovers.net/) fame if he would be game to provide some covers of his own. Ive always been admiring his marvellously inspired covers and a few months ago I finally wanted to make my admiration known (thankfully he doesnt mind a fanboy like me). We talked a bit and after a while I asked him if we might try a collaboration - I was giddy like a schoolboy when he agreed. This Deluxe Edition of Mulan is the result.

Instead of providing just one cover, he did 4 very distinct, beautiful and professional cover sets. On the picture above you can see all of the front covers he did, the upper row shows 3 of his covers, the 4th is in the middle of the bottom row. The other two (bottom row, left and right) are two of my own covers which look pretty tepid in comparison, if you ask me. I cannot thank him enough for lending his skills to this project of mine, without his additions it wouldnt be what it now is. One thing is for sure: should Intrada release their own version of Mulan in the near future, they wont be able to match the beauty of this set, its impossible.

Though Id still buy an Intrada set without hesitation.

But enough with all the talk, this time Im very confident in wishing you much fun with this set as it will be a grace for every soundtrack collection. And dont forget to have a look at Heidl's post below this one; he prepared an awesome presentation!

MULAN (THE DELUXE EDITION)
Custom Covers Set

This set of custom covers was a real challenge for me, working together with the God of Remastering, I was forced to deliver something special, and it kept me headscratching for a while.

It took me almost four weeks to finish these artworks and I really have to thank SonicAdventure for his incredible amount of patience and trust. He even encouraged me to take some time off in between! A rare thing, especially in a reputation-driven community like this one.

I've created 4 different sets of covers and included a few alternate versions of front covers and back inlays (included in the d/l-link above). This way you can decide where you want to have the label "Deluxe Edition". Either on the front cover or inside the tray.

My first custom cover is the most traditional one in the whole bunch, relying almost entirely on officially licensed promo material. The only real customization was the addition of a few red tinted brushstrokes to make it a little more exciting (ditto for the two CD labels). The seemless transition from the front cover to the inner sleeve was tricky. I ended up using the very same image and removed the Mulan character by hand, which was quite some work.

() () () () ()

The front image of the second artwork was basically ready for pickup, all I did was darken the bottom area to get a better contrast with the text. I really love the combination of blue and orange in this one. The back cover features a cool drawing of Mulan in a fighting pose. I wrapped the text around it and it worked wonderfully. I also think the red CD labels create a beautiful contrast to the rest of the artwork. I used the official cover art for the first disc and tried to match the design (colours, textures, shadings, etc...) on the second disc.

() () () () ()

The following custom cover is certainly the most experimental one in this collection. It prominently features a beautiful drawing on the front cover, one of which I unfortunately can't find the original source anywhere. All other images, including an awesome alternate movie logo, are part of the early concept art drawings from the film. I really love the Chinese influence on this one. By relying entirely on painted images, I managed to achieve a very distinctive look. Also, I'm sorry about the forced line breaks within the tracklists on the back. The narrow horizontal space takes its toll here.

() () () () ()

The final cover was actually the one I started with into this series. And it was also the last one I've finished. All in all this was obviously heavily influenced be the Lord of the Rings Complete Recordings. I thought with this being a Deluxe Edition and all, I needed one of those fancy book-style designs. This would work far better as a leathery digipack, but since it's supposed to be printed out, a Jewel case template was necessary.

I'd like to once again thank SonicAdventure for coming up to me and offering me the chance to participate in one of his amazing works (he is clearly the best audio engineer here, let's face it!). And I also want to thank YOU for reading through all of my nonsense.

If you like my work, please stop by at my blog (http://www.hqcovers.net) for even more custom covers.

Just when I thought I went and made a good Mulan set, Sonic one-ups me as usual. Obviously my so-called good set just got relegated to the trash can--and am I upset about that? NOT A CHANCE!! :) Sonic, you've done it again! And Kudos to Heidl for the outstanding artwork as well!!! Pats on the back both ways :)

No, dont delete it! Theres always someone who doesnt like that I combine tracks or other stuff. So please upload it... after all, how many versions of Interstellar are now online? A bit of Goldsmith to counter that cannot hurt IMO.

Youre so right, now that I have this version I wonder how I could have been so daft to even release the first version of mine! Result: Ive thrown it away, additionally deleting everything connected to it (with the exception of the front cover you can see on the left side of the bottom row).

 The West will never get an authentic Chinese score for a Chinese film.
The audience will never stomach it.
The closest we'll ever get is a random mix of sounds from various countries like in The Corruptor, but it will always be a hybrid of different genres.

I remember not liking that about the film when I first watched it.
I laughed at all the songs.
Disney really ought to just stick to their usual white films.

But, now that we have Pixar and other studios, anything's more than possible today.

I'd love a remake of this with much more accuracy and balls.

But that may never happen with the live-action remake.
Mulan (1998) - News (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120762/news)

I liked Ming-Na Wen voicing Mulan. That was appropriate, but not much else in the film was exactly noteworthy.
It was about as noteworthy as Jason Alexander singing as a gargoyle.

Hey now why crossfade a song with an instrumental cue? Not cool :P

BTW since I removed the vocals the score seems to end quite abruptly at the end of "Coming Home." Probably not much that could have been done to fix this but thought I'd point it out.

Of course, youre correct. But on the other hand, Jerry couldnt compose a full score in the pentatonic scale for a movie aimed at international audiences. After all, the continents most likely watching an animated movie by Disney are the North American and European continent where the heptatonic scale has been in use for centuries. As a token of respect (admittedly, probably more for reasons of providing atmosphere), Goldsmith did actually compose one piece in pentatonic scale: "Victory Parade" which was used as source music.

Though it might have been an interesting experiment to employ someone like Tan Dun.

Ming-Na is of course lovely. I only call her "Aunt May" now, since Ive been enjoying her playing on 'Agents of Shield'... sort of like a stupid, personal play on her being the cavalry and being reminded of Spidey's aunt at the same time.

Well, I exaggerated. I actually only crossfaded the reverb tail of the song into the beginning of "Burnt Village". I did so because the movie cuts to the burnt village the moment the song ends mid-sentence. Since that was a striking effect to shock the audience, I wanted to repeat it for my Edition where I sort of juxtaposed the funny song with the painful drama of Goldsmith's piece. Furthermore, on the OST I never liked how the song was ending so abruptly, without the movie it didnt serve a purpose - so I wanted to add some sense back.

The end of "Coming Home" was a similar situation, in the movie it ended because of the funny antics of Mushu who then started the song "True to your heart". I couldnt bring myself to include that hideous piece of trash so I just attempted to keep the feel of "Coming Home" by following it with Xtina's version of "Reflection".

Impressive work of you two. The covers are amazing. I can't choose just one, hahah. As for the remastering, it sounds okay to me. I'm no audiophile or expert so I can't really diference out anything else than the basic stuff anyone can see, and the real difference between FLAC and MP3. Your remastering sounds alright to me. Although I like stuff with a bit more of a punch, not a bass boost but more of a stereo-in your ear feel.

I don't explain myself well, so just ignore what I just said, it makes no sense. I liked it. :)

You did explain yourself more than well enough. Because at the end of the day, something that sounds alright to your ears is more than enough. The processing necessary for remastering shouldnt be audible.

I have the belief that scores without the movie they were composed for, are a different beast altogether and should be able to stand on their own feet. Two different media, a movie an audio-visual experience, a score just sound in need to support itself without aid. Therefore I always aim at a cohesive listening experience, trying to round up and complete their profile.

I see where you're coming from, and I have the belief that a score should be able to stand on it's own even when in it's original form. To me, a complete score is like a book, divided into chapters, groups of paragraphs, paragraphs, and sometimes even single sentences. When played all together in chronological order, they tell the story of the film. :)

Yep, but they don't have to tell the exact story of the film (if the film is horrible) if you know what I mean.

I kinda agree with Sully even though I don't think the way SonicAdventure does it it's any wrong. For example, what if there's a cue, an specific one cue you love and like to listen all over many times, but it's merged on a long track with other cues you aren't interested on? :P

You mention a common problem with very long tracks. Many, many years ago the CD offered the possibility to not only include tracks but also indices within those tracks. CD players equipped with additional "Index"-buttons could navigate towards those. This possibility still exists, but it is rarely used today. Even in the beginning it was mostly employed for classical music (and for some CDs like JMJ "Oxygene" or Genesis' "Invisible Touch").

When played all together in chronological order, they tell the story of the film. :)

Yup, Im coming from classical music. Your book example sounds nice - although a book takes at least 2 days to read through whereas a score at max takes three hours should one want to listen from beginning to end. Im always listening to a score from beginning to end, so - to me - it should form a complete experience. And with a book, Im not picking individual chapters, for me, it destroys the evolving and developing storyline... I read it from beginning to end, too.

You people are just marvelous!!!!

Just one question: did I miss something or the End Credits by Goldsmith is missing?

End Credits? Werent that just songs? I deleted most songs for a reason... I just hate them. Vanessa-Mae never was a good violinist and the other stuff... blegh. And in case Goldsmith created a suite, patching together several individual pieces weve heard before, I dont use that as well. Because... well, it isnt an original piece.

Before someone asks: on most compilations you can find a second suite (the first suite is my first track, "Ouverture" - yes, I love the French spelling). This second suite isnt by Goldsmith, it was recorded by Erich Kunzel for the Cincinnati Pops album "Magical Musicals". For that reason Ive deleted it.

---------- Post added at 08:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:54 PM ----------

Reflection also opens with a Goldsmith cue faded into the song.

Right, I forgot. Thanks!

Wowzers. Fantastic effort, and one that is much appreciated.
Love the film and score so much and I totally come from the same place that a score, in most cases, should be treated separately from the film as on it's own it is a different entity. I always prefer to get a good listening experience rather than a strict chronological order. That doesn't mean I don't like to get as much music as possible, just that it's nice when some thought is given to how it will be experienced away from the film.

Would love to see an Intrada release as well.

And I agree. Though I always hesitate to deviate from a strict chronological order because in my experience the best composers are able to develop their themes/motifs over the course of the composition. I dont usually like to disturb that musical "flow". Though in some cases I should have, Im thinking about the piece "The Spiders" from my set of 'Chamber Of Secrets'.

But really, I should have asked myself this question more often: can the listening experience be improved if the material isnt chronological? I will look into that for future releases.

Would love to see an Intrada release as well.

Me too. I expected it several years ago, when Intrada announced their cooperation with Disney. I think its a disgrace that they havent released it yet.

For example, what if there's a cue, an specific one cue you love and like to listen all over many times, but it's merged on a long track with other cues you aren't interested on? :P

Yep, I think the Hobbit scores suffered badly because of that. Well, beside a lot of other things...

Thanks SonicAdventure! I'm going to just go ahead and say I actually prefer SA's cover of Mulan putting on the suit. I like that angle, lighting and the general mood it conveys :)

Well Shore does not write short cues. he writes longform suites, that are recorded in parts, so basically the tracks you hear on the albums start and end exactly where the music on the sheet music does.

Yep, I think the Hobbit scores suffered badly because of that. Well, beside a lot of other things...

I dont mind the Hobbit scores taking their time or to include 10-minute pieces. I think the biggest problems were a possibly strained working relationship with PJ and his odd demands. In any case, we havent yet heard the complete scores, I really hope that that will happen someday. I didnt like the OSTs of LOTR either but I loved the box sets.

And yes, the second Hobbit has turned into one of my favourite scores, I love it.

Sonic, you see? I told you that you should include them! :)

Well, one thing is for sure: Im better at "remastering" than at creating covers for said "remasters". And Im perfectly happy with that! :)

I'm still not happy with my covers.

Well Shore does not write short cues. he writes longform suites, that are recorded in parts, so basically the tracks you hear on the albums start and end exactly where the music on the sheet music does.

I know he does and that's totally fine. But imho what all three Hobbit scores were desperately missing, were a few concert arrangements or at least some streamlined album cuts. Certain tracks start out just phenomenal for 2-3 minutes, only to meander around for some additional 4 minutes. I also hope for Complete Recordings, hopefully the tracks will be edited/split up better then.

TLMerman -- that's the password I used and it just kept prompting me for it. Again and again and again. I've seen this happen numerous times with other things I've downloaded from Final Fantasy. I have an up to date iMac and browse with Firefox. I just downloaded something successfully from Final FAntasy the other day and then today this happened. I don't get it.

Just in case you might still read this: next time type in the password instead of copy/pasting it. Sometimes copy/pasting doesn't work.

The links have been expired again. I'd love to hear the alternates, as the version of the score I got (36 tracks) has just two or three alternate presentations. Thank you for doing this, SonicAdventure!

Thanks a lot!!!

Awesome. Another brilliant Goldsmith score. My version was fairly old as well. Thanks Sonic and TeddyV for the update.
