Le Voyage En Armnie (Bande Originale du Film de Robert Gudiguian par Arto Tunboyaciyan) 2006

Arto Tunboyaciyan Born in 1957 in G small town on the outskirts of Istanbul is a Turkish-Armenian musician.

It is famous in the avant garde folk scene, having performed in more than 200 discs enEuropa before arrival in the United States, where he initiated collaborations with numerous jazz legends ... He has also worked with the Turkish artist Sezen Aksu, the Greek singer Helefheria among other representatives of laWorld Music.

This is a real fascinating soundtrack.

About the movie:

This is a story about returning to ones ancestral homeland. Anna is a cardiologist who discovers her father has fled to his native Armenia after being diagnosed with a heart problem. Despite their contentious relationship, she sets out to bring her father back for this operation. Anna is a tough-minded, headstrong woman with little feeling for her fathers homeland or patience with its politics and socially intrusive culture, yet she finds this journey not only a reunion of sorts, but one of reconciliation as well.

About the composer Arto Tunboyaciyan:

Arto Tunboyaciyan, percussionist and singer, was born in Turkey in 1957 of Armenian descent of the Anatolian root.

One of his greatest influences of music and life was his brother Onno, musician himself, who encouraged Arto to develop his character not just as a brother but as a friend and as a musician.
At the age of 11, he began his career playing and recording traditional music with his brother establishing himself as a professional musician throughout Turkey and Europe.
Music is a fundamental element of his life, by which he tries to communicate his great values: love, respect and truth.

In 1981 Arto moved to United States to explore new creative influences and to add a new dimension to his own vision of life. Since then, he has given solo concerts of his own music throughout the world.

In 1985 two solo albums were released on the Dutch Keytone Label: Virginland and Main Root.
He started a meaningful cooperation with the Armenian oud player Ara Dinkjian, with whom he recorded in duo Tears of Dignity and Onno for the Greek label Libra Music. Two wonderful albums in which music "has the sound of my life" using Arto's words. Onno is the homage to his brother Onno Ohannes Tunboyaciyan suddenly disappeared in 1996, in which compositions are a clear expression of Arto's memories of his brother when he was alive and after his death.

With Ara Dinkjian he founded as well the group NIGHT ARK and recorded the following albums: Picture, Moments, Wonderland and Petals On Your Path (released in February 2000 by Universal Music).
In 1998 he participated at the Italian project TRIBOH, conceived and co-led with the vocalist Maria Pia De Vito and the pianoplayer Rita Marcotulli, recording the CD Triboh for the Italian label Polosud.
He is a member of the group WALKING FISH together with Matthew Garrison, Jim Beard, Gene Lake and Bob Malach.

Recently his latest album with Paul Winter Every Day is a New Life has been released by Living Music.

Currently he is working with Armenian musicians with whom he founded his new group THE ARMENIAN NAVY BAND, a small orchestra rooted in Armenian and Anatolian traditional music with the inspiration and sound of today. The project was born in 1998 after the meeting in Yerevan with young Armenian musicians coming from different music experiences (ethnic and contemporary Armenian music). Since then the idea to create a group which could represent the sound of Armenia of today became concrete. The two albums that represent the current aspects of Arto's music search are Avci, a movie soundtrack composed by the artist, and Bzidik Zinvor. Bzidik Zinvor has been recorded in Armenia and is the result of the very first meeting with several musicians from Yerevan. Arto's original compositions express the sound of the past generations along with today's life: this is what he calls "avantgarde folk".

A guy from Armenia wrote about this album:

I would call this pop music, but not in a demeaning way at all, an certainly not what you've heard from Armenian pop music. This album is original, there are more than a few songs that push Armenian music forward, which is really refreshing to hear in this day with our music being mixed with hip hop and all the rest of that crap. Also unlike "classical" albums this one is really easy to get into. There is at least one track that uses electronic instruments, not sampled, original, well suited. The album is also very well structured, with a healthy mix of songs/vocals into instrumental parts.

I am really happy to see an album such as this, pushing Armenian music forward. We need more artists who strive to seek originality within our music whilst not fearing to use innovative techniques such as electronic instruments. To just mix hip hop/techno/trance into Armenian music is one thing, to manufacture a desired sound to use along side [or to make sound similar to] our familiar instruments is another. IMO It is essential in maintaining our culture, keep our music from getting stagnant and not letting it get lost within others. (by Arteom)

Indeed: Fascinating music from a country most of us did not know very well.

Arto's music moves me every time May 24, 2007

Arto is the most thought provoking and heart felt musician to come around since Nana Vasconcelos from Brazil. His music is so beautiful. Each song on this album stands on its own as a tiny masterpiece. The instrumentation is rich with harmonies, melodies, and unusual rhythms that steer away from the west and lean towards the east. If you want to listen to something refreshing, honest, beautiful, inspiring, and just different in every way, then buy any of Arto's solo albums or any of his with his Armenian Navy Band. I am considering a trip to Yerevan, Armenia if these guys never make it back to the states. I have got to see these people live. Check out youtube for Arto's solo with a frame drum and a coke bottle filled with water. It will change your view of music and you'll rethink the canned corporate music you are about to put on! Trust me and better yet....trust Arto! Cheers friends of good music.
