R.I.P.
He will be remembered in our hearts….
Posted 2 hours ago. Both this one and the other should be locked. His death is already plastered all over the Internet (IF it’s even him)
It’s even more wierd that I’ve been listening to a lot of his score’s very recently and I rarely listen to more than just one of his on any given month.
…and a part of mine 🙁 R.I.P. James
.
you left us far too soon 🙁
R.I.P., James Horner.
Thanks for the music. It will move us, delight us, and live forever.
His music has seen me through some god awful times and brought me through the other side and it’s hard to articulate to non-score listeners just much I’m gonna miss him.
Not quite. The incomparable Ennio Morricone can still be counted amongst the living and still working.
yes, but we all know Ennio is immortal, or thats what im going to pretend
field of dreams was one of the first scores i had, one of the first that made me realize there is score music.
He has left us, his fans, a legacy of amazing scores.
James Horner Memorial Thread (Thread 190920)
I always took comfort in the fact that Horner would still be working after Williams was gone…
Capt
Thank you Mr. Horner for so many amazing scores – your musical voice will be missed.
It is unbelievable … Only 61 years old …
My condolences to the Family … The world has lost once again this year a great composer.
R.I.P Grandmaster … Today is a very sad day 🙁
So many great scores he did, Star Trek II & III, Titanic, The Perfect Storm, Avatar, An American Tail,
The Land Before Time, Casper, Apollo 13, Braveheart & the list go on.
R.I.P. James 🙁
Thanks for all the great music Jim!
Capt
Thank you for your music and talent, James. It shall be missed.
My personal recollection. (Only of the movies I saw and remember. Or scores that left an impression – without the movie.)
1980s.
I still remember being one of only four guys watching Battle Beyond the Stars in our small cinema in 1980! They didn’t even show that film for a whole week – only for five days. But I enjoyed it a lot, even getting the lp some years later (for quite a price). Still like that movie and its score to this very day.
Wolfen was my next encounter with Horner and this score already contains a lot of the elements he was going to use and re-use again and again. Great movie, great score (Safan’s rejected one is also interesting).
(Deadly Blessing is very much inspired by Goldsmith’s Omen. Not bad, but also not really sure what to make of this as I haven’t seen the movie.)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Hit… me… like… a… ton… of… bricks. Awesome movie with one of Horner’s best scores.
48 Hrs. Another movie I still very much enjoy. The music is hit and miss for me.
Something Wicked This Way Comes… I like the book more and the music never left an impression.
Krull. There’s a better score than Wrath of Khan and it’s this! The movie itself is kinda cheap and kinda nice. Some great actors and faces doing a B-movie with a C-movie story. And an A-class score.
Brainstorm. Wow. I saw this in projected in 70mm and it really impressed me. While the story itself is not that great, the imagery is fantastic. And the score is great too.
Gorky Park. The first of the "Russian" scores and it works very nicely in the movie. Not so much outside.
Uncommon Valor. One of my favourite war movies with a great score! With some Aliens-themes before Aliens. 😉
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. While the movie itself is most certainly not as great as II, it’s not such a dated disappointment (to me) as IV. The music is fine, too bad it took so long to release a longer version of it.
Cocoon. Ah, Horner goes jazz. Actually a pretty darn good score!
Commando. Hell yeah! Nice action/war score! Another one that should have been released in that very same year. But in 1985 they wanted to sell more pop shit on discs and not scores…
Aliens. Perfect entertainment. While I consider Krull to be my "holy Horner grail" of the 1980s, to some it’s this score. A friend of mine recorded me Alien (by Goldsmith) and Aliens on the both sides of a tape and I loved this tape until I got the record(s)!
The Name of the Rose. I saw that in the cinema too and the music works and that’s about it. Good movie though!
An American Tail. Another great movie and score! I wasn’t so much in the songs back then (still not when it comes to most of Disney’s fares).
Project X. Everybody wanted this score (like Vibes) and I never figured out why.
*batteries not included. Ah, more Horner goes jazz! Very nice listen and a sweet (and very forgettable) movie for the kids.
Willow. Horner goes Star Wars. Bombastic and great, but somewhat tiring after a while. Yep, it’s not Krull.
Red Heat. More Horner in Russia. Another very dated movie and another score that works better in the movie than all by itself. Not too bad though.
Vibes. See Project X. Money wasted on a rather bland score from a very pointless film.
The Land Before Time. Nice! Horner’s dinosaurs is a great listen and the film still works nicely for children.
Cocoon: The Return. And more Horner jazz. You only need to buy one of the three to get the experience (and save money).
Field of Dreams. Well, I forgot the score and the movie. Pretty quickly.
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Steal from the best, in this case Danny Elfman. These two should have collaborated instead, which could have resulted in a more genuine score. Still, not too bad for once. And the movie is fun too.
Glory. Great! But, deary me, what a SHITTY original release this score got! Fortunately, this has been fixed in recent years. The film is not bad, though rather forgettable.
1990s.
Another 48 Hrs. The score, like the movie itself, is pretty much a proper continuation and sequel. Not a classic though.
The Rocketeer. Another one to have. Most certainly one of the finest action scores ever. There’s already some repetition going on in Horner’s work, but this is still mostly genuine and great. Nice movie too.
An American Tail: Fievel Goes West. Pretty much the same as for Another 48 hours. A solid effort.
Sneakers. Oh, yeah. The fans of Horner hated the GUTS out of this one! Pretty much the same happened to Goldsmith with Warlock. But this is actually a very nice and sweet piece of music. For a good, but forgettable movie.
(Swing Kids. Haven’t seen the movie, but a score which is split in two and basically falls into popular swing music of the era and some good film music without any swing going on. Best to listen to each part all by itself.)
The Pagemaster. Oh, how I wanted to love this music after the first few tracks! But it doesn’t keep up the class for long and gets somewhat boring. The very same goes for the movie btw.
Braveheart. Did not touch me. Sorry.
Casper. While really not a bad score (and movie), this feels quite repetetive of Horner’s work in many places. Better wait for Jumanji…
Apollo 13. Great! Another genuine classic! Really love this one.
Jumanji. A very solid effort for childrens fare. The movie… you may like it and I don’t.
Titanic. One of the most successful scores of all time. Does this say enough? Actually, not really. I don’t like the movie and the score goes on forever. Besides, they played it too often. Not the best place to start collecting Horner. Though many did.
Deep Impact. One more end-of-the-world-film of the era. The score is kinda nice, but forgettable. And I got sleepy and missed half of the film in the cinema.
The Mask of Zorro. Nice! Very spanish and actiony. You must be in the mood and it will entertain you nicely. Not a classic though.
Mighty Joe Young. Forgettable. Mostly.
2000s.
The Perfect Storm. Excellent! Not to be underestimated! One of the best scores of Horner period.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Oh, so guilty a pleasure! I love and I hate this movie to death! And I’m not the Nostalgia Critic btw. Yeah, this one has some nice music going on. Especially if you skip the songs…
Enemy at the Gates. More Russian Horner. Solid effort.
Troy. Gabriel Yared composed a score for another film. And Wolfgang Petersen realised it. Sorry, but Troy simply didn’t DESERVE Yared’s superior effort. Horner’s effort, on the other hand, fits nicely and is excellent if you consider the minimum amount of time he had at his disposal! Do not forget this, no matter how much repetition etc. is going on! This is not Hans Zimmer.
The Legend of Zorro. Ay caramba! More Spanish fire. Solid sequel all along. The music of the first one was better.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. One title before Avatar and worth a serious note. Watch the movie and give this music a spin.
Avatar. "Titanic – in space – Reloaded". Na, actually it’s Pocahontas meets Dances with Wolves in the Aliens-universe. Na, it’s James Cameron’s Star Wars. No more, no less. (Watch Plinkett’s review!) The score… while Titanic’s was played to death (until Lord of the Rings came along), this one sure as hell wasn’t. I’d love to call this great, it sure works nicely in the movie. But it’s not the great creative effort. Actually, I hadn’t expected that. There’s simply too much OLD Horner going on in this score and here there’s no excuse this time like with Troy. Solid, yeah, great too sometimes, but IMO not a master piece.
2010s.
I haven’t seen any of those last movies. The Spider-Man reboot (as well as The Karate Kid) didn’t make any sense to me and (according to many fans and critics) it’s a pointless movie in many respects.
Maybe I will give the last nine scores a listen to… later.
R.I.P. James, it was a nice ride.
Adis James Horner! 🙁 🙁 🙁
Horner, the irreplaceable master! Horner forever!

You will be missed James RIP

So, AVATAR 2 has been done?
The Rocketeer and The Flying Horsemen deserve a separate mention since they intertwined with his other passion – Aviation. The liberating feeling of adventure, the weight of lightness was so evident in those scores, it was clear that aviation brought out the best in him. And he died doing what he loved. What a noble death!
R.I.P Mr. Horner. Hope you have a blast with Jerry, Elmer and other giants up there.
Enjoy your life after life, JH … and whenever comes next.
RIP old boy
Rest In Peace, maestro. :((((((((
