They could easily do a prequel for this game, with Laguna, Kiros and Ward as the main characters. It can start off early as them as Galbadia soldiers, maybe meeting up for a mission for the first time together. Obviously all the scenes that are in the game will happen again, and maybe they can reference this mid-game. The game ends when they shoot Sorceress Adel into space, they find Ellone and Laguna is made president.
So that would make Sorceress Adel the final boss. The thing is, Sorceress Adel is seen as this REALLY evil sorceress, a vicious bitch that has no heart and kills for fun. Yet you barely see this in FF8, because she is only in the game briefly, and only has one flash back in the game. They can really build on her character.
Another thing is Raine. We don’t see enough Laguna/Raine scenes. We know they fall in love in the end, but how did it get to that point? The only section of the game that Raine is in, she hides her feelings from Laguna (he listens in but regardless) and then that’s it.
They can expand on Julia/General Caraway too. And if they wish, the potential link between Squall and Laguna being related. There’s a lot they can do.
So, what are your thoughts? The battle system will probably change, just do a simple level up system with GFs I’d say. I think it’d be interesting, and with Laguna appearing in Dissidia, maybe interest in his character will expand a bit in the mainstream, and a surge may occur for something like this to happen. I’d be open to it. 🙂
It’s not just a NO, it’s a OH HELL NO!! None of the FF games need or require any prequels or sequels. Sakaguchi kept the lid on SE’s mass marketing or w/e you want to call it. Was only AFTER he left, his vision was distorted into what it is now.
I’m not trying to flame you or anything JohnnyMercyside, just the thought of anymore prequel/sequels fills me with dread and loathing.
Maybe as some kind of squad/solo based TPS/A – but not a turn based RPG.
the only way I would accept a prequel or sequel is if the original team of said game was working on it. i assume that is next to impossible so…..meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eh
I wouldn’t really say a prequel, but a game based on Laguna’s story would be accepted. Kinda like how Crisis Core had Zack as the main character and told his story except this would revolve around Laguna and co.
And if it goes deeper in the nature of the Sorcery & the Sorceress themselves.
Exploring more of the flavor.
VIII has a nice setting, although the Gunblades are as ridiculous as the Keyblades.
If I could see a prequel of any game made it would be FFVIII.
And yet, I wouldn’t want to see the prequel made. My issue with prequels and sequels has to do with the fact that there are other things that make us love the characters, story and the worlds of these games that cannot really be extracted from the original game and moved to another. Subtle things like what FFVIII does with time: the theme of the inconsolable loss that comes with the passing of time is inextricably tied to the characters, world and narrative, (particularly, I think, to Laguna and co.) of FFVIII. If we take them out of the frame that gives them life…
Still, I like your approach. If I could get more of any character in Final Fantasy-dom it would be Laguna.
