Final Fantasy Rumble 6.0--vote for your favorite FF music! [Archive]

It's that time of year again! I bring you the sixth annual Final Fantasy Music Rumble.

This is a Final Fantasy music knock-out game.

128 songs from the main Final Fantasy series (1-15) will be randomly paired head-to-head. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to pick a winner in each pairing.

* I will be posting the match-ups in groups of 8 every few days, but all brackets (A-H) will remain open until r2, so feel free to go back and vote if you missed one.

* The first round will remain open at least until 7 people vote.

* Tracks will be listed with their cumulative total votes through 2018.

* There is absolutely no standard criteria for voting.

* In the event of a tie, the statistical underdog always wins.

* DO NOT edit vote changes into your original posts. Make a new post. Due to the way I am counting these now, a change will very likely be overlooked if you edit it in.

* Off-site voting: I will be extending an invitation to Mafia Universe to vote off-site this year. This usually results in 3-4 "invisible" votes for those of you keeping track here. I'll link the thread in case you're curious.

* 7 tracks made the cut for the first time this year, adding three Final Fantasy 15 and two Final Fantasy 5 tracks into the fray, along with one each from Final Fantasies 8 and 13. 19 established tracks that failed to qualify last year will be returning. That makes 26 total entries in this year's rumble that did not appear in 2018. (Last year was 8 and 19 for 27. Seems we're pretty consistent here.)

If you're curious, last year's winner was Final Fantasy IX - Freya's Theme.
It beat Final Fantasy IX - Dark Messenger 6-3 in the finals.
The semi-finalists were Final Fantasy V - Clash on the Big Bridge and Final Fantasy VII - Still More Fighting.
Bombing Mission (FF7), The Castle (FF8), Melancholia (FF15), and Valse di Fantastica (FF15) made it to the quarterfinals.

Random.org saw fit to pair two of the above-mentioned tracks against each other in the first match of this year's game.
Random.org also guaranteed that, like in 2016, one previous champion will be eliminated in the first round.

Some personal commentary I dropped there that I might as well port over:

I have been a fan of the franchise since Final Fantasy IV, and while I have only played 1-10, I have kept up with the soundtracks ever since.
My favorite one to play as a kid was Final Fantasy VI.
My favorite one to play as an adult is Final Fantasy X pending a complete cliff dive (I haven't completed my rerun yet.)
But my favorite one to listen to is unequivocally Final Fantasy XII.

And no matter how firmly rooted my biases may be at this point, I am committed to relistening to each track. :)

Decisive Battle (FF10, 56) ~~Sometimes random.org is a monster and this is definitely the case for me here. Ugh...

The Fierce Battle (FF6, 36) ~~This was the biggest personal surprise for me, I guess. I went in expecting to vote FF5, walked away feeling pretty strongly about the alternative.

Off-topic: The second volume (https://ffnewworld.bandcamp.com/album/a-new-world-intimate-music-from-final-fantasy-volume-2) of A New World: Intimate Music from Final Fantasy came out today. Among the offerings, a really nice version of Final Fantasy IX's Awakened Forest (here called "Danger in the Forest") and interesting interpretations of two tracks from XIII and XIV, respectively. Overall, it's a pleasant collection with a few lesser-known songs to spice things up. If you haven't heard the first volume (https://ffnewworld.bandcamp.com/album/a-new-world-intimate-music-from-final-fantasy), though, I'd start there. It is well worth your time.

This one feels kind of loaded. I think a lot of the best of the never historically successful are squaring off here, and very few of these were particularly easy calls. Maybe I'm a Lion vs Royal City of Rabanastre is an especially nasty pairing.

Despite its underwhelming title, the song appears in a very significant boss battle, and it really sold the scene for me on my replay. I feel like these more ambient tracks don't tend to fair well here, but worst case it lives in eternal qualification land.

The downside of course is that every new entry bumps another track down into the second tier of qualifiers, but eh let's spice things up.

On that note, you are all always free to offer new suggestions too. About the only thing I'd veto is a remix of a more classic/already included tune (FF12's resurrection of Clash on the Big Bridge, for instance). If you suggest like 10 new entries I'll try to weed it down a bit, but a couple of new ones every year is fine by me.

That's a really good observation to make. In general ff12 tracks suffer from that too. I was just thinking to myself how hard it's going to be to vote for ff12 in these match ups hah.

This year took a rather unprecedented cliff dive, with 10 people participating in the first bracket and only 4 voting in the final two. I think multiple forum outages have a lot to do with that, along with finals for the somewhat younger crew where I also posted this.

I'm going to leave this open for a bit longer than usual. Maybe a week or so. I haven't forgotten about it though!

Round 1 is complete! 9 out of the remaining 64 contenders are advancing for their first time, and 4 of them are new to the game entirely. The new entries fared pretty well, with 4/7 advancing!

In what turned out to be a break from the recent norm, I would describe this year's round 1 outcome as very classic. Only 4 of the top 15 all time tracks have been eliminated, compared to more than half in the two previous years. We did lose one past winner, but that was inevitable. Freya's Theme collected a measly one vote against Vamo Alla Flamenco in group H. (This year saw a bizarre decline in voters, with 10 participants in group A down to only 5 in group H, but so be it!)

Upsets? There weren't many. Again, this year was classic. The ones that did happen were pretty huge though. Perhaps most strikingly, 112th-ranked Battle 2 (FF3) knocked out 9th-ranked To Zanarkand 4-3. We also saw 21st Phantom Train lose to 151st Will to Fight 4-3 in the largest rank spread. That's really about it for significant upsets. 138th Kuja's Theme knocking out 38th Home Sweet Home would be the third largest spread that I noticed. Of course, 71st-ranked Valse di Fantastica also knocked out 3rd all-time Dark Messenger 6-4. Upset, or untested? Perhaps it's too soon to tell on that entry. Either way, both the winner and the runner-up of 2018 have been eliminated in the first round!

As always, the top 12 eliminated tracks are exempt from qualifications and guaranteed entry next year, so don't sweat it if you're a fan of Dark Messenger, Freya's Theme, To Zanarkand, The Dreadful Fight (FF4), Devil's Lab, Find Your Way, Phantom Train, Red Wings, Prelude (FF4), Home Sweet Home, Theme of the Tantalus, or Wild West. (At 46th place, I think that is the deepest I have ever had to dig to find 12 eliminated songs.)

We did have fewer shutouts than usual, with only The Extreme and The Castle accomplishing that feat, both 8-0 against Ship (FF1) and Reel Rumble respectively.

As has become the norm lately, FF1 was the biggest loser and the only game eliminated in the first round. It has been knocked out at this stage three times now, more than any other game. A lot of other titles had a rough run. FF2 and FF3 have one and two representatives left respectively. That's to be expected, but more surprisingly, FF12 and FF13 are already down to only two remaining tracks each! Also, in an odd twist, despite being the 4th most popular soundtrack of the round, FF11 only saw three tracks advance. Those tie-breakers can be brutal.

All-Time Round 1 Performance Stats

FF7 has regained its position over FF4 for the all-time most popular first-round soundtrack. The game outcomes for this year were pretty bizarre on the whole though. FF6 winning shouldn't come as a shock, but this is actually the first year it ever accomplished that feat! Meanwhile, some old school voting chucked FF2 and FF3 up into their highest finishes by far, tying for 5th place. This, in turn, bumped almost everyone else down. FF4 had it's worst showing to date with a 9th place finish. FF12 similarly whiffed it with an all-time low performance of 11th. FF5 followed suit, dropping to 12th for the first time. The eternally abysmal FF14 tanked one further, finishing 13th for the first time.

My Final Fantasy XI experience is going slow, and I'm not sure how much of the game I'll really explore before I let my subscription run out, but my quest line just took me Chateau d'Oraguille for the first time. :o

I'd always assumed it was a city before!

when i played ffxi, i never got past Jeuno - mainly because I went around with friends help unlocking all the classes. I think i played for like 1 and a half years and didn't get past level 40. Can't recall the reason I did that, but it was a truly slow game back in the day. Mostly it was finding parties since you couldn't grind out content solo. After level 10 all the mobs would easily 2 shot you. That was my game every day for 1 and a half years, going to maps and shouting for parties haha. Mostly getting cash was difficult. I didn't do crafting much. Still remember hunting for armor in like caves and places. I did get armour and weapons from friends though. Truly unique mmo to me

Wow.

I just started my quest to head to Jeuno for the first time a few minutes ago. I'm level 31, and it felt like getting this far took a pretty long time (I'll still be lucky if I reach the city itself before I log for the night). I would call it a leveling timetable comparable to classic vanilla WoW. But that's in 2019 with all kinds of perks and buffs to expedite the process. I can barely imagine what a grinder this was in its day. I remember everyone talking about it that way, but they weren't exaggerating.

The draw for me that made WoW win out over FFXI when both were current was the pvp component, at least initially. I found it more visually enticing too, so that helped. What's standing out to me most as FFXI's claim to uniqueness is the absolute necessity of a team to accomplish just about anything. Sure, you have npc parties now, but I'm trying to imagine the days when real people had to fill those slots, and it strikes me as a highly social experience.

But then I remember that it was a PS2 title, which would have drastically limited communication. Weird dynamic.

Last Dungeon (FF6, 39) ~~This panned out to be a really difficult decision. I listened to both of them on repeat for a while.
Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 92) ~~And this was about the easiest choice I made all game.

Last Dungeon (FF6, 39) - easy, I'm not the biggest fan of XIII's ost.
Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 92) - Song of Memories was the song that made me pause the game just to listen to the music in the background for hours on end, but it just doesn't compare.
Kuja's Theme (FF9, 11) - lol the Spy sounds like some 70's porno music
Main Theme (FF4, 70) - this was a super hard choice, I even consulted my spouse for this one.
Succession of Witches (FF8, 34) - I like most of VIII's ost
Dancing Mad (FF6, 114) - Aurons theme just doesn't fit him.
The Final Battle (FF4, 30) - I'm also not the biggest fan of X's ost
The Castle (FF8, 91) - another favorite from VIII for me.

I'm sad to see so many votes against will to fight - love the saga influence on this song! Though i think last dungeon is like the most iconic ff song. can't think of any other song i'd rather listen to for end game, and definitely for ff6. My reason goes for last dungeon but my heart goes to will to fight I can see that last dungeon is a huge influence of many story segments in ff. Can't recall exactly which songs, but I think it has hugely influenced the ffxiv soundtrack, especially heavensward. Of course, i can tell last dungeon is influenced by previous titles too - thinking of the end dungeon them for ff4.

Really excited to run the numbers here as soon as my kids are asleep. This is the most voters we've had in round 2, with 9 in 2a and 10 in the rest. Normally people drift away, but this year it ramped up. I'm not even sure who won some of these anymore, and that makes updating it a lot more fun.

Round 2 is complete!

The post-Uematsu era flops again! Final Fantasy's 12, 13, and 14 have been eliminated. On the flip side, this is the first time that Final Fantasy's 2 and 3 have advanced to the round of 32 in the same year since our inaugural run. One first-timer is still alive in Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinose (FF8). This time last year, only two previous champs remained in the field. This go around, all but Freya's Theme are still standing. Moreover, Dancing Mad (FF6) is off to its most successful start ever, with a 16-1 blitz. It's not the point leader though. That title goes to The Fierce Battle (FF6). It has the highest point total going into round 3 in the history of this game, with a whopping 19-1 record.

There weren't many upsets by rank, though the decisiveness of Sight of Spira's 8-2 victory over The Extreme certainly felt like one. In fact, don't quote me on this, but this might be the strongest field we've had remaining at this stage. The biggest "upset" by the numbers was Save Them! (FF6, 115th) beating J-E-N-O-V-A (FF7, 24th) 5-4, which feels like a pretty fair fight in practice. The second largest rank gap was Maybe I'm a Lion (FF8, 128th) beating Melancholia (FF15, 61st) 6-4. Did I mention we have a strong field this year?

Shut outs? You bet we had shut outs, and with an unprecedented number of people voting to boot. Dancing Mad (FF6) and The Fierce Battle (FF6) knocked out Auron's Theme (FF10) and Unsettling Aura (FF15) respectively 10-0. Birth of the God (FF7) came close, with a 9-1 win over The Skycity of Bhujerba (FF12). The FF6 love is going strong this year, with 8 tracks still in the mix.

I guess the last thing to note is that this is the most active voters we've ever had to close out round 2. This game tends to start strong and lose people as it goes. 2019 flipped that on its head, and we currently have 10 people laying down votes, up from an uncomfortable 5 in 1H.

Ronfaure is decidedly overcome in this match up in my opinion.

I'd say the main reason is because of the memories the FFX song invokes. Rin's shop is an ongoing doodad in your travels through spira. As such, it's hard to forget. It could be said that it reminds you you're on a journey. I find it intriguing the track says Spira scenery. That is a good round up to what i'm trying to say. The tale of Tidus through Spira.

off-topic: didn't notice this, but "rebellion" from ff12, sounds a whole lot like something out of star wars. Which is aptly named, for that reason hah. I know that there's star wars overtones in the game so i'm not surprised.

I dont know if it's a sign of somehting but the more i listen to ff12 soundtrack the more i like it :)

Round 3 is complete!

This round saw a lot of shake-ups. FF6 got knocked down a peg with three major losses. Underdog Battle 2 (FF3, 112th) knocked out this year's current point leader and 47th-ranked The Fierce Battle 6-5. 141st-ranked Ahead on Our Way (FF5) inexplicably destroyed 53rd-ranked Last Dungeon 9-1. And 1st-ranked Still More Fighting set the record straight definitively with a 6-4 win over 2nd-ranked Dancing Mad. In an unrelated upset, Airship (FF11, 33rd) breezed past Bombing Mission (FF7, 5th) 6-4.

Battle 2's victory makes it the first FF3 track to ever reach the round of 16, and for the second time we have two FF11 tracks still at large. Final Fantasy II was the only game eliminated in the round of 32. Final Fantasy VI is still the most dominant title by a significant margin, with 5 tracks in the running, but it's lost some powerful contenders. Two out of five previous champions are still at large: Still More Fighting and Vamo Alla Flamenco.

I feel the same way. Fall 1994, I rented Final Fantasy IV from my local mom-and-pop shop, loved it, asked for it for Christmas, and got Final Fantasy VI instead. The disappointment lasted 20 seconds. When I heard the organ crash down, and the logo appeared (on fire!), I had chills. By the time the approach to Narshe started, I was completely hooked. Every time I listen to the opening theme, it takes me back to that moment.

As always, the round of 16 was the bane of less popular games. Final Fantasy 5, 10, 11, and 15 have all been eliminated. In the meantime, Final Fantasy 6 still has three tracks alive in the quarterfinals, and Final Fantasy 3 has reached this level for the first time.

The obvious story of 2019 is Battle 2's rise from 112th place to knock out the 9th ranked track in round 1, the highest point total track of 2019 in round 3, and the highest ranked track all time in round 4, all while being the only NES-era song to ever survive this deep into the tournament. Easy to forget that it's actually not the lowest ranked surviving tune. That would be Save Them, which came into this year at only 115th. (To be fair, Save Them was as high as 67th before a run of bad years. Battle 2's best was 100 even.)

Close calls! This round was full of them. In fact, Opening Theme, Birth of the God, and Save Them are the only three winners out of eight that were not decided by a single vote. (And Save Them only won by a single vote plus the tie break.)

Vamo Alla Flamenco is the only past champion still in the mix, but only three survivors are unfamiliar to the quarterfinals. Past appearances in the final rounds:

Wow, after a game that has had so many close calls I've been hard pressed to knock out updates in an evening because I can't predict any winners in advance, we just saw four tracks roll over and die to clear favorites in the quarterfinals. Every match-up ended 7-2 with the exception of Opening Theme. It managed to knock out The Decisive Battle in a 9-0 shutout. Battle 2 from FF3 remains in the hunt as the only remaining track to never reach the quarterfinals before, and we've got four different games represented in the final four. Good stuff.

Final Fantasy 2019 Final

Opening Theme (FF6) entered this game as one of the strongest contenders, ranked 12th all-time with a somewhat deceptive record. Three early eliminations to big competitors (Dark Messenger, Valley of the Fallen Star, and a 4-4 tie with Home Sweet Home) negated major point gain from runs deep into the final stages of 2014 and 2016. This year, Opening Theme faced the statistically toughest field of any finalist by a significant margin, with an average opponent rank of only 18.2. (To put this in context, the second toughest run was Ronfaure in 2016, and it faced a 37.5 average.) This number was partially inflated by that fact that its first opponent, The Prelude of Empty Skies, was unranked. A victim of the Round 1H hump, that fight ended with a meager but decisive 4-1 count. From that point forward, Opening Theme faced nothing but big time sluggers the whole way through. 15th-ranked former finalist One-Winged Angel fell 6-4 in the second. 22nd-ranked Aerith's Theme fell 6-3 after that, and things kept getting easier. 33rd-ranked Airship went down 9-1. 11th-ranked Decisive Battle ate an embarrassing 9-0 loss in the quarter finals. The only track to really bring some heat was 10th-ranked Liberi Fatali in the semis, but it fell short 6-4.

Main Theme (FF4), on the other hand, faced the statistically easiest field of any finalist, averaging 70.3. The previous easiest run had been One-Winged Angel in 2017, with a 69.8 average. This number was heavily skewed by an opening matchup with the weakest contender in the field: 172nd-ranked Stand Your Ground. That 4-2 win was followed by a number of relatively close calls against stronger tracks: 6-4 over 76th-ranked Kefka, 6-5 over 8th-ranked The Castle, 6-4 over 32-ranked Chateau d'Oraguille. Main Theme never really broke out as a strong contender until the quarterfinals, battering 22nd-ranked Birth of the God 7-2. A 6-4 win over 112-ranked underdog Battle 2 in the semis advanced it to its second finals appearance. The only track to ever reach this stage twice, Main Theme lost to Bombing Mission in a close 4-3 ending to the 2015 game. It came into this year ranked 17th.

In our sixth run of the tournament, Opening Theme knocks out Main Theme 7-4 to become the 2019 champion.

Opening Theme was also this year's point leader with 47, moving it from 12th place to 3rd. With 1065 total votes cast, this year uniquely saw participation increase the deeper we got rather than trail off.

Main Theme stood alone as the second highest point earner this year with 39, and that saw it advance from 17th back into its long-held top 10 slot with an 8th place position.

There was no movement at the top, and there isn't likely to be for quite some time, with Still More Fighting defeating Dancing Mad one on one to further cushion its lead up to a 35 point advantage.

And with another Final Fantasy VI track taking the crown, we have now seen only three out of fifteen games win in a span of six years!
