Hails!

This thread is dedicated to the sounds and songs of the great Nintendo Entertainment System. It's all about this original Nintendo console and it's timeless chiptunes.

Since the NES uses the processor known as the "6502", I have affectionately named this collection "6.5.0.Tunes"!

So without haste...

Welcome to 6.5.0.Tunes!

Here is what's to offer:

Full NES soundtracks with every song from the game that can be acquired.
Complete ID3 tag information of song name, composer, year of release, U.S. box cover (thumbnail pic), and accurate as possible "track names".
Full stereo sound production using multiple squarewave channel panning and doubling effects [NOTE: Does not change original NES sound, only makes it in stereo).
Adequate track lengths for satisfactory listening (3-4 repeats) and well planned fade-out times.
Tracks are strategically placed in order of appearance as in the actual game (i.e. "Level 1" music is listed before "Level 2").
All songs are in mp3 format, encoded in Variable Bit-Rate as high as 192 kbps down to 160 kbps.

Notes of importance:

- Archives are in zip file format. Should extract with the latest version of WinRAR or other zip file utilities.
- All links are personally hosted, so at no point should any of them be down.
- Converting NES music to mp3 format is a very time-consuming process (anywhere from 3-5 hours per game ST). Please be patient as I will try to fill all requests when possible.

All of the music in this thread can be found on the official 6.5.0.Tunes webpage:

http://robertlbryant.com/ptn/6.5.0.Tunes/
The webpage lists additional composer and software developer information.

----------

Most of these games' music can be found on the web in single-loop, low quality "mono" format. I wanted to give these songs a bit more flair for the modern listeners by giving them the "stereo" status. That is what the main goal of 6.5.0.Tunes is all about.

Any comments questions, criticisms, mild insults, and borderline objectionable imagery are welcome here.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback regarding mistakes such as incorrectly listed composers, inaccurate song titles, spelling errors, audio problems, et cet.

Requests are definitely accepted. Unfortunately, I have been away from this project for quite a while. I can't guarantee that I will get around to fullfilling all requests.

I will update this thread continually with each new game added whenever possible.
This is a great community. I hope I can be a more frequent contributer.

Thanks for visiting.

awesome that you're doing this but I have some encoding comments for you

1) don't use CBR for such simple output. tons of NES music has music that doesn't need a very high bitrate at all. if you rip it with lame at -V 0 or -V 2 you'll get a smaller size than 128 or 160CBR with higher quality. video game music should almost always be in VBR, but it makes the biggest difference with "old" vgm since the sounds to compress are so simple.

a bit more elaboration: let's say 90% of a song can maintain 100% of the original quality by being encoded at 96kbps. the other 10% needs a bitrate of 192kbps to maintain maximum quality.

if you encode at 128kbps two things happen. 1) you're encoding at too high a bitrate for the majority of the song, and wasting space. 2) the other 10% will be of lower quality than it would be in VBR.

2) there's no point in converting mono source source into stereo output. this is done by default in all players. if you feel you must do this for some reason, use joint stereo, not full stereo.

Yeah is still don't know why some are still using CBR. The worst of all is of course 320kbps.

Thanks for clarifying this (I am relatively new at encoding). The problem is, I use a program called Audacity to make the mp3s. I originally convert the NSF of a game directly to .wav format (which makes a gigantic 400+ MB file) , then load the wav into audacity where I cut/paste the songs as mp3. Audacity only supports CBR by default, so that was the main reason why I was using the "constant bit-rate".

However, after reading further, it only makes sense to use VBR. As an experiment I ripped a 3 minute NES song, exported it from audacity as uncompressed wav, then used lame in commandline to set it at VBR with a max bit-rate of 160. I ended up with a file size of 2.92 MB compared to the usual 128 CBR which makes the same song 2.66 MB at lower quality.
I think I will be using VBR from here on though (It's just that it is one extra step in the process of making them). If I could get audacity to export as VBR, everything would be perfect.

2) there's no point in converting mono source source into stereo output. this is done by default in all players. if you feel you must do this for some reason, use joint stereo, not full stereo.
I don't quite understand this. As far as I know "stereo output" is required if the final result is going to be a stereo mp3 track.
Most of them are in fact "joint stereo" when I convert the NSF to wav using an output plug-in called FileWriter.
The only true full stereo ones are the older ST's I ripped using an outdated real-time digital recorder method. This was the case for Strider, Batman, and Zelda II (which explains why there's some minimal pops/cracks in the files). I will be redoing these however, using my current filewriter method.

Yes you can use any of them you want.
But since you are doing "shoot'em-ups", you might as well use 'Silver Surfer' too.

This is interesting, but if you're only using NSF's, we're really no better off than just listening to the NSF's themselves (unless you want to put these onto your iPod or something). I thought you were recording directly from an NES, which would sound a bit better.

This is nice, but I've got actual soundtrack releases for most of these. Oh well.

Apologies for the delay. I ran into life-threatening technical problems that threatened the life of my technical equipment.
There's a lot of catching up to do, so here is the extremely late "Halloween Update".

Added to first post:

Castlevania
Original side-scrolling horror-themed game that started it all.

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
Amazing classically influenced music. Done well in Nintendo Sound Format.

Fester's Quest
Funky, upbeat stuff from the masterful Sunsoft sound team.

Friday the 13th
Voted as "Most annoying Game Music" somewhere else on these forums. Now you can have it to annoy all of your friends and family! (I really like the echoing cabin theme though.)

Ghosts 'n Goblins
Funky yet sinister. Some fun music for a very difficult game.

...

Also added:

A Boy and His Blob
Mark Van Hecke's catchy beats set to this quirky adventure. Very good use of drum samples.

Batman
Has now been redone and encoded to 192 VBR (was originally 128 CBR). The percussion pops aren't so obnoxious now.

Strider
Also been completely redone. No more pops/cracks in this one anymore. New VBR quality.

Re-encoded:

HeroQuest
Silver Surfer
Solstice
Theses are all the same rips as before, just re-encoded to VBR for anyone who cares. Bitrate should be 160 kbps.

...

More on the way!

This is interesting, but if you're only using NSF's, we're really no better off than just listening to the NSF's themselves (unless you want to put these onto your iPod or something).
Key reason.

It's just a matter of getting the music to these old 8-bit games onto the same format as our current PlayStation/XBOX soundtracks.
Use these to make playlists, CDs, or listen to in your car.

NSFs lack track length (except for NSFe) and generally require a certain media player and special plug-in to play.
MP3s = good!

I thought you were recording directly from an NES, which would sound a bit better.
No. It would sound worse. I would be recording from an straight analog source with a minor chance of interference.
Some of these were recorded straight from the system and sounded horrible (that's why I redid 'Batman' using the NSF method).

There is nothing wrong with NSFs. They sound about 99.7% accurate to the original console sound and about 45% better. Trust me, I would not even bother to do this if the NSFs weren't faithful to the original sound. All the games I've done sound authentic.

This is nice, but I've got actual soundtrack releases for most of these. Oh well.
But are they in stereo? Do they loop more than twice?
I have heard some of these "official" soundtracks, and they just don't do the games justice sometimes.

Super Mario Bros.
18 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Super_Mario_Bros.7z)

This was groundbreaking music for its time. 20 years later, it hasn't aged (still as catchy as ever).
Also included some unused songs and the Famicom ending theme for 'Super Mario Bros. 2' (japan) which uses the FDS expansion channel.

Journey To Silius
12 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Journey_to_Silius.7z)

Got a lot of requests for this one. I consider it my best sounding rip yet.
If you're not familiar with the work of Nobuyuki Hara, Naoki Kodaka, and the rest of the Sunsoft sound team, here's a good introduction to it.

Note of importance: I made a mistake when tagging the newly re-encoded 'Silver Surfer'. I accidently left out Geoff Follin's name for the artist. The composers are actually both Tim & Geoff Follin. This has already been corrected.

Until next time...

I nearly forgot that I also added this:

Recca - Summer Carnival '92
20 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Recca.7z)

Check it out. It's like club/dance music done in NES sound.
Great stuff!

...

Another thing- I re-tagged 'Castlevania III' with the individual composer's names. I originally put "Kukeiha Club" (that's what most VG composer sites label it), but I left that in just in case it's correct.
I'm not exactly sure what the deal with this "Kukeiha Club" is. They are listed among all the older Castlevania games but there never seems to be a 100% certain answer on who the original composers for those games really are.
Any info on this will be appreciated.

for your info Kukeiha Club (or even the "KONAMI Kukeiha Club") is the Konami band, like the KONAMI Sound Team.
it's an awesome team, with a lot of composers, arrangers & some fans that were contribute to the KONAMI Game Music.

Bionic Commando
20 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Bionic_Commando.7z)

In anticipation of the new orchestral re-arrangement of the original songs for the upcoming modernized 'Bionic Commando', here is the NES version's music in all its simple, militaristic glory.

That's good. I was starting to think that maybe they didn't really exist and that "Kukeiha Club" was just a fabricated name for the composers.
I still want to use individual names if possible. It just looks better.

Do you have one for the Nightmare on elm street game comming?? I love the music for that game!
It was originally supposed to be part of the "Halloween update" but got lost in the technical maliciousness.
I could put that one on deck though. The only problem is that it's one of those games that's really hard to tag/arrange correctly.

I do have the NSF for 'Wario's Woods' but I don't know how complete/accurate it is (not familiar with the game).

Here is the download directory of my current NSF collection:

It's still not complete but there's enough to keep me busy for a while.

My friend, alas, I must complain...

This false stereo effect is NOT COOL. The NES output was mono, and the music itself was written with mono in mind. The purist in me says the tracks should remain so, rather than what you've done - I can't quite put my finger on what's happened, but I have to tell you that I get a splitting headache listening to your tracks with headphones, which usually happens to me with out of phase or inverted audio. How did you do what you did? One thing is for sure, this is NOT preserving the original NES sound - if it were, I should have able to merge both tracks and end up with a mono track that is identical to the original.

I have seen a technique for generating stereo out of NES audio that involves splitting up the two pulse channels between left and right and sticking everything else in the centre. This keeps the music nice and dynamic and also faithful to the original, because you can combine left and right and end up with completely mono compatible output.

I'm sorry to be so critical & hope that you won't be offended at this. :)

Z.E.N

The NES output was mono, and the music itself was written with mono in mind.
That's true. It was originally designed for mono output.
However, that doesn't mean that it would not sound good (not worse) in stereo.
Example: Listen to Tim and Geoff Follin's 'Silver Surfer' music- it almost sounds like it was created with stereo in mind. Especially this song (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Level_Theme_1.mp3) (that cool stuff from :58 to :124 mark wouldn't sound nearly as masterful without stereo).

The purist in me says the tracks should remain so
The revisionist in me says "do something different to this outdated sound output format". :)
Further support for this statement was made in the very first post.

I can't quite put my finger on what's happened, but I have to tell you that I get a splitting headache listening to your tracks with headphones, which usually happens to me with out of phase or inverted audio
Sorry but it sounds like your problem, not the audio itself.
I do all the mixing/monitoring/editing/mastering through headphones. If it doesn't sound right through headphones then it probably won't sound right on any kind of speaker.

One thing is for sure, this is NOT preserving the original NES sound - if it were, I should have able to merge both tracks and end up with a mono track that is identical to the original.
I've never tried merging the stereo track into mono just to "test" it (seems just an unnecessary step in unnecessary validation). I'm making these soundtracks with owners of at least "2 speakers" or more in mind.
I know exactly what the original sounds like and guarantee that my mp3s are about 99.9% accurate to the original sound.

I have seen a technique for generating stereo out of NES audio that involves splitting up the two pulse channels between left and right and sticking everything else in the centre. This keeps the music nice and dynamic and also faithful to the original, because you can combine left and right and end up with completely mono compatible output.
Technically that would be "stereo" but far from "dynamic". I would prefer to be much more sophisticated given that I now have the ability and equipment to help me do so.
The NES music I've uploaded is based on the stereo separation and mixing of individual audio channels rather than the entire piece of music as a whole.
Separating the channels allows for greater stereo possibilities. I can have some instruments ring out more than others, wave leads are more prominent where they should be, wave rhythms play middle and sides lightly, bass stays in the center (like it's supposed to), high-pitched percussion hits on the extreme left/rights, etc. Sorry, but can't do that with your suggested method. It may work better (not worse) when going back to listen to it in mono, but I did not intend anyone to listen to '6.5.0-Tunes' in mono or from just one speaker.

I'm sorry to be so critical & hope that you won't be offended at this. :)
You were responding as a purist who cares about the original sound. No problem with that.

Just let it be known that I don't really buy into the "mono is true" belief.
Mono NES mp3 rips are everywhere. Stereo is my thing.

-Newly added:

Tetris (Nintendo)
7 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Tetris.7z)

Catchy Nintendo tunes from the classic addictive puzzler. Includes the famous NES version of "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies".

-Newly re-encoded:

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
19 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Zelda_2.7z)

'Zelda II' has been upgraded to 160 VBR! Also included two Famicom version tracks.
The previous upload was missing the proper "Palace Boss" music. Also credited the wrong composer. It's fixed now.

If you downloaded 'Zelda II' soundtrack already, I strongly suggest getting this new version. It's much better.

Currently working on re-doing the following CBR rips:
- Battle of Olympus
- Castlevania II
- Contra
- Crystalis
- Faxanadu
- Legacy of the Wizard
- Legend of Zelda
- Mega Man 2
- Mega Man 5
- Metal Gear
- Metroid
- Target: Renegade

I left the current download links for those games but I'll be changing them with the better sounding versions once they're uploaded.
Once everything is up to date, I can finally get to filling in some requests.

The following archives have been newly re-recorded and remastered at a higher quality...

Legend of Zelda
11 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Legend_of_Zelda.7z)
Added the track "Found A Secret" (it's the short ditty that plays when you reveal a secret on the game). This is one of the most iconic tunes in the 'Zelda' series. Not even any of the OST's has this song (that I've heard).

Mega Man 2
22 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Mega_Man_2.7z)
Much better quality now (192 VBR). Fixed a few ID tag errors as well.
Many consider this game to have the best music in the series, so therefore it deserves much better sound quality.

Metal Gear
14 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Metal_Gear.7z)
Upped to 192 kbps and slightly louder than before.

Metroid
16 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Metroid.7z)
Higher quality. No more static.

Target: Renegade
10 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Target_Renegade.7z)
Quality up. Songs now have more accurate titles (Thanks Dr. Tim!) and sound is better.

The following archives have their original quality but have been newly re-encoded to VBR...

Crystalis
26 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Crystalis.7z)

Faxanadu
16 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Faxanadu.7z)

Legacy of the Wizard
16 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Legacy_of_the_Wizard.7z)

Mega Man 5
27 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Mega_Man_5.7z)

...
That was a lot of work.
Currently the official 6.5.0-Tunes forum is down, so for right now this is the only place on the web to get these stereo sound versions.

I appreciate all the compliments and have a few more NES soundtracks that are almost ready to be uploaded.
Enjoy for now.

Ninja Gaiden Corrections!
Track 12 "Seeking Truth" is really titled "The Nails of Lukifell"
Track 17 "Premonition" is really titled "The Masked Devil"
Track 20 "Master Ninja Theme" should be "Bazlisk Mine Field"
I chose to use their cinema screen names as opposed to their stage names. This is because of the song arrangement (in order of appearance).
The "Master Ninja Theme" is also on the GameBoy version which is a different game and does not have the mine field level.

Also newly added:

Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu
18 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Jackie_Chan.7z)
This is one of those games where you're not expecting it to be good, but it is. The music is also unexpectedly good.

...

Newly re-recorded:

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
14 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Castlevania_2.7z)
Added some additional Famicom Disk System music. It has an extra sound channel not present in the U.S./Europe NES.

Contra
12 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Contra.7z)

Both of these rips have been remastered and re-encoded up to 192 kbps VBR quality. They also have more volume than before.

Also includes "vocals" (that's right vocals...

What i still can't get is: how come a game such as Captain Tsubasa II: Super Striker, which has probably the best SFX and Music ever heard on a NES (with Megaman's permission) isn't available in mp3?
In order to hear the music, i gotta plug a NES emu for PSX on my PS2; isn't there a way to "record" the tracks and then getting into mp3? Cuz i saw a NSF extension file with this game's SFX and Music, but... i dunno.

Thanks for bringing this up. I have not gotten any feedback from Mac users so I was not aware. I can't do RAR unfortunately (I am a Linux user) but can use standard zip file. I was using 7-zip for awhile because it had the best filesize compression, but now it seems zip is about the same and is more compatible.

Currently, all the archives of mp3 albums in this thread have been converted from "7z" to "zip". Hope this helps people.
The website will be updated later with zip files also.

As long as the NSF file for a game exists, it can be converted to mp3. Unfortunately, the problem that I've found when trying to convert already available NSFs is that most of them are incomplete. This is why it took so long to get 'Twin Cobra' finished and the reason why I still haven't done Rush 'n Attack, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and Zen: Intergalactic Ninja because of missing songs.
(Note to NSF rippers: BE COMPLETE!)

I will look in to what is available.

The website is for sale, so I doubt we'll be getting anything more from ZEN.

Newly added:

Rygar - 16 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Rygar.zip)

The music from the game about the man and his yo-yo of destruction is finally here.

Interesting thing about Rygar is that most of the songs only use the two squarewave channels for the entire composition (just like 'Twin Cobra'). It's well done considering how limited the sound actually was.

Unfortunately I was not able to find out the NES composer's name (I found the C64 version's music author though). I just listed it as "Tecmo Sound". If anyone can confirm who did Rygar for NES, please let me know.

BattleToads - 20 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/BattleToads.zip)
Notoriously challenging game that features the music of Rare composer David Wise.
And just for fun, here's a music video of BattleToads (http://www.playthenes.com/Music_Video/Music_Video_Battletoads_Funkytown.htm) set to the song "FunkyTown".

Double Dragon II: The Revenge - 19 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Double_Dragon_2.zip)
Finally got it.

Karnov - 9 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Karnov.zip)
Perfect music for fat, bald communist fire-breathers.

There's one track missing: Its the tune played when you rescue Zelda after defeating Ganon.
Thanks for the observation. I was thinking it was the same tune as the "Triforce" one. I will look into this further. It was difficult getting the "Found a Secret" melody because it wasn't in any current NSF rips, so I am guessing the same is true for the missing song.

I'm glad to help. I wondered what was missing from the tracks and found out by accident. If you're unable to find the nsf file for it, I'll be willing to share an audio rip from a youtube clip. Also, the tune in question sounds similar to the Palace Clear tune from Zelda II.

Much appreciated. If all else fails, an audio clip of any kind would do. It's all about "completeness" (and upstaging any of the OST's).
I also like that sound effect after Gannon is destroyed. Would be great to add that too.
I can get them, but it would probably mean playing through to the end of 'Legend of Zelda' and logging the sound. Time-consuming, but playing that game certainly isn't a bad way to spend time.

EDIT: "Your welcome" to all of the previous posts.

Good job on this. I also credited/thanked you here (http://www.playthenes.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1327).
It's been added to the archive as track 09 - Final Victory.
I've taken this song and remastered it so the volume is level with the other Zelda tracks and added a faux stereo effect so it shouldn't sound too out-of-place.

I could be wrong, but this might be the first ever 100% complete 'Legend of Zelda' soundtrack. So enjoy!

Legend of Zelda - 12 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Legend_of_Zelda.zip)

---

Also made changes to the 'Bionic Commando' rips. The tracks have been renamed to mirror their titles from the latest OST of 'Bionic Commando ReArmed'.

Bionic Commando - 20 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Bionic_Commando.zip)

The music and arrangement is the same, just new titles for better reference.

And what about the case of NES Games that have a Sound Test incorporated? Isn't a way (or the proper programs) to do it?
Sound Tests are nice but no longer necessary for actual music ripping. They may be helpful if they contain song titles (like 'Ninja Gaiden II') but most most music can be ripped straight from the NES ROM's sound data. The problem is that not all audio can be obtained because some games used raw data sampling. However, I am on a mission to fix this.

Zen, I gotta hand it to you what you have done is brillant :) I have managed to find some NES game music but it's in mono 99 percent of the time and it can hurt your ears depending on the quality of the rip. Also, the NES is just about the only system left where the majority of the game soundtracks just aren't out there really and certainly not of this quality. I had a chance to listen to Gremlins 2, Journey to Silius and the Mega Man stuff you have up and the quality of those is EXCELLENT! They really all are in Stereo.

Can I make a request please? If you cannot do it for a while I understand, I'm used to waiting for stuff so waiting is no biggy for me. Can you please do:

The Adventures of Lolo 3
Kirby's Adventure
Tiny Toon Adventures
Tiny Toon Adventures 2

A Nightmare On Elm Street - 18 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/A_Nightmare_On_Elm_Street.zip)
By everyone's favorite Rare composer David Wise.

and...

Maniac Mansion - 22 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Maniac_Mansion.zip)
I edited the I.D. tags so that the character themes have their in-game titles and just for fun, I put the fake band names from the game as the actual artists.
However, all music was done by David Warhol of Lucas Arts (credited as "original composer").

...

Also forgot to announce on the thread a couple weeks ago. I had previously added Donkey Kong and Duck Hunt also.

Well it's obvious that quite a few of you (and myself) would like a full stereo Mother/Earthbound soundtrack. Unfortunately, it has so many songs that it will take a long time to get everything done. In the meantime, I've ripped some personal favorites as single MP3s. Here's the links to hear what they sound like...

EarthBound Zero / Mother individual tracks:
Polyanna (I Believe In You) MP3 (http://zhxhome.net/zen/VGM/Polyanna.mp3)
Bein' Friends MP3 (http://zhxhome.net/zen/VGM/Bein'_Friends.mp3)
Rock 'N Roll Battle MP3 (http://zhxhome.net/zen/VGM/Rock_n_Roll_Battle.mp3)
The Paradise Line MP3 (http://zhxhome.net/zen/VGM/The_Paradise_Line.mp3)
Wisdom of the World MP3 (http://zhxhome.net/zen/VGM/Wisdom_of_the_World.mp3)

For full soundtracks, I've newly added:

Rad Racer - 6 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Rad_Racer.zip)
For the Uematsu fans. It's one of his earliest NES games (pre-Final Fantasy).

Also I'm having trouble getting a complete rip of 'Rush 'N Attack'. So here is single song from that too.
Rush 'N Attack - Mission 2 MP3 (http://zhxhome.net/zen/VGM/Mission_2.mp3)

And while I'm at it...
Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode - Theme of Duke Togo MP3 (http://zhxhome.net/zen/VGM/Theme_of_Duke_Togo.mp3)
One of my all-time favorite intro themes. 8-)

People that are requesting certain games be ripped, or waiting for something to be finished, you might want to check the first post more carefully.

Requests are definitely accepted. Requesting at my forum (http://www.playthenes.com/forum/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=13) and/or providing information about the composer and songs (particularly "song titles") regarding a certain NES game will get requests filled much sooner.
The forum he linked to is updated much more frequently than this thread on FFShrine.
So requesting or looking for music there is probably a good idea since this thread seems to have been abandoned by its creator.
Example: Super Mario Bros. 2 is on those forums already.

Every single piece of music from the game in stereo MP3. Songs are listed in the exact order of appearance in the game (I arranged this as I was playing all the way through it). As fas I know, this is the first time the all the music has been done (even the EarthBound fansites don't have a complete soundtrack).
Enjoy. It's a good one.

---

Yes, real life stuff has kept me away from these forums. Hopefully I can find some time to get busy on making more of these.

Skate or Die!
Super C
Super Mario Bros. 2

Downloaded Bucky O'Hare, planning to download much more as I'm very satisfied with what I'm listening to right now. Much thanks. =)

--Downloaded Castlevanias, very satisfied. If you ever get around to doing more of these and have a thing for obscure NES games/soundtracks, I'd like to request "Rollergames" and/or "Sweet Home." I've never seen a soundtrack for either, and I know I'd be thrilled to see one. =)

I'm not really sure if it's place to request an OST/rip or whatever. But I can't seem to find the Rescue: The Embassy Mission OST anywhere. The thread here has so far yielded no results so I was wondering if you could rip that in mp3 format. That would be greatly appreciated.

I also want to tell you all about another site that has NES music in stereo...

I am hoping to work together with this person (for arrangements) and to keep making more stereo conversions of good NES musics.

31 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Lagrange_Point.zip)

'Lagrange Point' in stereo! This was a Famicom space RPG that used the special VRC7 soundchip. The music is very complex. Almost a 16-bit sound.

If you're a fan of Konami Kukeiha Club, this is a must download! The original OST is quite hard to find.

...

Thanks for keeping this thread alive everyone. I will work on filling requests soon.

Just in time for the winter season...

Snow Bros. - 13 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Snow_Brothers.zip)

Fun two-player 'Bubble Bobble' clone with some catchy tunes.

Also re-did the music from 'HeroQuest' because it needed more volume and a higher sampling rate.
HeroQuest - 5 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/HeroQuest.zip)

It's very good music from an unreleased NES game. Highly recommended if you haven't heard it.

I would LOVE a "Skate or Die 2" rip!
I've been wanting to do that one for awhile, but the title song is difficult to rip because of the DCPM channel audio. I will definitely attempt to do it though.

Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight - 22 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Street_Fighter_2010.zip)

Some good tunes in this one. By the same composer who did 'Bionic Commando' (Junko Tamiya).

Blaster Master - 15 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Blaster_Master.zip)

This was the first game that accomplished Sunsoft composer Naoki Kodaka worked on. It's good stuff.

Enjoy.

thanks again for doing all of these ZEN, your job on Ninja Gaiden made it my fav soundtrack of all time.
Fun fact: The music for 'Ninja Gaiden' for NES was the first that made me appreciate video game soundtracks (as posted here: http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=953356&postcount=190).
I still have my old cassettes where I used to hold my tape recorder up to the TV and play all the songs in sound test mode. Sound quality and recording technology is much better now though.
Even with all the fancy new game soundtracks, Ninja Gaiden for NES still remains among my all-time favorites.

I don't know how this works. Is iTunes a website or is it a device (iPod?) that you trying to put them on?
The files are just MP3s. Don't know why they wouldn't work.
However, I did use a slightly different encoding method for the newer stuff. Ninja Gaiden II, Snow Bros., Street Fighter 2010, HeroQuest, and Blaster Master are the ones that use the newer method. The only difference is that I made them using a plug-in with my sound editor that creates MP3s straight from the WAV file, instead of having to convert them separately with LAME encoder.
Not sure how/why this would be causing any problems.

I also use Windows Media Player to add a box cover for album art because (for some unknown reason) it won't show up when I try to add it with EasyTag.

Maybe that's causing it?
Any one else with an iPod want to confirm? Or is it iTunes?

Maybe iTunes is jealous of 6.5.0.Tunes.

Hey Zen,can you make Batman 2 soundtrack plz???
If you mean 'Batman: Return of the Joker', then yes that's definitely on standby. It's another Kodaka (Sunsoft) soundtrack.
I'm trying to space out the different artists for now, but it will definitely be coming soon.

I see what you mean, but your terminology might be confusing people. What you meant to say is that you can't import them into your iTunes library. I tried it also. They seem to import but then are nowhere to be found. I transcoded in foobar with the LAME encoder and then imported (just as a test) into iTunes and it worked just fine. I'm not sure why it wouldn't work in the first place either, and transcoding isn't the best solution as it might goof up the files a bit. ZEN---Maybe go back to your earlier method as it looks like your tagging program had problems recognizing the files also?

I transcoded in foobar with the LAME encoder

Where can I find this?

jakob
01-16-2010, 09:53 PM
Get foobar 2000 (http://www.foobar2000.org/?page=Download) . You also need the lame mp3 encoder (http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php). Get version 3.98.2, the best current version. Just put the plugin in your foobar components folder (wherever you installed foobar), open the mp3s (in foobar), select what you want to convert, right-click, hit convert "..." , tell it where you want it to save and in what format, and there you go.

Alternatively, there must be something goofy with those files, Z.E.N.

Z.E.N, I have to compliment you on the awesome work you've done here. These sound absolutely fantastic, and to echo what some have said, better than some official releases. Hats off to you. :)

If you're taking requests, can I request Jackal, Gradius, Gradius II, Life Force, Monster Party and Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti? A lot, I know, but as I know these take time to do and others have requested before me, I'm in no rush.

For everyone that's having trouble uploading some of these into iTunes, I experienced the same issue with Ninja Gaiden II (Blaster Master worked just fine). My solution was to burn the OST onto a CD using Express Burn (although I'm sure any music CD creation program would work just fine) and rip it directly into iTunes after that. I had to completely rename the tracks, but it worked.

These just sound absolutely superior, thank you so much, it must take a bit of work. In particular I was really happy to get the Castlevania soundtracks because the official 'Famicom' Best is not the famicom versions at all but instead the Disc Drive sounds (of 2 and 3). They're interesting, but these are the sounds we grew up with. Serious thanks.

Since you've got SF 2010, Strider and Bionic Commando up, does that mean there's a possibility to see Nemo the Dream Master, Mighty Final Fight, Legendary Wings or Gunsmoke in the future? Just wondering.

Anyone who wants my now unneeded Dracula Famicom best CD can have it for free...if you can come get it from Okayama City ;)

Batman: Return of the Joker - 15 Tracks (http://zhxhome.net/zen/Batman-Return_of_the_Joker.zip)

More great music from the Sunsoft sound team. Just like their other works, this has an amazing bass sound for NES.

---

Also I think I found the problem with the iTunes thing. There were illegal characters in the ID3 tags caused by my faulty tagging app. I installed a new one to use and fixed up the older rips. I don't have a way to test this though because I don't use iTunes/iPods, so I hope it's alright now.

I believe those are all Tamiya's compositions for Capcom. There seems to be a lot of requests for those, so they are definitely in the works.

I also want as many of the Famicom expansion audio games as possible (like 'Esper Dreams'). I already have 'Lagrange Point' and want to finish 'Madara'. Problem is that these games are a nightmare to arrange because they're not in English and I can't play through them.

A little something extra...

Many of you might be familiar with the song "Bad Apple!!", which was featured in this great Touhou silhouette animation video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sib2L6A6xgw

It seems someone has made a Famicom demo that plays the animation in monochrome graphics. You can find that demo here:
http://www.geocities.jp/littlimi/bad_apple_2.htm
(Unzip the .nes file and play it in a NES emulator to see it.)

Of course, they also did the song in actual Nintendo Sound Format, so here it is as a bonus MP3 (in stereo, of course).

(http://zhxhome.net/zen/VGM/bad_apple_%28famicom%29.mp3)Bad Apple!! (Famicom sound version) by KARA (http://zhxhome.net/zen/VGM/bad_apple_%28famicom%29.mp3)

Converting NES music to mp3 format is a very time-consuming process (anywhere from 3-5 hours per game ST). Please be patient as I will try to fill all requests when possible.

Just run it through NotSoFatso or whatever NSF emu you use and adjust the ST panning however you want...you really don't have to mix the channles manually.

First off you are not making "digital" copies from NSF, they are analog wavs using your sound card. They aren't recording at 1x nor do you have any control over the levels, but there's no advantage to it - if anything it's not as good since you don't have control over your input levels.

Secondly if you are trying to preserve the NES sound (i.e. not remix or enhance) you would use the NSF player and a flash cart that supports it like the NES PowerPak.

You can listen to some of my Hardware NES music, it's mono but we did EQ it and add some ST Reverb: http://www.youtube.com/user/fixfred99#p/u/5/Pn63BKWFYSU

I can't agree with NES Hardware being worse (just more difficult to do - requires more time) and mono mix also being worse. It's better to leave it mono and enhance it (or just leave it pure) then it is to remix it in ST....though a lot of OST did but doesn't mean it's better.
