But ... what use was an opera overture?
Well, it had generally three parts:
First, a little loud while spectators settled and spoke all the fun of being in paradise as "La Fenice". Then , slow and hypnotic, to condition minds to listen carefully and then flew a little more (to wake up a little) . Now , the opera could begin ...
The opening of "the coronation of Darius" is a very good illustration ...
