My wonky rip.

I saw a 2013 restoration of this silent film. The newly found footage allowed for using nearly the complete score discovered after the composer’s death. Nina Goslar, Frank Strobel, and many more, who also worked on the reconstruction of the Metropolis and Die Nibelungen scores by Gottfried Huppertz, worked on that project. They discussed whether or not to keep the "Salonorchester" ensemble size used for the previous found cut of the film. Eventually, they agreed to use a bigger orchestra than before. Some audiences familiar with the recordings with small orchestra ("Salonorchester") found the new bigger sound ‘annoying’ and ‘too much Hollywood film music like’. Since the new recording is only available on DVD, I’ve looked for the older recordings…here’s one.

*Interestingly, Hindemith scored it to be played either by the full orchestra (around 25 musicians) or by two musicians. One violin and a piano could actually play the whole score, for use in small towns where the budget wouldn’t permit full orchestra. In our recording we expanded the string sections, allowing more colors and sonorities, but in several places that I felt were particularly solistic in character, I scored it for solo players. This kind of contrast was not possible in the original score, but we all felt that it was very much in the Hindemith idiom.
