I'm going somewhere in a couple of days and there's this really big comic book store (ok, comics aren't exactly manga, but whatever). I know many illustrators in nearly every other medium/art form, but I've never really been informed on the comic scene. I love Scott Pilgrim and Watchmen, but I heard about the former thanks to its likeness to manga, and the latter from a friend who was drawing comparisons with its movie adaptation. I like James Jean (Fables is amazing) and Jean Giraud's (a.k.a. Moebius) illustration style is very nice, though I've never completely read any of his works (any suggestions?). I was wondering, does anyone have any comic books/graphic novels they'd recommend or know any artists I should know about? I'm not necessarily looking for super hero fare (though I'd appreciate suggestions). I'm open to experimental and unique narratives and illustration that happen to be in the comic book format. I'm open to everything whether its serious or has more of a comical tone like Scott Pilgrim. Just a little info to narrow down suggestions:
1. Are any of them explicitly violent, graphic or sexual? I don't mind a little violence, but if it it's over the top, then it has to be part of the story (like in Watchmen) and not just there for kicks. I'm a bit more lenient when it comes to sex, well, in the sense that I want it to be there only if it develops the story, and not just for pornographic uses.
2. I like Star Wars and I've heard good things about Knights of the Old Republic, but there are many other series so I'd like other suggestions as well.
3. I'd prefer starting off with "basic" comics. I'm not really looking for anything that's too "indie." You know, works that are pretentious for the sake of being pretentious and abstract for he sake of being abstract. I like that kind of content, but after I've read the basics and have understood the various concepts and philosophies of the medium. Is there anything you would recommend that's along the lines of, say, Watchmen? Simple and basic in presentation, but with deep undertones related to many global/societal subjects and enough philosophy to spend time thinking about even after you've out the book down.
4. As I said, I'm not necessarily looking for super hero fare. When I say "along the lines of Watchmen," I mean something with a good story and competent/decent art (having or not having super heros doesn't really make a difference is the story and art are good).
5. I don't mind the art style used for the illustrations, but I'd like it to have at least some quality.
I'd appreciate any and all suggestions.
