4, Origins, and Homecoming, in due time 😉

Scared the piss out of me back in the day.

The rest don’t interest me.

Origins on the other hand disappointed me. It was too short, too boring, and the system needs something refreshing injected into it or I may fail to show interest toward an upcoming instalment.

I think Origins is probably the weakest for scare/survival factor because it allows you to arm yourself with a larger variety of weapons both melee and missile. Can’t be too scared when you can just punch the crap out of something. Or bean it with a TV. In that respect it functions more like a battle royale version of SH. While I enjoy grinding monsters into the pavement this kind of dominance seems out of place in a survival horror game.

SH4, I thought, handled the survival aspect quite well since you simply can’t stop ghosts for good unless you have special items, which are strictly limited in numbers, so there is always a credible threat roaming around. The story has almost nothing to do with the core SH plot sans a few referential locations, but still creepy.

I know almost nothing about SH Homecoming besides the inclusion of a rich physics engine, but hopefully it won’t be as weak as Origins.

…that fateful viewing of James and Mary’s video. The revelation that James killed Mary flips the script, in just as big a way as Vincent saying "they look like monsters, to you?"in 3. It changes everything.

Still, I love revisiting locations, and find the majority of my joy with the series in them. That being said, What say we talk about our favorite environments/locations?

1: The School–easily has my favorite transistion to the hell/nightmare side of SH that I’ve seen so far. Going through the clocktower. *sigh* The piano puzzle is probably my favorite in the game (Not saying it was the most difficult). Plus, I honestly feel like this installment focused too much on outside environments. A "problem" that was phased out pretty nicely, imo :p

2.: Lakeside Hotel–The transistions and hell sides were the weakest in 2, to me. But, the hotel was sprawling and delightful, nonetheless. It houses the moment discussed in the above spoiler, and a favorite (if overused) mechanic of mine: abandoning your inventory for a stretch of gameplay.

The story in Silent Hill 2 is very memorable, and people who don’t even play videogames much admit to playing Silent Hill 2.

I never play Silent Hill 4: The Room. The concept just didn’t interest me enough. Maybe I’ll play it some day.

Agreed, the school is one of the best locations ever in any SH.

SH2’s underground area (maybe under Toluca Lake, can’t remember the name) was pretty freaky. Invisible prisoner and whatnot.

SH3, I loved the freaking shopping mall, ironically since I don’t like visiting malls at all for reals. Something about an empty mall and that droning song that accompanies it screams something like teenage wasteland. Without a doubt my favourite area.

SH4? The apartment. Why not.
The hauntings are pretty creepy sure, but what genuinely freaks me out is crucified Walter in his secret room. It’s totally got that haunted house feel. A close second is the hospital with its corridor of 22 randomly placed rooms.

SH0 had the theatre going for it. I enjoyed the concept of placing the mirror on stage. Even though it takes you to pretty different versions of SH, they all manage to be creepy.

But yeah, great game, replaying the game, and I love having the Chainsaw. Also, how many people here loved using the Great Knife? I did 😀

Also, I actually caught the Silent Hill film.. compared to most video game movies, it was pretty good.. as a movie alone… yeah… not the best, the film didn’t adapt well, but the scenes with Pyramid Head were fucking awesome.

Still wish James got a Katana, anyway ;_;;

I rewatched the movie, and after having played 2, I’m a little up in the air about how I feel about (a) Pyramid Head being in the movie. I’ve read enough stuff to suggest that they are linked to the town (as evidenced by their appearance in the paintings in the Historical Society, and on the glyph on the noose podium in the prison).

However, their appearance there could easily enough be chalked up to that version of SH being built of James’s perceptions. So, should I be upset that they used something unique to James in a movie that for all intents and purposes is refashioned heavily from the original game?

Nah. It’s good service to the fans who were probably expecting to see him make an appearance. I think it was a decent thing to do since they couldn’t really throw in too many overt references without alienating the mainstream audience. As far as iffy decisions go, I was far more annoyed with the decision to replace Harry’s role with a general mother figure…too friggin predictable. Still a good adaptation overall though.

I unlocked the unlimited submachine gun and the flamethrower. Honestly don’t know how I got the flamethrower, I meleed almost every enemy, as per usual o_O

But, SH2 (DC or regular) is just the best for me.
1 just for being my first "scary" game
3 is just kind of fun
0 was a quick little romp

and 4…well 4 is like "Super Mario Bros. 2 (US Version)" it’s not a BAD game per say, but it’s not a GOOD Silent Hill game either.
And, it was NOT worth full price….

I really liked the second one, being in Silent Hill, outside, but not being in town? SWOON.

I caved and started replaying it despite my copy of Spore arriving. Why do I order new games like I’ll actually get to play them?

I noticed something interesting in that dogs don’t really attack you if you’re walking! Is it like that in any of the others? It’s not something that would usually be an issue for me as I have a fetish for bashing things over the head with pipes. :]

This conclusion is certainly in line with my earlier claim that I appreciate the games for atmosphere and environments. Hard puzzle level doesn’t bother me a bit, if you were wondering.

So, my fellow SH protagonists (^_^), have you ever tried and/or achieved a 10-star run on any of the games?

I got 8+ stars on 3 today, without even trying. The scary part is if I didn’t use the unlimited machine gun, it would have been 9+.

The only things I would have had to have done is finished it on Hard, and saved a couple times less. Crazy.

That’s pretty epic…think my max is about 5 stars.

Nope. Not a fan of trying either. I am also a huge fan of lingering (makes me think of that old song by The Cranberries) and general time-wasting exploration. If I happen to get a good rating while I stop to bash everything in the area, good for me, but it’s never a priority. Doing it this way, I believe I’ve achieved a max run of 7-8 stars, but it’s been so long I might just be stroking my ego.

I’ll be doing a 2 run this weekend, and probably working on 4. Still want to get that katana for Harry, though. We’ll see how things shake out.

I think that’s the amount I got on my first run of SH2. Mostly because I killed ALOT of bastard, and died less then ten times throughout the course of the game. Plus, I made a joke challenge to myself that "once i get the great knife, it’ll be the only weapon I use from now one." It actually worked, one hit kills rule, and Eddie sure as shit didn’t expect it. But yeah, slowed me down a bit, so I decided not to use it for much longer.

I really started appreciating 4 when I was working through the building world and especially the apartment world. Something appropriate about Frank owning an apartment complex. When I found the keys I was like OH GOD YES. I get to be a voyuer in everyone’s apartments 🙂 I love that they gave each a theme and a character(s). Definitely an improvement over Wood Side/Blue Creek.

I’m still with the game off and on, among other games but I’m trying to play sans firearms, which I usually do for 90% of the game until a dog really annoys me. It always bugged me that I never used a golf club. So far, I just made it past the 22 random rooms in the hospital. Freaky stuff. I’ll put my spoilers on hold if you haven’t yet arrived, Neg.

Still, I was bit pretty hard by 4 yesterday and I’m really glad (even if some of the story details are a little foggy). Deeper connections to 2 are certainly selling points for me, as noted above 😉 Oh man, and

I have a hard time finding out where to put Holy Candles to actually let them do their magic. I’ve got two hauntings right now that I’m just leaving alone. One’s in the bedroom and I can just automatically jet out the door without taking damage. The other is a lovely wall of babies over my box. I can open it from the hallway side, so no need to get rid of it, I guess.

Let me know if hauntings will ever take over the WHOLE apartment if left unchecked.

Oh, and you can move the load images (that little dude and the mark of Samael) with the analog stick~

Yeah, at some point if you do not take care of the hauntings, they will completely over run the apartment. At that point, there will be very little room to move around without taking any damage.

ari, I’m not too sure the boss is vulnerable all the time (depending on who we’re talking about) but, yeah I never manage to end it with all the bullets in my inventory and I’m a basher who saves EVERYTHING. Then again, I’ve never gone in pure combat i.e. with bullets/guns taking up all my slots. Mainly cos you can’t pistol whip.

Hi guys! Just got a quick (tech) question for SH Homecoming. Did any of you had any "problems" with loading game saves? Without spoiling anything, at a certain point, I picked up a few items for a puzzle and when I loaded my save the next day, the item had "vanished" from my item stock….and when I went back to where I picked it up, the item was NOT there seeing as I picked it up previous to saving. So I had to start over :@…..anyone else had other problems like that?? :\……thanks and SH rocks :D……

Have to report that it was an all melee game. Nary a single bullet fired.

Have to recommend the plot analysis by Silent Pyramid at GameFaqs. Two hours of reading it had everything making perfect sense, as opposed to the game by itself 😮 😮 😮

Accordingly, the rewrite I came up with after I played it for the first time:

Doomjockey already said it in this thread, 4 embodies the survival aspect moreso than the first 3. You can’t put down ghosts permanently for the most part (yes, there are the 5 swords of obedience), so it makes the game much more nerve wracking and challenging, even on easy.

When I play 1-3, I end up with dozens of health drinks and tens of med kits. In 4, it feels like every single one counts after the apartment stops healing you.

I have now ^___^ Pretty simple really, Frank and others thought that Mike was her boyfriend, when in actuality it’s the artist in 202.

Richard bumped into Mike in the hall, dragged him into his apartment, stripped him naked and beat him. Walter (and the gamer) thought that he really skinned him (hence the name on the tape and Walter killing him via electricution), when he actually just took his best clothes. The drunk took the shirt ("I’ll keep this one for myself") and the cat lady took the jeans to wrap her dead cat in.

Do any of you guys actually equip any of her weapons?

I think the reason 1 feels scarier is the cruder graphics. The harder it is to make something out, the scarier it is. Not to mention 1 had allot of disorienting and grotesque indoor areas.

Of course, critics always tend to be more harsher with just about anything these days.

Doom 64? I swear, I dunno how people decide what’s survival horror these days.

I also dunno how prepared those games make you for SH. SH is classic survival horror so expect finite bullets, more retreat, and more puzzles.

That said, it adheres very closely to staples of SH goodness (like psychological terror for poor Travis) so I think it was well worth the playthru.

Sadly, no. The only system I own that SH is available on is the 360.

What I want to know is, should I even bother with Homecoming? I’ve heard mixed reviews about, so I don’t want to waste my money for a game that isn’t up to SH standards. The scarier the better 🙂

I figure I can get Butcher and Sharpshooter on the same runthrough, and then Cartographer, Daredevil, and Sprinter on another.

Missed Sprinter by 7 minutes because I got lost in the hotel, mainly because my second runthrough ended early because I got the UFO ending.

I’m also a big fan of the games’ music by Yamaoka who I find to be a musical genius. The fact that his favorite SH is 2 is a big reason why I enjoy it so damn much. I liked the OST for Origins as well but Homecoming wasn’t what I expected from a SH game. This is mainly because while I realize that there are going to be ambient long, droning bg music as a part of the soundtrack, I didn’t expect 99% of the music to be this way. I like previous OSTs for their song songs with singing and lyrics. All in all, if I had to recommend what SHs to play to someone, I would only recommend 1-3.

Also, I’d love to have a mod of RE4 and 5 with James and Henry in Leon and Chris’s places 😀

There’s some of it there, and we can’t direct link to faqs on Gamefaqs, so go there, select a SH game and read SilentPyramid’s Plot Analysis FAQ. It’ll take ya a couple hours, but sooo worth it.

There’s a couple tidbits about the history of the cult in 4, of course you have to find all the memos, which is easier than having Eileen read all the journal entries in the woods. Good lord, that’s what made me start beating her in the first place.

I can play 4 repeatedly, but I play SHs more than anything else, mainly because they are relatively short. So yes, more than Pokemon.

Alright, IDX, from skimming back over the FAQ, this is the short of it. Right after the civil war Jennifer Carroll was murdered by the Christians for her faith regarding the Order (the cult). Just check out her statue in Rosewater Park in 2. She lived with Nicholas who is called the doctor of god in one of the paintings in the church of SH3, iirc. So basically the idea is she gave birth to the first coming of ‘god.’

This is all really sketchy, which is why I prefer the (overtly) character driven Silent Hills more (2, 4, Origins), as opposed to those dealing with the cult in specific (1, 3; I’ll argue that 4, while about the cult, is more about that dreamboat Walter, his victims, and those lovely tenants of S. Ashfield Heights~)

I’d recommend looking for a place that sells anime/video game kinda merchandise. There’s this place close by me that sells replica’s of weapons and stuff from anime and video games. They also sell toys, soundtracks, and trading cards. If there isn’t a place like that near you, ebay works too. My friend bought the SH2 OST from there. I burned myself a copy before finding it at a shop in Kansas for $20 so I bought it for myself (along with the KHII OST and a live orchestra of FF music).

I’m not sure what you mean. The only boss I have fought is Sepulcher at the bottom of Grand Hotel. After this, Alex meets up with Wheeler and they get separated. Alex joins Elle and they escape into the sewers.

I have only played Silent Hill 1-3. SH 2 being my favorite. That game freaked me out and the story was the most memorable. 1 was also very good, but it was on the PS1 so the graphics were not great. If they ever came out with a revamped version of SH 1, that would be awesome. Maybe add some extras.

Now as for the movie, I thought it was great that the french director (whatever his name is) actually played the game and liked it so much that he made it an effort to make the movie follow the same elements as the game.

That impressed me a lot. Yes granted, movies always have their own take on a videogame series. Often it is for the worse and fans can not really appreciate what they have done. But this was not the case for me with the SH Movie.

He even incorporated the same camera shots like they did in the SH game and he had a lot of familiar characters in the movie as well. Not to mention the music was from the game.

It was perhaps one of the best translations of a videogame turned movie.

There’s actually a reinvisioning of the original coming out later this year. We’ve talked about it here (the trailer is a page back, at the top. Should be Roki’s post) and in Allen’s Konami News Thread, which is also in this forum.

I highly recommend 4 and Origins.

I have played 4, but not enough to give a full review. The concept seemed interesting though. (I think I may have played for 30 minutes at most at a friend’s house.)

Also I want to play SH: Homecoming, even though it seems like they copied Resident Evil with their lead character. I kept thinking of Leon Kennedy for some reason when I saw the character you play as for Homecoming.

What the heck is the monster that can only be seen when you have the flashlight on? It’s composed of a shadow and wearing some metal chest harness (is that what it is?)

On another side note… the controls in this game are a bit weird. I guess this is the "tank" controls. Although I’ve gotten used to it, I’m not too fond of it. In addition, Travis runs like a girl. Even Heather had more stamina than he does and she’s a freakin’ chick.

Well, w/e not getting into this conversation again. Origins controls are 2D and that’s what I prefer, because intuitive.

I don’t think I would have so much of a problem with it if the camera angles were better. Especially when you’re in a room where there are tons of monsters in it. When you switch camera angles, you have to change the direction of the pad. It’s annoying.

On the subject of the camera angle… for this game, it’s close to fail. They position you in a way you have no idea what direction a monster is coming at you.

That’s 2D controls for ya. You’re on the screen and you want to go up, so you hit up ^_^ When the camera switches you are a bit more liable to return to where you were, if it’s a quick switch, but that’s tolerable to think up, hit up, and move up!

I usually just run past the Carrion’s unless they’re in a corridor with a tight squeeze… at which point, I just use the pee-shooter sting pistol on it.

I’m usually really stingy about disposable items, but there’s tons of melee weapons in the game. So, melee away.

It did, however, get me the…Brawler accolade.

You must defeat Pyramid Head. He punishes all for the sins they have committed. And trust me, not playing those games is SINFUL! Careful, he might enter your dreams and rip your guts out again and again without being able to wake up. You will forever wonder that hellish place…SILENT HILL. The only way out is in. And who knows? You might fight the demons that torment you and you may leave as a better person. And if not, well, I’m sure you’ll know.

Are you talking about the Smog demons? If so, the handgun is the best weapon for the job. When they open their chest and their lungs are revealed, take a shot at it. Two or three bullets usually takes them out. This would be an enemy I highly suggest you not use melee weapons on considering they’re more of a pain to kill this way.

What location are you at exactly? I’m surprised you only have that much bullets left, unless you’re taking out every enemy you see with your gun. 😉

(between the Founder Mausoleums), the third one (in the Mausoleum, the tight ones), fourth one (in the street by the firetruck), and the fifth one (in the hotel)

I guess I could avoid all of them but the one in the cramped area…

Playing 1 and then 3 is a pretty good idea. Just like playing 2 and then 4.

If it wasn’t for Homecoming, SH would have a even/odd structure like RE. Well, hell RE has stuff like Code Veronica, so yes, we do have an even/odd system. Since we might actually get a 5 someday.

If an actual 5 comes out then that means you’ll have to be 4.5.

I too thought that guy was going to jump up at me. Also, if you don’t find you’re stuff, then after you reach a certain point, you won’t be able to go back and get it and have to fight the final boss hand-to-hand. Basically, with the steel pipe. I did it before and was a little pissed I didn’t get any kind of achievement for it. Like "Beat so-and-so without using any guns" or something. But hey, got the hospital ending with it :D!

I could see that kind of system being in a future Silent Hill, but there is something pretty organic to finding the weapons in this series that would be lost, if they did.

Like getting your second pipe from that tortured body. I was really hoping they’d come up with something like that for each of the weapons, w/in the compound. Oh well, no big loss, just would have been neat.

There was a EU-only Silent Hill Collection that collects I think 2-4 for PS2. Which was itself a very gimped and very LE version of the (of course) JP-only "Complete Set".

One of my friends still works at GS so I canl ask him if he heard anything similar.. I’d love to finally get a proper collected version.

I checked Gamestop’s site for the PS2 and PSP versions and it seems it doesn’t matter which version you reserve, you get the soundtrack. So, I say, take your pick doom. 😀

I’ve always been very selective about what tracks I download for any Silent Hill game. I normally only download songs I actually like rather than the whole album. With that being said, I may just download them when someone rips it and makes it available on the forums.

The first and only time I ever bought anything from Gamestop was when I bought Mega Man Anniversary Collection. Instead of giving me a sealed copy of the game, they just took the case I gave them (the one I picked up off the shelf), got the game out of a CD cover slip and placed inside the case. I was like "wth?". I inspected the disc carefully to make sure there was nothing wrong with it though. Still found that odd and somewhat cheap on their part.

I have a similiar story. I went to buy Kingdom Hearts II a day or two after it was released. I grabbed a "NEW" case and went to the clerk and told him I’d buy it. He said okay, grabbed my case, and put the disc into the case. I told him I want it new, as in never been opened. He said they don’t have any sealed copies. If you haven’t played the games, then you can’t even really grasp what you want to know about them. Only by experiencing it for yourself will you truly know what Silent Hill is all about.

I like that Silent Hill is seemingly based off of the perceptions and experiences of each person who visits it. I like it’s….function, but to explain that would be the ultimate spoiler.

I like the sustained creepiness of the environments and how they are chosen specifically for each protagonist.

That’s the short of it.

Alessa distorts the town into its nightmare form in order to punish those who brought about her death. Her mother Dahlia burned her in a ritual in order to summon/awaken Sammael. Dr. Kauffman and others were involved in the cult that wished to bring about his return. Alessa ends up being reincarnated/seperated into two forms, when a child is born after Sammael’s defeat. This child is named Cheryl and taken home by Harry, the protagonist of the first game. She is renamed Heather in order to protect her from her past/origin, but it doesn’t take long for her to end up in Silent Hill after the cult has Harry killed. She is to be the mother of a reborn god, but she takes care of that in pretty short order.

So, for Alessa, the town is a manifestation of retribution and punishment. This is made even more clear in the movie’s adaptation, imo.

For James:

Silent Hill in general, and Pyramid Head in specific are the instruments by which James punishes himself for killing his wife.

For Walter/Henry:

Silent Hill is the place where Walter was imprisoned and indoctrinated by a subset of the cult. Their beliefs laid the framework by which he attempts to achieve his ends of resurrecting/reuniting with his mother. He believes Henry’s apartment in Ashfield to be his mother and Henry is both the final victim of the ritual killing spree he engages in, as well as the one who must stop him.

Silent Hill is the origin of Walter as we come to know him, and the source of his hope for finding peace in reunion.

For Alex:

Alex is a member of one of the four founding families of Shepard’s Glen, a town neighboring Silent Hill. These founders hoped to keep evil at bay by perpetuating a heritage of sacrifice and clandestine rituals. When Alex’s father fails to be able to provide his sacrifice, the families attempt to return to Silent Hill to resurrect the old religion.

For Alex, Silent Hill represents the heritage that defines him and his opportunity to accept or reject it.

For Travis:

Silent Hill is the place where Travis’s destiny is married to that of Alessa when he ‘saves’ her from the fire Dahlia set when she sacrificed her. In addition to Travis visiting places significant to the psychological development of Alessa, Travis visits the final resting places of his parents, and (possibly, depending on the ending you are discussing) realizes that he has set up shop in Silent Hill. His business is voyeurism and murder, if you’re curious.

Silent Hill is the place of Travis’s origins as much as Alessa’s. It is where his current psyche was birthed and his victims lives end.

The rest of you guys feel free to correct/expound on these. This is just off the top of my head.

My second playthrough of Homecoming was when I noticed that the trucker was Travis. Me and a friend looked at pictures and everything. Even the type and color of his semi. I was like "Hell ya! It’s Travis!"

4 makes 2 so very mushy, now that I recall that Frank says James and Mary never came back from Silent Hill. So, does that mean that her entire illness took place in Silent Hill (via a 1408 scenario, where they THINK they got out, but never did), or perhaps that they just didn’t return to Ashfield.

I was thinking about doing locations first, obviously. If you guys are interested in this idea, I’ll work out the number so it’s a good number for a rumble. Separating misty world locations and nightmares sides, and I’m sure I can fudge if I have to by using outside locations.

If this flies and we get into other topics, I’d ask someone more familiar with the music to do the music edition. And, anyone interested in doing the work for any of the other possible editions can definitely do them.

No pressure, and if it flops eventually, it flops.

I’m guessing that Locations and Music will be the biggest editions, and we’ll have a number of smaller ones in between that we can rip off fairly fast. Some ideas I had:

We could do a tiny, tiny Protagonist rumble if more than us 5 are voting, since that’d probably be horribly biased. Could do 8 by including Eileen and Elle, since they can slide in on technicalities (they fight/solve puzzles, as opposed to a certain creature of wish-fulfillment).

Here’s the list of locations. I ended up with 62 because I was collapsing across somethings that aren’t super different, like Brookhaven and its nightmare side in 2, and Brookhaven in 3 which isn’t super different from 2 (Nightmare Brookhaven 3, on the other hand, soooo deserves its place). So, I put those back in just to fill out.

This means if you want to suggest places I’ve forgotten, you totally have the room to. We can even collapse across the Streets of Silent Hill in some cases. There’s fudging to be done to our advantage. I’d love to see smaller places get their due, even if their day in the sun is just the first round they are in, so don’t fret about including anything that strikes your fancy.

By support we mean we want you to vote.

Please, still suggest places you’d like to see in. I can swap them in no problem.

Picked up the final parts of the costume today. Got the flashlight, dog tages, and steel pipe. I actually considered picking up the axe as my prop, but I wasn’t really digging those at the hardware store, so I stuck with the pipe.

Hell, I even beat the final boss with the steel pipe because I forgot to grab the bag with my stuff in it. Since then, I have thought of a steel pipe as a great weapon in any scenerio (sp?).

I’ve always had a soft spot for sprites, and I genuinely believe they look better than 3D hi-res graphics when done well. 3D rendered games on DS look pretty bad. There’s a RPG coming out that’s supposedly a love letter to old-school fans of the genre. But, it’s got the round, generic character models used in III and IV, so I won’t touch it. Phantom Hourglass is OK in this regard, I guess.

I also wonder just what criteria companies will use in remaking games. In another generation or two, will they want to remake games that have already been remade? Seems pretty slippery slope.

So, in general, yeah I don’t like the idea of remakes and tbh it makes me somewhat glad that Shattered Memories is at least doing something new. I don’t usually want remakes, but for some reason I’ve always thought SH would benefit from a small step forward (Origins graphics), even though it goes again my views on the subject in general.

Klonoa for the Wii is a fantastic example of this.
They gave it an overall quality upgrade.
Graphic, music, translation, ect.
It was damn near perfect, even a few extras added in.

Or how about ‘Resident Evil’ for the gamecube?

The problem with most ‘remakes’ is that they really aren’t remakes, they’re piss poor ports.
And bad companies like ‘Square-Enix’, with their legion of stupid fans, have no problem exploiting the idiotic nature of said fans with lackluster port after lackluster port.

I call it the Madden (or I guess you could also call it the Dynasty Warrior) syndrome.

"Done right" is pretty rare. RE remake for GC was very faithful to the original. But this Dark Side Chronicles thing they’re on now doesn’t agree with me.

But back to SH. I give Shattered Memories some wiggle room because they are not Team Silent and couldn’t pull off the Team Silent feel. Even though I think they got close with Origins.

And I think I could understand Origins because I always have that could have done more doubt when the next major installment of a franchise is for some reason made into a handheld title.

Both of those places were fantastic. I didn’t really get the same feeling in HC’s hospital :(. I was disappointed.

Alchemilla (HC) is great for foreshadowing. It’s short, but I think it works better as the intro it is intended to be than it does in Origins. I understand that they probably don’t want to ever use it as a full level again, which is fine. Beyond introducing the back and forth aspect, it’s a pretty sterile level in Origins. Thankfully, Travis has the house fire to compliment it in that respect. Maybe I should have put Dahlia’s House/Alchemilla as the location in the rumble.

I got the UFO ending (on purpose, I know how to get what I want) so I can have the laser pistol next time. I think that’ll be my last normal playthrough. I want to clear it on hard, since I’ve pretty well figured out what I need to do in terms of combat. I had oodles of healing items, this time, the whole time.

I didn’t even know you can have auto select for items. Oh well, too late to complain.

As for playing in hard mode… I’ll just tell ya that if you use ammo a lot in a run through, you’re definitely going to have to be conservative in Hard mode since they reduce the amount of ammo… especially in the Police Station with all the Schisms.

4 for the Police Station (To take down one from the first wave, two from the second, one from the third)
3 for the Siam in the parking lot
3 for the Siam in the sewers
6 for the Siams in the church
1 for a schism in the church
10 or so handgun bullets for the Siam in front of the prison.

Is there 17 shot gun bullets in Hard Mode? Or 17 total Shotgun and Rifle bullets?

I can do the Schisms without bullets, tbh. Just takes time/care. 12 bullets.

You should be able to take out the Siams using the Axe (or Pipe/Crowbar). If you can effectively dodge/block their punches and hit their weak spot from behind, you can save your bullets.

In the Police Station, I generally ran away from the Schisms in the first encounter. What I would do is right after chopping down the barricade, I immediately run to the bathroom with the health drink. Wait for the two Schisms to enter and run past them and head to Interrogation Room, quickly grab the Health Drink there, and proceed to the small room with the two Schisms and kill them with the Shotgun. How you kill the remaining Schism from the garage is up to you though. 🙂

Very true. I remember in some game magazine (I think it was Gamepro or something) that had a poll of which game was better: SH or RE. I can’t remember who won but that pretty much started the rivalry between the two series in terms of which one can have a good story AND scare the shit out of people at the same time.

It’s weird, my gut instinct is to rebut the whole "3 being a step down from 2," but then I remember that it is way down my list from 2 and it suddenly seems like a totally idiotic notion to be existing in my head.

This is obviously part of why I didn’t want to rank them at all.

In all seriousness, I completely agree, though. I usually tend to champion things that other people dismiss or complain about, too. That certainly colors my love of 4, Origins, and Homecoming to a degree. At the same time, though, it’s straight up affection, not only the need to root on underdogs. It isn’t just a hollow, prideful, love founded IN SPITE of the crowd, it’s that placed over a genuine love.

Tis awesome.

We need to be thinking about what we want to do after locations, as well. Allen and I have said it should probably be a few smaller rumbles before another large edition. Of course that probably means the music edition, which if it’s going to be as large as locations, should probably be being planned starting now.

I had thought about letting Ari and IDX co-run it, but that’d be dependent on you guys being interested and having the time to get the work done. I’m not even sure if the music is readily available on youtube or that Blue Lagoon site that the FF guys here use.

Start thinking about that, and if you know anyone in the music forums who’d be interested, talk to them, too. Zoran was recommended by Jessie, but I haven’t seen him around 🙁

When I list the individual rounds, I’ll list everyone who has used each weapon. So, if you want to vote for the chainsaw because of how Harry wields it (which is different than how the Ashfield boys and Alex do it), that’s completely fine.

But as for Harry and James, I don’t know if just giving it to one of them would be fair because they both have it whether or not they hold it differently :/.

Also, didn’t know the spray can was an alien weapon.

I thought about the spray for a while, and while obviously it is practical to lump it into alien weaponry, it works exactly the same way that Harry’s Hyper Blaster does with increasing colors and power levels as determined by the number of stars you get for clearing consecutive games.

Also remember that the UFO ending is not in the original release of the game, it was added for the greatest hits version. I’d imagine if they had originally put it in, they probably would have tied it to unlocking the spray can.

I originally had Heather’s beams lumped into Alien Weaponry too, but I felt while they are beams, they are too tightly connected to her specifically to not be an individual entry. Beam Saber could be lumped in, I suppose.

I’m way open to input and if we do lump either (or both) of those in, we can add more weapons. Up to you guys, this is just my first crack at it.

I don’t have a Wii so I plan on getting the PS2 version, though it’s too bad it comes out 2 months after the Wii version.

The game received a 8.0 in Nintendo Power where they basically say that while it’s one of the most immersive experiences on the Wii, it never truly delivers the scares. The points of tension are supposed to be the chase scenes but they leave something to be desired. The lacking suspense leaves the puzzles to shine. NP describes them as creative and varied, yet never obtuse. They also speak of a twist ending.

They’re releasing the PS2 version two months after the Wii version…? I thought they were releasing all version of the game on the same day…

And not only was Pyramid Head kick-ass, but I really liked how he came to be and his whole part in the story (not the movie. He was there as pretty much eye candy). Now, I think I like SH2 the best out of the series. I really enjoyed the endings and I fell in love with the music (enough to where I’m doing a cover song of "Promise". And I don’t like doing things that other people have done). And I can almost relate to James as to him punishing himself. Not to the same degree mind you, but I do beat myself up a lot and actually wished to be hit in the face because of something I did.

As for Homecoming, you might want to just stick to it. It’s not as hard as the other games when it comes to the puzzles (except that one puzzle in the attic. First time I played it, that damn thing took me about an hour to do) and you’ll eventually get used to the battle system. I know it took me a while but I do admit that the game has grown on me and am kinda glad that it’s part of the SH universe.

I prefer SH3’s soundtrack, but they’re all great to me.
I just do not want to start ALL the way over….I got pretty far and it pisses me off I have to start over and go through all that annoying combat crap again. I’m sure eventually my curiosity and love for the atmosphere will compell me to play again at some point, but man I don’t wanna do all that crap again. And I really hate the combat system. Especially when fighting the Nurses and Siams. UGH D:
