That is exactly what happened with RapidGrab. At first you could use it to download from RapidShare with impunity, but now, they implemented registration where you need to be a part of their select group of website using RapidGrab or something now.

edit: Just discovered DivShare (http://www.divshare.com). Sounds really nice ("Upload your videos, photos and other files, and we’ll host them forever, for free.").Plus, very little ad and wait time. 😉

I advise people who upload to these sites (also, MediaFire is faster to download from) to make an encrypted archive of songs, title it with something inconspicuous, and upload it while posting the password (and hopefully those sites don’t read the forums since they can track back where the hits are coming from).

If you’re uploading to MediaFire which doesn’t allow encrypted archives, and if the filesize of the archive is larger than say 95MB, then add it to another archive and split the archives into 95MB pieces, since most of the time the final size would be increased from 95MB to around 100MB, which is the filesize limit of what you can upload to MediaFire. Then you can upload all the archives fine while the content is encrypted.

Coding the links is necessary to prevent the hosting sites to see the referrer, which is snesorama.us. if they see the referrer, they will check back and see the copyrighted material on their server. and will delete the files. Don’t let it happen to you.

Filehosting sites can see whats in an encrypted RAR file so make sure you check the box to encrypt the contents aswell. So then even double-clicking the RAR file to view the contents will require a password.

You’re probably registered. That happens to me as well. With the toolbar you get premium download during happy hours.

But on to what I originally wanted to post. I’m using megaupload for my files at the moment, but really want to change upload sites. Does Filefactory have a longer upload period than megaupload? I honestly can’t deal with re-uploading a file into megaupload every three months that get neglected by users in any site I post them up. That’s truely a hassle to me.

for large files megashares is pretty awesome…10gb single file uploads! but 15 day non-download retention…and it would probably take like a year to up a 10 gig file anyways

MU & MediaFire (for archive smaller than 100mo) are the best combo that i used till now.

otherwise i know that some people can’t unfortunately access to some free hosters. sad thing…

MediaFire is almost perfect, but it can only take files less than 100MB.
GigaSize can take up to 600MB per file if you register for a free account, but only stores files for 45 days.
Filedropper has 5GB per file limit, so you can post huge files, and it’s pretty cheap to make an account, but overall it’s problematic.

So overall, I’d go with MediaFire. Then again, Megaupload’s 45 second wait can be ignored with certain methods. Some Firefox plugins can remove the wait from sites like Rapidshare, Megaupload, etc. Illimitux is probably the better of some of the others. SkipScreen has a habit of sometimes breaking links. But that still doesn’t stop Megaupload from removing files.

Just because YOU have problems with the site, it doesn’t mean that everyone else does.

4shared.com is another alternative

Its a cool site, if you are a registered user (its free), you can upload up to 1gb, you can mannage your archives in galleries, good download speed, and the best, No Waiting Time 4 Downloads.
It’s pretty new, but its a good one, it works very fine for me, you can give it a try.

Everyone should be using the MegaUpload Time Attack (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11704) Firefox extension. It enlarges the captcha so it’s easy to read and it automatically starts the download after entering captcha. There’s no need to click anything.

RS supports 200mb ups not 100mb.

I’ve never had problems with FileFactory or Media Fire, Filedropper randomly breaks links though… very frustrating at times.

Megaupload is THE BEST host to use these days. They have no speed limit on their files, they actually last LONGER than RapidShare these days (the links,) you can use jDownloader with it, and you can download up to 6 files back to back (one at a time though) per every 10 minutes… You cannot beat that.

If you will post some copyrighted material in it’s original name, it will get deleted everywhere by the time. The prevention is pretty easy, but 90% are not doing it and then they are angry that their files got deleted and uploading them each week like crazy.

Seriously. Perfect for uploading music files to. No passwords, or download waits. You can also set the files to direct links. I don’t see why no one else uses it here.

As a side note; I just downloaded some soundtracks from MediaFire, and they seemed to provide quick downloads, with no waits. What are the restrictions for hosting there?

Max upload size is 200mb, but I find anything 180mb and over is usually corrupted without fail and anything around 150ish up to 180 also has a good chance of coming out corrupt. I usually try to make parts of files 100-120 or less (preferably less) and I find most times anything 80mb or less usually never come out corrupt. The good side is infinite parallel downloads.

Well, I did a little digging through divShare’s subscription fees when I noticed people were saying that they were PAYING for premium accounts on file sharing sites such as MegaUpload (reference the MegaUpload Shutdown thread). So I’ve come up with divShare’s rates. They are starting out free accounts with 20gb storage/unlimited bandwidth. If you upgrade at 39.99/yr you receive 100gb storage with unlimited bandwidth. The Professional Account is not even worth mentioning because the rates for that are ridiculously expensive, though for a personal account at just over $3 a month, it’s cheaper than running a website with a hosting plan.

At this point in time, if you were intending on paying for a premium membership, divShare might be your best bet.

Once again, you are given a 2gb upload limit, and files stay online forever.

I disagree. In fact it’s more useful now more than ever as this thread has a huge list of alternative upload sites that no other thread had. Course, I wouldn’t complain if a huge master list was created to encompass all of the suggested sites and their benefits.

Perhaps a name change might be in order?

I’m surprised no one has already mentioned this as a viable alternative to any upload site, but I shall be the first. Buy a domain for $10, get a hosting plan with a nice package that gives you a decent amount of bandwidth and plenty of server space for $10 to $30 a month. Depending on your needs, you can generally find some pretty good deals. Sarah’s costs are inflated because she created a community that drew so much bandwidth that it forced her to expand. With a community that shares their own hosting, dedicated hosting would not be a problem, especially if you were going to exclusively use it for download links.

There are plenty of services to choose from, namely goDaddy, Host Monster, or Just Host. You can usually find something that’ll fit your needs.
