A few Megadrive’s and modifications later, I’ve settled on a VA4, with a video bypass, and more importantly a Mega Mini audio amp! This audio modification basically lifts the shackles on already the best MD MK1 sound possible, so that means the obnoxious Low Pass Filter that plagues all audio and crushes out high frequency sound on standard MD’s, is no longer there as it was, so you’ll still get crunching bass, but also all singing top end, it sounds fantastic, especially all the percussion that now stands out, it’s the best you’ll ever hear, even the Mega SG cannot match it, Streets of Rage 2 with this config has completely blown me away.
To the point of this post, I’ve started to record 100% perfect audio captures of Megadrive/Genesis games through the line out, from the Mega Mini amp, at 96000hz 24bit 3500 bitrate FLAC, sounds identical to the hardware natively, plus the tracks are nicely edited, including a named tracklist.
I started out just making the soundtracks for me, but thought others might be interested, so thought I’d put it out there, and see if that’s the case, I’m going to be putting up new game tracks fairly regularly on here, so keep an eye out! And put some recommendations here also, I’ll see what I can do.
The Genesis has awesome sound, so let’s get it out there 🙂

Yes mate, I’ll add them to my list.

I’d love to see how would it sound from your ripping.
Ofc, main Sonics pretty plz? 😛
I haven’t dug up much into looking for good sound of MD music, aside from http://16bap.theclassicgamer.net/, which may be a good source for good titles. But they really seem to look good.
Thank you very much for sharing these.

That’s the trouble, there isn’t much at all, and unfortunately YouTube only has a 128 bit rate aac, these have a 3500 bit rate flac, night and day, plus with the internal amplifier, takes it way beyond.
Sonics are on the list! 🙂
Again, thanks mate 🙂

I can’t stand the harsh sound of the Megadrive 2…
But okay, I give you the benefit of the doubt, and I’ll try your rips. But I highly doubt they sound as pleasant as "16-bit audiophile".

Ok man, will do.
Cheers for the feedback, I’ve checked the tracks you’ve said, can’t make it out on those, but have picked it up on some others, it’s analogue noise, and you will get it as it’s from native hardware, but there are things I can do to mitigate it, without resorting to noise reduction, which will ruin the sound, but I will adjust the input volume, that’ll help, but it’s only noticeable in specific circumstances, together with high volume from the playback device, my next after Gynoug, will reflect it mate.
———- Post added at 02:29 AM ———- Previous post was at 02:28 AM ———-
Gynoug added! 🙂
I’ll put them on the list 🙂
I’ve made some small changes to the mastering, going forward, may result in a slightly lower output, same quality, but just trying to mitigate any analogue interference, that may pop up occasionally, without resorting to any DNR, don’t want to compromise the base quality.
I am guessing you’re using a Flashcart ?
If there is Space for one more Request, then i’d have to ask for Home Alone.
It’s impossible to even find a .vgm File to listen to it with vgmstream and make my own Copy.
Damn Shame too, it has a rocking Soundtrack, i loved that Game as a Kid.

Go Straight doesn’t actually loop at the 1:30 mark. The track itself is in actuality at least 3 minutes long, as there IS a difference in the music at the 2 minute mark, which you can hear both in-game and the game’s sound test as well. Simply compare the :30 second mark to the 2:00 minute mark in this video (or take another listen to the in-game sound test):
www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5g-QHq925o
If it’s not too much trouble, it would be greatly appreciated if you could update the track!

There seems to be some kind of noise, in most soundtracks (or at least sonic and streets of rage ones) it starts like 0.1-0.2 secs or so earlier than the actual music, some soundwaves, I noticed them when comparing sonic1, very noticeable in the first 4 seconds of Spring Yard Zone, or Star Light Zone compared to the official release (https://vgmdb.net/album/26814 I’m not really sure if that is what is adding the feeling of stereoish, or more like not being in some closed place, dunno how to explain).

Hi mate, I’ve just checked, the new 3:23 long version, is exactly the same as the link you sent, except mine is a bit longer, past 1:30 the beat kicks in on the second intro loop, for another 1:50 past that, you sure you got the new one?

I’ve removed it, will have a look and do it again, not sure why.
Your 3:23 version is not the same as the in-game sound test/official soundtrack/vinyl or the video I linked to, I believe I may not be doing a good job at explaining what the issue is. Your rip is simply the first 90 seconds looped twice, which is not how the game actually plays the track. In-game, the first 90 seconds of Go Straight play one single time, with the following 90 seconds of the track looping and having a different tune from the first.
Please compare your second loop from 2:03-2:34 to the following video’s second loop of Go Straight from 6:16-6:47 (the official SoR2 vinyl, which sounds exactly as it does in-game) and you can hear the difference in the tune, please use headphones if possible:
I would really appreciate it if someone else were to compare the two as well, as to help me explain what I’m getting at better.

I was gonna record it originally from the in game sound test, but I thought the link you sent me from YouTube, was the full version.
I’ll do it from the game itself, and not a VGM, lol hopefully it will have the full length cut :0

Oh, I thought you were ripping the audio straight from the cartridge! LOL The SoR2 vgm’s available over on project2612 are crap and they never bothered to correct the error, leaving those of us who wanted the real thing in VGM to do it ourselves. I actually went ahead and slapped together a comparison sound file for you to hear the difference easily now, so that you wouldn’t have to deal with youtube videos. haha

Something I noticed as well is that your music plays at a slower rate? Was it playing in PAL/50hz instead of NTSC/60hz?
As much as I love Dancing Bunny Girls (Stage 2) looped 3 TIMES, come on! Magical Sea (Stage 3) deserves to loop twice in its entirety XD

Haha, I mostly use cartridge, but some are VGM, same audio quality through an actual MD, but like you said, some of the cutting/looping is off, I’ve abandoned a few because of that.
I’m fine with doing it again, like I said it has to be right, and I do shoot for 60hz ntsc, not to say any Pal hasn’t made it in, normally it’s really noticeable if it’s 50hz, and I’ll change it if it’s slo mo sound.
As much as I love Dancing Bunny Girls (Stage 2) looped 3 TIMES, come on! Magical Sea (Stage 3) deserves to loop twice in its entirety XD
I noticed the same thing with Magical Forest (Stage 1): the 2nd loop ends MUCH BEFORE the track goes for the 3rd one. Also… at 0:13 to 0:18, 0:38 to 0:44 and other parts where a flute-like instrument plays it seems the sound "bursts or clicks".
Listen for yourself to understand what I meant.

Oh and you guys are getting spoiled tonight, The Super Shinobi II is up 🙂
May I please request HELLFIRE. This game’s OST has a great crunchy use of the MD synth – I bet it’s amazing via Mega Amp
Yeah, right?
First time I stumbled upon it, I was surprised to see Hayato Matsuo as composer but also Hitoshi Sakamoto as programmer/arranger of the MD version.
One of the track that marked me: "Into the Deep Blue Sky". Could listen to it looped for hours =’D
The MD was a little goldmine of goodness, even more when big composers (Sakuraba, Iwadare, …) weren’t always credited for their own participation.
Anyway, thanks for the quick releases.
As a note, after listening a bit and comparing with multiple soundtrack sources, it seems that your recordings are slower than originally intended.
Are you using a PAL version of the Mega Drive? Because it sounds like just the amount of slowdown you would find between NTSC and PAL.
Though, the pitch seems a bit lower too, so I find it weird… Just curious.
You also seem to be missing some tracks from time to time, depending on the game.
I Guess it depends on the state of the soundtests menu available to you?
Just my 2 cents >=3

It’s because some of the games I have used VGM sound files, and it doesn’t state region, so could be accidentally PAL, I’m making an effort to use in game sound tests for as many games as possible so I know they are definitely 60hz, same thing will account as to why any tracks may be missing.

Nope, just listened to Go Straight directly from your Google Drive and it’s still the incorrect project2612 vgm looped twice.
I’m sure I did it again from the sound test, I’ll have a look.
