It's now time for one of my favorite parts of the annual game: the qualification stage for next year. It's an opportunity to hear some lesser known but still impressive tracks from the series, and it's a chance to decide who will and will not be surfacing for the competition this time a year from now.

FFShriners get unique say in the qualifications; I don't share them with my off-site voters. Everyone is welcome to vote, but if it seems like a lot at once don't feel obligated to participate. I see this as a more casual thing, and (most of it) remains open year round. For whatever it's worth, I like to consider a whole range of reasons--to bring back my favorite tracks, certainly, but also to give less common fair an occasional shot in the main game, to ensure comprehensive representation (FF1 must qualify a track in order to appear in 2020), in general just to keep it interesting from my perspective. You can vote for as many or as few entries as you wish. You can wait until next year and see how you feel about them at more of a distance. Just have fun with it:

The qualification round will remain open until April 2020.

Tracks which did not appear in 2019 will always win a tie.

If you wish to change a vote, please do so in a new post. I will be updating my list as votes are cast, so an edit will likely be missed.

2019 losers will always be listed first and paired with tracked that did not appear this year. As with the round of 128, no two tracks will ever face each other twice in the main qualification round.

Pre-Quals: In order to expand the game further, I added a second tier of qualifications last year. This will allow the game to continue to grow without having to permanently remove any entries. Losers of last year's pre-quals and new entries will square off new entries against the historically lowest performing tracks. Winning these matches only guarantees appearance in the subsequent main qualification round. Voting for this stage opens now and will remain open until the 2019 game ends, at which point I'll post the main round, which is 52 matches all at once. If you would like to propose further new entries, do so now, with sufficient time for them to be voted on before the main game ends. Note that the cap for a single game is currently 16, meaning I won't accept additional FF8 tracks and FF4, 6, and 7 are capped at one additional entry.

New this year: Tracks that joined us in the third run of this game have had their chance and are now susceptible to pre-quals.

Now that I'm playing the game, I should probably correct the inaccurate track title I've been using for half a decade. It's Windurst.

Pre-Qualifications round:
Primarch Dysley (FF13, never qualified)
In the Sky That Night (FF13, 1) <-- i'm a sucker for masashi's tunes - reminds me lots of saga songs, and i love the light-hearted tunes he makes.
Rolanberry Fields (FF11, never qualified)
Rebellion (FF12, 3)
The Federation of Windurst (FF11, never qualified) <-- bittersweet

There's some bittersweet choices there.

Think I'm going to change my vote to Windurst actually. Having now explored all four major cities of the original launch, it was my favorite location by far, and I think the music really brought it to further life more convincingly than the others.

yeah boi, fishing at windursstttt. windurst was where my merchant were at too.

Just adding, cause I need to give the XIV player base some encouragement here.

The last expansion Stormblood undoubtedly had some very good music. I find myself coming back to the soundtrack quite often for it's general sense of continuance, much in the same way I can listen to other final fantasy tracks. I won't say which ones are my favourites at the moment, but hoping that sometime in the future there would be more tracks to this game. The latest expansion comes out tonight and sure there'll be some far more varied tunes to that expansion as well.

Cool, I'll pair these up hopefully tomorrow. We should maybe think about whether we want to include just Aria di Mezzo Carattere or the whole opera sequence as one piece similar to Dancing Mad.

Also I'm probably going to add Sanctuary of Zi'Tah from FF11 because I just got there and it's great.

My reasoning for keeping them separate is that the opera sections are separate tracks in the OST tracklist, while Dancing Mad is one continuous track.

btw What do you guys think about adding Final Fantasy Tactics songs to the rumble?

I'm a big fan of the tactics soundtrack(s). I say soundtracks because it's clear that the original inspires a lot of the tracks in the subsequent games. It's been a while since i listened to the whole soundtrack however... Have done it on multiple occasions because of the european style to them... e.g orchestral, with sweeping melodies. For the actual soundtrack.. I think there are some very notable themes. Thank FFXIV for bringing them back into my consciousness. Ramza's theme, the preparation for the battle music, and the end game themes are all wonderful tracks. All that to say, I think it deserves a few tracks in there. The other obvious question would be, is this a main series title?

Regarding Final Fantasy Tactics, I love Hitoshi Sakimoto (see: my Final Fantasy XII voting record), and FFT is arguably regarded as more canon main title Final Fantasy than XI or XIV. Originally there just wasn't room for it, and its lack of a number meant it was the first to go. With this expanded format, it's certainly more easy to accommodate. I guess my biggest concern is that expanding the game so rapidly could prevent tracks on the cusp from ever really breaking through. New additions will get a lot of voting priority for being new, and I'm worried that we'll see a lot of potential underdog runners vanish for a few years. Like, on the low end of pre-quals we're taking out songs that haven't managed to break the first round in four years. If we start forcing say, The Phon Coast or Gurgu Volcano into that position...

The catch with adding FFT is that it's going to come in bulk. We'd be looking at a minimum 8 new tracks, I think. We have a couple options with that. The game currently has 193 tracks. FFT would be too few to go to a full 256 hoedown, and I don't know that interest exists in doing anything that big anyway. (I thoroughly enjoy this, but it's hard for me to measure the point where you all would just get bored with it.)

Pre-quals is now a 13-track gig, up from 4 when I started running it. FFT would make it somewhere around 23. The current system allows for a maximum 26, and my new entry pass breaks that number. We would need a new system here. I can think of a few options.

One idea I really like is to scrap the current method whereby the top 12 ranked losers get into the final 128 and introduce a single-vote pass. The whole point of the 12-track auto-advance was to prevent clear favorites from dropping off the map, but tastes change over time, and the longer this game runs, the less the numbers reflect that. If I let every active participant of the current year choose one round-one loser to reappear the following year, I think that could make everyone happy while freeing up space in the qualifiers. It wouldn't free up much space, but more importantly it would make a large pre-qual field feel less destructive. You're always going to get one in.

A more straight-forward option would be to not give new entries a pass. You're subject to pre-quals every year out the gate. That would certainly free us up until a Final Fantasy XVI is injected into the mix.

I'm open to other suggestions. I would also note that I keep reasonably tight control over how many people participate here. I feel like 8-12 voters is the sweet spot where everyone's voice matters but it still feels competitive, and I advertise each year to the extent that it yields something about in that zone. I'm not worried about growth and I'm more interested in ensuring that the people who have an established interest in it get the return they're looking for. Whatever works best for all of you is necessarily the best option.

---------- Post added at 01:08 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:58 AM ----------

I think I'm at something like this:

Starting next year, round 1 losers get no guaranteed pass. Instead, everyone who has participated in the current game and at least one previous year can select a round-one loser to automatically advance to the next year's 128, up to 12 people. (At present, this cap is a non-issue.) So basically if we were to implement this right now, Voter 1 can replace Wild West with a round 1 loser of their choising, Voter 2 can replace Theme of the Tantalus, Voter 3 can replace Home Sweet Home, etc up to Dark Messenger. (We wouldn't realistically get that high.)

New tracks that don't make it through qualifiers don't get a pre-qual pass.

We can add FFT and be in a system that works for a while.

arthurgolden
07-08-2019, 07:56 AM
That seems like a fair system to me.

Shad
07-08-2019, 11:16 AM
It's also possible that I can't math at 1 in the morning. Pre-quals can handle 52, not 26. I might not need to change anything at all just yet.

feralanima
07-09-2019, 12:14 PM
My vote is still with Crystarium after listening to the updated track.

I like the idea of voting in a song instead of prequals, in order to bring in some FFT. I also like the idea of keeping it limited to max number of people, to help keep underdogs from falling to the way side.

For next year's qualifiers, we'll be introducing Final Fantasy Tactics. If you have a track you're dying to recommend and you're worried about forgetting between now and then, feel fry to name it here and I'll jot down a note. Depending on how many recommendations come in, we might have to pick and choose or we might be able to roll with everything. That's something to sort next year.

Posting as I go

Group A
Fighting Fate (FF13, 29) ~~No contest.
The Forgotten Capital (FF12, 14) ~~I could go either way here. Ultimately sided with FF12 hype plus it missed out the last two years.
The Federation of Windurst (FF11, new entry). ~~Oof. I really love Starlight Celebration, but my recent foray into FF11 has me dead set on seeing Windurst through.
Esper Battle (FF12, 28) ~~No contest.
You're Not Alone! (FF9, new entry) ~~This track is why letting people add new songs matters. Amazing it was overlooked this long.
Saber's Edge (FF13, 29) ~~Steiner is my breakout new favorite FF9 character on replay, but his tune is still middling. Saber's Edge is beautiful.
Eruyt Village (FF12, 31) ~~FF11 has a lot of great tunes that really define the game experience, and Despair is not one of them. Especially up against one of my favorite FF12 tracks.

Group B
Ishgard Pillars (Day) (FF14, 6) ~~This track has had really tough luck getting paired against other strong underdogs. I might prefer Troops March On for nostalgia, but FF6 is over-represented and I'd love to give it a shot.
Heaven's Tower (FF11, 10) ~~Another case where I love both tunes and want to give the underdog a shot.
The Royal City of Rabanastre (FF12, 31) ~~Two imaginative tracks. I think Royal City is way more compelling though.
Eternal Harvest (FF9, 5) ~~I listened to both of these for a while. I don't feel strongly about either, but it was a close call between them.
Otherworld (FF10, 14) ~~This song has had brutal rands over the years and my voting record doesn't really reflect how much I enjoy it. The tune is fun independently, but its role in the game is the real selling point.
Magna Insomnia (FF15, 24) ~~No contest.
Forbidden Land Eureka (FF3, new entry) ~~Gustaberg is an interesting track. Neither the in-game region nor the tune itself do much for me independently, but I think they really compliment each other well. It's not enough to top Eureka though.

Group C
To the Place of Gods (FF12, 22) ~~Royal Palace kicks off stronger, but To the Place of Gods holds up better over a few minutes of repetition.
Battle (FF3, 10) ~~This is one of my favorite NES battle tunes. The gritty, sleazy groove that permeates FF8 tracks like Under Her Control is something I can get into, but it's not strong enough to carry here.
Eden Under Siege (FF13, 11) ~~No contest.
Off the Edge of Dispair (FF7, 28) ~~Crystal Cave is one of the weakest FF3 tracks in the mix, it think. I would have humored voting an underdog here generically, but I can't do it in this case.
In Search of Light (FF5, 2) ~~Competitive match-up, but not a tough call. I'd rather give In Search of Light a second shot.
Anxiety (FF11, 38) ~~This song is sooooooooo good, and it took me years to realize that.
Selbina (FF11, 20) ~~I never imagined Selbina to be a desert port city, but encountering it in the game made me appreciate it a lot more.

Group D
Out of the Labyrinth (FF14, 6) ~~Saltswept always shows up and goes nowhere. Let's see what this tune can do. It's more interesting, I think. Just less immediately accessible.
Mystic Mysidia (FF4, 7) ~~This track hasn't appeared since qualifiers came into existence after 2015, and that's a real shame. FF3 has plenty of other good battle tunes in the running.
Seymour Battle (FF10, 34) ~~I have an abysmal voting record with this track and I have no idea why. It's great. Loving FFX on replay probably helped.
The Crystarium (FF14, new entry) ~~Neither of these tracks do much for me, so let's let the new guy through.
Eternal Wind (FF3, 22) ~~No contest. Also, Eternal Wind is one of only two tracks left out of the original 128 that I have never voted against.
The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah (FF11, new entry) ~~I love The Lunarians, especially in its in-game setting, but I feel like it's expendable to see a new entry through.
The Phon Coast (FF12, 36) ~~No contest.

Group E
Gurgu Volcano (FF1, 29) ~~This is my favorite FF1 track, and I think one of the few NES-era tunes that I liberally vote for without any component of wanting to see through an underdog.
Signs of Change (FF12, 20) ~~Eyes On Me is awful. Sorry.
Ashe's Theme (FF12, 6) ~~Yikes, now this is a tough one. I think Ashe's Theme just does a little bit more, and it missed out last year.
Aetherial Slumber (FF14, 16) ~~There's probably a Youtube documentary to be made on the peculiar story behind Square-Enix blacklisting this track from Youtube when every other song from the FF franchise is free game. For now, it just suits my mood better.
Balamb Garden (FF8, 23) ~~Eh, the only Final Fantasy track with vocals that does anything for me is Suteki Da Ne. Balamb Gardan is okay.
Theme of the Empire (FF12, 11) ~~I love this theme. If I could go back in time, I'd swap it out for the Agitation (Imperial Version) take on it, but it's still a fairly easy decision for me.

Group F
Blue Fields (FF8, 43) ~~Damn, this is an unfortunate pairing. I love both of these, but Blue Fields wins by a hair aside from the fact that it had to sit out 2019.
Matoya's Cavern (FF1, 23) ~~I hand-picked Cid's Theme to be a new entry in 2016, but it hasn't done much for me since. Matoya's Cavern is a classic.
Besaid Island (FF10, 46) ~~I can't believe this tune missed out on 2019. No contest.
Desperate Struggle (FF13, 1) ~~Yikes.
Between Ordeals (FF10, 2) ~~Force Your Way is the definition of generic, to me. Between Ordeals is a little to quirky to carry far, but at least it's creative.
Suteki da ne (FF10, 4) ~~Not a popular opinion, but I think this tune is really pretty.

Group G
Story Mission Theme (FF14, new entry) ~~Nothing wins me over easier than a nice waltz, but Troian Beauty has made the cut every single year and has very little to show for it. Let's give a new tune a chance.
Steel Reason (FF14, 5) ~~Tozas Town does nothing for me. Steel Reason is a really fun and grossly underappreciated song.
The Hand That Gives the Rose (FF14, 7) ~~Meh. Every year it's the same story. The Hand That Gives the Rose wows me on first encounter and then I quickly realize they copped out and made it a 30 second loop in an era of vgm where they could have easily turned it into something epic. I want to vote against it here. Main Theme from FF1 is just... really dull.
Main Theme (FF2, 12) ~~Now here's a pairing where I can give one of the early titles some love without any regrets.
Born Anew (FF13, 6) ~~Brutal. I think Kugane is one of the best new additions, and against nearly any other track I would give it the advantage here. Born Anew is just too strong.
Ship (FF1, 3) ~~Castle Pandemonium never lives up to its name. Ship's a fun tune with potential to advance through a round or two.

Group H
Gold Saucer (FF7, 21) ~~GO GOLD SAUCER GO!! 2020 CHAMPION!!!!
Harvest (FF5, 8) ~~Not a huge fan of either of these.
Attack (Raid) (FF10, 15) ~~This tune is great and it missed the last two years.
Vana'diel March (FF11, new entry) ~~Here's another great opportunity to see a new entry through. Tower of Bab-il is great, but I can live without it for a year. Vana'diel March feels so quintessential FF11.
Cursed Earth (FF5, 20) ~~Some years I really like Those for the Purge, and some years it does nothing for me. A really moody piece. Hedging on "does nothing" at the moment.
Sometime, Somewhere (FF11, 11) ~~Speaking of which, The Day Will Come is a snooze-fest.

This only solidifies the fact that I love FF 5, 8, 9, and 11's ost. I'm not a big fan of FF 10 or 13 ost. Finally, Golden Saucer can go die in a manure fire, with the manure it might actually be worth something.

I always try to pick Breezy and Blue Fields for Arthur, as long as they're not up against one I have strong feelings for. They are good tracks that are underappreciated.

Also, I feel like we might have another FF9 winner next year with the introduction of "You're Not Alone"...that could also be my highly personal bias speaking lol
