Went to see it yesterday and at first I was quite surprised. I assumed it would have just been about the Basterds, gore etc. I'm quite thankful it didn't fall into that pit hole though. I tried to stay away from spoilers and everything else and enjoyed all the intertwining stories.

After seeing Death Proof I kind of felt Tarantino lost it some what. I know, Death Proof was a homage to the old exploitation movies but I though the extended cut was pretty boring apart from the action scnes. The women were annoying with every scene they were in ehich made the 10 minute cafe talking scene torture. But I liked some of it and I'll let him slide on that. Thankfully IB soared way about my expectations. I thought it was beautifully shot, have incredibly smart dialogue, characters that I fell in love with and a story and premise that is just perfect for a Tarantino movie.

What I love about a Tarantino movie is that he usually throws us a curve ball when it comes to his cast. Now apart from Pitt and Roth I thought it was spot on. For me, whenever Pitt was on screen it just felt somewhat odd. I didn't think he sold it very well and I don't think he fitted in perfectly like much of the cast did. Also, every time I saw Eli Roth I just though, "Hey, it's that shit director and Tarantinos best friend". Because of this I felt more involed in the story set in the cinema rather than the goings on of the Basterds. Apart from them everyone was spot on especially Christoph Waltz and Mlanie Laurent. Just superb!

I also thought it had just enough of a balance of laughs, action and drama to get me through the two and a half hours without looking at my watch. Loved it in every way imaginable.

Thoughts?

Yeah I was actually gonna make this thread... but then I got high.

It was an amazing film, not what I expected, I also thought it would just be violence and gore and nazis getting tortured. I'd never even heard of Christoph Waltz before but now I wanna see more films with him.
It was actually also kind of cool because I took a German Cinema class last fall, and caught a lot of neat references.

I think as far as Quentin goes, this is tied with Reservoir Dogs as my favorite film of his.

I also remember hearing about it in 2006, thinking it had a cool title but then was disappointed when I looked at the minimal description thinking it was just gonna be a war movie, and those tend to put me to sleep easily. Especially WWII/Holocaust movies, I've seen enough of those that they're kinda boring now and all seem the same (and I am Jewish so naturally they get rammed down my throat, but I'll admit that Life is Beautiful stood out).
The only reason I decided to give in to it was because I heard everyone who's seen it talk about how amazing it is and I enjoyed Quentin's other films, and admittedly I had looked at the more recently updated description and it sounded like it really would be more entertaining.

I loved it so much. The action was satisfying but the dialogue was juicy enough for that alone to make me love it. Both the bar scene and the scene with the strudel in the restaurant were my absolute favourites. I totally agree with you aboust the casting Denny, Laurent and Waltz were perfect, as was the Nazi officer that they played celebrity heads with. Pitt always annoys me and I don't think this role was really any different to a bunch of others he's done. IMO it's his best film yet, though I probably have a softer spot for the Kill Bills.

Just love how they miss out Basterds in the commericals, so now it's just "Inglourious"

That's only in Ireland and UK, TM. You see, if the children saw the word BASTERD the whole world would end.

Loved it. Probably my second favorite of his behind Pulp. I agree about Roth (I thought he was pretty terrible in it), but I actually though Pitt did a great job. He had good dialogue and he delivered it well. His accent made me laugh out loud on several occasions.

*SPOILER* (maybe?)

I also thought the guy that played the British film buff that goes in undercover as a German did an amazing job. In fact, the entire scene in the basement cafe was the best part of the movie to me.

I think I broadly agree with Denny. The trailer left me with the impression that the film was a 2 and a half hour long sequence of Nazis being killed in ridiculous ways when it's basically the polar opposite. I don't like Tarantino as a person, though like Morrissey he's fantastic at what he does, and in interviews promoting the film he annoyed me, so that combined with the trailer combined with Death Proof being pretty rubbish made me decide I had no interest in seeing Inglourious Basterds. However, the hype surrounding any Tarantino release, the positive reviews everyone seemed to be giving it and the realisation it wasn't just killing Nazis for two and a half hours made me reconsider and I'm delighted I did go see it. Beautifully shot, very well written, great story, well paced and some very funny moments, it's an absolutely brilliant film. I've a few criticisms too, but nothing that majorly hampered my enjoyment. All I would say is it's only the second best film of the year behind Public Enemies in my opinion, despite it not being particularly well received. Yeah!

Aha! Thanks very much for posting that link. I never saw the beginning and missed the title, but I remember liking it and wanting to find out about it, but didn't know where to begin. Awesome.

The two stoners in their flat at the end of the film had me rolling with laughter. The one guy's little tangent about how being really high is akin to being in a hot air balloon. Good stuff.

Just saw these movie last week it blew my mind, im not a big fan of Tarantino to be honest, I've only watched 2 of his flicks (this and Pulp Fiction) and Im pretty much amazed with the film, its very well done, it made my heart race, especially on chapter five. I also liked the division in chapters since it makes it look like pulp fiction altough they're very different, the characters are exteremely well done and they develop in an extraordinary way, i must say Landa is the most interesting of characters. I would like to know your opinion and be able to discuss the movie more deeply. This is absolutely a must see.

it would be fun to watch this movie and make a list of historical inaccuracies in SS uniforms and military rankings.
