I'm going to play the Squall and Laguna looks alike card here and agree that it's Squall. Squall and Laguna look too alike to be a coincidence (I actually confused Laguna with Squall the first time I saw the ending video at a video store who's playing one of those bootleg FFVIII "The Movie" VideoCDs). Apart from that, I agreed with what others have said about the subtle hints, having read through the entire transcript.

I am 99.99% convinced that Laguna is Squall's father. The evidence, as already discussed and beaten to death in the referenced thread is overwhelming --- the best clue I think being that it's clearly stated in the game that moombas identify people by the scent of their blood and when the moogles in the desert prison encounter Squall, they shout "Laguna! Laguna!"

Uh, sorry, but big duh on that one. In the closing video, Laguna visits Raine's grave --- Raine Loire. So unless you're suggesting that Squall was Laguna's illegitimate child, which I really doubt...

It's obvious there isn't "conclusive" proof, but the conclusion is more than drawn for you if you're looking hard enough. Like we seem want to do :D

I admit that Kneg and funnyboy4004 does have a point there. If Squall wasn't in anyway related to Laguna, the Moombas would have just kept quiet about it. And as I have said before, Squall and Laguna do look alike. Seifer, on the other hand, bears no resemblance to Laguna or Raine at all.

Plus Ward and Kiros make remarks like "you're like your father" or something and Laguna apparently has this big thing he needs to talk to Squall about, after they get rid of Ultimecia. I don't see him wanting to talk to Squall about Balamb's and Esthar's trade possibilities or the price of houses in Balamb.

cuz they probably never realized it... I mean, the first time i played the game and beat it, i was like huh, i didn't get half of what i just did... So i played it again and again.. And finally, i found out the little little details that are hard to miss...

I don't think through their first playthrough people actually cared who's squalls father was... I sure as hell didn't.. and really i still don't care.. but i know it's Laguna...

Caring has little to do with anything. If you're playing the game, it's safe to assume you read those little dialogue boxes. If you read those, it isn't hard to spot the not-so-subtle subtleties, is what I'm saying.

My opinion is that the story is Laguna an ex galbadian soldier, who had a thing for Julia (Rinoas mother). Julia was in love with this soldier but he went to war. He never came back, making a song about him and her long lost true love. Instead she marries general caraway, she has a baby (Rinoa) and dies when Rinoa was 5. Laguna was sent to war but was injured and then taken care of by raine, and ellone. Ellone was only 5. Making her 22 in the future. Raine took in Laguna and nursed him back to health, in return he fought monsters in win hill to keep it safe. It was only an excuse to stay close to raine and ellone. Then kiros came by in the beginning of disc 2. Convincing Laguna about his writing and how timber maniacs are looking for some to travel and write about their experiences. (Lagunas dream) but Laguna was still afraid to leave raine and ellone. When he does ellone is captured to think she was the successor over adel. then u find out about a mysterious power she has. While Laguna tries to get into esthar but he fails and gets hurt and that's when the shumi tribe helps him. During this time of him trying to save ellone raine dies from giving birth to squall. Thus ending up in the orphanage. By 5 or 6 squall was sent to seed which was founded by Edea and CID, which was given by the idea of teenage squall when he comes back from the future with ultemecia dying looking for someone to give her powers to which was Edea. Squall passes seed exam and was put on his first mission with Rinoa and that's the connection of the story and they learn this thru the game and on the way to beat the sorceress. But if squall was not Lagunas then there would of been a father to know raine was pregnant unless she's a slut that likes one night stands lol.

It's pretty much accepted that Squall is the child of Laguna Loire and Raine Loire (As they were married) and Rinoa being the child of Julia Heartilly and General Fury Caraway.
