This thread is mainly to catalog my posts from the Lossless Video Game Soundtrack Thread (Thread 64743) and as a place to present gamerips I've made, as well as other music that might not belong in that thread. It's archival. I don't really expect it to be active, but if you're going to or you've already downloaded something I've posted, please take a moment to reply and say thanks!

Everything in this first post is stuff that has already been posted in the Lossless VGM thread. Anything else I upload will be added as a reply to this thread, with an ongoing list of updated links in this first post. 2011 Edit: And, of course, the stand-alone threads (Thread 78303) for any new uploads.

About the music:
I use EAC to rip from official releases and, whenever possible, original game discs. I've used this popular guide (http://blowfish.be/eac/) to install and configure EAC to what some sites consider to be "perfect"; it's a nebulous term, but it mostly means:

Rip in "secure" mode
Defeat the disc drive's audio cache
Utilize accurate stream
NO use of C2 pointers
Use proper pregap detection and append gaps to previous track

When EAC can't be used, I strive to find the highest quality release of a game's soundtrack (see this Toy Story 2 rip (http://forums.ffshrine.org/showthread.php?p=1440874#post1440874); Dreamcast's 44.1khz audio vs. PS1's 37.8khz) and convert it with the proper tools. In most cases, this material is already stored in a lossy format, so FLAC is used to ensure that there is no further loss of quality. A lot of people seem to misunderstand this, so all I can say is: trust me.

I also enjoy recording from handheld consoles like the Gameboy and Gameboy Advance, and I plan to post a few recordings from my favorite games sometime soon.

As I've shown with Dero~n Dero Dero and Toy Story 2, I like fulfilling oddball requests when I can. If you've got an old disc-based game that you can't find any decent music for, send me a PM and ask me about it.

Here are two Ace Combat series soundtracks. Everything comes from a real game disc; no backups. Air Combat has everything in CDDA, so an EAC rip was possible. Ace Combat 2 is a straight XA-to-FLAC conversion with no embellishments.

Many thanks to Ace Combat fansite Electrosphere (http://www.theelectrosphere.com/index.php) for help on track titles (http://www.theelectrosphere.com/air-combat.html) and additional composer information (http://www.theelectrosphere.com/ace-combat-21.html). VGMdb helped a tiny bit (http://vgmdb.net/album/375).

EAC log (http://anonym.to/?http://www.pastie.org/1721977)

Track titles and composer info come from the great AC series resource Electrosphere (http://electrosphere.acecombatskies.com/).

This is an original game disc ripped with EAC, not an ISO backup. This is one of the earliest PlayStation games so most of its audio comes from traditional CD-DA. The only things missing from this upload are the title screen music and the music that plays underneath the voice over briefings, both of which are sequenced tracks that play through software synth (PSF). For the sake of offering a complete rip, the mission briefings read by British actor Daniel Dresner have been included (there's a separate track for each one), as well as a final 4-minute track of silence.

Three versions of this game were compared:
PlayStation version: 18900Hz XA
Dreamcast version: 44100Hz ADPCM
PC version: Unknown, but probably the worst of the three

The PC version's music could not be easily located, but the bulk of the disc's data is devoted to MPEG cinemas, leaving very little space for music after the game data.

Compositions are the same between the PS and DC versions. While both versions contain a sound-alike version of Golden Earring's "Radar Love" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw9CzSSk218), only the PlayStation version has a sound-alike version of The Who's "Baba O'Riley" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2KRpRMSu4g). It's been included in both downloads as the file "PSBOR" and should give you some idea of just how bad the PS audio is. It's an Ogg file in the MP3 archive, since MP3s cannot be encoded at 18900Hz.

I've never played the game, so the tracks are unordered. The original stream names are pretty descriptive, though.

The PS1 version of Sarge's Heroes 2 has the same low audio quality as the PS1 version of the first game (Thread 87869), but the PS2 version picks up the slack and offers the same compositions at a much higher 48kHz sample rate. Extracting this music was much simpler than I thought it would be, thanks to some presumed laziness on 3DO's part. If you have your own copy of the game or an ISO to browse through, simply navigate to the MUSIC directory and extract all the *.SSN files. Rename these files to *.SND and you have a format that can be read by current versions of vgmstream and decoded by test. The only drawback is that vgmstream will attempt to seamlessly loop the music where it should be a play-once-and-done sort of thing.

All I'm responsible for here is the conversion and some chopping and editing in Audacity.

I also ran into a big "WTF" moment which I summed up best on another board, so here's a quote box:

So there I was, digging through the data of the PS2 version of Army Men: Sarge's Heroes 2 looking for music to fulfill a request on another forum. I found it easily enough and, thankfully, didn't have to jump through many hoops to get it working. They were just renamed SND files, though not of the type that Windows Media Player or anything else but vgmstream could recognize. test.exe decoded them fine (though it didn't catch the endpoints) and identified the headers as those found in a Might & Magic game.

Interesting part starts here: As I double checked the converted files, there was one song that stuck out at me. It was a much longer song, 5:16 in length, and with much better production values than the rest of the soundtrack. It even had vocals; a trio or a quartet singing some nice soulsy, easy-listening lyrics. It's bugging me bad, so I take a 30-second clip and upload it to audiotag.info for identification.

The result? "Soul Food to Go (Sina)" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbDYmMyKxoc), a 1987 song by the pop/jazz-fusion group The Manhattan Transfer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Manhattan_Transfer). I can't find any evidence that this song plays in-game or that it's even supposed to be on the game disc. A google search for "sarge's heroes manhattan transfer" turns up nothing, and some quick shuffling through Youtube videos for the game also turn up nothing. Easter egg? Non-utilized content? Some dweeb left his album rip on the game's gold disc?

So yeah, there's a song from a 70s vocal group just sitting on the game disc. If you've played the game and can remember any point where that song plays, please let me know.

These tracks are unordered, but they have descriptive file names. They have some old 8.3 filenames on the disc, but an index (http://www.pastie.org/1736817) in the music directory shows their original names. A few files are 24kHz but most are 48kHz.

Someone on another message board requested this a long time ago. I was surprised to find both the English PlayStation release and the Japanese Sega Saturn release use redbook CD audio for the music, so here's a nice EAC rip to share with you. The music is exactly the same between both systems and languages, except the Saturn release has a few more jingles.

It's nothing special. The person I ripped it for said it reminded them of Monster Rancher, so take that as you will. Everything loops too long because it's CD game audio.

Data track contains wallpapers, video trailers, a mirror of the Iridion II website (as it appeared Summer 2003), and a Windows PC-executable playback-only version of the GAX 2.0 sound engine with the entire original soundtrack of Iridion II (essentially a locked-down GBA emulator). Your anti-virus may flag the executable as a keylogger. This is a FALSE POSITIVE.

I've just found out that there's a $10 digital release for this on cdbaby (http://anonym.to/?http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/ManfredLinzner). Please buy it if you like it, as it's probably currently the only way to show support for Shin'en's (heretofore) only soundtrack release.

* The music in both the Dreamcast and Playstation versions of the game is exactly the same. The files are different, though. Redbook audio from the Sega Saturn version of Arcade Gears: Image Fight & X Multiply. These arcade recordings are surprisingly clean and very listenable compared to most other console-ported arcade audio. Drawbacks on this disc include a lack of fade-outs and a huge disparity in volume between the two games (tracks from Image Fight are very soft compared to X Multiply).

It's great music from one of Irem's most talented composers, no matter what form it takes.

This is a line-in recording from a Nintendo DS Lite and an original Super Princess Peach cartridge, recorded sometime in 2009. This was done mainly as a private project and a time-waster, but now I'd like to share it because of the lack of a proper 2sf set and my own dissatisfaction with the emulator-based recordings I've heard. Nobody ever cared, but here it is anyway: I commit it to the internet, forever.

First of all, the sound test is incomplete, lacking many jingles and other transitional themes. Second, activating a track in the sound test creates a sound that overlaps with the beginning of each song. Every other rip I've heard hits both these points: they don't stray from the sound test and they don't bother to fix the activation sound. This recording uses the sound test for convenience, but carefully edits in clean introductions from multiple gameplay sessions. This proved to be somewhat difficult, as nearly every screen transition (map-to-level, level-to-level, pausing and unpausing) comes with some cute sound effect that overlaps with the start of the music.

What you'll hear in this recording is the result of two complete play-throughs, necessary to capture every jingle and multiple passes of certain stage themes, pieced together to ultimately create as clean a recording as possible. Even after all this, there are still one or two spots where SFX were unavoidable. You're on your own in finding them.

What you WON'T hear are the tracks as filtered through Peach's emotions. It's not worth it.
