This is great work, 3DMan! Two minor points, however:

1) The Invincible music from the Mega Drive Sonic 2 is missing. Maybe you could upload it seperately and/or redo the second RAR?
2) No Sonic Jam tracks? Would have been perfect for rounding off this collection, especially as Mega and Gems Collection are present.

Aside from these two minor criticisms, the collection is otherwise amazing. Really good for scratching my Game Gear/Master System Sonic itches.

I love the selection of music, but I noticed some things.

-The Sonic Labyrinth and Tails Skypatrol tracks are kind of outdated rips from SMSPower, as some of their songs don't loop properly and Sonic Labyrinth is missing some small tracks.

-The Sonic Blast (GG) rip is missing its final boss music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=To8erW6fwuk).

Could you please fix these problems (and other problems if I missed any)? Also, would it be okay if you can put the soundtrack to SegaSonic the Hedgehog (Aracde) to this collection?

---------- Post added at 06:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:44 PM ----------

Also, is the Sonic 2 Game Gear soundtrack missing? Could you please add that back to the soundtrack soon?

UPDATE.)

-Fixed Part 2 [MP3] that was missing Sonic 2 (GG)

-Fixed Tails' Skypatrol, Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic Blast & Sonic Pocket Adventure on parts 6, 7 & 8 respectively. (Fixed the sound quality and added the missing tracks like Sonic Blast's Final Boss Theme)

-Added SegaSonic the Hedgehog (Arcade) on Part 3

Yeah, the tracks are great. Thanks ever so much. Now all that's missing from my classics collection are the Sega Saturn FMV musics from Sonic 3D Blast (which I'm sure will be in another thread and hopefully in better quality someday) as well as the first 3 Sonic TV show music (same as them) and I'm all set.

I guess that music in a FMV file is either difficult to separate or isn't proper lossless. I can't be sure.

This was an awesome update. I'm still bothered by the unnecessary 2-3 second silence at the start of most Sonic R tracks and others, which I hope you can fix in the next update. Also, is the Sonic 1 Genesis tracks all from the remastered 2013 ones?

Edit: Is all the stuff from Sonic Mega Collection here? Wikipedia mentions Masaru Setsumaru as an additional composer for the "Plus" edition of the compilation. Also, could we include "Open Your Heart MJZ Mix" and "Sonic Heroes No-GTR Mix" from Sonic Gems Collection. I know they're modern songs, but they're still a part of the compilation.

Fixed the Sonic R tunes.

Now about the Mega Collection portion, I've verified that everything is there as it should. In actuallity, Masaru is credited alongside Hideki Kobayashi for the "Staff Roll" tune which I simply forgot to mention (pardon me).

I excluded the Remastered IOS tracks from Sonic 1 & 2 in favor of the original Sega Genesis ones, because the former has a obnoxious noise removal applied to it that makes all the music sound garbled which is unacceptable to the quality standards of this Collection.

The two Gems Collection remixes that you mentioned are excluded from this collection since it is exclusively and strictly about the "Classic Era". But I am saving those two for some future releases I'm planning to do.

There is an unused track within' the game's files, but it's only used for testing purposes. Considering that unused tracks for other games are included here, wouldn't that also be here? I don't know, maybe it didn't fit in the way it was composed with other tracks, but it's worth mentioning.

Seconded. I hope this gets updated in, this collection is amazing otherwise.

EDIT: Just noticed the post about it not being included because of the excessive track count. Honestly, and I think most would agree, if we're already going to be downloading a huge collection with hundreds of songs, we wouldn't mind a few more for the sake of completion :)

Same here. If they get put in, I hope it includes the extended intros and outros for a lot of the stages from the Japanese betas of the game. The !!!!! set only includes a couple of them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrgKjrNr6iQ

Thank you for making this huge collection! I can't wait to download it when I get home from work.

I have to poke a little fun at the OP by him saying that Sonic CD's soundtrack is so big it deserves it's own albums. It's like dude, you just compiled and uploaded a 30-disc compilation. What's it to add another 2 CDs to add the US and JP Sonic CD soundtracks? LOL.

Thanks again though, great work!!

UPDATE)

-Added Sonic CD at Part 3 with everything there is (Looped Japanese and American Soundtracks, Beta Intros, Beta Tracks, Album Tracks and Remixes)
-Added the FMV Music of Sonic 3D Blast (Sega Saturn) at Part 7 (Had to rip'em straight from the game itself)
-Added two unused Mega Collection tracks at Part 9 and moved the 3 Sonic CD remixes from Gems Collection to Part 3

Also the collection now clocks at over 24 hours of music.

You're the best 3DMan :)

Would it be possible to rip the alternative level music from the PC releases of Sonic 3/& Knuckles? The level themes that included voice samples had to be replaced with all new compositions (likely an audio emulation issue), but I can understand if you might want to leave it out for reasons of it being released on home computer.

In addition, and just for accuracy's sake, the Michael Jackson tags in Sonic 3's should probably be removed (with two exceptions). It's a huge topic that's probably best saved for another place (See: Sega Legends: Michael Jackson and Sonic 3 (http://www.sega-16.com/2009/05/sega-legends-michael-jackson-sonic-3/). It's also a topic rife with misinformation and a blinding eagerness to draw connections where there is none. (See: PopFiction) It's pretty confirmed he composed at least a few melodies for a 'beta' Sonic 3 soundtrack, which were then transcribed by someone at Sega into an FM rendition of that and played back to him later. At some point in the process (or immediately upon listening) he was displeased with how his music sounded coming from a Genesis and ultimately dropped out of the project. The sound team that eventually released the published Sonic 3 soundtrack created new compositions inspired from Jackson's previous work, while incorporating some of their own as filler (See: Ice Cap Zone).

However, and this is where I get into personal theory, I'd say there are two Jackson compositions left more or less intact in the published game, maybe: The first is the mini boss theme, which Michael would later sample in Blood on the Dance Floor, so its been argued he composed at least the drums in that melody (debatably the most characteristic part of that track), so he probably deserves artist credit there. This is also more believable given that it's a small sample in a largely non-musical context, so Michael may have let them just use it. OR he could just be including it in Blood on the Dance Floor as a nostalgic little nod to that time he went to Sega and had a lot of fun with the music people, I don't know.

The second is the staff roll, which... ehh, this one is even more arguable, but I'd say its safe to assume one of two things: The composition was either entirely Michael's, or he at least had a large enough part in the foundation of the song's melody to receive artist credit. There are some eerily-similar chords between Sonic 3's staff roll and Jackson's Stranger in Moscow, and that combined with a lot of developer statements on the topic... it might be safe to leave his credit on this track.

But, don't mind me, I'm just a Michael Jackson nut too. Anyway thanks again for the awesome compilation, it's really something special having the entire history of Sonic in one place.

I'd be interested in getting the PC version tracks but sadly they're too obscure to the point getting clean versions of them is near impossible unless I go straight for the game files like I did for the 3D Blast's FMV's (are you happy now Julayla?) for the tunes, but even then I suspect that it wouldn't do much since the source files are reportedly low-quality MIDI's.

As for the Michael Jackson matter, I'll keep the tags as they are since there's enough of evidence from several sources, official, unofficial, you name it, that he was involved or was at least a musical guide for the compositions in question, the musical similarities are way too striking to be a just a mere coincidence (e.g: the Sonic 3 Miniboss theme, Ice Cap Zone, Launch Base Zone and the Sonic 3 Staff Roll Tune).

I think that's just the thing though. There isn't much evidence, and all of it is very anecdotal. The overwhelming majority of developers and musicians coming forward have given interviewers false and conflicting information. This doesn't necessarily mean they're doing it on purpose; it's somewhere between flawed memories and leading interview questions. And as I posted earlier, he did compose the majority (if not all) of Sonic 3's level themes before that entire soundtrack was scrapped and used as inspiration for all new compilations. Ice Cap Zone is also 100% not Michael... actually let me pull that source, it's the name of the Buxer's band or something. Also as posted earlier, he probably did the mini boss and staff roll themes, but that's it.

I'm just a stickler for accuracy, I don't mean to sound ungrateful. Thanks a bunch man :)

No problem, having feedback like this is better than none, trust me.

But continuing on, maybe I'll change the tags one these days to avoid bringing up this muddled matter. Also I got my Ice Cap Zone example above confused with Carnival Night Zone in which there's clearer similarities to Michael's work. Sorry for that blunder but working lately hours and hours on tinkering, ripping and ordering music will confuse anyone's head for a while.

Totally totally, and thanks for being so chill/helpful too. To be honest, I wanna throw together a little 5-10 minute video presentation comparing all the new evidence with old stuff and make it all easily-watchable, but that's for the future. To move on to a new topic, if you're looking for music to add to the collection, I think there's still Sonic EduSoft on the SMS and the demo track from the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Auto Demo for the GG. I'll see if I can come up with any more obscure songs. :)

Hey, I hope it isn't too much, but can you please put the Japanese/European and American Sonic CD soundtracks on their own separate discs (Sonic CD Japan/Europe would be Disc 8 and Sonic CD US would be disc 9)? I feel like Disc 7 is too big and cluttered.

Also, and you're probably busy with changes already, but would we see the soundtrack to Sonic EduSoft (http://www.smspower.org/Games/SonicsEdusoft-SMS) and the Sonic 2 GG Auto-Demo (http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_2_%288-bit%29_AutoDemo) theme as well? Again don't mean to sound ungrateful, I'm super appreciative to even have a collection as comprehensive as this, and it's cool seeing what are (arguably) the final pieces fall into place :D

EDIT: One last request to go with these two: Sonic 3's file select music demonstrates a strange bug (https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=54&v=JmWgcM0CkKw) where, after about 47 minutes of play, the system greatly increases the gain of one of the song's instruments. Someone made a vgm file for the oddity (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/47921869/Permanent/File%20Select%20bonus.vgz), and it would be a nice addition to the rest of all the beta/prototype stuff here. Reminds me of that one theme from Vermilion that kept looking upwards infinitely.

I'm not a fan of the way the intros have been implemented in the the Sonic CD JP Soundtracks. The big problem being that I'm pretty sure several of them, such as Collision Chaos and Wacky Workbench (expect the B Mix) among others, were probably supposed to be outros as opposed to intros. Not only that, they're poorly implemented. Like, the editing is really bad here. I can tell when the !!!!! files are used, since those are edited excellently, as the intros are connected to the songs without there being an obvious cut. Considering this was the big draw for me on this update, I'm severely disappointed. https://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_CD_JPN/PAL_Looping_Project This should give you a good idea on how it's supposed to be.

---------- Post added at 03:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:31 PM ----------

Also, there really shouldn't be any excuse over the remasters of Sonic 1&2 not being here. I know you had your reason, but here me out. Most of the games selected for this collection are made from 8bit and 16bit hardware. They needed chipsets, as opposed to digital recording hardware. As the result, how great were they gonna sound to begin with? I know there's a big appeal for retro music (hence this collection), but we have to except that at one point, music for these games were made very cheaply. Besides, I don't actually hear any problems with the remasters, since I don't have great hearing like most do on this website. Just put it on here, and I don't think there'll be more bothering. Lastly, I just realized the link I sent isn't perfect. Some MP3s don't work, and the !!!!! files with the intros and outros should still be kept. Sorry if this is so much to handle. I just want this collection to be in best shape once more people find out about it.

Edit: Scratch that. Only Wacky Workbench doesn't work on the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExNQy5CeRfI&index=17&list=PLs7_awFaeFZFsfYIsuyBOmUQWcNEbiaP8 And about the !!!!! files, keep Quartz Quadrant B Mix. The two links should help you on the rest.

I'm sorry for the less-than stellar job, but manipulating the Red-Book audio that fades-out at the end of each track was a nightmarish job for me and I begrudgingly chickened out given the constraints. However I'm currently re-doing the JP Soundtrack portion all over with a version of the Red-Book audio that DOESN'T fade-out at the end. The results are becoming a helluva lot more coesive.

It certainly is much butter this time around. Yet, Collision Chaos 'G' Mix JP and Wacky Workbench 'G' Mix JP are missing their respective outros (this is only from listening to the MP3 version). However, considering how difficult the process has been, I'll let it slide for now. And about the Sonic 1&2 Remasters, forget about it. It just occurred to me how inconsistent sounding the Genesis soundtracks will be after such inclusion.

I just want to let you know that you have some Tails Skypatrol songs mislabeled on the collection.

"Invincible 1" is actually the music for the Metal Island Boss. There's only one invincibility music and that's "Invincible 2" on the collection.
"Find Emerald" is actually the music for the Sega logo at the beginning of the game.
"Metal Island Boss" is actually the music for the intro of the game.

If you could fix those changes and arrange them to more proper places, I will be very grateful.

For Sonic 3D Blast Saturn, Rusty Ruins and Volcano Valley have their tracks flipped (Act 2 is written as Act 1). However, this is a common mistake, since the Saturn and PC data have the tracks in that order, but plays in proper order within the game for unknown reasons. Considering the soundtracks are posted as they are ripped, this mistake is in all available downloads, including this one. I don't fault you for this mistake, but it's a strange oddity nevertheless.

Two

Version 1: Good Future (Which I have thanks to the Redbook Audio from the Windows version)
Version 2: Bad Future (Labelled as "Robotnik" in Sonic Boom and on this album)

Also in regards to the music from Sonic Mega Collection, "Unused Music I" is really the Staff Roll from the GCN version while "Staff Roll" is the Mega Collection Plus version. There is a real "Unused Music II" however, if we bump the original "Unused Music II" to "Unused Music I," which according to an ADX rip is known as "tutorial.adx"

And the rip of the 8-bit Sonic 2 is missing the music from the Autodemo presentation (which sounds like one of Naofumi Hataya's compositions)

True, but it is part of the classic series

HunterTech

It might be related to the classic series, but it's release of years after the fact does disqualify it. This collection pretty much represents the 1991-1997 years in the hedgehog's life. Granted, the inclusion of the Mega and Gems Collection music, which is 2002 and 2005, is to be noted, but those are directly related to said games from the era. Plus, with that logic, Episode 1 and 2 of Sonic 4 would need to be included as well. But it wouldn't because they, along with Mania, are games released in the current era.

It's up to the OP to decide if he wants to include it or not.

Our good friend 3DMan got hit with copyright strikes and no longer has access to his MEGA account. So I was called upon to re-upload his stuff, which I do have 80% of. So here's the Classic Collection!

I'll get to uploading the rest of the Sonic stuff later. Someone else is gonna have to take care of Mario & Luigi.

there are a few tracks that are missing from Sonic Jam's section, which can be found in the game's sound test. I was able to record them through Audacity (in the SSF emulator) and save them as MP3 files.

Do you have the rest of the songs from this upload in flac though?

Hey 3DMan, if you see this, can I request a "fix" of the drowning theme from Sonic Pocket Adventure? Your version has an instrument in it that makes it sound just, not right, while it's supposed to sound like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRde_CcbLeo

You don't have to upload the whole collection again, just this track. I'd appreciate it, thanks in advance!

Ok... I want to suggest some things I saw it's missing in this collection.

==============================

1) Sonic ~ You Can Do Anything

According with the SONIC RETRO PAGE (http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_-_You_Can_Do_Anything):

The "Alternate Version" has exactly the same lyrics, but Keiko Utoku seems to be have redubbed her singing as her inflection on certain vocals are different.

The original version can be listen HERE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdG9YXXuBt8), and the "Alternate Version", present in this set, can be listen HERE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJNR68XmFCk).

==============================

2) Eggman's Tower

The beta version of SegaSonic The Hedgehog have many different things from the final version. And one of them is the Eggman's Tower theme is played into the Landslide Limbo stage with a more enjoyable sample choices.
> Eggman's Tower (final) (https://youtu.be/Ky8qYWL07Fc)
> Landslide Limbo (beta) (https://youtu.be/6D-z5Tv9Zpo)

==============================

3) Sonic 3 & Knuckles Collection musics

The PC version have the musics in midi format. More than this, many tracks are differents from the original games. The Sonic 3 Complete (http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_3_Complete) ROM Hack have those music ported for this hack for free selection.

Add the midi soundtrack could be just the right choice to do. Add the ported tracks is opitional, once they are not official musics.

==============================

4) Sonic World's correct track name

The official name of the Sonic World theme is called "Sonic A Go Go!!" (who is used for the theme of the Sonic Pocket Adventure's Neo South Island Zone Act 1). It's just a little fix, but who leads to another version of the music, and the origin of the original music's name.

==============================

5) Sonic A Go Go!! (Samba de Amigo ver.)

One of the unused musics (//forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=38225&view=findpost&p=934059) from the first Samba de Amigo for the Dreamcast is this Sonic World theme, named "Sonic A Go Go!!". This version of the music is a "complete" version of the music, with beginning, half and end. In the "loop version" found in the Sonic Jam's Sonic World don't have the end part. So, add this version is just the fair decision.

==============================

6) Missing Sonic games

Many old, lost Sonic arcade games was found and dumped from the last years up to today, who includes the SegaSonic Bros. (https://youtu.be/fEqVsrCvkIU), SegaSonic Popcorn Shop (https://youtu.be/ExhnJpE3NBg?list=PL-vD6rIjXrcLh4ZKwa_s9QA3XobFJKYPj), Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car (https://youtu.be/5MlCHzZmmL8?list=PL-vD6rIjXrcI2YR3H0oBkQrRVfPxNf9Jz), the SegaSonic Cosmo Fighter Galaxy Patrol (https://youtu.be/4exiFrL7v0Q), and the Sonic's Edusoft (https://youtu.be/DXos4l0nNlU?list=PL-vD6rIjXrcIQck8S1ykKSbOb7g2sON02).

Once this collection of musics includes musics from betas and unreleased games, it's just fair to add the musics from those games too, once they was all discovered and dumped.

==============================

7) Musics from Sonic CD Prototype 510

The Proto 510 version os Sonic CD have some different musics from the final japanese version, who includes the title screen theme (Tracks 25 and 26), and the Power Sneakers theme (track 28). These two tracks was included in the pack.

But the track 31, the track for the special stage, is longer than the original. It lasts 4 and a half minutes, and is considerably more "remix" than the final version. Once the music list do not specifying the version used for this collection, it could be interesting to check the info and, if the case, add the track (or replace the "cut" version with the "proto 510" version, who is not the best option).

Thanks for the attention... :)

==============================

And now we have an official Sonic 3 prototype build containing said tracks. Turns out the Sonic 3 & Knuckles Collection songs were the originals after all. :)
